Thank you so much for your kind comment. These are snapshots of my city, Porto, in Portugal, They are simple captures of our everyday life. I am glady you enjoyed the video.
Thank you for your kind comment. Porto used to be a wonderful place for street photography, now tourism has destroyed most of those places and driven natives away. I will have a look at your work more attentively, you seem to have a wonderful portfolio. Greetings from Porto, city of Port Wine
These pictures make you the Cartier-Bresson of Aveiro. Or Portugal. Or of our days? You must be so happy when you come home and review the catch of the day. With maybe one shot, that tells it all. A person far at the left of your frame, and another one at the exreme right. Both not connected, but your story in between. Parabéns! Gosto muito das vossas fotografias.
Thank you so much for your comment. I just wished it was true, HCB was the greatest photographer that ever lived, I'm not even a photographer, so there is very little in common between us, sadly! I live in Porto, Portugal, an excellent city for street photography, so I'm lucky. Cheers from Porto.
Just started 'serious' photography a couple of years ago and now I'm veering towards concentrating on street photography - my dream is to take photos like yours! Great imagination to spot the opportunities. Keep it up, very inspiring stuff!
Thank you so much for your compliment. I blushed with your praise of my pictures, but they are just photographic notes of the things I see. I do hope that you get to succeed in street photography, it's not easy, you have to persevere, but the greater the difficulty, the more rewarding it is to get a good image. All the best for your new venture.
Wonderful photographs, Paulo! Your photos take people places, on a journey. You are much more than a guy talking about cameras. Your work shows that you are actually a very talented photographer in your own right! Please keep the great videos coming.
+Leroy Dunbar Thank you for your words. These are just snapshots mostly of my city. I am just an amateur phtographer that knows a thing or two about old cameras! Again, thank you for your ecouragement, I will try to keep posting more videos.
Thank so so much for your comment. I am just a guy who likes to take pictures and also enjoys using old cameras. I am very fortunate to live in an exceptional city, with loads of character and histoy. Greetings from Porto, city of Port Wine.
I am willing to bet that 100 years from now the street photographers who will define our age will virtually all be taken by amateurs. While a very few professionals, (really commercials) manage to break out of the bad habits they develop from a life time of trying to please clients for money and develop their own vision, it is mostly amateurs, who work for no other reason than their passions who will catch the spirit and soul of their times..
Perhaps you are right, professional photographers are much more limited in their actions because they depend on the money they make by taking pictures and we don't. Unfortunately I think that in a 100 years time there will be precious little photographic documentation of our times due to the digital and virtual means. Not a lot of pictures will be found, don't see inkjet prints lasting a hundred year or DVD's or whatever, shame really, the century where more pictures were taken will be the one with less photographic records.
I am not sure how much of our times will be saved, but I do know that there are always people out there who will try and find a way to archive what they believe will be the best art, (some will include photography) of their time. Perhaps some of those those will be of street photography. Perhaps not.
Dear Mr. Moreira, Some of your photographs are simply epic. The compositions in each one of them are outstanding. Its just that you need recognition from the so called Guru's of the Photography world to bring you into limelight. Believe me you have the skill and ability of all the Greats... just nee more Marketing.
Thank you for your kind and encouraging words words Mr. Kamat. It's not false modesty, I really don't think that I am any good at street picture taking. It 's OK, really, I'm not a photographer and I don't have any hidden desire to become one or to be widely known, there are far more talented people out there who wish to make a name for themselves in the photography world. I just enjoy sharing my pics, cheers!
Thank you for your nice comment. Regarding your questions, it's very easy to reply! I don't have any technique, I don't have any settings and my digital cameras are almost as old as my film cameras! :D I'm not joking, I have a 7 year old APS-C mirrorless camera and a 5 year old compact, that's it, nothing more. I refuse to spend money on digital cameras, so mine are old, bought old, in case they die, it won't be a great financial loss. I do not have lenses for my mirrorless, I use my old film lenses with adapters and even a focal length adapter. I only use wide angles, never 35 mm, that's not wide in my book. I don't like SLRs, I don't use SLRs. I have no technique, except shooting in RAW and ISO 400. I don't like to shoot in the summer time, the light is too harsh, so I prefer to go shadow hunting in the evenings. When I shoot film, in spite of having dozens of SLRs, I never use them, I use rangefinders, Leica style like the Canons, the Russian L39 and sometimes the Contax G series. I don't like screw mount Leicas, so for me it's just the M bodies. I use the cheapest film available and always ISO 100. I love ultra wide angle lenses, I am fortunate enough to have lenses from 15mm to 50 mm for my rangefinders. I don't use a meter, even if the camera has one. I develop myself the black and white films. As for picture taking, I am quite shy and I don't like to point a big black SLR with a gigantic zoom lens at people's faces, they don't react well, neither would I. Nobody cares if you have a small innocent looking compact or an old film camera. In fact, some film cameras are ice breakers and people almost queue up to have their picture taken, the Rolleiflex is one of those cameras, but so is the Pentax 67 or a folding camera from the 50's. I don't interact with my subjects, but with old cameras I have too, because people react so well. As you see, I really don't have much to share it all depends on my mood. I hope this information will help you. Cheers!
@@paulomoreira007 Thank you so much for the time spent in your answer. Very helpful indeed! I did inherit some older film cameras from my grandfather, and I enjoy shooting with them (Yashica 124g & Electro 35). I have the 1978 original Nikon FE which is wonderful. Nowadays, I have a Pentax K50, a QS-1 and a RICOH GRii which I love for street photography. Thanks again and all the best!
Guoman liao Thank you for your nice comment. True, I guess I fo have an influence from HCB, at least I don't go around the streets with a flash scaring people!:)
James Fan Thank you for your nice comment. No, I have never published my photos in books or portfolio. I am just an amateur photographer, I don't think my photos are interesting enough to be published or exhibited. Cheers.
Paulo Moreira in this case, your modesty isnt doing you much good. you are very talented, and clearly have a repertoire of composition, the ability to capture beauty, and to create interesting stories within your photos. very good work. keep it up, and i hope you allow yourself to see that you have something special.
David Roudebush Thank you for your nice comment. The thing is, it'st not just being modest, it is exactly how I feel. There is no particular interest in my photos, I've never been invited to exhibit them or anything of the the sort. In short, I may have some talent, but it's just that, I like wandering the streets, taking pictures tnat are innocuous, they lack drama and impact, but that's how I am. In the nearuture I plan to tackle the the photo essay, but I am not ready for that yet!
well, i definitely have interest in your photos! lol. but okay i see what you are saying. i just wanted to make sure you realize you have talent and to keep at photography. its awesome you have a goal in mind i think thats important! (i have to get more organized with my efforts rather than shooting aimlessly. starting with this roll in my camera now). good luck on your photo essay. im sure it'll be awesome.
David Roudebush I don't intend to stop taking pictures. I wished I could further develop my passion, but it is a case of too little, too late. Still, being an amateur gives me an immense freedom to do as I please. Only half a dozen of the pics in the video were film stills, but it is hard to tell them apart. I only use film because of the cameras, I really miss the machine, the mechanical side of picture taking, but the mean (digital or film) is indifferent for me. Don't expect a great photo essay, I don't even have a theme and being a terribly shy guy doesn't help either! I suppose it's better to focus on a type of subject, but not always. In the end, what matters is the pleasure the one derives from picture taking.
Thank you swannmannbaggywaggy for your nice comment. Well, it is true that I switch cameras and not all the pictures here were taken digitally. It is no secret (this is not an edorsement) that I use a Sony Nex that allows me to use 99% of my lenses. It is also no secret that I love P&S cameras, many of these photos were made with a Sony RX100. As for film cameras, you have Leica M6, Voigtlander VF101, Contax T2, Yashica Electro 35, perhaps I am forgetting some! :-)
Dieter R. Thank you for your compliment! Most of the shots were made with a Sony Nex7 (but with legacy lenses) and a Sony RX100. A few were made with a Rolleiflex 3.5F, Leica M6 TTL and Contax T2.
ShootStreetTV Thank you for your words. I use a Sony Nex7 but only with manual focus lenses, no Sony lenses! I also use the little Sony RX100. In this video there a few film shots made with the Leica M6, Contax T and Rolleiflex 3.5 F. The gear is irrelevant, I could have used any camera, as long it was discreet (no zoom!). Cheers!
ShootStreetTV No, not really. I am no photographer, just a guy that enjoys walking the streets with a camera and taking a few shots here and there! Never thought about making a photo book. As for the cameras, you had access to privileged information, I normally do not mention what cameras as people attach too much importance to gear. :D
