The Javier Baez play will be relayed for years as smart base running when in fact it was a complete breakdown mentally on defense.

It was both: smart baserunning to make sure there was an opportunity, and the breakdown on the defense side who didn't realize the opportunity existed.

@@DanStaal It was not smart running. It was 100% dumb defense. Even after the runner crossed the plate if someone would have covered first base the inning would have been over, no run (there was 2 outs). Baez was lucky the pirates had a complete brain fart. When Baez started backpedaling first baseman should just turned around and touched the bag.

The smart part was attempting to confuse the defense by doing something completely unexpected. And somehow it worked. Somehow the Pirates were so amazed by what Baez did that they collectively forgot how to baseball.

@@jeffallen55 Don't care if he flapped his arms like a bird while rounding home heading to third. First baseman only had to turn around and Rick first. There is only dumb in this play and Cubs took advantage.

@@tj5912 I'll admit I had confused which play you were referring to.
In the one you're referring to, the smart baserunning was on the part of the runner who made it home.

Pirates owner: Harrison's base running is a great asset to this organization. Let's trade him.

The Pirates runner went way off the base path. How far off does a guy have to be to be called out?

IDK the exact rules but basically the "base path" is wherever the runner is at the time he is running toward a base. So as long as he isn't moving parallel at the time he is running toward the base he is within the base path. Probably terrible explanation but the short of it is he is safe according to the rules

I think this is a misconception about base path rules, the base path in this scenario is actually whichever path the runner is taking to the base at the time, to protect him from obstruction.
As opposed to base paths determined by the umpire (or the batters lane) when protecting fielders from interference.
Runners can run around and avoid fielders almost all they want I believe.

That's ridiculous to pirate guy was out of baseline

This year it seemed like a guy moved a foot and they were called out of the baseline. It's shit, no plays like this and a lot of them definetly looked like they took less than 3 feet then ump is like out. They need to be more lax with that call

When the first sixth of the video is a play you've already used 100 times that has nothing to do with baserunning, I know the other five-sixths of the video aren't worth watching.
