I respect anyone who can resist the urge to juice and has the motivation to stay natural for a long period of time like you have. Lifting for 10+ years right? That's a long time to resist the dark side lol

Forget about competition, the real reward of natural bodybuilding is being well-built and strong for the rest of your life. I have been natural bodybuilding for the last 47 years and at 63 years old I am still in better shape than the vast majority 21 year olds out there. I never gave a damn about getting a trophy as I have been rewarded every single day of my adult life by enjoying great health. Sadly, I have lost most of my friends who started bodybuilding with me in the early seventies because they chose to take steroids and died an early death. Sure they all passed me up after they started juicing but later on they had to quit because of complications from the drugs, and they lost ALL their gains while I kept plugging away. And now I am still here and they no longer are. Stay natural.

This is as close to bodybuilding truth as we have ever gotten here on the internet. All the other so call nattys spew nothing but lies to one degree or another about how to build muscle. I now just workout for fun as a lifetime natty with little to no expectation of the results. Whatever gains I do make are well earned and well appreciated!

Don't feel bad Nick. I started at 16 lifting natural and went fairly heavy....never competitive heavy....but heavy for just a guy who liked to do it. Anyway at 37 I got married. 21 years lifting. I was 200 and pretty cut up. I was never what you would call "shredded" but after 21 years I looked damb good. 32 waist 19 inch arms ...great abs ...vascular symmetrical and so on. Well 2 kids later I'm now 290 and I'm not so sure I would ever take my shirt off in public. I'm 41. It took 4 years to go to shit. You still look good bro. Don't beat yourself up....in fact watching your channel has gotten me back in that spirit I used to have. I started exercising ..SLOWLY....but I started and that's what matters. Next I'm going to start the weights and I'm pretty confident that those 21 years meant something. I think my build and muscle memory will return. But here's hoping. Anyway...love your channel Nick and take it easy on yourself man. You've accomplished a lot and you still got it.

Hey man. . . I went from 172 to 230 over the course of a couple of years. Stress, bad diet, etc. . . I was always a lean athlete. Yeah, it's depressing, but you are doing good easing into it and believing you have that spirit again. Just know that over the past year and a half of hitting it hard. . . I've lost about 15 pounds, but have gone down a lot in BF %. . . I have more muscle and am stronger than I have ever been. As you know, it won't happen over night.
      Kill it brotha.

I bulked up to 225lbs with a relatively flat stomach, I cut to 190 and was shocked I couldn’t see my abs, cut to 182 and could barely see the beginnings of some abs up top but damn.....I looked good but was still fat ( to bodybuilding standards) I just couldn’t mentally keep cutting. That was a tough realization. Much respect to those who can.

I'm only only 5'6 and already weighing 150 shredded, if I was as tall as nick I'd probs be around 175 shredded. Always been the bigger kid back in class as a 12 year old. I used to get compliments on how big my calves were and how wide my shoulders were at my age and I never trained back then. The REALITY is for a man standing 5 7" to 5 9" tall to get what they call ripped contest condition. You will be no more than 140 to 150lbs MAX. BRUCE LEE TERRITORY. Thats the simple REALITY.

Natural bodybuilding is amazing, you feel great, you are healthy and you look great, the problem is when the natural bodybuilders go to compete, thats when everything goes wrong, you will feel like shit, you will look small and weird as fuck and you will be really unhealthy. Is important to clarify that since 95% of the people dont want to compete.

I did one natural show years ago, hosted at my old high school haha. I started the 16-week prep at 190lbs or so (5'9" as well), on stage I was a touch under 160. I couldn't believe I dropped 30 LBS during my prep, my coworkers noticed it too with the sunken facial features closer to show time. The dieting was crazy, you really notice how MUCH we eat during the day, not necessarily amount of food but the frequency. When it's just chicken, yams, rice, veggies etc it gets so boring. My cravings were manageable but I would definitely break and eat a small piece of chocolate here and there.
I was happy with my physique on stage but that was really before I started crushing leg day so my legs were decent but needed to come up. I placed 5th out of 7. After all that, dieting, bringing protein bars to the club with my friends (I actually did that lol), posing practice in the LA Fitness side room while a few times people laughed at me (stayed mentally strong which I'm proud of) it was an amazing personal challenge and accomplishment. A true bucket list feat.
Would I compete again? Absolutely not lol after that show I thought, other than being a bucket list feat, what did I even get out of that? I don't need others approving my physique. I don't need to pose in a tiny posing suit. I'm just going to train for me. And I can say with confidence at 31 years old and around 200lbs give or take I'm in better shape than most in the gym. I have mass, aesthetic and focus on those bodybuilding specific areas (rear delts, back, legs, trying to taper in the waist somehow). I love bodybuilding and absolutely know if I went to the dark side I would be a freak of nature and look incredible, but there's no way in hell I'm doing that because I truly believe there's no full-proof, 100% absolute SAFE way to do it. It's illegal for a reason and I'm throwing up my health to chance.
    Great video!

      @unknowndriver6652 5 років тому +7

Exactly and let me tell you something else that you maybe dont understand, doing a steroid cycle is not enough to transform your body you have to juice up several times a year and if you stop it your body will shrink again.. its a totally nosenses , lookimg good just for a few months then start it all over and over again

    • @Daurentius322
      @Daurentius322 5 років тому +21

@@unknowndriver6652 Actually there is one specific "benefit", if you can call it a benefit, that occurs after the use of steroids and that is the change in your nucleic make up, i.e. the nuclei in your muscle are drastically increased, so even if person A were to take steroids ONLY ONCE, the change in muscle nuclei are to hugely benefit him if he were to ever stop taking steroids, so much so in fact that the amount of muscle that person A will be able to build AFTERWARDS is exponentially more than that of anyone who has been lifting weights rigorously for an extended period of time without using steroids.
That is why when people resorted to taking steroids and decide to stop taking them, then claim to be "natural" they are full of sh*t, they're not natural because the increase in muscle nuclei is retained and is identical to that of any other individual that uses ANY form of androgenic steroids and so, despite not taking them anymore, you still have an advantage over those that have never actually taken any steroids.

The natural federations have an awesome opportunity to bring that look back with classic physique. But at my most recent show, I lost the open classic class to a guy who was already a pro open bodybuilder. So clearly, they're making natural classic physique just bodybuilding in different trunks. What a shame.

When I lifted I did so for functional strength, as well as to keep in decent shape. It also helps that the side effects are feeling great and having high confidence! I never worried much about my body fat, mainly because I had always been skinny until the time I started lifting. I've never used any PED's, but I have been on the fence for years about it. I did a lot of research on it years ago, but today I feel like I am content with the gains I made already so I don't think I'll ever go that route.

From an older dude. I've been lifting natural my whole life [40 years]. Back when I was a kid, it was tough seeing someone come into the gym, and within a year be as big, or bigger than you when you've been lifting for over ten years. I ate everything I could catch, and at my biggest I weighed appox 230lbs [not ripped..lol] 6ft tall.
However, I've been looking at guys in my area who were heavy on steroids, [as well as retired bodybuilders] and I look way better than they do as they have lost EVERYTHING they had back in the day [I'm speaking about the guys still lifting]. You may be smaller lifting natural at this time in your life vs others who take steroids, BUT you will look better than the people who did the roids when you get older.
Take a look at someone like the actor Charles Bronson [not the inmate with the same name, but the legend CB]. Anyway, from what I've read CB basically just did pushups, sit ups, and that type of thing, but he had a really amazing physic, even when he was in his 70s. Clint Eastwood is another good example, but unlike Bronson, Clint did do some weight lifting as well as running to keep in shape, and of course Clint is still going strong at nearly 90 years old.
So, unless you're going to be a professional athlete, and have to take roids to keep your edge to be competitive, just stay natural, and KEEP LIFTING!
Also, one thing, again as an older guy, don't get caught up in trying to lift heavy. Its a hard thing to do, as I would try to lift heavier than the guys in the gym who did the roids. I was very competitive, and over did a lot of my workouts trying to go as heavy lifting as I could [I guess I was trying to prove a point back then]. You WILL PAY FOR THIS WHEN YOU GET OLDER, AND ITS NOT WORTH IT! I can't tell you how much it sucked [a couple of years ago] to barely be able to walk without a cane or walker, when you see someone else your age, who never lifted, dancing around like Fred Astaire.
I got a second chance, and went completely off sugar for over a year now, and tried strict Keto, Now my back/hip pain is completely gone! There are many though, that lifted heavy back in the day, like me, who weren't so lucky. Most of them can barely move, and have to be medicated when they do move.
    Good luck.

Nick, have never left you a comment before... Great channel and this was great video... Take my advice, don't be so hard on yourself. I'm thinking as a natural bodybuilder, you probably needed way more time to prepare. While ever I haven't competed, I know what is required to lose fat and you can easily spend a year to go from 18 to 9 percent bodyfat. The slower you get lean, the less muscle you will lose. As you would guess, the additional benefit would be that you will retain a lot more of your strength. Also, since you are not losing as much weight as quickly, you would not be as calorie restricted thereby keeping your emotions in check. I think you are better of showing up to the show erring on the side of little bigger than more ripped. Better yet, don't rely on yourself to be your judge. A lot of successful people are their own harshest critics. If one wanted to continue to move forward in natural bodybuilding, it would be wise to go no higher than 10-11% in the "offseason" because as you said, each lb. at that low bodyfat level makes a noticeable difference. Success is a balance of being passionate about something while at the same time having the ability to remove emotions from the decision making process. It's not an easy thing to do... Keep up the good work. Again, great channel. I think you have the the makings of someone who will go far in life. Take care.

Hey Nick. I'm a big fan of your show. You're doing a great job at keeping us informed as well as showcasing the old and new in bodybuilding. My one comment, concern or suggestion relates to this last segment. It came across to me as discouraging to kids or people that might be interested in pursuing or competing in natural bodybuilding. Natural bodybuilding is an amazing sport. There are a lot of amazing athletes that it has produced. The positives go on and on. Its safer. You can do it your whole life. It doesn't ruin your organs. You get better with age. You have to pay much more attention to your diet and lifting technique. The list goes on. Even if you want to go the drug route it makes more sense to go as far as you can naturally from a physique standpoint as well as a competition experience standpoint. As far as your comments about losing a ton of weight for a show and losing muscle, most Natural Pros, and when I say that, I mean truly natural, stay in shape year round and only drop 10 or 20 pounds to get into contest shape. Gone are the days of bulking and cutting dramatically in Natural Bodybuilding. Here in Texas, we have several organizations like David Nall's Naturally Fit Federation along with the WNBF, INBF, etc. that do an amazing jobs of keeping it clean. Most people know the competitors who compete naturally so when some crazy big guy comes along that nobody knows it's pretty obvious and they often get busted. Now, I'm not ragging the big boys in the IFBB or NPC at all because I love and respect them too and like most people have looked up to those guys. However, the first pro who really personally inspired me when I was working out next to him was Russ Testo in NY. I used to see him out dancing. As you might know he was an amazing poser. Well he was an amazing dancer as well. There would be a line of women just waiting for their turn. I was like "look at that guy!!! I want to look like that! Then when I moved to Texas I met guys like David Lee Nall, Miles Stoval and Dave Goodin, all of whom are not only great pro bodybuilders and multi time world champs, but are amazing athletes as well. Miles I believe is 53 now and looks the same as he was 30 years ago and still does gymnastics, as many handstand push ups as he wants and win contests. These guys have physiques that most people can actually achieve without drugs. That's inspiring. I competed in the NPC years ago and got my ass kicked and that's fine but I never ragged those guys or the work they put in. I'm sure you get my point here. I'm a fitness professional and have respect for anyone trying to better themselves and even though IFBB bodybuilding is pretty unhealthy in the end, I still support it in many ways. You've built an awesome platform Nick and I'm very thankful for what you are doing. I look forward to your shows. I just think in all fairness you should paint Natural Bodybuilding in a positive light. It's a great sport. Maybe in the future, if you haven't already, you could do some segments on some of the natural guys I mentioned earlier or someone you may have in mind? I know they've earned it. Thanks again Nick for all that you do for our sport.

i went through everything you did and competed at 63kgs - 69kg then got stuck into the gear world and training turns to 'what drugs can i buy' then changing your body becomes easy, (I could do a shit and i would grow muscle) then i would compete at 79kgs under 5%. So drugs do work and the industry is FULL OF SHIT.
If you want to enjoy training and life stay natural and dont fall for all the lies.
Great informative video for all the new people to the sport.

Would you say steroids have impacted your health and how young you look in any way? I mean if the only side effect of steroids is that ''you will be natty when you stop'' then i might as well get myself some tren. I am 21 and lifting for 3 years and my genetics are above average my father and grandfather are both huge and were working out when younger, my back is naturally wide and was like that even before i started lifting, so are my calves, chest is ok and so are shoulders and my weakest point are my arms so i think i can get where i want naturally (10%-8% body fat) while maintaining most of my gains, i am at 14% right now. I am going for a David Laid, Jon Skywalker(not natty i know but he is 6,4 and i am only 5,11) physique, would you recommend me steroids if you knew me? Btw if your answer is yes i won't run out to find me some so don't worry, it's just an educated question.

7:15 Regarding so much of it being water weight... well, YES, but let's understand that muscles are 80% out of water, in fact our body by weight is 75-80% water weight, and by molecule quantity actually over 95% (water molecules are tiny compared to minerals, proteins, etc.). So, losing water weight does mean at some point losing actually muscle. Just being very clinical and accurate about this.
Thank you for your incredible honest in this, saying "natural bodybuilding sucks", and yet staying with your integrity to not ever wreck your body with pharmaceuticals. Hats off. I'm also in your camp and never have tried gear, and don't intend to.

BroI〈 en drum Machine Don't do it dude. If you come off a cycle at that age, you really really stunt your natural testosterone production. You'll be an estrogen cage.

Subscribed cause we have to support the naturals busting their ass out here but get over shadowed by steroid users.

nick, I totally agree with you. I am a natural bodybuilder as well, and I weight 200lbs 5"8 when I was bulking , I have my arm measurement of 17.5 inches and i feel big. then I start to cut for my first show and I was thinking I will cut down to 160 and looks shredded. But I end up to weight 149lbs on stage and I look small.
If you are natural bodybuilder, you lose so much size when you cut

Love your videos. Disagree with a few statements. You obviously did everything wrong your first time out(who doesn't). I'm not a natty anymore but I was for 17 years. You don't have to lose that much size. If you aren't a genetic freak, you need to stay within 10 lbs of contest weight and keep your weight loss to no more than 1 lb per week. You need to use extreme discretion with cardio and the volume of your training. 1 1/2 hour workouts are great in the off season but in a state of caloric deficit 40 min tops. Even if you aren't a fan of HIT, pre contest its the bomb. Great for retaining muscle.

Shut up grandpa. It's impossible to not lose size when you drop bodyweight. You look like shit, your opinion means nothing.
