Hey, just watched your video for a quick fix on a door that keeps swinging open. I watched 5 other videos but liked and subscribed b/c yours was the best! Having a video that addresses the problem with a professional fix and a quick fix brings a lot of credibility which is why I hope to watch more of your videos. The humor is spot on too lol thanks for the video!
Wife was just complaining of this a couple days ago. I said I'd fix it......... but I really wasn't sure how I was going to do that lol. Perfect timing video, thank you sir!
As a carpenter with over 50 years experience a point of clarification. Level refers to the horizontal, plumb refers to the vertical. For example, the door header may be out of level and the style might be out of plumb. I also preferred to remove hinge pins with a nail set or drift pin rather than a screw or nail.
@Get on the cross and don’t look back people wonder why less and less of us are going to church nowadays. The older I get the more I realize how narrow-minded church-going people are
OH MY GOD! For 32 years we've lived with a swinging bathroom door which has required us to kick a steel weight around on the floor as a door stop. Can't wait to try this.
Thanks a lot for the tip! I've lived with that annoying problem for twelve years and it only took two minutes to fix.The entry door took a little longer because it's a heavier door.
Here is a tip for removing and installing the hinge pin with no damage to the door or frame. Get a plastic ice cream container and cut the corner of the container about 50mm each way from the corner. Now place that L shaped plastic under the hinge and drive the pin out with a nail or whatever you normally use and a hammer. The plastic ice cream corner protects the door and frame from any blows of the hammer. Same way to drive it in as well. Simple, cheap and works a treat.
Hey man, I finally combed the world over for the last RAS for sale. TOTAL game changer!! Highly recommend that scribe tutorial video you mentioned. My first attempt was about as good as I’ve ever done with a belt sander in 15 years in the biz.
Along with several other people, I just implemented this solution myself! Genius! Since the downward-facing part of the barrell was closed, I took the long way - I placed two wedges under the door to hold it in place, (a couple of my kids' board-books work great as spacers to get the exact height too), 'stood' the door in place with an f-clamp, and then unscrewed the top hinges, before taking to the vice, pulling the pin with a pair of vice grips and then gave it a few small whacks to bend with a hammer. This made putting the now-slightly-bent pin back into the barell much easier, as I didn't have to worry about the door jamb, frame, angle, etc. (Whack with rubber mallot back into place). Securing the door first makes removing the hinges easy and stress-free, and the door no longer (hilariously) traps the dog inside by itself!

@@TheFunnyCarpenter I love it! ❤ I have a request/question ...should I ask in a comment? Or do you have an email so I can send a photo? It has to do with plaster walls in our old house. I'd love your input!

Wow. I was just asked to do something about a door like this over breakfast. What timing. Also, that niche behind your tub looks like it would've been great fun for the drywallers.
Excellent question- in my experience It won’t make it squeak. I’m not exactly sure why exactly doors squeak, it’s definitely metal on metal rubbing in the hinge, but as to the mechanics I’m not sure. Would make for an interesting video though…stay tuned
I have 3 doors in my 17 year old home that have had this problem since the house was built. I have always used this fix, but every 2-3 years I have to regrease the pin to stop it from squeaking. Spray type lubricants don’t seem to last very long
Thanks - great tip. I have a 110 year old timber framed house - nothing is plumb, level or square! This will simply solve a problem I have been avoiding for a while 😄.
Thank you! This is even simpler than what I was doing, which was to remove the pin, take a hammer and use it to strike one or more hinge barrel sections to reduce the inside diameter, and then re-insert the pin.
Thanks! I was being a bit wimpy with the pins at first. Bend more than you think you need to and do all three pins. Two bent pins didn't cut it for me.
Nice trick 👍. I have a door the does this but I actually like that it opens on its own. I'll keep this trick in mind for doors I don't want opening or closing on their own.
Also, you can knock the pin out, slip a peice of small wire down the hole and knock the pin back in. Leave plenty of wire on top and bottom so you can grab the wire when you're done and wiggle it to snap it off flush. If its not quite stiff enough just add another wire until its just right.
So how does it exactly work? By increasing the friction in that hinge? It might work for a while but might develop some squeaking very soon and shortly after that the original problem returns. If the door open on you it means the top hinge is closer to you then the bottom one. You need just unscrew the top hinge and fix it back a little deeper (farther from you). Or you bring the bottom one closer to you. Of course the middle one would need to be adjusted accordingly at the end so all three are in one straight line.
First comment i've seen with the true correct easy fix. By bending the pin you just create more wear on the pin and the hinge and end up with a ever losing battle. By shimming the appropriate hinges you can level the plane the door swings on without ever ruining the hinges. Fix it one time and the right way and never fix it again.
Your timing is perfect for me. Just installed 3 doors. 2 work fine but the 3rd has the auto swing open feature turned on. No way do I want to uninstall and reinstall the door. Thanks!!!
Will this work for a front door that slams hard due to cross breeze from sliding door on the opposite side of the room? We like to keep the slider open during the summer. Any suggestions?
Great vid. Lots of good tips and perspectives. Best tip on the video? Painters tape on the hammer. You have saved me a lot of touch up / clean up work going forward. This tip earned you a sub from me. Thanks! 😎
Another way to create more friction is by wrapping masking tape once around the pin so the pin sits even tighter in the hinge This also works for doors that don't have separate pins you can take out, for example if the door can be taken out just by lifting it up a bit, you put a bit of tape around the part of the hinge that is screwed to the door frame and then place the door where it was before
I was just watching videos for tips, then I saw this one.....got out of bed at midnight and fixed my bathroom door in less than 5 minutes! What a quick easy fix!
There is another possible way to do this if you have a little bit of room between the door and frame. If you unscrew 1 hinge at a time and put a very thin, tapered shim behind 1-3 of the hinges, in the direction you need, it often fixes the issue without having a sticky door.
I use the pin that comes out of a lav sink pop up drain hardware, the part one actuates the drain with to drive up the hinge pin to remove them. Then yes a slight bend in the hinge pin fixes out of plumb doors.

@@TheFunnyCarpenter umm wouldnt bending the hinge pin chew out its mounting holes over time & cause excessive wear & possibly other problems?
Awesome quick and free tip!! Thanks. Just to be a nit, the door swings because it's out of plumb, not out of level.

Agreed, but…… not to be an even bigger nit, he could have his level on the top of door. Then indeed level would be the correct term
@@andylink5818,...NOPE the jamb (where hinges are mounted) is out of plumb.
