- Honda 400EX Affordable Trail Quad Project Build Part 3. The Honda 400EX is an ideal candidate for building an affordable, reliable and run trail quad. In this series we purchase and evaluate a used 400EX. We then replace any worn or bent parts to restore its stock performance and add the necessary upgrades to the build to create a long lasting ATV for aggressive trail riding.
In this episode, we complete the installation of the PEP steering stabilizer. We then destroy and replace the stock axle carrier with a Tusk 400EX axle carrier. Lastly, we give our 400EX budget build a fresh oil change with Maxima Pro Plus oil.
In the next and final episode, we tally the price and put affordable trail quad build to the test.

I have been on quads for some time. But everyone had pretty cheap / low cc quads. I had the opportunity to ride a 400ex and loved the power. It was a blast on the trails. I cant imagine something with 10-15 more hp
There are a lot of them out there for less than we paid. Save up for an upgrade.
My dream quad as a kid. I remember flipping thru dirt wheels magazine and seeing the 400ex and how amazing the machine looked with its bug eyes, something about the look of it... Never got to own one but was able to build my own yfz450r with all the best parts on the market late last year all hand built by me from the frame to every single bolt. This video series has been pretty awesome to watch a 400ex get rebuilt. Takes a lot of time and effort but it’s all worth it in the end
We remember those days when the 400 was first hitting the market. Had a fully built Yamaha Warrior at the time. The EX sent me running for the 2-stroke class. LOL We bet that YFZ450R was worth the wait. We hope you'll check out the test. Editing it now.
@@ATVonDemand it was very much worth the wait. It’s got every part Walsh makes and a fresh set of PEP shocks built by Wayne. A graphics kit that looks killer. Thank you for making videos like this. Keep it up 👊✊👍
It would be cool to see a flat track/TT racing ATV build! Maybe the base machine could be a TRX 450R or LTR 450, and a major aftermarket brand (like Rath Racing or Walsh Racecraft) could get on board as well.
We agree that would be cool If only problem for us is we'd have to drive five hours just to test it. LOL
This build series doesnt get enough credit. Awesome work guys!
Much appreciated!
Honda please bring it back, add efi, and more built in storage for trail use. Could be the 4 wheel version of the CRF 250f.
Yes but Honda thinks you should buy side by side.
@@ATVonDemand Honda should think again.
i want a 400ex so bad! love the video
Get that money together. 🤟
Love a good ol 400ex build!
Can't wait to rip it.
Great Project
Glad you enjoyed it
👍👍👍
You installed the axle nut incorrectly
We made it through the test. He must have corrected it when I wasn't looking.
@ATVonDemand it's a easy mistake I rode for few years with mine incorrect. The jamb nut goes against axle nut not the caliper
Any chance of an interesting video?😅
What would you prefer, an unobtainable $50,000 SxS build that no one can relate to, or an affordable build that people can actually aspire to build?
Richard, you must think you're on the onlyfans channel again
