  • I was thinking about naming him Theodore but unfortunately, he passed before I could even think much about it. So RIP Theodore, I wish I could have gotten there sooner, I will take good care of your friends and make them healthy strong goldfish. Thank you so much for watching and don't forget to check out the merch: beacons.ai/lukesgoldies

Poor mushroom cap, thank you very much Luke for trying to save him. I’m sure he his last moments were filled with happiness knowing he was going to a home that was going to try and help him. Unfortunately sometimes they’re just too far gone. I experienced that with my first time rescuing a better from a pet store it was awful. He had severe swim bladder issues too, and he only made it a couple of months after I rescued him. I’m so sorry that happened though. I know how much it sucks to have them pass away right during the acclamation process. It’s very discouraging, but you have all of those other guys that you were getting a new life too and helping some of those feeder goldfish would be food for turtles are other fish by now, but you’re giving them a new life which is amazing. I hope the little guy with ammonia runs does good breaks my heart.

Sometimes petshops have these exquisite fish that people surrender for some quick cash, when I had goldfish I actually "rescued" a couple of fish in this situation too (albeit not this severe). I used to visit every shop in my area on a monthly basis just for this, because otherwise some stunning animals would have had this fate sooner or later.
Permits for selling live animals should be way more strict... Only reputed breeders/shops that actually provide conditions for their animals and educate possible buyers should be able to sell animals.
Also, like some people have already said, you could branch into goldfish rehab videos, watching goldfish thrive in your care is phenomenal and heartwarming to see.

I was at a pet store 4 or 5 months ago and this oranda was absolutely covered with ich amongest other problems.. he literally looked lifeless in the tank and the store owners even said “we’re gonna trash those, we just haven’t got them out yet”.. so I was like, well, if your just gonna throw them away, can I take this guy home and see if I can help restore him.. he was like “ill let you buy him for half price”.. even tho they had just told me they were going in the garbage… lol. Anyway.. I bought the dude, treated him and he’s still going strong today.. in fact, he’s the most feisty fancy I own.

Luke just a bit of advice, the osmotic shock of being put into completely different aquarium water was probably too much for the mushroom fish in his condition, which is why he conked out as soon as you put him from the bag into the tank. With sick fish it's best to drip acclimate, not just temperature acclimate. Healthy fish deal better with being plonked into different water quality, even though that's not ideal.

I know you probably know this, but you didn't fail whatsoever with him... the poor guy was just too far gone. Thank you for caring for these sweet babies and doing the absolute best you can. Fingers crossed for the other fish here! Rescue and rehabilitation is such a painful process, sometimes, for both you and the fish. I've done lots of betta fish rescues through the years and what counts is that you're trying and you're qualified to do so. They have the best possible chance with you over virtually anyone else. Once again, thank you.
PS. I didn't see any mention of whether or not you purchased the fish for full price, though I may have missed it. If you haven't done so already and decide to do this again, I would highly recommend asking for a heavy discount on any non-feeder fish species. Point out every problem they have and try to get the price as low as possible. There's a balance with being firm and polite with employees - as of course it's rarely ever their fault - but animals and their well-being is the one place where putting up a decent stink in a retail store feels justified. Many stores will sell a fish at a significantly discounted price over making no money at all thanks to a fish's death.

I have 19 fancies at the moment. Two are successful rehabs. One has 1 eye and gill curl. The other I got very emaciated and diseased when he was tiny - one more night in a pet store and he wouldn't have made it. A few months in a hospital tank and lots of treatments and he pulled through and is one of my happiest goldies. I also have two with chronic swim bladder issues in a separate low flow tank. One can't stay upright for long and scoots around on her side. She gets therapy twice a day to increase muscle strength. The other has inflated anterior s.b. like Mushroom. He gets massage twice a day and that relieves it a bit. I've also had some non successful rehabs - sometimes they're just too sick to pull through.

*So the best thing to do for fishes like the big goldfish with swim-bladder is to not acclimatise them to new temperatures or introducing them to QT tank. You can add the airstone to the bag directly and add in some salt with methlyn blue. This cause less stress due to temp fluctuation and might just save them. Once slightly stable 3/4 hours later you can start adding water from the tank to the bag one cup at a time. This one was far too gone though.*

When I worked at a pet store, I was basically in charge of fish for several years. I did all I could to keep more fish alive, but when all the systems are linked and you only have so much time to dedicate to the fish, you can feel pretty powerless.
If we had a fish that wasn't gonna make it if it stayed with us, I'd just write it off as dead and give it away. We just didn't have the resources, only 1 quarantine tank (that i bought) and 2 separate feature-only tanks with very specific parameters. Nothing feels worse than knowing how to save a fish, but not having the ability to. Our city's water quality would change drastically season-to-season, and it was a full-time job just trying to keep the water at a normal kH level.

One of the worst local pet stores had huge common goldfish , they had huge cuts , one had a missing gill cover and all were gasping for air at the top, I doubt any that stayed there survived . Sadly I don’t have goldfish and couldn’t do anything. There was a pet store near with a huge tank for goldfish that could have been given them but sadly the worst one got them ( all their fish are disease ridden and skinny )

Kind of looks like the big guy was breathing heavy and just ran through the oxygen that was available in the bag. It was a big fish and they suck up that oxygen fast. Had a couple close calls with some Koi myself.

Even though this was a fail, this whole video is perfect for demonstrating how messy the aquarium trade can be. It would be amazing to be able to revive these guys, then find them good homes if you don't wanna keep them forever (I've seen people revive fish when they had almost no experience in them, just to find them a better home). I don't understand why most aquarium pet stores don't let people take home obvious sick fish for free, the employees are going to let them die and throw them out anyway, which means they are not getting money. Thank you for trying your best for these guys. ❤🐟

Rip poor little nugget, he probably didn't have the best fish life but in his final moments he was given a chance for something better from a good man. He wasn't alone, he was saved, and finally given care, may he be put to rest in a painless after life... 🕊️

I always like seeing videos like this where humans go out of their way to help animals. Even though it isn’t always a success, it’s the fact that you tried that counts here because that’s the first step into helping. Also is no one gonna talk about how he has the mic clipped to his beard? 😭

Luke With those feeder goldfish you’ll eventually need a pond Of at least 250 gallons because those feeder goldfish grow very big. A lot of people say 12 inches but that’s only in aquariums. In ponds they can get to 18-24”. Good luck with your goldfish
