Hi! I am so glad to hear you want to become a marine biologist - it’s such an awesome job and so important! I am sure you will enjoy all those books and learn loads. I’ve wanted to be a marine biologist since before I can remember, so I’m know if you set your mind too it you will become a marine biologist! If you ever have any questions, then just let me know. Good luck to you - and I hope those books help you find loads of awesome sealife!
Nice list Elizabeth! I like the sound of blowfish Oceanopedia, will be getting that for sure.
I can definitely recommend Humann and Loach Reef ID series
They have been the identification Bibles for my career. They have Pacific and Caribbean series covering corals, fish, and inverts
As for core learning, "Biology" by Brooker is a useful textbook which I always refer back to.
My favourite book is "Marine life a natural history of the coral triangle" by Goldman/Daniels. Its a good mix of identification, random facts and background information with fantastic pictures and style
Awesome Joel! Thanks for giving sharing your recommendations- I’ll defiantly look into those!
The blowfish encyclopedia is in reasons for a tenner
Hi Elizabeth, a really great channel that has diverse content that can be appreciated by all ages. I am not a marine biologist, but I am fascinated by the natural world, and living by the sea allows me to enjoy (when possible) rock pooling.
I would think that you probably have every book possible regarding marine biology, but additions that I have, and would recommend to anyone wanting to expand their collection are:
Fish & Fish - A student's guide to the seashore
Little - The Biology of Soft Shores and Estuaries
British Wildlife Collection Book 7 - Rocky Shores
Collins New Naturalist Library Book 94 - Seashore
Collins New Naturalist Library Book 131 - Shallow Seas
Seasearch - Seaweeds of Britain and Ireland
Seasearch - Sea Anemones and Corals of Britain and Ireland
Seasearch - Bryozoans and Hydroids of Britain and Ireland
Seasearch - Sea Squirts and Sponges of Britain and Ireland
After spending nearly 15 weeks in Isolated lockdown I can finally venture out onto the beach again ... hoooooray !
Keep on Vlogging ... you're doing a fab job !
Thank you so much for the recommendations! I would LOVE to get my hands on copies of Collins’s New Naturalist books! Can’t say how long I’ve spent staring at the beautiful collections in book shops - great to know they are good books. How exciting that you can go to the beach today - ENJOY ENJOY ENJOY!
Enjoying a look at the books!

Hi - Its an old collins addition of seashore guide, you can only really find it in second hand bookshops :D
Hi Elizabeth! My name's Louisa, I'm 17, and I'm really interested in marine biology. I've grown up in the Pacific northwest in the states and my dad lives in the San Juan Islands. A lot of my dad's friends are marine scientists and I've grown up listening to them tell me about their jobs and I've always been so interested in what they're doing. But I was wondering, how did you know that you for sure wanted to be a marine biologist? Because I've always been interested in marine biology, but I've also been interested in other things. I always come back to marine biology, but I'm still not 100% sure.
Hi Louisa! Thanks for commenting, glad to hear your considering becoming a marine biologist! I knew very young I wanted to be a marine biologist, a gut feeling I suppose, so I didn’t really have to consider it much.
However, I think marine biology has a lot for everyone. If you like outside you can work outside with endless possibilities. You can work in a lab if oh like that or just stick to modelling on a computer. You can work on a boat, on the coast anywhere in the world. It really is a career you can fit round to suit yourself! The only downside I suppose is that long term jobs are fewer than normal, usually jobs in marine biology work on shorter contracts so you have a job for 2 years then have to find another project to work on for two years etc. But this means you can travel! There are of course longer term jobs, just harder to find. So if that’s seems like something you like then go for it, unlike some other careers you really aren’t limited, as long as you study something in the sea you can find a job doing whatever you like! Hope that helped?! Just comment any follow up questions and I’ll try and help 😃😃😂
@@MarineMumbles This was actually really helpful! I've also always been drawn to marine bio. But I've also been interested in other things so I've been talking to marine biologists about how they knew they wanted to go into the field and it's been super helpful.
I'm actually reading a book its called Ocean its dk book it also has beautiful illustrations and a lot of information about the ocean. But I'm also looking forward reading one your recommendation ☺️
Oooh I’ll have to look that one up - thanks for the recommendations! I love some gorgeous ocean illustrations! Let me know what you think of some of the other books I mention if you read them?! 😃
Thank u so much 😀:-)
:D
I just subscribe to your channel and I love these books. Is there a book based on sharks
Thanks so much! Hmmm I haven’t actually read any shark specific books (why not I wonder, I’ll have too!!) but Emperors of the Deep always looks like a fab shark book
@@MarineMumbles thanks
If you could only choose one of them, which one would it be?
I have no idea why but right now I really want to be a marine biologist and everyone says you have to have a passion for it and I do but when I sit down and think about it I don't feel as exited but then I really like
it at times what should I do?
Hi! Thanks so much for reaching out, choosing which career path to follow is never an easy thing! Would it help if I made a video explaining all the different areas of marine biology that you can learn/work in (that I’ve come across at least)? That might give you a better idea of what to expect. There’s no right answer about what paths to follow, but your doing the right thing, reaching out to people, learning more about what a marine biologist is/does, and weighing up the pros and cons are all going to help you try find the right answer for you. Good luck, and if you have any more specific questions don’t hesitate to get back in touch - and keep an eye out for my video 😃
@@MarineMumbles thank you S Mu I feel a lot better and if you made a video about it I would definitely watch it
Great, I’ll defiantly film it! Good luck!
@@MarineMumbles thank you! 🤗
