  • From studio gopher to global superstar, Jon Bon Jovi spent years chasing his big break. Working the club circuit as an underage teenager, Jon was shocked one night when his musical idol Bruce Springsteen jumped on stage and started duetting with him! Actually, he was singing The Boss's song at the time. Pretty cool. Later when Bon Jovi finally got a demo for his song Runaway recorded, he was rejected by every record label in the biz. And he thought that maybe it was time to call it quits. But in a last-ditch effort, he decided to sneak into a New York radio station and pitch Runaway straight to the DJ… The DJ ended up playing it and virtually overnight the song was a hit and set this singer up for a record label and a major tour… the only problem was Jon didn’t even have a band! Up next, the story of Jon Bon Jovi’s tenacity, and how he formed a band after Runaway hit it big and transformed a would-be pop idol into a hard rock icon NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

I’m excited to return to another one of my favorite shows that we do on this channel. It’s called Breakthrough. In this show, we break down songs, albums, or events that kicked open the door to an artist or band’s career and gave them the momentum to rocket to long-term success. I gotta tell you, I’ve been watching the Bon Jovi Documentary on HULU and I’m Blown away at Jon Bon Jovi’s drive and tenacity… He really deserves all of his success. But it’s interesting because Jon almost went a totally different route… as a rookie he was startling the fence between pop and rock… Today we tell the story of what took him from a would-be pop idol to a hard rock icon, with the story of their 1984 debut, Runaway.
So Bon Jovi was formed in 1983 in New Jersey, but our story actually begins before that… back when lead singer Jon Bon Jovi was still known by his given name John with an “H” Bongiovi. Jon started getting into music big-time while he was a teenager, attending Sayreville High School in New Jersey. There he joined nine other musicians to form a Rhythm and Blues cover band called Atlantic City Expressway… Among others, the ten-piece covered songs from New Jersey natives Bruce Springsteen and Southside Johnny… played at clubs along the Jersey Shore, and this even though they were underage.
Actually, in 1979 Jon and the band were even joined onstage by Bruce Springsteen himself while singing the Boss’s song Promised Land… One minute Jon was up there performing and the next he looked over, and there he was - Bruce Springsteen - on stage singing along. Going back to high school the next day, Jon was walking on air. The impossible felt possible. And he realized that nothing mattered but the music. Forget math class. Forget all the high school drama.

I was not in the least bit a bon Jovi fan.. But I do give the man much respect because he opened I believe 3 soup kitchens in the Manhattan and Jersey area. During COVID he had a hard time getting help so he would go to these soup kitchens and help out by washing dishes and prepping food. Working 12 hour days even. Much props to Jon! That's a very beautiful thing you did for the homeless and poor.

It was 2003 Bon Jovi along with the Goo Goo Dolls were getting ready to perform at the old Arco Arena in Sacramento and I was working for a foster care agency at the time working In Kind Donations. Around 3pm I received a phone call from the Sacramento Kings / Arena Donation Department offering me plus 10 kids tickets to that show that night. I couldn't refused the tickets despite the one stipulation I had to bring 9 kids and 1 other foster parent. It was one hour before showtime and I got the tickets to make a long story short. Bon Jovi put on a great show and I have always been a fan since the 80s. Bon Jovi and Jon will always hold a special place in my heart

I knew as soon as I saw the thumbnail this was gonna be about Runaway. Saw Bon Jovi open for the Scorpions at Madison Square Garden right when this song became a hit. As a singer I also experienced something similar to Bon Jovi in the same era. It was 1987 and I was fronting a band of my own in NYC. And not to toot my own horn, but at the time I was a very similar looking guy to Bon Jovi. Good looking, long blonde curly hair, green eyes, cowboy boots, the whole look. Anyway, we played a showcase type show at CBGBS. After the show one of the A&R guys came to talk to me. He said he liked the band alright but was more interested in me as an individual. And was interested in signing ME to a deal. I immediately turned him down and said I was all in with the band. It was us or nothing. Well, nothing happened. That was it. Five years later the band was over and here I am typing this in 2024. The road less traveled huh?

That doesn't mean Jon Bon Jovi should just keep touring forever. No one has a God given right to perform as long as they want to.
Shit happens and it's unfortunate but maybe it's time to hang it up. She's not a rocker but when Julie Andrews lost her voice, she stopped singing and pursued acting only and had to give up musical roles, she would have been perfect for.

Love Bon Jovi. My 2 favorite glam metal bands of the 80's are Bon Jovi and Def Leppard. "Runaway" is one of Bon Jovi's best songs. This was their first hit before their blockbuster Slippery When Wet album gave them their massive success so many people who are not die-hard fans may not be familiar with the song. I'm glad you're covering it. I'm from New Jersey and these are my home state's definitive music artists by decade: Frank Sinatra in the 40's and 50's, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons in the 60's, Bruce Springsteen in the 70's and Bon Jovi in the 80's. I finally got to see them perform live back in the late 1990s at Milton Keynes, U.K. for their These Days Tour, and Jon Bon Jovi told us all that These Days had just become Number One, beating Michael Jackson. That was a great concert. They arrived in a helicopter, and walked on stage hidden by a marching band who were playing Lay Your Hands On Me, then when the marching band finished and left the stage, Bon Jovi were revealed and they kicked off. It was amazing. I’m glad I got to see them perform live in their prime.

In 1984 I was 15yrs old and took a Greyhound from the cornfields of central Illinois to Milwaukee WI to live with my 20yr old boyfriend who had left the cornfields to avoid going to jail for driving without a license (again), “She’s a little runaway” was my favorite song! Looking back it’s a wonder I survived my teen years lol. After the summer was over we went back to our little country town and my boyfriend spent his 45 days in jail and eventually we all grew up, but I’ll never forget that summer!!! ❤

Touring with Scorpions was really big thing for them. The Scorps were easily the deadliest live band of that era - they just killed it every night. Tight and high energy with Klaus Meine nailing the vocals night after night. Bon Jovi got the best school imaginable watching that band every night.

I remember taking my 2 oldest sons to see 38 special. Bon Jovi had released slippery when wet...at that moment, I had only heard about Bon Jovi from my construction co workers...I was a single mom of 5 working my way to becoming a registered nurse. Anywhosie, BonJovi opened for 38 Special in Nashville ( one of my favorite bands at that time)...probably sometime in 1985?
I remember it was a packed crowd that diminished when 38 Special came on...I laugh about it now. Then, I was, like why is everyone leaving? A few months later, well I knew why. 😊 Many years later as my sons' dad was dying, he requested my oldest son to sing "Wanted Dead or Alive" at his funeral...he rocked it!!!
"Memories. Like the corners of my mind." I miss those days in the 80's. Thank you so much for your talent!❤

I remember the first time I heard Runaway. I was 16. Coming home from a date and was gassing up my Vega hatchback for the ride home. Standing at the pump with the radio blaring from an Exxon on Rt. 220 in Cumberland, MD, headed home across the state line to PA. I couldn't believe what I had heard. STILL their best song ever!!

I bought the Runaway cassette in 1983 (13 yrs old) when I was staying with my older sister for a couple weeks. She looked at the cover and was concerned about the long hair. She asked if mom and dad let me listen to that kind of music (I was generally listening to ACDC and Iron Maiden at the time). So I got it. I liked it. Still like it today, even if this early Bon Jovi work is mostly unknown by his fans.

Back in 1985, Jon Bonjovi came into our radio station while they were touring to promote the 7800 degrees Fahrenheit concert and album. I didn't do the interview that year, but I briefly met him. The following year, I was going to interview Jon on the air for the "Slippery When Wet" concert and the album. He walked into the studio, looked at me for a second, and asked, "Your Lane, right?" I was stunned! Nobody at the radio station told him who was doing the interview. He remembered me from the previous year. We weren't some mega station from NY or LA. We were a popular but mid-size market station in Northeast Ohio. I had a gut feeling he had serious staying power. After that, I always had tremendous respect for him, whether I like his current song or not. And yes, he's was very friendly, down to earth, and not pretentious in the least.

Growing up my area had two competing "pop" radio stations. One mainly sugary pop songs like Borderline, Karma Chameleon and the like. The other played the same stuff but not as often and also played the hard rock that started to be acceptable such as Some heads are going roll, Runaway, Run Run Away, I only listened to the second station due to songs like Runaway. It caught my attention and I loved it. I've always liked Bon Jovi and his solo work. His music has changed over the years and I've basically stayed with him but it's the early years that I still play more often. Great video Professor.

One of the benefits I had with Bon Jovi was small town American (Northern Minnesota). Not many radio stations played them so when I was in college my new buddies told me about Bon Jovi and when Slippery When Wet came out bought the CD immediately. Love love loved it. Then in typical fashion I went back to the record store and asked about any previous stuff they had and bought their first CD. Boy were they screwed. The first is nearly as good as Slippery and New Jersey, though 7800 was rather lame.
This is why growing up in the 80's rocked people. Jovi, Scorpions, Crue, etc.

Hey, Bon Jovi!! Probably my favorite band, hands down. Funny story..My husband and I were both in the Air Force. We had just married, I was 19, he was 21. We were stationed in England. In the Summer of 85, I was 5 months along with our first child, we had been married in 84. My husband got us 2 tickets to a day long Rock Festival at Donnington Speedway. It was the first concert we attend in the UK. The reason we were going? Zz Top!! So, we went to this all day rock concert. I wasn't really excited about the other bands playing that day..We were there for ZzTop! There was a Bon Jovi scheduled to perform. Since we had not lived in the States for a year or more, I had never heard of them. As the day wore on, we began to experience the insanity of an outdoor, all day concert in the UK! The crowds were highly inebriated and frankly, out of control. I begged my husband to have mercy on my pregnant self and leave! Nope! We weren't leaving until ZZTop performed. I was miserable and so angry. At some point, Bon Jovi took the stage..and I immediately knew I was seeing something new, something different. I was hooked. Through the years I have loved their music and caught a few concerts. A few years back Jon came to Atlanta. We live in Atlanta!! I grabbed my Sister inlaw and was treated to easily on of the best concerts I have ever attended. Jon was absolutely amazing. He performed the great hits, some new stuff and a couple covers..I was mesmerized. I probably would have eventually caught on to their music and been a fan. But, back in the Summer of 85, in England, no one knew who they were! When we moved back to the States in early 89, I got caught up on their music and became a life-long fan! Thank you for the story. I love hearing all the stories of the music that has really shaped my life. I grew up listening to numerous genres, born in the 60's. What a great time in the history of music to live thru!!! I
