  • Oli Sykes has had a long career with its ups and downs, but through that BMTH has made some of the most wide reaching music in their genre. While there are a few points of distortion in "Strangers" that I am not entirely comfortable with, the song itself is great start to finish. Come hang out while I react to and analyze Bring Me The Horizon "Strangers"!

    if you go onto their page there is a short of this and he is singing it really clear and to perfection, no music, just his voice, no wobbles in his voice at all., so they've added the distortion deliberate. that's the sound they were after. his voice is fully healed and working fine 😁

    I’d love to see you react to some songs or live performances where Oli uses his false chord screams. I don’t know what it is about them, but his false chords have always sounded raspier/more “brutal” than other vocalists who use that style, and I’d be interested if you’d have some insight on why that is or if it’s just standard stuff.

    • @twentyyears4788

      exactly, I’m a huge bmth fan and sure there’s plenty of other vocalists that can objectively scream better than Oli and are more consistent with it but the way he sounds is always the best. It’s always so brutal. His live screams can be fuckin killer

  • @levsco_

    The best way I can describe getting the scream sound oli has is just adjusting where your voice break is, if you rest the note directly on the voice break it just goes back and forth and sounds gnarly while you don't really feel anything physically

    • @JesusOfPaign
      @JesusOfPaign Рік тому

      Yeah, that’s the best way i’ve found as well. It’s a bit challenging for me to control my vocal break like that. Oli is so good at using that vocal break sound to add grit to his singing, such a cool sound.

    Hey Mark, just wanted to put this here in the hopes that you see it. Just finished Liminal Rite this morning, and it is something that everyone involved should be so very proud of. I've never heard anything so moving and ambitious from you guys before. Every aspect from the composition to the instrumentals works so well; I'd like to especially thank you yourself for going full psycho on the vocals, both sung and screamed. I can't think of a single vocalist in this wonderful genre who showcases their talent to more stunning and powerful effect.
    Vagabond's Lament is my favorite track, but everything else is just delightful.
    Kardashev is in my top 3 bands right now, and I just wanted to say thanks - to you and Nico and everyone else in the group - for approaching your music with a genuine, unique, and vulnerable care. Y'all are true artists, pure and simple. I can't wait to see what else you guys do. ❤️

    This song and BMTH's Drown are perfect for me to train and learn my voice. It's right on the edge of what I can comfortably reach pitch wise and for whatever reason I find his type of distortion pretty easy and comfortable to do as long as I don't go for a very high volume. I tend to have to sing this style at quite a low volume because I still have a lot of tongue placement / throat tension issues when pushing higher volumes. Something I gotta work on a lot.

    This song is just a masterpiece. I was one of the few hundreds hearing it the first time in a festival in Malta. We learned the chorus in about 3mins. Oli played this song on a turntable and was also singing with us. I'm so blessed I got to hear it on the 28th of May 2022. Also, Oli in a live setting is amazing. It was the best time of my life and I'm very glad that he found a healthy way to sing now, he's really good imo ^^

    fun fact, they even tried a bit a yodel sound for the Sigrid song they wrote, they tried many different sounds, didn't like any of them, so they have the sing to Sigrid, and she only agreed to take it if they performed it together. And it was a sweet song. ❤️

      I agree- the screaming he did when the band first started was with zero technical training or support, and while people now love to shit on him for not being death/metalcore heavy, back then he was inconsistent & lead to his vocal cord rupture. His current style is from actual training & support, he is consistent & able to maintain his sound quality through all the performances of tours, and because he now has a healthier technique, when he does perform the older songs (like when he did the deathcore melody and recently when they did a full throwback set in Malta) it sounds a bit different, but much healthier.

      The song is about the experience of sitting in group therapy and the video is meant to be a visual representation of the anguish and distortion of self that happens with mental disorders, and the ugly parts of self that people hide.
      The band released short videos before they dropped the full video of people expressing what living with a mental health disorder (specifically addiction, trauma, depression and anxiety) is like.

      naw- without the context from the videos of Oli telling the crowd in Malta about the song being about him starting individual and group therapy after a relapse during the pandemic, and then the “teasers” of the different stories, the video is really confusing as a backdrop to the song.
