Back in the late 80s, my stepdad (army) worked at the depot/outpost (place where rations and uniforms were stored) doing inventory. He didn’t make much, career army but somehow never managed to advance much because he was a mouthy asshole. We were dirt poor, I mean starving at times kind of poor. One day he brought home cases and cases of these MREs that I think were set to expire. My sister and I were kids so it was like Christmas for us, we didn’t think twice and dug in. Once a day we’d pick an MRE and sit together on the floor and make it always eating the sweet treat first. It took us months to eat through the boxes we had, but they were filling and fun for us to make. I don’t think he was supposed to dispose of them by bringing them home but I’m glad he did. Now I know they’re probably not the most healthy meal but when you’re a starving kid, those MREs taste like lobster and caviar.
I used eat those MREs like crazy . I was born Ft Sill lawton Oklahoma. Father served continuously for 40 year US Army passed away. 6 years ago from Neoglastomo brain tumor from his service in Vietnam. Not once did he claim the military for it. 300 people showed up for his service wasn't advertised. Thank you for you're service!
Please dont ever stop making these videos, i watch these during my free time every day lol. Thank you so much for your service in the military and your service for providing me amazing content 😄
Man, some of the MREs from the early 2000's were like fine dining when you're really hungry. I personally loved the five cheese tortellini, the ham and shrimp jambalaya, and the red beans with rice. They do get old when you eat em all the time, but by that same token, if you were hungry enough, and were lucky enough to get one that you actually liked, it turned into a real treat. I fear I'd have starved on this one haha. I salute your bravery sir 😂
I fondly (yes sarcasm) remember the franks and beans MRE, and yes, had lots of dehydrated catsup. Like another commenter noted, pork patty was the absolute worst. Was in the first Gulf war and when we deployed to Saudi, lived off of MREs for two meals a day for the first month+. Chicken-al-a-king was the best one and the best condiment was the cheese spread. Unfortunately due to the heat (Saudi in August/September) they discovered that the cheese spread and anything else with dairy in it was spoiling, so we had to go through and get rid of it. Any way, thank you for these videos, brings back lots of memories, Semper Fi.
They still haven't come up with a substitute for the Cheese even to this day Stuff still turns brown and solid. At least the Peanut Butter was still good in the MRE's that I ate.
That's from the time I was in too. I remember when the MREs first came in, replacing the box of canned C-rats we used in the 70's. Peanut butter was my favorite, both in C-rats and MREs. The difference between the two was you always got OD green paint from the can lid in your C-rat peanut butter. That little p-38 that came with the rats was hard for me to use, so I got the larger P-51s from the PX that had a spoon on the back for leverage and to spread your peanut butter with. I still have one on my keychain today. I guess old habits are hard to break. Thank you for your service, sir.
First thank you for your service. And 2nd, thanks for the videos. Been binge watching all night 😂😂. Something oddly satisfying about your videos. Thanks again.
What a fantastic video. It's so refreshing to see things on UA-cam that's not hyper energy and loud. David, everything is just as it should be on this fine evening. I trust you are doing well. Happy to have finally been able to take the time to put another one together. TFW
If I remember correctly the frankfurters were marked “Not for pre flight use” As a communications guy we occasionally installed remote communications sites where we had time to get creative with MRE cooking. Basically cooking a stew in the canteen cup with your preferred MRE, and believe it or not the pork patty MRE was the best for this “stew” as it came with crackers AND cheese. I would get all of that going together in the canteen cup (with the hot sauce of course) and cook the “stew “ to the desired doneness. Admittedly it looked kind of gross, but it transformed what we all thought was the worst MRE, to the most desirable. The pork patty MRE was hands down the best if you happened to have the time and resources to cook it.
Wow, Great videos! Myself and family met you on Okaloosa pier back in September, you showed our 3 girls the sucker fish that swim on the sharks! You took the time to be informative and taught us something! We thank you and wish you good luck!
Sir, thank you for this video. My grandfather was a Vietnam veteran, and we would go to deer camp in the 80s, and he would bring along a variety of MRE's. We would comb through all of them for the best out of each pack. It was a wonderful time. I lost him earlier this year after a battle with different illnesses and a touch of alzheimer's. He was truly a fighter tougher than woodpecker lips. This video reminded me of him a lot. In his fatigues doing a taste test. Thank you again for triggering some great memories.
Really depends a lot on how the individual MRE is stored. If it was frozen at production and kept frozen, it could still be edible today. If it were freeze dried, i would try it at 42 years, especially if it was kept frozen. Freeze dried foods can last 25 years unrefridgerated. Frozen slows down even the very slow decay that can happen in shelf stable meals.
There are some MRE channels that try MREs from WWII. Or at least that time periods equivalent. Or at least, they try the bits that are still okay to eat.

Catsup vs Ketchup is almost entirely a regional/dialect thing. Catsup is a much older pronunciation with roots in british cooking and old america, specifically the south. Ketchup is a more modern evolution. Some people say that Catsup is more liquidy in consistency, but it's hard to tell how common that is.
Thanks for the content and the stories! If it were me and the chocolate wasn't the best id try it with the cocoa. If I could make it hot I'd think it'd make for a richer hot cocoa than just the powder mix. I would've just given people my beans haha. Take care and have fun
I learned the salt in bitter coffee trick from an old stoner lady that lived near me. I would often go over in the morning to chat and have some coffee, and one day it was particularly bitter. Put a few shakes in and it did improve. It doesnt ouright take away the bitterness, but it kinda tones it down
this is so cool to me i feel like a nerd🤣 i discovered what MREs were when i was 12, and i asked for international ones from france and russia for Christmas that year. im 20 now and still love watching☺️ i love watching you guys😭🥺 Happy thanksgiving to yall and stay safe 🤍
I took my buddy to the VA Clinic in Pensacola last week. Right next to it was NAS Corey Station. I told him about you going there in your early Marine career. I got very interested in the base so I studied it when I got home. AMAZING. I wanted to enlist that night! If I was a young man I would choose to enter the NAVY and go to one of the A schools at Corey Station!
It was a GREAT first duty station, for sure. I ended up breaking my wrist so I couldn't do the job I was training for. That extended my stay in Pensacola by about 3 months. Oh well........TFW
We transitioned from C rations to MRE's in 84 , while doing 40 days at the NTC at Ft. Erwin. The MRE's were a welcome change from the C Rats , but by the end of the 40 days, we wanted our C Rats back....
I was in the Army from 1993 until 2000. We had the brown bag MREs and then when I deployed to Bosnia in 1996 there were a couple Air Force forward observer guys on a cargo flight who had the brand new MREs in the tan bag and they gave me a couple of those.
I mustered out of the Navy in December of 1980 in Sicily, Did 11 months of inactive reserves for my 6 yrs. VP56 Sub Hunter. Never had MRE's till the 2000's. Hey. I was in Naval Air, what can I say. But I do have them now. Along with a lot of Sardine paks.
This is a very long shot in the dark, and maybe you've never heard of him- My dad absolutely looked up to a man back in his service days, he was Navy, went by a moniker of Silver Fox/ Grey Fox (I'm inclined to say it was Silver though)- DD974, Comte De Grasse- He was definitely a higher rank, but I don't know personally what that was- There's footage of the Comte De Grasse here on youtube, and you can actually see him there during an interview (where one of the newbies was seen doing the ultra important job of"catching the mail", lol. If you, or anybody who sees this comment may have a lead on Silver Fox was, or knew him, please give a shout. And @Me Ancient, you're precisely the kind of guy I wish my pops could make friends with.
Iodized and Ionized sound similar but are not Lmfao. 🤣 I love this Channel. It's like watching that mean looking Drill Seargeant when his Family comes to visit.
When I was a kid in Boy Scouts, we loved getring these for weekend hikes, they packed very well. Throw a few MREs in your hiking bag and you're good to go. And none of the kids wanted franks either, because of the weird preservative gel between the dogs was weird.

Happy belated Veterans Day me ancient and thank you for your videos as well. I hope to see a ace or Micah collab video in the near future as those are always the best besides watching you try quite literally ancient MREs
I used to like them. I remember when they came out. They were just the same type you get from canned ones in a dollar store, with the same taste. The only three MREs I did not like were mixed in different eras: the mid-90s brown pack with Omelette with Ham and two tan packs circa the Iraqi Freedom era, the Country Captain Chicken, and the Black Bean and Rice burrito.
I'll be honest as well....I thought that I was the first one to come up with the idea of trying MREs on UA-cam. I had to start getting comments about Steve before I realized I wasn't the first. All that to say, I haven't watched his videos as I want my reviews to be my own ideas and thoughts about the MRE. I won't eat something that I honestly believe will make me sick. Good luck to anyone who will eat one that's 'bad.' I'll live to eat another day........ TFW!

In the first ever TV thing Gordon Ramsay did (The first episode of the UK Kitchen Nightmares), he was fed a rancid scallop by the head chef of the restaurant he was helping and had to induce vomiting once he got a hit of the aftertaste. Said Head Chef and his Sous Chef both ate the same scallop and didn't vomit it out, and apparently later had to get their stomachs pumped. If Gordon's anecdotes are accurate, in the production of the next four episodes of the series he got food poisoning without fail at each subsequent restaurant. By the time of the fifth episode he developed a habit of never swallowing unless it tasted awesome to him, leading to the meme that he spits out food liberally. He doesn't regret this, as even though as a chef he shouldn't be wasting food, he points out that the rancid scallop could have killed him right then and there, and the quality of the "Head Chefs" of his rescue shows have only gone downhill since then. It may be good that in the future you have a "no swallow" policy for any MRE that might be older than 5 years, just as a safety precaution.
There's just something about MRE reviews that I like. I have seen several of your vids as well as Steve1989. Have you seen his videos? Steve has eaten insanely old food. It's crazy that he has had literally every war in his mouth from an 1863 hardtack cracker, to meat from the Boer War in the 1890's, to pre WW1 rations, WW2 rations, the Korean War, Vietnam & everything else in between, old & new & from several different countries. It would be cool if both of you could get together & do a review. He's from Florida. Thanks for your service & may God bless.

I had no idea one of these things could keep for over four decades.
Me Ancient, the “Spit It Out When You’re In Doubt” method is excellent to live by.
"They smell strangely... ODD" sums up the experience.
It doesnt ouright take away the bitterness, but it kinda tones it down
Love that he’s not has these meals for decades and he still hopes they’re better than they are 😅
Brave man for trying such an old meal
this is so cool to me i feel like a nerd🤣 i discovered what MREs were when i was 12, and i asked for international ones from france and russia for Christmas that year. im 20 now and still love watching☺️ i love watching you guys😭🥺 Happy thanksgiving to yall and stay safe 🤍
Are you kidding me? If I could have gotten hold of one when I was a kid, I'd have paid big money for one. TFW!
I laughed so many times during this video...well done
Bro, I can't believe you tried the hotdog 💀
90% chance of botulism and I can't believed you gambled on that one
I spit it out.....I'm alright, BTW. TFW
I'm so glad you're cautious with this. If they made your bowels go back then I can only imagine what they'd do to you 42 years later!
Perfect, been watching Vietnam documentaries all day, need something to watch while I eat my soup :)
I hope you enjoyed the show! TFW
Salt is alkaline it levels out the acidity kinda like making your coffee with spring or well water which is usually naturally alkaline, or dipping an egg shell in your coffee. Thank you for your service and god bless 🫡
You're welcome and thank you for your kind words and ideas. TFW, Hoss.
The cursed ration , they disintegrate if you look at them funny
Sour milk carmels sounds like Buttermilk Carmels. I bet you some grandpas in Minnesota would prefer such a exotic flavor 😂
You know, that's true. I like butter milk. Maybe I should just chew one up and see. Good idea. TFW
Man I feel like i have been waiting for an ancient for Me Ancient to upload a new vid lol. I’m glad to see a new vid!! I’ve missed you!
Shouldn't have to wait so long for the next one. Stay tuned, my friend. TFW
yeah I can't imagine a hard day on the field and having to rip out some basically vienna sausages for lunch served with jam and mushy beans lol. happy holidays brother.
You hit the nail on the head, exactly. The beans in the newer MREs are better, for sure. TFW, Eddy.
Happy belated Veterans Day me ancient and thank you for your videos as well. I hope to see a ace or Micah collab video in the near future as those are always the best besides watching you try quite literally ancient MREs
That would be fun to do, for sure, Corey. TFW, as always.
"gastrocolic reflex"
is the nicest way I have every heard someone say..
"Emergency levels of trying not to shit yourself"
Thank you for your service, Sir.
Jonathan, you are welcome and it was my pleasure (although at the time it wasn't always a pleasure). TFW
My brother happy holidays to you and your family
Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas to you!
“Your violent food poisoning is NOT service related”
I used to like them. I remember when they came out. They were just the same type you get from canned ones in a dollar store, with the same taste. The only three MREs I did not like were mixed in different eras: the mid-90s brown pack with Omelette with Ham and two tan packs circa the Iraqi Freedom era, the Country Captain Chicken, and the Black Bean and Rice burrito.
Thank you for your service,sir.🇺🇸
That gastronomic effect couldn’t have been any better after all those years 😂
It wasn't. NO improvement. TFW
Them hotdogs are notorious. Hunger makes the best seasoning but I’m not sure how hungry I would have to be to enjoy that.
Dehydrated Pork and Beef patties had only one competitor for "worst MRE" and this was it.
ill be honest here, Steve would have already eaten half of this meal and commented on various taste and flavor and thats HALF the fun with these !!
TFW!
Guga reviewed the meals Solders ate over the past 100 years. This mre was one of them. A couple weeks back Readiness Rations did a review of this menu as well. Great video today.
I appreciate your kind words. TFW
Love seeing you pray before your meal and not cutting it out. Its nice to see people not afraid to show their faith
He wasn't ashamed of me when He died for my sins. TFW, Ben.
You two have completely changed my perspective on praying publicly. God bless you! 😊
I kept thinking 'eat it! Who cares if it's bad, eat it!!' 😆
I just love this channel :)
You are very kind. TFW
Wow pops will try anything !! Impressive!! Great video Me Ancient love it !
Not quite 'anything,' Travis. TFW
Happy belated Veterans Day thank you sir for serving our country and I wanted to let you know your vids keep me going I own a canteen cup dated 1917 wwi
That is an awesome canteen cup! You should share a picture of it if you can. TFW, Matt.
Wooot you're back! And thank. You for your service and happy veterans day! (Late)
Thank you for your well wishes.
In during the 90 s ya worst MRE by far trained with the marine engineers for 10 weeks in AIT mad respect for you guys semper Fi! Happy veteran s day brother!
Semper Fi, Tim! And Happy Vet's day to you as well. TFW
@MeAncient glad to hear ur alright been following couple yrs u hadn't posted for a while! God bless you and your family!
I've had a few bad scallops in my day as well. They're MEAN! TFW
Nick, welcome aboard and I'm happy to hear you are enjoying my content and perspective. TFW
Hope me ancient is feeling okay looking tired, ace must be having you on the boat haha! Happy veterans day!
Feeling peachy! TFW and tks for the well wishes.
I was in the Marines from 1976 to 1981. So glad we dodged these, but unfortunately we did still have plenty of ham and lima beans rations...
How does Uncle Nathaniel say, OH MY STOMACH IS BUBBLING! LOL
Bubbling, indeed! TFW
