- On August 9, legendary hip-hop producer DJ Premier served as the guest of honor at Genius Level with Genius' Head of Artist Relations Rob Markman. During the in-depth discussion about his career, Premier recounted the time that he crafted The Notorious B.I.G.’s infamous diss track “Kick In The Door.” The song appeared on the late legend’s sophomore album 'Life After Death' which dropped just a few weeks after his untimely death on March 9, 1997.

Premier is the type of legend that can go out in Public and nobody would even notice he is the mastermind behind half of 90s New York rap.

Louis Pena: And that’s their loss.
You're absolutely right. Around 2014/2015 he was eating inside a Hooters restaurant here in Humble, Tx like a normal person with no fame. My friend recognized him bcuz he's a huge fan as I am too. He asked Preemo for a pic and Preem kindly said sure but outside tho for whatever reason. My friend got the pic and also told me that preem was in town for a good friends dads funeral and had been picked up from the Airport down the street in white plumbers work van...Talk about a humble guy 💯
"Kick in the door" is one of Bigs hardest songs and that's saying A LOT

The fact that he’s not from NY, but made some of the biggest 90s New York anthems commercial and underground is amazing
Yeah that’s mad I only recently found out he’s from Texas, always thought he was New York born and bred. It’s amazing how he embodied the style and sound
He moved to Brooklyn as a teen, so he was still raised here. What really tripped me out was finding out Guru was from Massachusetts!
Fuck I wish I was here for this event, Primo had a front row seat for EVERYTHING. Legend status for sure.
yeah you should go to his Wiki page for productions...will blow your mind...found a ton of songs that i had never heard before.
This really educated me about kick in the door because that song is in my top 3 best biggie songs OAT. I didn't know this was a diss-track to half of NYC Rappers.
Yup … he was putting everyone in line about who’s the King Of NY
@@eriklaguira💯
I had no idea either and biggie is one of my favorite rappers.
27 years old in 2024 and I’m just discovering it was a diss song. It’s one of my favorite Biggie songs ever as well
"Kick In The Door" contains a sample of the Screamin' Jay Hawkins composition "I Put a Spell on You."
So that's what that is.. Premo flipped that
I discovered it playing mafia 2💀 that song was in the game

"This goes out to those who choose to use disrespectful views for the King of NY"
Kick in the door is a Monster 🔥🔥🔥🔥
This whole DJ Premiere interview thing where he's looking back at his work that he did with rap legends looks like it could be something off of a rap culture TV show. I wish we still had TV shows that give hip-hop culture credit and showcased the new rap talent like what Yo! MTV Raps, Rap City, and old BET did. I would watch the shit out of a show like that.
Prolific Pops everything is gone online, this is the new generation where you can have more choice in what you watch ...
Prolific Pops FACTS!!
yea this old school stuff when they look back is always awesome to watch. all the little stories that we don't hear about.
+Franklin Freshman I'm part of the new generation and even I miss when television used to be good and entertaining. Now the only things I watch on TV are sports and Toonami on AdultSwim. Smh.
Don't understand why Jeru didn't get big. Come Clean was crazy and had rappers back in the day flipping out. There was an anecdote on an interview were Pun wanted to know who did the crazy track. He was big enough to have Biggie go on wax, there is a clip of him and Lauryn Hill getting in a debate on the street with Method Man in the background. Come Clean was only an "underground hit" and for some reason never got any real radio play or MTV. Most of my friends wouldn't even recognize his name.
I have Jeru's album and listened to it last week. Eternal 🔥
that 1 day song blackballed him, around 97/98 is when you notice a lot of rappers who wasnt wit the versace shit fall off
Come Clean was a classic. Listen to 99 percent
jeru's 1st album is classic. all song's beat and lyrics are great. my fav is mental stamina.
Come clean was in rotation on MTV YO! and BET but just never really got super big on the charts. D Original and Can’t Stop The Prophet were also in rotation. BIG, Craig Mack and Wu were ruling the airwaves by mid 94 though so that could’ve been one factor
DJ Premier should have a master class show
ONEDAY was the shit. and a reflection of the perspective that boom bap hip hop viewed the culture and where it was going.
I always thought that "son I'm surprised you run with them" line was to method man about ghost and rae, the more ya knoe
If I had closed my eyes, I would have thought it was Dennis Rodman talking
LOOOOOL
I am a huge fan of Premo literally named my dog after him and everything but I regret to inform you that smoking crack has ruined his voice
With songs like "kick in the door" and other classic material, it's hard to take some if today's music serious.
Nas knew kick in the door was a shot.If you knew Big was talking about you, Premo You no dam well Jeru was talking about Big!!!!

it's so crazy hearing how this track was a diss but back then as a ten year old I had no idea.
Jeru was CLEARLY talking about biggie... cut it out preemo lol

So biggie meant preemo with the line " son im surprised you run with them " ?
Yes.
@Official Replik no it was premo, “tryin to blow up like nitro n dynamite sticks” he said after. nas rae and ghost already blew, jeru was still underground not mainstream like them
I bump One Day every day! I'd never apologize for that record coz it's a classic!
I could hear Preem tell BIG stories all day long 🤩
When i first heard that verse in 1997-1998 always wondered if he was talking directly to Premo. Now I know!
I recall a concert I went to and Big, Jeru and Wu Tang well all to perform, amongst others. Big didn't show, I'm guessing this had something to do with it. Those were good times, good music as well.
What a show!
Method man said wu and Biggie did perform together that day you saw he didn’t show for some reason

What was his beef with rae and ghost? That part went right over my head and i still dont quiye kno how to decipher it.
Never mind...edit..lol its the throw bleach in ya eye line...i get the refeeence from the ice water track but why did that offened big?

Edit...3..answer my own question..aint no other kings in this rap thing they siblings....i get it lol it only took 25 years
Nas, Rae, and Ghost. Made many disrespectful gestures to Big on, Only Built for Cuban Linx. The beginning of Verbal Intercourse is one offense. Raekwon him self said, They were horrible to Big because they viewed him as competition at the time. Who was the most live, prolific and gangster M.C's. from that time in NYC. Jeru took on a more spiritual criticism of Big, And said Big was bringing the Hip-Hop culture down. And love all those people. They all made Hip-Hop better/
And by the lack of answers here it seems you’re not the only one that didn’t understand what else the fuck was being said💯👍🏾
james taylor when ghost and raw said niggas bit the bad album cover... on only built they was speaking on biggie and the ready to die cover
Wow...& Premier kept it even; letting BIG express himself.
that is my favorite song from him

I knew the end of that third verse was for ghost and ray
I stood behind him in a customs line en route to London, freaked out with joy, and he was super chill, but I think he actually was a little surprised and pleased to get recognized. Used to go to a bbq he used to throw in ft Greene park in the early 2000s to chill with him too, at a time when he was completely under appreciated. Tried to have him spin at my own party, but I was slightly too broke to afford the guy. Oh well.
