I'm sorry man it's just the genie is not going back in the bottle. Human voice action like hand sewing are going to have to transition into a luxury item instead of a necessity. It's also true that indie games fundamentally need to cut corners for money. VA is not going away but a paradigm shift is happening. As a programmer AI is coming for me as well, there's nothing I can do about it. I'm instead trying to incorporate it into my workflow to make my work cheaper and my life easier and faster. I suspect VAs could do the same. Imagine that you provide sample voices created by yourself to an AI that you train. You then use that AI to provide incredibly cheap voice actor for little effort to an indie studio. Then if they decide they want to go from the AI to your actual voice to get a bit more personality and life they can then pay you for the real deal more expensive experience.

Technology has always changed the job market and will continue to do so for the rest of human existance. I dont get why people are so butthurt over "creative" jobs being on the chopping block while they happliy buy cheap clothes made by machines that took the jobs of many tailors and seamstresses. Or buy ikea furniture made by machines that took the jobs from carpenters. Or buy cheap food planted and harvested by machines that took the jobs from farmhands. The problem with AI voices is that its not quite there yet. Its a quality issue, not a "they are taking our jobs" issue. Tech is always gonna make some jobs disappear and new ones appear. Deal with it or get left behind.

Dont know how i got here, but AI will replace a lot of voice acting. Good human voiceacting will always be a bit better, because it has more direction, but AI is just cheaper and faster. Why settle for humans.

AI WILL replace voice acting. No question. If you're a small dev and you have $5k to allocate, you want to allocate that as efficiently as possible. Spending $30 on convincing AI voices as opposed to the full $5k on a VA is a no-brainer. If you're a big company, it's even more convincing-now you can save money but also rapidly change dialogue and reiterate parts of the game while in development without spending more to get a VA back in the studio.
Yeah, it sucks that an industry is going to be killed if you're in that industry. You better get that AI tax funded basic minimum income lobby group going sooner rather than later.

It is becoming crazy. At the moment, AI Voice Acting is not a replacement for proper voice acting... but it is certainly an option for smaller devs as you mentioned.
Especially for indie devs where you might not have a real time way of communicating with your voice actor often, meaning any changes will take a long time.

@@SioxerNikita you know what I would do to stay relevant as a VA? I'd make a massive dataset of my own voice, thousands of hours of me acting every imaginable emotion, in every tone and range of my voice. Then I'd train an AI on it and lease that AI out for $100, + 1% of the gross take of whatever project you make with it for leading roles, .5% for supporting roles/narration, .25% for minor roles/system dialogue. Then I'd go get another job and treat the income from that as supplementary.

      @@jadedandbitter Lol.
I still love that people have been replaced in industries for ever...
And journalists and plenty of people that weren't replaced just said "Go find another job", until it is THEIR jobs on the line.

@@SioxerNikita yeah, its not that Im unsympathetic. Its that if you see a massive unstoppable boulder rolling down a hill towards someone's house, you advise them to escape, not to try and stop the unstoppable. Doesn't mean I don't feel empathy for them losing their house, but for pete's sake get out of the f--king house before you are crushed.

@@jadedandbitter It is just, some of these people were probably telling tellers that were afraid of losing their jobs over self-checkout, to find new jobs...
It'll be a while until AI is a genuine replacement for a proper voice actor for serious work, but voice actors need to stop whining... and so does artists... and everyone else...
When mechanized farming became a thing, 90% of people in Europe lost their jobs... 90 fucking percent....

All innovation causes job loss. Saying AI cause voice actor job loss is like saying that sewing machines took jobs away from tailors. If you don't like technology taking away jobs, then buy hand made cloths, organic food, human chopped trees, etc, etc. Let's see if YOU can afford it.
