Nice review of this unit. Liking the updated presentation style. Key travel has gone from 1.8mm (P15/P17 gen 2) to 1.5mm as Lenovo is standardizing most of the Thinkpad line on it. Still enjoying my P72 from 2018 and still a beast for what I do. Glad to see 16:10 finally making an appearance in the P line but a bit sad there is no more 17' Thinkpad

Great review!! Thx....I just received a P16 gen 1 vPRO i7 64GB RAM, 2TB SSD, NVIDIA RTX A2000 8GB GPU and mine came with a usb-c RJ45 adapter in the box!! I usually leave this in the office and sometimes travel with it. So the bulk does not bother me. This is a corporate replacement for a 4 year old P52 i7 64GB RAM top end display and graphics...kind of heavy at 8lbs... which has been on life support for a while with a fan/heat issue. I'm just now setting up the new computer with software (GIS and CADD systems and database / ETL development... data heavy stuff) Thx again for the review, seems this replacement will not disappoint... same lighted keyboard layout and will run faster, quieter, cooler. I will chime in if I have any major snags.

Bought a low spec model of this 2 months ago. Planning to gradually upgrade once in a while. Hasn't disappointed thus far. Only down side is that it's short of enough ports for the size and very uncomfortable on the lap as it's got thick rubber feet pads at the bottom for ventilation. The weight definitely makes it too tough on the lap. Who am I to judge, it's meant to be a deskbased PC.

This is an Excellent PC from Lenovo in my opinion with 645 nits of brightness as per Andrew's measurements, nice webcam and mic qualities as well. A nice port selection and good battery life rounds up the ThinkPad P16 Gen 1. Noticeably missing is that RJ45 port which may be a turn-off to some. Excellent review once again Andrew!! 👍😁

    My first impressions:
Fast, nice big screen, looks to be a capable machine.
Personally I don't like an offset keyboard, I'd prefer no number pad and a keyboard aligned horizontally centered with the display.
The keyboard travel is (like every other lappy I see these days) too shallow for my tastes. Fortunately I will only need to occasionally use the keyboard.
The real surprise for me is that it advertises 3 usb-c ports supporting power delivery, but it does not charge over usb-c. It wants 170/230W, so it won't even try to charge via usb-c. According to Lenovo forums, it does support "power delivery for charging external devices only". So it's a usb-c hub for power delivery. Cynical me thinks this feature may have been added solely to claim usb-c power delivery on the spec sheet.
    Don't lose that power brick!

Great comment! I'm typing this on a comfy W530 keyboard and it's a pleasure to type on it. I hear older Thinkpads were even better.
Shame Lenovo went with this type of super thin chiclet keyboard, totally ignoring the requests of their users. It looks thinner than that of the the P1. But I'm glad they still offer a trackpoint option, which many of us still use. I do CAD and setup Max scenes with the trackpoint while flying or traveling etc, something you can't comfortably do with trackpads.

I ordered the top end of this machine and unfortunately had to return it after two weeks. The machine itself along with the monstrous power adapter is just too heavy to carry around. Despite being Linux certified, the support was wonky and had to spend many hours to get some some hardware to work. Also had trouble with my dual Lenovo Gen32 QC 10 setup - Windows 11 randomly switched one off. The fans are noisy under high load and the claimed ±7 hours of battery life doesn't really last that long. On my normal workloads (Running 1-2 VMs for dev work), the battery lasted about 2 hours. After a few tweaks, I was able to get 4-5 hours. Went back to a 2019 Macbook Pro with an eGPU.

Lack of inbuilt ethernet, at least 1gig kills its viability as a mobile workstation. Baffling oversight from Lenovo, for an otherwise decent looking chassis. It's not like it doesn't have the space for it. Anyway, great review.

Thanks for the review Andrew. I have had two of these and both had back light flicker and track pad issues. For me, the back light flicker was easily visible when I set the background to medium grey and cranked up the intensity. I'd be curious to know your method. As far as the track pad, the top right corner of the track pad had almost as much travel as the bottom right corner. There were also times when the track pad wouldn't respond to a tap - I had to move my finger to a different location on the track pad to get a response. I still like the design of the machine, but I'm a bit nervous about trying another.

I bought this for work to run 3D and MS Oculus. I had Power issues when I was travelling. The Laptop didn't go back to Power Supply Charge after switching to Battery with an error on bootup. Then I did a whole bunch of Lenovo Updates but still failed. The fix was to do a COMPLETE DISCHARGE, by removing the whole PC back panel. A BIG -ve on Battery power options. Not sure if is persistent but read online a lot of people with similar issues.

I have owned this laptop as my daily since autodesk university this past year. It’s a bit heavy but I didn’t expect a lightweight for this class of workstation.
I have the hx class processor, 64g ddr5, 2 tb ssd, and the a4000 gpu
My biggest complaint is that the cpu will not boost to anywhere near the levels I expect. My primary software used is autodesk inventor and autocad electrical and it really does feel comparable to my desktop 12900ks w/ 3080 but there are times I would like to have the extra cpu clock speed.
I have looked at other laptops with this processor and 3080 class processors and they have a significantly higher output power supply. Possibly choked back?

The new P16 is nothing like the P15 and P17 series we're used to. This doesn't look like ThinkPad. This looks like a gaming laptop. It's also less practical for a workstation: less performance, fewer ports... I bought the P17 Gen 2 and it's been my last chance for a proper ThinkPad workstation. Sure it doesn't have an integrated optical drive like the older models, but at least it has 1x ethernet port and 2x USB drives. I would've loved one more, but compared to this new P16 disappointment, it's a charm! There's no reason to buy a ThinkPad anymore, you might as well get a MacBook Pro...

Less performance? I have this same laptop 12950HX and run a 23,100 on R23 and all I did was repaste with TPM7950 (pad not paste). Even without a repaste a P16 with a 12950HX will absolutley destroy any P17. ANyone buying a P17 or P15 over a P16 with a 12950HX is a fucking lunatic. You can charge it exclusively via the Lenovo's proprietary power port.
Together with the "docking station" you need two power connections - one for the docking station and one for the laptop itself.
That's absolutely braindead. An idiot must have designed this. My company buyed it. Personally, I would have never ever.
I don't want to be forced to carry the power adapter with me all the time. And with two power adapters it needs more energy than necessary.
By the way, the docking station becomes very hot, thus a lot of energy is going lost here, too.
