Im an ear trained musician.., but I played for a pastor that had all kinds of degrees in music, classical, pipe organ etc.., for many years. No joke, this was a regular routine between us on Sundays, I can't believe I played for him so many years.., I know I'm going to Heaven for putting up with that every week!!! Lol.... The accuracy of this video gives me flashbacks and kind of traumatized me a little bit...

It's a absolute hot mess.. I know of plenty keyboardist and organist who refuse to learn every key. They have about 3 keys they play in and refuse to learn anything else. You dont know how frustrating it is to learn a song in one key but the musician is like I cant play in that orginal key so we have to shift the entire song. But the thing is you as the singer/choir/praise team aren't aware it until it's time for practice 😔😳

Okay. You're a good one Kevon. I got tired after the first chord change. I remember the time when my ex-husband was trying to correct my playing. I was so heated that I politely got off the organ and told HIM you come play it for yourself!!! Then I walked out of the church. Needless to say, he did hop on the organ to play it, but he quickly realized that I was right all along.

I'm so comforted knowing that others feel my pain.... The Pastor I played for for over a decade was obnoxious and rude with his antics all the time... Lol.. But he really was a master at the keys..
I’ve experienced something similar in the secular world doing covers gigs when the singer has perfect pitch. They will let you know if you’re missing a b13 on your dominant chord. It keeps us sharp but at what cost 😆 But after the initial panic, I have love for each of those moments.

I play and sing and I have to say...just go ahead and play it yourself bruh. Most of the times when this happens not only has there been no rehearsal, but you don't even know the soloist or their singing style! I mean do you run like a track star? Do you just stand there and flat foot sing(I'm from Ga.)like Mahalia? Do you employ vocal acrobatics like one of the Clark Sisters? These are just a few of the things one needs to know if you want them to accompany you successfully.

I feel for many guys who didn't really like the "preacher's" attitude. A member of the team with who you rehearsed may not be like this. But then I think his chords suggestions added more spice. That can really be a boost to his flow in delivering his words. Let's just be able to give the chords when the time calls for it.

I grew up in backwoods country churches. I can feel this so much...... there were some I accompanied that there wasn't even a key on the piano that they sang in.... that being said, they sang with all their heart mind and joy and despite it all pure worship even off key is still worship... Many of them have now gone on. i miss them. We had one sweet lady that we suspected she sang in the key of Z. Precious memories Back in the day it was the COG keys C D F G If you could do that you were good! lol

So true' so true ! just a few weeks ago a musician / preacher asked me to go to to F major and he started to sing and then told me i was to low for him ; granted' i knew immediately he was in Ab when he started singing...you are absolutely correct..
I applaud musicians who knows how to follow. Often they are taken for granted. Be kind to the person accompany you, they can mess you up!

Best church keyboard player I've ever seen was in a small rural town in Uganda. Random congregation members would just stand up and start singing, any random song in any random key. Then others would join in with harmonies, but wrong so it would turn into a different key so it'd be like 3 competing keys, and tempos for that matter. He managed to wrangle this so the whole congregation could join in, as well as work a little drum machine too to keep time. Absolute chaos that place lol.

I would have stop playing when he started calling out the cords, and motioned for him to come on over and play for himself. Every musician is different and have there on style. I sing and play but I only let people I know can follow me play for me. 🤣 Back in the 90s, Twinkie was singing and tearing the place up at a COGIC fathering in Bridgeport, CT. At some point while she was doing some runs, she shook her head at the organist in disapproval then proceeded to slowly walk over to him. The organist looked at her like "is everything ok? Whachu doin'?" She said in her kindly demanding voice, "move over baby...let me get on this." She sat down, changed some knobs, got her settings and played the chords she wanted to hear. The crowd got hype, the musicians encircled her with "oohs", "aaahs," and ugly faces and everyone showed her love. The organist was doing fine. Fun fact..that organist was a teenage Deon Kipping.

I was accompanying for Les Mis auditions all weekend and had some interesting ones … One singer skipped verses (2 pages ahead) then went back and did the missed verse … Another thought it was a good idea to turn 4/4 into 6/4 every few bars in parts of song normally sung in solid 4/4 time …
