- From the 1959 "Mad Scenes" recital with Maria Callas.
Imogene: Maria Callas
Conductor: Nicola Rescigno
Philharmonia Orchestra and Chorus
I think that this particular aria is one of THE most beautiful pieces of music ever composed.
Thank you for posting the piano/vocal score - I really enjoyed this!
I totally agree with you
That's how I feel. Thank you. I always go back to this glorious music. ❤
GRAZIE!!!!
This aria is glorious. Bel Canto has my vote
Thankyou for giving me the piano score and words with the singing of the 'finale' of Il Pirata. Great!
I haven’t heard this in a while but I remember it as very compelling. It came with a recording of her singing the mad scene in Hamlet and the final scene in Anna Bolena. I like that there was a chorus and other singers as well so it felt more like a performance than a recital.
I still have it on vinyl from '65 and it's almost worn out!!!....unforgettable recordings....
PS.....the effect this album had on a 15 year old I can't begin to explain!.....well I'm playing it 53 years later so what does that tell you!!! ....
Yes, and the LP is one of the glories of the age of the gramophone. She gives a masterclass in what bel canto singing is all about. No one has been able to come within a thousand miles of what she accomplished vocally and dramatically in each one of the scenes presented.

I first learned IL PIRATA not from this Studio 'recital' LP but from a live performance by Callas...this was in the mid-'70s in NYC and we would go down to the Village to a record shop that had 'pirated' recordings - live performances that weren't legally available. I remember every note, every nuance of Callas' performance. This Studio recording is probably a little more precise but no less dramatic. Thanks so much!
La migliore in assoluto
Fantástica!!!
Good choice and great job
Martín who cares? Post your own!
I see your upload... it’s very nice. Rigoletto is one of my favorites truly
Grazie
She is brilliant, but this is a good example of the fact that she sang all her bel canto roles with significant cuts, most traditional for the time.
It was the fashion at the time, unfortunately, and by the time uncut performances were seeing a comeback, operatic singing was no longer at the level of Callas and her predecessors.
@@aclassicaltrove Yes, it is ironic. Today we hear complete Normas from singers that have no business attempting the part.
She did not only cut bel canto roles, she even cut some verismo like Madama Butterfly, she even wished if she can cut Vissi d'arte as she believed it had no place in the drama progress. Sometimes she's right to keep the action moving as both her and Serafin agreed, but in many cases it's such a loss.
@@Khalid7a I agree w callas. Vissi d'arte is out of place in the middle of tosca & scarpias drama
Strepitosa.Nessuna come lei.
14:26 amazing chest voice
8:24-9:06 😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
My favorite part as well. It's so beautiful. When she performed this live at 9:07 she puts her hand up around her head simulating her mind blowing bc its the part she loves.
