- Vivian Dorothy Maier (February 1, 1926 - April 21, 2009) was an American street photographer whose work was discovered and recognized after her death. She worked for about 40 years as a nanny, mostly in Chicago's North Shore, while pursuing photography. She took more than 150,000 photographs during her lifetime, primarily of the people and architecture of Chicago, New York City, and Los Angeles, although she also traveled and photographed worldwide.
During her lifetime, Maier's photographs were unknown and unpublished; many of her negatives were never developed. A Chicago collector, John Maloof, acquired some of Maier's photos in 2007, while two other Chicago-based collectors, Ron Slattery and Randy Prow, also found some of Maier's prints and negatives in her boxes and suitcases around the same time. Maier's photographs were first published on the Internet in July 2008, by Slattery, but the work received little response. In October 2009, Maloof linked his blog to a selection of Maier's photographs on the image-sharing website Flickr, and the results went viral, with thousands of people expressing interest. Maier's work subsequently attracted critical acclaim, and since then, Maier's photographs have been exhibited around the world.
Her life and work have been the subject of books and documentary films, including the film Finding Vivian Maier (2013), which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 87th Academy Awards.

Thank God Vivian's work was discovered. Outstanding.
I'm not sure what your motivations are in putting these collections together, but I want you to know how much I appreciate it! It's so great to have them curated in one place.
I’m changed by her work. Absolute genius. Just one of her pictures would be my all time favorite if I had taken it. This is a great inspirational reset for me.
Amazing. Simply breathtaking. I had never heard of Vivian Maier until an hour ago. Now I don't think I will ever forget her.
You should watch the documentary on her
I did.@@fodgepodge
As a lifelong fine artist & pure creative myself, I strongly relate to Vivian Meyer's unique POV & genius for capturing photos of strangers in downtown neighborhoods at their most candid. Her wonderfully composed self-portraits via ornate & gilded mirrors in store displays through the storefronts' windows containing the secondary reflection of her capturing the shot, are genius at depicting in a single-shot photograph her ability to summarize the richness of her inner world in the layers of that single image, without any sort of post-editing. I am so happy that she is recognized, even though posthumously, from an accidental auction purchase by John Maloof, the film's co-director who discovered her work: I learned of her about 7 years ago from the documentary 'Finding Vivian Maier.' I see her as a creative peer: able to find the living blood & pulse of life in the most seemingly banal of settings
These images feel like they're breathing they are so well done. The facial expressions are amazing. The use of light and shadow is stunning. Vivian certainly knew how to capture the decisive moment. What a fantastic journey through her time on this planet.
Fantastic quality. One of the greatest photographer in the history.
Fascinating, just fascinating. this video is almost 30 minutes but I've been watching for over an hour and just made it to the 14 min mark because I keep going back a few frames because something had caught my attention like perhaps the background, people, cars, building, the compositions and, of course, the multitude of reflections. This lady was gooood! Also kudos to the scanner. I just love the black, the whites, the tonal range in between. I'll probably spend another hour or two tomorrow to watch the second half of his video. Thanks for posting this.
👏👏👏🙏
Timeless. The work of a master. Such a pleasure to watch.
One of the greats so high above so many of us self professed 'artists'. ThankGod someone discovered them
I'm crying. What an amazing collection never seen when she was alive.
Brings me to tears, thank you for posting Ms. Maier's work!!
Thank you for keeping her vision alive and the true nature of still photography
Hadn't seen any of her 35mm work before ..... Awesome !!!! .... Thanks so much
These pictures may as well have come from another planet. The people's looks, their expressions their clothes, their activities--all show a seemingly foreign world. Or is it just the way VM chose to portray it? I've seen one reviewer judge her photography as boring, insipid. I believe it is quite the opposite. She saw her time on Earth like no other has.
Wonderful ! what a supremely talented photographer, you don't just see the images, you feel them.
She was a brilliant photographer thank you so much for putting this up I have every book in regards to her journey
Maier is, for me, one of the greats of candid street photography - & most certainly the champion of Rolleiflex cameras. The earlier monochromes are (for the most part) pin sharp - equal to anything that a modern contemporary Mirrorless camera can produce. There's soul & an all-too ephemeral feel to her work that few could replicate today. I have several of her books, & never tire of studying their composition, exposure latitudes, or the mood that she created with each photograph. Thank you for this reprisal !
Lisbon, Portugal. Amazing works of a bygone era and people lives. BRAVO and thanks, VIVIAN.
All I can say is what incredible, thought provoking images and how sad she was only recognised for her photography after her death.
Thankfully someone recognised her talents and her photos, negatives and prints etc were saved. So we can now appreciate and be inspired by them.👍
Spectacular and amazing! Thank you so much for compiling the work of these photographs in videos. I love the format and the pace to discover them! ❤
She 's my idol.the best of street photographer.❤❤❤
I love your collection of such great photographs. I've been searching for inspirations and vision for street photography from a very long time. Finally found here. No chit chat, no dumping of technical things. Just watch and observe. I love it.
I really enjoy this video. Maier is one of my all time favorite street photographers.
I don't know much about photography, but I know masterful, beautiful images when I see them. She has quite the eye, and a knack for being in the right place at the exact right time, or else just knows what moments to look for. It's always sad seeing old photos, because you know most of the people and certainly all of the animals are now dead.
Agreed
I just love her photography! She took a picture of everybody everywhere she went and cleverly did selfies before they were called that! I wish she had been interviewed so we can here her stories! Just fascinating!
Her photos have made such an impact on me. Rest in peace Vivian. You live on, through your work. ❤
Outstanding photographer!
I love how she uses light and dark and reflections to create such a brilliant compositions this is all inspiring
Bellissime fotografie,un documento importante, impresso su negativo, immagini diverse dalle odierne digitali evanescenti ,polvere di bit, morte🖖❤️
These are all parts of our history that need not only to be preserved but shared. Thank you for doing so.
Vivian Maier's story is an interesting one. Thank you for this!
Thinkers, drinkers, stinkers and little tinkers, Vivian photographed them all. Every shot had a story. Thanks for putting this video together. I love her work.
I've heard of this woman and her idiosyncrasies, but I had no idea. What an astonishing body of work.
Master of the craft - and nothing ‘automatic in this 6 x 6 rig, except her well-trained eye. Thank you for sharing. I especially enjoyed the portraits 😊, and have subscribed.
Life is wonderful and terrible at the same time.
Oh! She knew it well…
Thank you for the vid. I love it
Thank you. Exceptional. Vivian is up there with the true greats. To think she took most of her photos without viewing the results, and learning from that, is a unique and extraordinary story.
An incredible amount of street photographs - and new ones for me! I bought every available book with her pictures - so I know a lot of them. Here I was just: yes - yes - no - probably not - yes - probably yes... and so on. VM left us such a treasure! Always at the right spot, always pressing the button in the perfect split second! Thanks from Munich. :-)
Fantastic body of work, sympathetic presentation
Incredible pictures/photographer. All with a standard lens!
Es ist eine wunderbare Begabung, das Leben in dieser Form darstellen zu können❗️❗️❤️🔥🙏
Great selection of the images. Very good ambient music, too.
I learned a lot from this video ... I learned that Vivian photographed everything in her field of view, she photographed herself a lot (self portraits), she photographed all over the USA and into Canada and at some point she switched from her TLR to a RF 35mm ... the TLR was a ROLLIFLEX and the RF 35mm looked to be an early NIKON (I could stand to be corrected) .. and most of all I learned that this awesome lady was really well versed in photography and possessed an awesome artistic eye ....yes, I learned all that from this video, and did I mention that she had a special way of communicating ... Love and respect to Vivian ...
Amazing compositions and snapshots! Thanks for sharing those beautiful visions!
Vivian Maier, so great thank you for this video!!😍😍
Thank you! What a joy to see.
Some pictures are sad, melancholic, because there is what is on them.
But most of them are sad for me because that time is gone. One would like to be a part of those fragments of stories. Unfortunately, nothing can be returned. We live our amazingly sad time of cell phones and alienation. She deserved be in Magnum Photos agency.
21.49 in "what an absolute remarkable image the reflection of the woman in the window and the car in between the pillars which is not in view within the shot "Amazing.
Thankyou, this is wonderful.
WOW...Unbelievable talent...!!!
Brilliant.
She gives the impoverished and the ordinary such dignity and gravitas . She sees beauty in things most pass without a thought. And she would have been one hell of a portraitist! I wonder what she was thinking as she took some of these. . . .
Brilliant, so many points of departure!
On top of her great compositions as well as the capture of lights and shadows, we should not forget that she had great lenses with her Yashica (I believe) as performant as the top lenses we use today (so far). Great selection here.
her work is simply a masterpiece
Impressionnant de maîtrise, Une très grande artiste.
Thank you! This was a treat! There were some photos I had never seen. 😊
Absolute Outstanding
I work, here in Brazil, with my students in Journalism College this amazing photographer, Vivian Maier.
Her adaptable style is splendid.
Music is well chosen too.!!!👌🏻
She shared Her eyes with all of US.
I forgot to breath. Stunning
wow .....아름다운 사진들입니다...
Es una patada en el estomago, un beso en el corazón, una lagrima y un suspiro.
Amazing!
The poor lady did not see most of her photos after she took them.
Fantastic, really enjoyed this, the square B/W are an amazing selection, the 35mm though were just not for me
❤❤❤ my favourite photographer❤❤❤
Gracias 👍
Estas fotografias nos fazem pensar. Em cada retrato, uma interrogação, aí está a genialidade desta fotografa que não conhecia.

Чудо❤😢История...Великая..
Just Amazing :)
❤ thanks
I understand!!!!!!!!!!! :) We would have crossed paths plenty....and still do.
a moment in time
Harika fotoğraflar
Simplesmente espetacular
love it!
Wundervoll ❤️
U know what's crazy is that no one ever claim to know the ppl she photographed, like tow homeless ppl on the street or the child with the adult, or the women in fur coats.... I find it odd and I know each one has a story to tell
Seems to have the same sort of eye as Cartier Bresson. She was an Artist.
Vivian te amo!
INSPIRING !!!!
Mindfulness.
멋진인생
why are her photos so incredibly sharp? I saw other people with a Rolleiflex copying it and she is always a tad sharper, better.
I have that camera. It was my dad's.
It seems Vivian Meier did not financially profit from these photographs in any way. However, once purchased and discovered it appears that many people have turned a profit in presenting these to the world. I have no problem with that. My question: Considering that many people's faces are shown, was the signing of a release needed? What are the legalities here?
Мне нравится ❤
They said she became poor and couldn't print her work, so this means she only did it for fun
wow.
👏👏👏👏
15.30 in "is that Al capone in the picture.
Better with sound turned off.
Better than Helmut Newton
Vivian Maier maybe not living a rich life..but surely she's beyond of it.
