It takes an enormous amount of desire to sing like this. The singer must not sing the music. She must BECOME the music and the character. Callas had the unique ability to inhabit each character she sang...and inhabit every note and expression....so that she lived that moment as if she had invented it. Very few singers are willing or able to go that far.

This is maddeningly beautiful. The drama - it pours forth. Exquisite phrasing. Perfect intonation. This is a hugely demanding Assoluta part. Can it ever get better than this? I doubt it.
Here is Callas' greatness in a nutshell. This has never been more beautifully, and movingly sung--at least of the recordings I know. The pain of the woman--Callas, not only Anna Bolena--is overwhelming.
And let me add: thank goodness this was a broadcast performance and recorded so that we have it today. But--I wonder how many other Callas "miracles" there were which were not broadcast or recorded and thus lost (except to those who were present). I'm thinking of her "Don Carlo" for example. To say nothing of her Brünnhilde. And if only we had her 1954 La Scala "Lucia" with Karajan in decent sound.

Maria at the very apex of her career. So sad that just a year later she would be on the outs with La Scala and her rapid vocal decline in the next two years. This and her Berlin Lucia with Herbert Von Karajan will rank as two of the greatest opera performances of all time.
Nearly everyone's voice gives out in the end. But most singers don't push themselves to the limits that Callas did from 1947 (or before--we don't have recorded evidence). No one, no matter who they are, could have the performance history she had from 1947 to 1959 and still have their voice intact.
You are absolutely 100% on target. No voice could withstand the demands Callas put on her voice from 1949-1959 and not pay the consequences. But would she have been the legendary Callas if she didn't? Listening to her is like watching a 3D movie ------ she hurls herself right into your face. To his day, she refuses to be forgotten.
Well yea, Pirata in May of '58 was the last thing she sang there before she quit La Scala (she was over it). She did come back the following year to record Gioconda, but by then she was already with Onassis. She didn't sing live there again until '61 I believe, so the Pirata of '58 was the last performance of her great years at La Scala :)

Indeed, you ARE the best! This is so much clearer than the EMI I have, at points I had to go back to listen again, just to make sure it was the same performance. One has a much better sense just how incredibly BIG her voice was over the entire range, and how crisp was Gavanezzi's conducting. Grazie grazie grazie!
Cuidado para quien no este preparado para la potencia y el volumen de Callas, realiza el acto como un equilibrista, acumulando tensión y magia inexplicable, hace de Anna Bolena un milagro! Muchas pueden seguirla en el camino, imitarla, pero jamás alcanzarla, y es que el grado de histrionismo vocal (como actoral) sigue sin rivales. Este es uno de los pilares de la Callas, una noche donde todo ocurre maravillosamente, el ambiente perfecto para que la Divina haga una de sus proezas sobre el escenario. Brava Callas!!!

Ma due cose si fa necessario da dire: 1) la Callas era diggià magra nel 57, anno delle Sonnambula e Bolena, e la sua voce è nel splendore, onnipotente e sul suo intero commando. È molto importante segnalare questo, perchè è un fatto che smentisce le voci chi dicono che al dimagrire, la Callas perse la voce. Un voce perduta non potrebbe giammai - nemmeno da lontano - fare quello che la Callas si splendidamente fa qui. 2) Pare che nessuno si è reso conto di quello che è accaduto con il coro durante l'aria finale Coppia Iniqua: il coro si è talmente impressionato e affascinato con la forza drammatica della Callas, che il coro non cantò niente di quello che era previsto per il coro cantare, cosicchè la Callas rimane dicendo : tacete, tacete, cessate, cessate, a un coro che già era taciuto e rimase muto e nella coda dell'aria, la Callas fece la sua linea da sola, senza il coro, quello che risulta un'esperienza e un avvenimento molto particolare in una rappresentazione lírica. Gavvazzeni non è dovuto restare contento di questo. E se la Callas non fosse l'altissima professionale che era, avrebbe restato confusa e disarmata da questo scontro.

She was a great singer. I think we all know about her vocal problems at times but her interpretive ability even in these recording is so commanding. Few can sing these arias at all but to do so with such feeling is amazing.
I agree whit LohengrinTh EMI should hire this guy to remaster the entire live catalogue of Callas...Ifigenia, traviata whit giulini, Aida with del Monaco, Andrea Chenier Etccccc....
I've never been a huge Callas fan (don't hate me please!) but this is some amazing singing. I wish she had also done a studio recording of this. Sensational!!
She did a studio version of only this scene. I think it’s included on “Mad scenes”. Callas wasn’t very business smart and reacted emotionally when a cooler was required. She had the leverage to force EMI to record some of her famous roles but didn’t or recorded them with lackluster colleagues so the label owner/director Walter Legge could save money. Compare and notice how his wife’s (Elisabeth Schwarzkopf) recordings were carefully produced withe best casting and conducting available. Callas deserved better!
One thing that is remarkable is that one individual sustains the drama throughout the entire scene. Callas was working with first-class colleagues, but ultimately she was the one who sustained the drama by sheer force of personality. Callas was the drama!

Muchas pueden seguirla en el camino, imitarla, pero jamás alcanzarla, y es que el grado de histrionismo vocal (como actoral) sigue sin rivales. Callas Divina, sublime, impareggiabile. Ma due cose si fa necessario da dire:
1) la Callas era diggià magra nel 57, anno delle Sonnambula e Bolena, e la sua voce è nel splendore, onnipotente e sul suo intero commando. È molto importante segnalare questo, perchè è un fatto che smentisce le voci chi dicono che al dimagrire, la Callas perse la voce.
Un voce perduta non potrebbe giammai - nemmeno da lontano - fare quello che la Callas si splendidamente fa qui.
2) Pare che nessuno si è reso conto di quello che è accaduto con il coro durante l'aria finale Coppia Iniqua: il coro si è talmente impressionato e affascinato con la forza drammatica della Callas, che il coro non cantò niente di quello che era previsto per il coro cantare, cosicchè la Callas rimane dicendo : tacete, tacete, cessate, cessate, a un coro che già era taciuto e rimase muto e nella coda dell'aria, la Callas fece la sua linea da sola, senza il coro, quello che risulta un'esperienza e un avvenimento molto particolare in una rappresentazione lírica.
Gavvazzeni non è dovuto restare contento di questo. E se la Callas non fosse l'altissima professionale che era, avrebbe restato confusa e disarmata da questo scontro.

She was a great singer. I think we all know about her vocal problems at times but her interpretive ability even in these recording is so commanding. Few can sing these arias at all but to do so with such feeling is amazing.

I've never been a huge Callas fan (don't hate me please!) but this is some amazing singing. I wish she had also done a studio recording of this. Sensational!!

She did a studio version of only this scene. I think it’s included on “Mad scenes”. Callas wasn’t very business smart and reacted emotionally when a cooler was required. She had the leverage to force EMI to record some of her famous roles but didn’t or recorded them with lackluster colleagues so the label owner/director Walter Legge could save money. Compare and notice how his wife’s (Elisabeth Schwarzkopf) recordings were carefully produced withe best casting and conducting available. Callas deserved better!

One thing that is remarkable is that one individual sustains the drama throughout the entire scene. Callas was working with first-class colleagues, but ultimately she was the one who sustained the drama by sheer force of personality. Callas was the drama!

Doesn't this prove that her voice could be beautiful when she wished so. Sometimes you forget this is a vocal and think you hear some kind of violin.

She has been the best singer of her time and till now she remains the best. Others can have a more beautiful voice, better agility.... but she is the character she sings. The emotion I get every time hearing Callas cannot be compared in hearing nobodyelse
