Living With a New 2019 Mazda3 Hatch | The Good AND Bad

  • After spending a whole week daily driving the redesigned 2019 Mazda3 Hatch I've got 5 likes and 5 dislikes to share. As a whole this new Mazda3 Hatchback is quite impressive for this class and truly feels much more premium than the price would suggest. However, considering the class it belongs to...it may have focused too much on some things and too little on others. It seems to be more of a small niche car instead of a mass market compact car. Either way it was very nice and there's no doubt this 2019 Mazda3 raises the bar for other cars!

I've owned the new Mazda 3 AWD and I took it on a trip to Knoxville and was getting 37mpg to 40mpg via the ontrip computer. My AC cools great and I have had no issues. I've owned mine for just over 2 months.

The lesson I learned from living for years in Austin. Go into your air conditioned home in early June and don't come out until late October. I learned a similar lesson living in Ithaca, New York. Except in Ithaca you barricaded yourself in late November and came out in May.

I have experienced this in my 2013 Mazda 6 2.5 L engine. The car at low speeds in gears 1 and 2 downshifts violently and then accelerates briskly. Tbh I like that it does that and makes it feel much more powerful than it actually is.

People asking for the transmission. From what I've seen/read. The torque converter has a locking ratio/clutch. Mazda designed it to lock as soon as possible which means more power to the wheels and less loss on rotation (look up torque converter if you don't know how they work). This helps fuel economy, and power from the engine.
That's what the jerking is. I've only ever felt it in a standard transmissions.

I have been following your channel for a while now and i just pulled this video up as i was looking around at some relatively new, used vehicles. Living in Georgia a working powerful AC is a must have.. especially since i am a northerner. All of your negatives were legitimate and this is the first i have heard about the AC issue. I think i will be dropping this one from my list due to your video, thank you for the honest review.

I would look on some Forums to see if it’s a common issue or not or if you’re looking during the summertime maybe see if they’ll let you take it out for several hours. Thanks again for watching!

Here in Australia we get choice of manual or auto in all Mazda 3 levels of sedan and hatchback, we also get rear ac vents as standard. Not sure why Mazda restricts options in the US as it is a much larger market. However, we only have the FWD option with either a 2.0l or 2.5l engine and will also have the new Skyactive X engine option available later this year.

The US market 3 differs from the Canadian market 3. Cloth IS standard on the base 3 hatch, leatherette is an upgrade. then premium leather is an upgrade on top of that, but only if you move to the GT trim.

Good review. As an owner of a 2014 hatchback with a manual, I really liked the new 2019 with a manual when I drove it back in June. But I was quite disappointed with the handling. While you don't notice the cheaper torsion beam rear suspension when it comes to the ride quality, you definitely feel it in the handling department. I noticed heavier steering versus my car, but the steering was slower to respond and I think they took away G-Vectoring for the redesign. I drove a 2019 CX5 around the same time with G-Vectoring and it handled even better than my car despite the higher ride height and heavier weight. Hopefully Mazda will correct the steering on this car for their own sake sooner rather than later. Once they do, I would gladly upgrade to the new Skyactiv X with a 6 speed manual.

In the U.S. at least, Mazda limits the customization by making options available through a few group packages only. The exception being dealer installable ones like auto dimming mirror + Homelink, and navigation. The latter is enabled via an SD card. Perhaps that strategy makes production more efficient.
The new 3 is a great car. It would be that much better if some options available elsewhere could be had stateside. On the top of my list would be filling the two blank buttons left of the steering wheel with parking sensors and front/360° camera. Those are available in other countries. But these are minor gripes in a car very well equiped to compete well above it's class and in a market no longer very interested in non-SUV's.

And personally I feel like navigation is almost pointless now. i remember really really wanting navi when I got my first car and now its just way more convenient to just use your phone. Usually automakers don't understand the importance of a faster interface so they cycle the same system for a bunch of years dating themselves.

The jerkiness could be because of the transmission having a torque converter AND a single clutch. I haven't had ANY hesitation in mine(16,350km in), but get the jerkiness sometimes. as for the ac, my backseat passengers have never complained.

This sounds very needy but If they offered this as a hatchback, awd, manual transmission and with a turbocharger I would 100% get this cause I’m in love with the look of the car. Like I want the manual but I also want the awd and it’s stupid how you can’t have both. Hopefully in the future they do this.

    • @alcovitch
      @alcovitch Рік тому

It's only stupid if you know nothing of the design and cost. They don't have a manual transmission that can handle the turbo. That's R&D money for a transmission that hardly anyone buys anymore. They also have to completely redesign the car so that the manual functions properly with the power band of the engine. The automatic shifts early, this doesn't work when the user is in control of the shifts.
Basically it's just not worth the cost for less than like 9% of all cars on the road. At least in Canada.

I picked up my 2019 Premium hatch last month and have experienced the low rpm jerkiness between 1000-2000 RPM, very annoying in stop and go city traffic. Taking mine to the dealer this week to have it checked out. I was definitely disappointed that this is a common issue given Mazda’s fairly good reliability reputation. I've had nothing but issues with my 2019 Mazda 3 Hatchback. The Kingston Mazda dealership was unable to fix my heat for over a year. It was in the shop several times. Try defrosting you car in -30 weather without working heat. Air conditioning was acting up as well. My driver side door was catching on the rear door actually causing me to be stuck in my car unable to get out some days. The trunk wouldn't shut sometimes. The back up camera worked intermittently. The automatic breaking feature would just go off when I was going around a bend in a road and a car was coming the opposite way. That gave me a fricken heart attach I tell you. My stereo would randomly turn off while I was driving where I'd have to pull over and turn my car on and off to get the stereo to turn back on. Seat belt beep would go off telling me to put my seat belt on when my seat belt was on lol. This only happened for a couple days then never again. Everything happened intermittently and even with video evidence of these issues Mazda still wanted to charge me to inspect the car. After all these issue plus more within the first few months of buying the car, Mazda still refused to swop me out into a demo which made me wonder if all the cars had this many issues as well that's why they didn't feel that would solve my issues. My car has been in the shop so many times I was relieved to move within walking distance of the dealership because they also do not give you a loaner car when your brand new car is in the shop constantly. I will NEVER, I mean never buy another Mazda no matter what the price is. The shitty part is I leased it for four years and they only have warranty for three and refuse to let me out of my lease without paying 5k.

For what it's worth, I've also experienced transmission hesitation in my 2019 CX-5 which uses the same Skyactiv-Drive 6 gear transmission. Specifically the 1-2 transition is sometimes clumsy, also there is lurching at 5 MPH in 1st AND at 10 MPH in 2nd. That's all unfortunate because I spend most of my time in those gears at those speeds in NYC traffic. When it comes to the transmission, it is so lovely for highway cruising but seems unsuited for city driving, or for areas with lots of stop-and-go traffic.

The blind spot measures distance and speed of the other vehicles. If you are not going to hit them and going faster than said vehicle it won't trip. If they are going the same speed or faster than you it will trip. It's not really a flaw or accuracy thing. Its more of letting you know "you could hit this" at your current state of flow and beware of lane change.
