- Bart Herbison with the Nashville Songwriters Association International talks with legendary songwriter John Bettis about one of 38 songs he wrote with Richard and Karen Carpenter
John was one of the best writers ever........I knew his brother...........and nephew
This song will never age.
John's humility is so refreshing. Tnx so much for posting
So wonderful to hear John describe how he and Richard wrote and how Richard designed the melody around Karen's voice. As they used to say, 'The money is in the Basement'! What a thrill it must have been (and John describes it so vividly) to hear Karen's first pass at the song and knowing they had written a hit already. John Bettis is a legend!
There was always magic when Karen sang musical notes. It seemed as though it was effortless but John peels back the curtain and we see that Richard did the grunt work before Karen delivered those sonic masterpieces. I came away appreciating Richard just a little bit more.
Thank you for sharing such a great story. What a great song writer you are. What a great talent Karen Carpenter was. Thanks again!
This was awesome! Great storytelling.
This was a great interview !!! Thank you!!
Thank You John for the great lyrics. These are lyrics I fell in love with the first time I heard them.Just like all of your songs.Love You John!
It's 2021 and I still miss Karen Carpenter. She was and still is the best sounding female vocalist on the face of the planet.
Legend ! Carole king and John are the greatest songwriters. Hands down.
Glad to finally hear the story about this particular song. Nice job. And I like how Karen arranged the story format. Totally agree with it.
its the greatest song ever written and ever sang. just saying
There is so much about the personal side of the Carpenters, especially Karen, that we do not know. We have her recordings and tv spots and concerts, but what was Karen really like in her down time? What did she do to unwind, who did she hang out with, date, truly care about, and who used/hurt her and vice versa? John, more than most, would know and could perspective on the books and writings about her. Richard will protect the image at all costs. I hope John has kept notes so as one day Karen's life will be set free. By the way, John is such a personality and a true pleasure to listen to, on top of being a superlative songwriter.
John must have melted when he first heard Karen sing the opening.
They should allowed Karen to continue to play the drums. What a bad, irreversible mistake they made. I still could see her from behind the drums. She was so happy when she was playing. So sad 😥
Karen played drums on "Yesterday Once More" and most of the "Now & Then" LP (all except for "Jambalaya").
Interesting to hear him talk about how the songs came about. Love the way he wrote the lyrics of my favorite Carpenters songs.
This was wonderful. I wish they hadn't cut off John's performance of the song - is this available in full anywhere?
Great interview! I wonder if John credits Richard for the start of his career! Remember that he got a name by writing Carpenter songs!
great work jb
Two words: Karen Carpenter.
AMEN!💙
Two more words...
SHE’s ALIVE!!
Four words: Karen AND Richard Carpenter
Great stories!
Awesome, met you in the '70s
great guy
So interesting!
Wowwwww!!!! tnx!!!!!!!!
We had such great music in the 50s, 60s and 70s. WTF happened???
interviewer interrupts too much with bad jokes
Yes - he’s irritating 😠
I feel like John Bettis always heaps tons of praise on Richard and himself and just kind of takes Karen’s talent for granted. He’s always been like that.
To them, Karen was just another one of Richard’s instruments.
Don't worry. 99% of the time, Karen is the one who gets the tons of praise. Let John and Richard get their 1%, even though they deserve more.
@@nealbraatz3911 Richard gets tons of praise, don’t worry. We’re all entitled to our opinion, so I’ll think whatever I want thanks.
@@artistbrindle Now matter how much praise Richard gets, Karen always gets 10x more. That's not an opinion...that's a fact. Look at the comments for ANY Carpenters song. Karen was awesome, no doubt about it. But so was Richard. While he and John were slaving over writing YOM, Karen was out shopping. Sounds like she was taking their talent for granted too.
@@nealbraatz3911 I lived during the time of the Carpenters as a kid, so I’m well-aware of how much attention Karen got. It wasn’t her fault that she was the star of the group. She never tried to steal the attention from him, she just had “it”.
If it hadn’t been for Karen there wouldn’t have been any record deal.
That’s a well-documented fact, not my opinion that I pulled out of my arse.
You’re particularly delusional in that Richard really couldn’t sing lead on anything because of his lisp. He tried, and the songs weren’t successful. Neither was his horrible solo album.
Not sure who you think would’ve sung for the group if it hadn’t been for her. Bye.
@@artistbrindle I was also a kid in the 70s, and in no way am I taking anything away from Karen. I'm as big a fan of hers as anyone. But when people, like yourself, diminish Richard's contributions, I take exception. Karen sang beautifully, but did she write or arrange any of the songs? Compose the lyrics? Choose the right material? Produce or engineer their recordings? Pick the studio musicians? Choreograph their live shows? Those were all Richard's responsibilities. I never suggested that Richard should have sung lead. Karen was the star, and her voice did secure their record contract. But Richard was the one who pounded the pavement and finally got the door opened, at A&M, for a contract to be offered. So they both contributed, equally, in their own ways, to the ultimate success of the Carpenters. Fact! See ya!
