One of the first things I did while serving in the USFK was trade MREs with the ROK Marines. Their chow was insanely good and way different from what I'd had in China. Korea is a fundamentally different and important partner compared to China, and their food is absolutely delicious. It's definitely worth trying. One Korean male served in the Air Force. So I ate Korean MRE several times. Maybe that's why this video was so nice when it came out in my algorithm. What surprised me when I saw this video was that as soon as you saw the chocolate, you thought of melting it and sprinkling it on the cake. This is a common eating method among Korean soldiers. I know you put all the packages out there because this video has to show you each package for review. However, the best way to treat food is to leave pound cakes, chocolate, and paper bowls outside, leave the rest in the heating pack, pull the rope in the package, and seal it with only a small hole where steam comes out in the package. That's why the packaging bag has a zipper. Next, put all the food in a paper bowl, eat the food, and then eat the pound keak and chocolate separately. However, because pound cakes are too dry, most of them melt chocolate and sprinkle it on the cake.
Thank you for the insight regarding the Korean way y'all do your MREs. If I can get another one, I'll know a little better how to try a few things. TFW!
You're right about Korea. My maternal grandfather served in both Korea and Vietnam. In Korea, he suffered frost bite on his toes. Luckily it was able to be treated. Our troops weren't adequately prepared for the frigid conditions. Another great mre comparison!

Great video as always guys! Good to see you both again. I loved the voice of Me Ancient just after trying the cabbage dish, and after a couple of seconds, you could hear the effort of trying to talk over the pungent spices of the dish. I think I even saw your eyes watering up a little. Must have been really spicy! Looking forward to the next one, and also the remaining Chinese MRE's being reviewed. God bless!
I exactly ate that MRE 13 years ago in trench while our squad had shooting training. and I got thrilled what you were saying that you would prefer spread melted chocolate on the bread. All of soldiers who i saw eat this type of MRE follow the same way that you described !! I think soldiers think the same way haha. Thanks for rememorizing my young day SIR :)
Great review so interesting to watch! When we served in army so hated to eat this but now I miss those things! US mre so various and interesting! I have to try oneday. Especially that cigar lookt jerky and orange juice. Thanks for the video! P.s hope you to review the Korean army stew cause it will be interesting there’s a history between US and korean army!
Korean Here. Both my grandfather served in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Both passed away and they are buried in the Daejon National Cementary. When I did my mandatory service back in 2011, I got one for my mom's side grandfather and he was literally shocked at how MRE generally became so good. The first thing he said was that the hot mechanism was so thoughtful because of the cold Korean winter. Great video by the way and thanks for sharing.
15:30 Question about this, Point of view of Korea, We wish they put drink powder in Korean MRE Like US does. We usually carry beverage or water individually or they hand over bottle of water or beverage, instant cup noodle from truck. most popular beverage are gatorade or Pocari sweat"포카리스웨트" (really popular sports beverage in Korea and Japan.) And about coffee, we carry instant coffee pack. Most popular one is Maxim coffee mix(맥심커피). Has sugar and cream powder in it. Also someone doesn't like sugar or milk in their coffe, they choose KANU(카누) If you search it, you will get it. Well thanks for great video!! So much memory while I was in service. During Exercise in cold weather, I used heater as hand warmer or put it under bullet proof vest XD I remember I exchange MRE with US military during US-Korean co training exercise. About US MRE, we really impressed about accessories such as candy, hot sauce, napkin, drink powder and match. I really loved spicy cheese pack and I still remember chicken with noodle and Cuban style rice (I forgot the name, but I still remember US soldier explain to us it's Cuban style .)was really good. Especially spicy cheese pack, I wish I can buy that in Korea (or order it from amazon XD) Korean kids really love to put mozzarella or cheddar cheese on top of kimchi fried rice, so kids will love those kind of cheese spread.
Spent over a decade in Pohang and Okinawa. I miss the Asian cuisine, including their MREs. I remember switching my MREs with the ROK Marines during a joint exercise near Pohang. I hope my friends in SK and Japan are doing well. Thank you for this video. It takes me back…
Hi! I'm Korean and I also served in the ROKMC Korean MRE have instructions on the back. You can heat them without opening the box, and you should mix the kimchi and sausage with rice. when I was trained with the US Marines. I really miss mre we ate together!
I was very surprised to see how you eat the same way Korean soldiers eat MRE. Your knowledge of history is also very good. I think a person who never forgets about history deserves respect.
Twelve years ago, I served in the Korean Army for about two years. I had the experience of training with the US military back then, and it was amazing. They were very friendly, and we shared meals like grilled pork belly (samgyeopsal) and roast beef, even exchanging combat rations(MRE). It’s a memory that stays with me to this day. I hope the friendship between the US and Korean militaries remains eternal. And I want to express my gratitude to the veterans who brought us freedom during the Korean War.
Two good MREs in my opinion, and the Korean ones are actually not bad at all, I have had one before, but I think, like in the Japanese ones I had, you are meant to use the rice has a base to put your meat and sauces in, even the kimchi if you like it (I had it before and its not bad, but then again being half German, sauercraut has always been in my diet 😅). An excellent one Sir.
Kimchi is usually eaten cold cause they let it sit for about a month in the fridge before eating. My friends mom used to make homemade kimchi and she just put it cold on top of a hot spoonful of the main course
Kimchi is usually served as a banchan (side dish), so that's usually why it's served cold, but it can be eaten cold or hot depending on what main you're eating. Hot kimchi on a flat top with samgyeopsal (grilled pork belly) is absolutely 🔥
That awesome. My dad had special permission to go into the ROK mess hall in 1985 and try some south Korean meals out. He didn't care for the kimchi but did like the bulgogi with rice.
Here Korean. Thanks for the comment about kimchi. The difference between Chinese pao cai and kimchi is the fermentation process. Chinese pao cai uses salt and vinegar, but Korean adds protein amino acids such as shrimp paste to give kimchi its savory flavor. Some regions of Korea also ferment it with fish and shellfish. So Korean kimchi can be the base of Korean meat stew, or like the kimchi you just had, stir-fried with oil (with ground beef) and eaten with rice. Thanks for the great video.
You have to mix sausage, stir-fried kimchi, and fried rice all together to eat. Eating them separately is a matter of preference and a respectful way, but the best eating tip for that South Korean MRE is to mix all three well and eat them together. Also, Koreans eat rice and ban-chan(side dishes) together. (Actually, ban-chan and side dish are honestly a bit different concepts.) Rather than eating each food separately, they eat rice and ban-chan together. That is why the rice you ate felt bland. The seasoning was in the kimchi and sausage to eat with the bland rice.
Kimchi is the best! The rice is suppose to compliment the flavors of the side dishes/main course. You can mix it with the sides like you did to build different flavors. Korean food its all about flavors and spiciness like most culture. Get a little bit of this with one flavor, then get a little bit of that with the other. All in all great video!!
If I could make a recommendation, Try to find a brand called Jongga Kimchi from South Korea, it’s very nice cooked or even cold, kept in the fridge! It comes in a small plastic jar, and it’s not super spicy, it might be a bit more suited for your palette! It goes great with soups or just as a side dish!
The best way to eat ROK MRE is to heat fried rice, kimchi, sausage, cake, and chocolate balls with heating bags at once and mix fried rice, sausage, and kimchi. Then, the melted chocolate ball is sprinkled on the softened cake and eaten.
Great video. all army servicemans in ROKA says, menu tastes just about OK. but the problem is foundcake could smell bad when it's outdated. and the whole package does not include any napkins or toothpicks. which is important necessary. plus the heat pack is most useful part of this meal kit, as we all know winter in Korea can go down to -50c and those heat packs could save lives
Among Korean soldiers, they are not satisfied with that Korean bread stack either. As an author mentioned earlier, chocolate balls can be combined with the bread as sugar plating method. Thank you to share the MRE contents. :) And, thank you for the service. I could live in Korea thanks to your devotion. Your blood, sweat, and tears saved Koreans all.
It is my honor to review International MREs. My pleasure for my service. Thank you to all my fellow Marines in the past and other US service members who were there in the 50s for the Korean people. TFW
Thank you for your positive review. This is what I ate when I was serving in the ROK ARMY And the US Marine Corps is cool every time I see it. Semper Fi !
In 'Nam I ate C-rations but ended my career in Desert Storm and got introduced to MREs when they first started coming out. What was nice is that we supplied generator power in our unit so you could put your mre packet on a warm part of the engine and cook them to perfection. MREs have improved since then. I remember I reconstituted some strawberries with water and to this day they were the BEST tasting strawberries I have ever eaten. Yes that is true.
6:45 on a heating element packaging it says in red text, 'do not turn upside down or lay it down sideways, it will reduce the heating performance' and you flipped it. haha.
Hi thank you for making the video. When i was training in korean combat training center against american troops. I exchanged my korean mre with american mre. I really liked american mre. They were so friendly to give me their mre. I love usa ❤❤❤🦅🦅🦅🦅
I buy freshmade kimchi by the half gallon and sometimes gallon from my local Korean food store. I love kimchi cold and by itself or with hot foods. I don't usually heat up my kimchi. Your reaction after the spice hit cracked me up. 😂
I remember when I served my conscription back in 2011 to 13, I was stoked to try the korean mre since I already knew about the us one. pretty disappointed at our heater since it produced so much steam like a kettle that it might reveal our location during war. Since military business corruption is such a running joke in our country we wondered if it was a business decision over purchasing the license to use the patented us mre flameless heater. We were rationed the korean mre during a morning of a two week training and we wanted to try the dishes separately like you, but our squad leader was like " what are you guys doing, just dump it all in the rice and eat it quick" so we were forced to just chow down it all, still a great meal tho
You have to melt the chocolate and eat it with pound cake! You have to mix rice, sausage, kimchi and meatballs! I thought, but seeing that I was eating right made me feel at ease. It was fun because it reminded me of eating an MRE that was close to its expiration date. i love this video :)
you shouldve put the sausages in the heat pack too! they warm it up and pour it over the rice in the little paper container that comes with, and make a - over rice type of food.
These 2 meals looked great! This would have been a treat down range or in the field. The cobbler is always good, but I liked it room temp instead of heating it. Try it like that next time. God bless you brother and your family as well.
when I was in military, I usually put everything in the paper bowl and mixed them and ate it. I didn't like the pound cake so I gave it to others and only ate the chocolate ball. There is also another type of mre called 특전식(special force meal or something like that in english). That was really bad. Rock hard stuff that felt like breaking my teeth, bland rice cake which has literally no taste at all, etc.
Love your vids!!! You should do more fishing vids. I remember you did one with high adventure at snake river, you gave an educational experience. That’s what we need. Thank you and I hope you share more knowledge.
Kimchi has manufactured just right before Vietnam War. Because Korean troops needed kimchi canned. So we asked US government to teach us and supply us for canned kimchi. Thanks to American brothers.
As you can see from the old animated movie Ratatouille, Rémy first tries two different foods separately, then finally enjoys them together at the same time, savoring the harmony and flavor combination. Couldn’t this be similar to the idea of enjoying the fried rice in the middle along with kimchi, Vienna sausages, and I don't know what's it called but whatever look like a red kimchi-ed meat?
I always get a kick out of the gusto and enthusiasm you have for MRE’s! I remember that they were fun the first couple of times that I had them, and then the thrill was gone!
During Desert Storm, we had MREs 3 times a day for at least 6 weeks straight (maybe even longer as my memory fades me). I just remember how all of us always ate everything, even the sugar packets. Everything was so delicious because we were always hungry. The meatballs in BBQ sauce were always my favorite. I was a Combat Engineer and we always had details everyday where we put in a lot of work, and even though I was only 150 pounds, I felt like 3 MREs a day was not even enough for me. I felt bad for the bigger guys, they must have always been famished.
Well, clueless me. I left a long comment on your Russian MRE video; and I didn't realize you sample MREs from all over the world. Just discovered that. I love these and am glad to have found your channel. Always enjoy mre reviews and differing opinions on them.
Korea impressed me. Filling and tasty with enough meat to keep you going in the field. The only downside is spiciness, I don't like my food too spicy. I wish they had noodles and vedgies or rice with those meatballs in the US pack

anyway, this brings back so many memories. thank you for this amazing video!

How did this only make it into my feed until 17 hours after it was posted? This is my favorite damn channel!
I dig your videos and really enjoyed this. I love kimchee it is a dish best served room temperature as a side, with everything!
Thanks for the tips! TFW, Dennis.
Regular kimchi is typically served room temperature, absolutely.
However, this is stir fried kimchi and better served hot.
God bless!
More to come, Lord willing! TFW, as always.
One of my favorite ones you’ve done yet! I’m going to try to find a few Korean ones to try my self now after this!! Amazing video as always!
Haha, I enjoyed it. Korean winters are so brutal they must have needed that MRE heater.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the veteran soldier who reviewed Korea's combat rations.

Question about this,
Point of view of Korea, We wish they put drink powder in Korean MRE Like US does.
We usually carry beverage or water individually or they hand over bottle of water or beverage, instant cup noodle from truck.
most popular beverage are gatorade or Pocari sweat"포카리스웨트" (really popular sports beverage in Korea and Japan.)
And about coffee, we carry instant coffee pack. Most popular one is Maxim coffee mix(맥심커피). Has sugar and cream powder in it.
Also someone doesn't like sugar or milk in their coffe, they choose KANU(카누)
If you search it, you will get it.
Well thanks for great video!! So much memory while I was in service.
During Exercise in cold weather, I used heater as hand warmer or put it under bullet proof vest XD
I remember I exchange MRE with US military during US-Korean co training exercise.
You are amazing, I always love your videos, your voice, the birds and planes, or hotel backroad sounds! Love what you do sir thankyou for your service
It is my pleasure and my honor, Kate. As always, TFW!
Spent over a decade in Pohang and Okinawa. I miss the Asian cuisine, including their MREs. I remember switching my MREs with the ROK Marines during a joint exercise near Pohang. I hope my friends in SK and Japan are doing well. Thank you for this video. It takes me back…
Glad to take you back to a good place. TFW, as always.
I think you’ve inspired me to try kimchi, sounds delicious! Thanks for the content and positivity! 😊
and it is fermented so its super healthy
The last 24 hours have been crazy. Thank you for the upload. I needed to watch a fun and positive video.
Hi! I'm Korean and I also served in the ROKMC
Korean MRE have instructions on the back.
You can heat them without opening the box, and you should mix the kimchi and sausage with rice.
when I was trained with the US Marines. I really miss mre we ate together!
Very cool review!!! Throughly enjoyed it!!!
ROK and US mre's have improved alot. I had two tours in the 80's enjoyed both of them. Great memories 👌 Great video 😊
Love the videos! Keep them coming Me Ancient!
Will keep trying, Jay. TFW
TFW!
Korean MRE look so good these days! I did my military duty 20 years ago in Korea. At that time MRE was not that good. Thanks for interesting video ^^
Yut yut Devil! Really enjoy the trip down memory lane with the MRE's. Nicely done Sir.
Glad you enjoyed it and TFW!
These are very well done and annotated works! And thanks for your service!
Kimchi is usually eaten cold cause they let it sit for about a month in the fridge before eating. My friends mom used to make homemade kimchi and she just put it cold on top of a hot spoonful of the main course
Another commenter said his friend's mom made Kimchi in the bathtub! TFW
@@MeAncient bigger batches to last longer haha
I agree, kimchis a cold dish!! And delicious too, heating it might destroy some of the beneficial bacteria
Fried kimchi or grilled kimchi is lovely and is also a thing in Korea
Kimchi is usually served as a banchan (side dish), so that's usually why it's served cold, but it can be eaten cold or hot depending on what main you're eating. Hot kimchi on a flat top with samgyeopsal (grilled pork belly) is absolutely 🔥
That awesome. My dad had special permission to go into the ROK mess hall in 1985 and try some south Korean meals out. He didn't care for the kimchi but did like the bulgogi with rice.
Justin, I think I would have enjoyed everything at the ROK chow hall. I'd at least like to try. TFW
So torn haha I'm Korean American and tuned in on my lunch break and ironically having a meatball sub while watching. Interested to see your take.
It was a really good MRE, for sure. TFW
Love the storytelling.
Info about kimchi. Picking berries and cobbler. Good to see people enjoying picking berries.
Yikes!!! That's cold. TFW
TFW
Always good to see you Mr. Ancient and Ace
Great to have you on board! TFW
Thank you for your positive review. This is what I ate when I was serving in the ROK ARMY
And the US Marine Corps is cool every time I see it. Semper Fi !
Loved the video!! If you don’t mind me asking, when you were in the USMC, did you have the old steel helmets or the new Kevlar ones?
Kimchi is really good. You should be careful not to eat too much at one time. It is a side dish and is usually in small portioned.
TFW!
@@MeAncient Even if I poured hot water at minus 15 degrees Celsius, it froze in 5 minutes, so I chewed on the frozen rice
Thank you for serving though. 👍
I buy freshmade kimchi by the half gallon and sometimes gallon from my local Korean food store. I love kimchi cold and by itself or with hot foods. I don't usually heat up my kimchi. Your reaction after the spice hit cracked me up. 😂
27:45 thats basically the jist of Korean food. Everything is good by them selves yet everything goes well together.
I tried kimchi while in Korea. That was almost 40 yrs ago. Now I keep a jar in my fridge. Good stuff........in moderation....
Great video. Really no disappointment with either meal. Both seemed good.
You are right about that. TFW
Semper Fi, Me Ancient🙏
You had me at the choc chips in the “pound cake”. ✝️❤️
Great video! I think the Korean "meatloaf" was actually Bulgogi meatballs which is a fantastic classic Korean dish
That's interesting to consider. The 'meatloaf' was truly fantastic so they probably are Bulgogi meatballs. TFW
I am very happy you enjoyed the video. Yes, mixing everything is definitely the way to go. TFW
I was waiting for the bite of the Kim chi to hit you. I thought “any second now”.
🤣🤣🤣
It happened, for sure. Good stuff, that. TFW
you shouldve put the sausages in the heat pack too! they warm it up and pour it over the rice in the little paper container that comes with, and make a - over rice type of food.
These 2 meals looked great! This would have been a treat down range or in the field. The cobbler is always good, but I liked it room temp instead of heating it. Try it like that next time. God bless you brother and your family as well.
If I can remember, I will try it that way. TFW
when I was in military, I usually put everything in the paper bowl and mixed them and ate it. I didn't like the pound cake so I gave it to others and only ate the chocolate ball. There is also another type of mre called 특전식(special force meal or something like that in english). That was really bad. Rock hard stuff that felt like breaking my teeth, bland rice cake which has literally no taste at all, etc.
It is best to put it all in the paper bowl, but I wanted everyone to see all the individual items. TFW
Love your vids!!! You should do more fishing vids. I remember you did one with high adventure at snake river, you gave an educational experience. That’s what we need. Thank you and I hope you share more knowledge.
This video all explains why Koreans like Me Ancient. His explanation is very professional and deep.
“Pound cake and Kimchi.” My belly is percolating now!😊
Kimchi has manufactured just right before Vietnam War.
The ration would be completed if they provided a big piece of bread or rice
Well, clueless me. I left a long comment on your Russian MRE video; and I didn't realize you sample MREs from all over the world. Just discovered that. I love these and am glad to have found your channel. Always enjoy mre reviews and differing opinions on them.
Great review Shipmate!!! vr, Shannon

Korea impressed me. Filling and tasty with enough meat to keep you going in the field. The only downside is spiciness, I don't like my food too spicy. I wish they had noodles and vedgies or rice with those meatballs in the US pack
It really was a great meal. I really liked the USA meatball dish, too. TFW
