We'd play the devotional services (I'm from the South), and we'd accompany any guest choir that didn't have a musician. I played organ and mom played piano. NO JOKE THIS HAPPENED! A guest choir came, and we accompanied. The choir was in D-flat and the soloist was in D the ENTIRE SONG!!! There was truly SPIRITUAL WARFARE going on! I was never so happy for a song to end in my life! 🎵🎵🎵

Oh dear! I'm rolling on the floor. Kent I tell you a real life story. We once rehearsed the popular Psalm 121(I will lift up my eyes to the hills). Everything was perfect by Saturday night. I had sleepless night trying to score the chords. We got to church Sunday morning, introduced the song and the soloist went straight ahead to sing Psalms 23. When asked what happened, she said the spirit led her to change the song right on stage. But the spirit didn't inform me (the Pianist) to rehearse it ahead. It was a disaster 🤣🤣🤣
My childhood director was a mix of the steadfast and come on up a little higher 😆😂😝🤣😃🙃 She KNEW her stuff and taught me the importance of practicing before practice. And yes, she would do both of these on Sunday if she heard something off 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I've experienced a variation on this where the pianist tries to get away with playing a song in an easier key...but the singer has perfect pitch. She blasted the band after the gig.
I don't know a thing about music but I enjoyed this so much. Sums up peoples' approach to life. Sometimes you just have to roll with it and try to play to what the soloist is giving you. Every now and then your efforts will turn into something miraculous.
I play in a band, and when the singer gets in wrong we just scream at him. And when he doesn't immediately realize the second vocal jumps in for the lead. And if everything else doesn't help it is guitarsolo time.
I played in a pit orchestra and the cast decided randomly that they wanted a song written in E to be in Bb. They piano player ripped them a new one verbally for that request.

As a clarinetist I once didn't swap from BB to A clarinet. So I had to transpose half tone for a whole movement, it was Tchaikovsky 4th symphony....
