      @@akashravishankar You mean how anime brought a bunch of people to Germany, already somewhat self taught on the language?
      But joking aside, I think most people appreciate any attempt what so ever, especially from Americans. It's all too easy for me to sit in the melting pot of people and forget oh yeah, some countries are like 95% one race. And even the countries that do have English tourists and immigrants appreciate it.
      I mean, I went to Montreal a couple times and I know 99% of people are bilingual. But I made sure to learn "I'm so sorry, I don't speak French. Do you speak English?" I'd never spoken French and my pronunciation was atrocious, literally so bad someone didn't understand me at first. Yet every person but one broke out in big smiles whether they did or not, because I didn't just assume. But the best was the 14 year old madlad who got so insulted by my question that his little fit actually made me accidentally laugh... loud. What a bonus.

    The salt-covered Jizo statue is at the Taisoji Temple in Shinjuku-sanchome. Visitors are not supposed to add salt to it. Instead, they are supposed to remove salt from it and apply it to whatever body part ails them. But more important than the salt-covered statue is the Emma statue, carefully locked in an adjacent building called the "Emmadou." This particular Emma is a notorious child-earing demon that parents use to frighten naughty children into behaving. The Emmadou is locked, but there is a button to push that illuminates the statues' face inside and you can see its terrible countenance.

    I think it’s very cool that you know several languages. In fact I would love to learn more languages as well. But here’s the thing…..Why does everyone look at you shocked that you speak their language? We don’t look at other ethnicities speaking English like that. Why do you think it’s so shocking to them?

    • @scootscootriot
      @scootscootriot 2 роки тому +4

      Well, as to the Chinese, mandarin is ridiculously hard to speak, to the point of not even being intelligible when spoken by a non native speaker. So it’s shocking when a non native speaker can not only communicate, but sound fluent. As to Japanese, Japan is one of (if not the most) homogenous countries in the world. There aren’t many other places that you could compare the experience of a Japanese person encountering a non Japanese person who can speak fluent Japanese.

    • @AmbiCahira
      @AmbiCahira 2 роки тому +1

      English speakers just assume everyone learned English in school and if they didn't learn it then they better get to work and start learning it like everybody else, but with countries where almost nobody is learning it you get positively surprised and flattered that someone put in the hours, hard work and effort into learning that specific language. There's only about 5 million people speaking Finnish for example so if you'd be a foreigner speaking Finnish well they'll respect you a lot for loving their language enough to devote that much time to learn it. They have to learn both English and Swedish and often one more language like German, French or Spanish so they know how hard language learning is. If America succeeded in teaching Spanish to bilingual level and fluency I think people would feel more humble towards foreigners that achieved a high level fluency in English because you'd know the effort it takes to become fluent.

    I would love to be able to impress Japanese people with my ability to speak their language as it should be, but even before beginning, it is a very daunting task to undertake. For me, it is extremely hard to retrain a brain to learn a language at all, let alone, Japanese, with its different contextual differences in sentence structure. I have yet to find a quality system to learn from. But if I ever got the chance to go to an Asian country, I would be very respectful and friendly. It's just the way I am.

    what i can say, in china its easy to go arround with english language, had no issues in Bejing and Shanghai, nearly everywhere i went, everybody spoke +- decent and understandable english. In Tokyo, Japanese are quite bad in english. Even if they try to speak, its terrible. I had hard time asking for dirrections. I also can speak Latvian ( native language ), Russian and German, wouldnt try those, since English was already bad for them.

    • @brianhillis3701

      I was in Russia and do not speak Russian, I was having trouble with a breakfast order. A German man asked me in bad English if he could help. We discovered our Spanish was good enough to communicate and he had the cook fix the problem. He fought in Stalingrad during the war and was back to see the battlefields and the city. The Russians were eager to talk with him. I never learned if he had been captured or how he learned Russian. Knowing languages helps everybody. People are nice governments can be evil. I am an engineer and was working with Russian engineers. We were able to communicate with diagrams, a few words of each others language and math. We actually told the translator to take a break because we communicated better without her because she didn't know the science and engineering terms and it was easier to make progress without having to explain things. In essence the engineers spoke the same language.
