Richard Carpenter plays his ideas at the piano in this unique interview

- The Carpenters are one of the best-selling music artists of all time with three number-one singles, five number-two singles, 15 number-one hits (Adult Contemporary) and 12 top-10 singles. They have sold more than 90 million records worldwide. Karen Carpenter is justly considered the greatest pop vocalists to grace a microphone, and perhaps less known as a superb drummer. In 2003, I interviewed producer/arranger/singer Richard Carpenter for my BBC Radio 2 series “Pop Arrangers” which later became my book “The Invisible Artist” (with a chapter on Carpenter). Here he discusses the arranging and production techniques used in the making of such hits as Close To You, Ticket To Ride, Calling Occupants, We’ve only Just Begun, and many more. Where else can you hear Richard Carpenter demonstrating his ideas at the piano? A unique look at one of the true masters of pop.

I'm a drummer musician by trade & I know exactly what Richard carpenter is talking about, he just had a god gifted talent to write & put the music together which if your not a musician you'll never know what he's talking about, I play the carpenter's music at weddings & party's and it's Really what keeps me playing and making money so thank you Richard and Karen for that fabulous music you made over the years, Karen R.I.P. YOU ARE TRULY TRULY MISSED EVERYDAY GOD BLESS YOUR SOUL. 🥁🎼🎵🎺🎸🎹🎤💔💔🙏🙏
This is probably the best Richard Carpenter interview of all time. One of the only interviews, post 1983, that the anorexia isn't mentioned.
Thanks for that. My interviews are not about private and painful matters. They are about music. All the best, and check out my other interviews.
The complexity of the music allowed it to be heard in a simple way. Richard and Brian Wilson both on that elite level, no one better at it than them.
This is absolutely the kind of interview I would conduct with Richard if I had the chance. Outstanding job and it felt good hearing the excitement of Richards going back in time and bringing all those wonderful memories only a Recording Engineer/Producer could understand. This is what people need to hear more of!!! Great Job my friend!!
Thanks so much! Lots more in the vaults and I'm recording lots of new fascinating interviews. Please subscribe to my youtube channel to not miss anything.
This, by far, is the most important & best interview w/Richard that I have ever heard. You asked the questions that 90% of people didn't know was vital to their sound. This was wonderful. Thank you.
Thank YOU. All I do with Radio Richard is made worthwhile when I get messages like yours. Please be part of our conversation!
i could listen to richard talk for hours. very well spoken man
This is a GREAT interview for musicians. Thank you Richard and Richard.
Lots more in the vaults and I'm recording lots of new fascinating interviews. Please subscribe to my youtube channel to not miss anything.
Thank you Richard Niles for this interview. This is pure heaven on earth. While Karen was the “voice” of Carpenters, many people fail to understand and recognize Richard ‘s contribution and importance to their success. IMHO without Richard there would have never been “Carpenters” and what a tragedy that would be for all of us. “Carpenters” still play in my home- and often!
More heaven waiting for you if you subscribe and listen to all the other amazing interviews in pop, jazz and classical music. THANKS!!!
Even if Karen was the voice, Richard's singing is the salt in the mix that makes the Carpenters sound work. Without his singing it wouldn't be the earth shattering sound it is.
Pure gold Richard! Wonderful! Thank you!
And you will be featured soon. XXXXX
This was a Masterclass in music creation, production and recording. Just a treat to hear. Ticket to Ride when I first heard it sounded strange because of the original one still in my head. However over time The Carpenter's version has really grown on me. Great to hear Richard explain the nuances of it. I just love the ending of it. THe pathos is much more apparent which Richard and Karen really brought forth to make it a true masterpiece!!!!! The interviewer was brilliant in his questions and observations to draw Richard into a great conversation. Early Russian influences ...the Slavic mindset of irony and pathos..I can hear that in a lot of Richard's arrangements. Rachmaninoff. When he played parts of Superstar reminded me of that great composer. I think as time goes by more and more people are appreciating the artistry and sophistication of The Carpenters and their place in music history. I was 10 years old in 1970 and throughout the 70's I remember hearing their songs on the radio but not really paying attention to it because it was a bit "soft" for me and the kind of square image that was created about them. I was more into Deep Purple, Emerson Lake and Palmer and Led Zeppelin. Great musicianship in those bands but then as I got older and more into playing and trying to write my own songs it gave me a greater appreciation into the craft of writing and arranging music and lyrics. Also from watching my nephew who studied at Berklee for piano (And has a similar opinion of modern singing as RIchard), and was writing musicals in the style of Cole Porter, Frank Loesser and Jerry Herman to name a few . It really expanded my view on the craft of composing and arranging and what is involved. Richard is absolutely right....the music that stays with you for a long time is always about the melody. I would put the Carpenters along with their lyricist John Bettis in the same league as all those great American Composers for arranging and composing. The way they were marketed back in the 70's has fallen away thankfully and the talent has shone through!!! Bravo!!!
Thanks, so much. I really love doing interviews when I hear that absolute love for music and commitment to it. And when they reveal that personal motivation to create a new sound. Please subscribe.
The Carpenter/Bettis song book is only a few songs. Probably not even twenty. So you can't put them up there with those great song writing teams you mentioned. Maybe most of the first album, after that: I know I need to be in love, Crescent Noon, Mr. Guder, Top of the World, Only Yesterday, Saturday (lightweight), Drusilla Penny (lightweight), I'm Caught Between Goodbye And I Love You (not a great song, in contrast to Richard's optimism at the time), maybe a few more.
First of all: many thanks for sharing. This is for me, the best interview to Richard Carpenter, technical and emotional, may be because you asked questions that I want to be answered by him and because you added much more interesting questions than that. I think you've got some kind of special gift to do this kind of interview so please keep coming! Already suscribed.
This interview is a goldmine!
Thank you so much for asking such intelligent questions.
This is brilliant! Fascinating insight to the genius that is Richard Carpenter ❤️❤️
Excellent technical interview. So much better than the"what's your favorite color?" typical interview style of others. Please do more of these.
ALL my interviews are like this. I'm glad you enjoyed it and hope you will subscribe and not miss any more. Please check them out! Thanks!
Wow! Thanks so much for sharing this. Richard Carpenter’s thoughts and knowledge on music in general, not only theirs, it’s always fascinating to listen to! Mr. Carpenter himself sounded truly glad to be interviewed by someone who not only wasn’t asking the same old futile questions, but actually contributing to the conversation, AND even surprising him with some thoughts he didn’t even considered before! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks Jose and please SUBSCRIBE to not miss all the other great interviews with incredible artists!
So kind of him to break it down and explain it.
I am not a musician but I thoroughly enjoyed hearing Richard explain his thinking on how he created certain music. To me, Richard is an amazing blend of talent and hard work.
Mr. Niles, thank you so much for this interview. I've read a couple of books about the Carpenters, and have listened to a lot of interviews and watched videos here on youtube. But your video is exactly the kind of in-depth information I hunger for, learning how Richard put the harmonies together, describing his process, really it is mind-blowing.
Thanks for your message! If you like the interview, you would love my book "The Invisible Artist". It has an entire chapter devoted to Richard Carpenter and many other amazing artists. It is available here: amzn.to/3DSJxoB

Very good interview with a great arranger, always just loved the Carpenter songs and takes on songs. Richard Carpenters orchestration on songs and builds are just so right with his late sister’s wonderful voice.
Thanks again Blue, and you are so right!
I will say it again....the mid 50s-70s produced the best music ever in world history. So much creativity and good vibes from that period.
Amen!!!! Look at the Top 50 songs of 1964: jazz, Bossa Nova, Beatles, 4 Seasons, instrumentals, amazing!!
@@MikeSmithEnterprises Yep, and MoTown and semi cross over Country.
Without any real musical knowledge I just marvel and appreciate the work of this man and to think he was able to accomplish this in his early 20’s. Richard and Karen were a once in a lifetime combination.
This is a great interview with the Maestro
Great interview, thank you both.
What a great interview, well done!
Thank you - This is a wonderfully instructive and insightful interview !
Great interview. Richard Niles asked many of the questions that I had and never heard the answer to. Richard Carpenter even made note of it. It was a pleasure listening to it. Thanks!
Thanks, James. I ask all the things I want to know as a music lover. This was one of those great experiences and I'm glad I got the chance to pass it on to other music lovers. Please tell your friends so we can grow our subscribers.
@@DRRICHARDNILES I don't have any friends. The show is great,
Thee best interview ever! Love how you both dig deep into how the structure of the songs were put together.
Thanks, that's exactly why I do this! Please subscribe and don't miss all the great new interviews we have coming up!
Great interview, and Richard is correct, Carpenters music has effected me for more than 50. First love, to now, thank you Richard, and thank you Karen, you are missed.
Oh simply glorious. And so right that arrangers make or break the songs. As a one time arranger so many of your experiences with musicians made such sense to me. Thank you both very much .. what a wonderful listening experience. ❤️🇿🇦
Wow I didn't realize they sold that many records I be one of those buying a record! Wow that is amazing.. Richard is an amazing talent
A superb interview and similar to the Barry Manilow piece, you ask the questions that no one else does and not only do I want to know the answers it is actually historically important. Excellent!
Thanks for noticing! I asked hime the things I had always wanted to know as a fellow musician and arranger. Lots more in the vaults and I'm recording lots of new fascinating interviews. Please subscribe to my youtube channel to not miss anything.
A GREAT INTERVIEW RICHARD! ENJOYED IT VERY MUCH. THANK YOU!!
Thanks! Please tell your friends, and subscribe. More great interviews coming up!
Carpenters Were And Always Will Be One Of My All Time Favorite Groups Just Wish Karen Was Still Here Singing All Thoses Amazing Song's She Sang And They Would Be Singing Alot Of New One's For Sure Richard Was And Still Is Amazing Much Love To You Sweet Karen You Are So Truly Missed ❤️💔
A lot of work goes into perfect simplicity - this is how it’s done. Strange how much maths comes into the art of beauty.
He was a genius of harmony structure.
I'm sure that's true, but you know someone before him that pioneered that modernized choir sound with the close harmony but doesn't get credit for it? Andy Williams as he directed The Osmonds.
Thank you SO much for this!!! I've always wanted to pick Richard's brain!
Thanks for your comment and please SUBSCRIBE to not miss any of the rare interviews I'm posting.
OMG this is a precious gem! Thank you so much Richard and Richard for this!
I know there is an RC interview with him stating KC's vocal range. I am disagreeing with someone! But I want to be 100% accurate! Straight out of his mouth. I don't want to be doubted! Thanks! Admittedly, I haven't finished this video. Too eager to listen!
Just great ! Thanks for this.

I love the Carpenters. The later material was even better, as the songs were more cheerful. “Those Good Old Dreams” is a wonderful, upbeat song. To make the music live on, it must be played, sung, and performed. Make karaoke tracks with visuals so the Japanese can sing at a lounge. Have children perform, “Sing.” At home by myself or with friends, I enjoy using a Casio arranger keyboard, because it has built in rhythms with variations and fills. It is fun singing Carpenter songs.
I wish there was a documentary about Carpenters STUDIO work, like 'Beach Boys classic albums Pet Sounds' but the documentary should cover ALL of Carpenters studio eras, their evolving techniques, arrangements, and epic chorale applications. A docuemnmmtary with a disclaimer at the beginning ( the audio of this film is in Dobly Atmos. We strongly encourage headphones or an Atmos sound system) All the multitracking --- with Atmos? GTFO , that would be badass.
There's genuine psychedelic stuff throughout early Carpenters, I think Richard may have dropped LSD or just possibly he was simply heavily influenced by musicians who have. That first album is SO trippy.
As a fan of hardcore punk, Led Zepplin, White Stripes, and the Beach Boys - I finally made the connection with Carpertners music this year and I experience it so intensely - mentally and physically. They're like Mozart or Bach....I hear masters of music and can't get enough.....All of it, chill-inducing. It's SO SOPHISTICATED musically. Both of them were Masters of the studio and there's no information on this stuff. Every book and documentary is formulaic and not musically intellectual - or they're about eating disorders. What about the MUSIC?? Carpenters have been screwed over, they deserve the Beach Boys' treatment to bring their awareness to more people like me.
Of course this documentary radio show was a way to do what you say. It is the only interview of him at the piano explaining and demonstrating his method. I would be happy to make the documentary you suggest but that would require financial backing! You might enjoy my just released MASTERCLASS with LEO SAYER, the first of a series of masterclasses with great artists, available from ProMix Academy.
Wow! Just Wow! This is a genuine conversation between two artists.
Music, at its root is a language. Few are more adept at this language than Richard Carpenter.
What's frustrating for us fans is how after Karen's death, Richard chose to (for whatever reason ) not be as prolific musically as his immense talent obviously allows. Producing other artists, exploring other genres, film soundtracks, etc. - the possibilities...
Part of the answer may be found in the last third of this interview. (44:37)
Thanks for the 2 WOWs. Lots more waiting for you if you SUBSCRIBE and hear all the other interviews! Thanks!
this is exactly what i wanted to hear explained thanks richard ps i hope you still have the 1970 440 baracuda and dont run her out of gas again !!!

28:06 in musical composing: what is "sock"? same as "kick"?
Yes! pre-70s slang! Thanks for listening. Please tell your friends!
What year was this interview. Great stuff!
2003. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for subscribing!
Out of my curiosity, how did you set that up?
I was a BBC broadcaster on Radio 2 for over 20 years. I wrote the show and the BBC set up the interviews I wanted.
Richard said it politely....I'll say it less politely.....Pop music today sucks.
too bad theres no video of this
~ Wish Richard could work with Brandi Carlile ~ Write and arrange for her. 1111
I'd love to!
It is and will be very hard to separate the musical legacy to the early passing of Karen simply because it begs the unanswered question why didn't anyone try to save her
Well, I feel that is a private matter. What I wanted to do was hear Richard explain his musical concept and he demonstrated that beautifully. Please subscribe and don't miss all the great new interviews we have coming up!
@@DRRICHARDNILES Private matter? At 17, Karen was offered a recording contract by Joe Osborne. When she was 19, the Carpenters were offered a contract by Herb Alpert because of Karen's voice. For all intents and purposes, Karen's voice is the reason there is even a Carpenters sound.
@@eisenjocasaclang1701 You misunderstood my reply. Of. course her voice is one of the greatest in popular music. By "private matter", I mean that Karen's anorexia and her mental problems were NOT the subject of my interview. The subject was how the Carpenters chose songs, wrote songs, and arranged, composed and produced their music. I am very happy to have achieved that. My intention was not to discuss her health issues. To the best of my knowledge, all those around her tried very hard to help her. But it is not.a simple matter to help someone in her condition and I was not there to speculate about a private and painful subject.
@@DRRICHARDNILES You are absolutely right. I was not there either. Hence, as much as one would like to simply focus of the musical part of their legacy and Richard's talent, it is really hard not to think of the tragic end to their sound once Karen passed. To my knowledge and I could be very wrong, Richard has only one top 40 hit since Karen's passing despite working with Dionne W, Dusty S and Petula C among others
@@DRRICHARDNILES great response. She should be remembered as the greatest female singer of alltime, not her personal problems.
I'm not happy with pop music either. 70's was the absolute 💯 best.
This guy interviewing him whistles when he talks I can't listen to this
Okey dokey, it was a brilliant interview despite you not listening.
