OMG MARA I am so excited for this!!! I’m literally on a cruise right now with dodgy wifi but I’m determined to watch this straight away!! I’ve just watched you pick the books and I’m feeling positive ahhh!! All of those would be ones I would recommend to u so I’m going into this confident😎😎
Ok 3.5 for Thursday Murder club I’m happy with that!! Yes the humour is v v British so I can understand that being an issue!! I feel the same way about AGGGTM references (which is why I’m so angry they changed the location in the US version) but that’s not as humorous so I think it’s not as much of an issue!! Holding out hope I get a 4 or 4.5 star soon🙏🏻🙏🏻
OMG YESSS!! The lady hardcastle mystery is actually the one I was hoping you would like the most that makes me so happy!! I agree the writing and the characters are the best part of that one!
YESSSS another 4 star I’m so happy!! I feel successful knowing your star rating system haha😂😂 thank u so much for trusting my recommendations!!
So... seeing as I'm clearly the book triplet to the three of you, I need to know how I get both of you to read (if you haven't) Janice Hallet's The Appeal and tell me what you think...
@Mam Jallow Oh thank you!
I cannot even explain how much I love this crossover!!!
If you’re currently on your trip I hope you’re doing well. I hope your enjoyment is outweighing any anxiety, and that you’re finding peaceful and relaxing moments. I’m someone who struggles with traveling a lot, I understand so much, it made me feel happy to know you were stepping out and putting the worry aside, but I also know it’s okay if there are hard moments!
I can totally understand not quite getting the humour of Thursday Murder Club. She did mention in a previous vlog that it won’t be for everyone. I’m Canadian so perhaps my culture being a bit more aligned with the British may have contributed to my enjoyment. I gave it four stars. I really enjoyed how the characters use old people stereotypes to their advantage when getting into their shenanigans. I found that a lot more in the second book The Man Who Died Twice. The ending of the second one made me a bit teary eyed. I’ll be continuing on with this quirky series 😆
Love this! I actually preferred the second Murder club book. It’s a bit more absurd but I enjoyed it a lot! Definitely intrigued by the other two in this video.
I saw Meg's twin video and it was so much fun. Hopefully you enjoy the books you picked. Wishing you a great reading month.
Commented before the video was over and didn't realize you read the books in this video. Glad you enjoyed the books. The Devil in the Dark Water sounds particularly good.
I'm so glad you finally got to devil in the dark water, I was so on the fence with this one! But knowing your taste, and the way you describe the books vibes... I'll probably like it as well!
Really glad I got a heads up this is light on the whodunit. I'll just enjoy the characters, vibe and story then! With a little detecting treat at the end apparently! 😁
I’m so happy you liked In the Market for Murder. I love those books!! Also, I recommend reading the second book in the Thursday Murder Club. I liked the first book in that series but I loved the second one! It is so much better than the first one.
Love that the Lady Hardcastle books are on Kindle Unlimited too, fun free palate cleansers ☺️
Mara, I hope you’re having fun in the UK! Happy to see this Sunday treat.
I first heard of the Lady Hardcastle mysteries from Hannah Louise Poston. That plus the fact that they’re available on Kindle Unlimited (ebook & audio) sold them for me. They’re fun!
I really loved The Thursday Murder Club!
I was waiting with so much excitement for this video! So glad you liked Lady Hardcastle, it's a series I've been enjoying this year!
It's so good!
That cozy sounds delightful, but then again I like a cozy or a sci-fi romance as a "palate cleanser" in between my "heavier " mystery /urban fantasy series reads. I've already read and enjoyed The Thursday Murder Book Club. This was so fun. I did Not know about her channel though so I have subscribed to her, thanks to you. She seems as much of a delight as you are just the British version. 😉 Have a wonderful time during your trip. 😊
Oh man, I've literally been searching for books that give me Midsommer Murder vibes and The Thursday Murder Club had it for me! 😍😍😍
I loved the Devil and the Dark Water way better then his first book. It was a 5 star for sure. It was pitched as Sherlock Holmes and Pirates of the Carribean but at the end it gave me Count Of Monte Cristo Vibes. Count of Monte Cristo is one of my all time favorites.
Ooo, yes, great comparison!
Quote of the Day: “It’s just chaos but in a great way.”
I love Thursday murder club, and good girls guide is such an addictive read for all 3 books. Over read almost all of these and enjoyed them. The cozy mysteries are all on kindle unlimited with the audiobooks if you want to continue with the series
Love this video!!! Also girl Meg is better at editing than ALLLLL of us 😅 but I love hearing you both talk about these books, you have so much respect for the slow burn straightforward mysteries!!
I had the same reaction to Thursday Murder Club, but someone told me to give the audio a try. It 100% brought through the humor. Still didn’t get all the jokes, but the narrator’s inflection still gave a chuckle.
The second murder club book is better! I loved it, I hope you give it a try Mara.
I liked the Thursday Club, but I loved The Marlow Murder Club by Robert Thorogood better, similar concept but more intriguing Midsommer Murder cross with a Ms Marple type main character
See I have the exact reverse preference... but both are really good.
I loved Marlowe Murder Club! Modern day sassy Miss Marple . The mystery wasn’t gobsmacking but it was a page turner with humour! Looking forward to #2
I'm the same. I have never really decided on whether I really liked the Thursday Murder Club (I thought the 2nd was better than the 1st but ultimately wasn't sure if I liked either all that much) but I really did enjoy The Marlow Murder Club!
Haven't heard of this one but... looks like I need to read it!
Yep this 100%
Omg I loved ‘The Unwanted Guest’ by Shari Lapena too! We could all be triplets lol
okay I love watching you guys love each other 😭
This was such a fun video! I loved the twins video, and this was a great follow up. All of these are going on my TBR. I'm curious about the Thursday Murder Club because I also typically enjoy that dry/nonsensical British humor, and now I want to know what's up with the book, lol. I'm so excited to try the cozy mystery series! When you said parts of the writing were Christie-esque, I literally turned to the screen and went "Whaaa?" out loud 😆
I was delightfully surprised by the writing!
Very fun!
I died at “…wasting like a Victorian Tuberculosis Patient.” 😂
(I appreciate the dark humour)
I didn't love The Thursday Murder Club either-- it's been awhile but I think I found it a bit trite. I gave it 3 stars. I have considered the Lady Hardcastle Mysteries a few times and suggesting they may have been spies moved it right up my TBR. Looking forward to it! Fun video! I enjoy the comparing TBRs and faves!
This was a really great idea! Nice job Meg & Mara!
Hi Mara, I’m wondering if you have read any of the Brother Cadfael books by Ellis Peters. They are murder mysteries set in an English monastery in the 1100s. There a 20 in the series, I think. The first one was a bit slow, but after that they are quite good, I think. A bit cosy but not at all twee.
Hmm read the first one and didn't love it, but maybe need to try the next one?
Totally read Thursday Murder Club! I know Richard Osman from different British TV Shows (I like him much). And I really thought initially that this book became best seller, just because people like him, but I totally love the book! So lovely book and so lovely characters! And I even cried at some point. I am about to read his second one as well.
PS. Oh, I reached the point where you actually read it. Well, I love the humour, although I don't get the British humour, but I love it here, I just love the book, love it love it love it
And about the Guest List - it's strange because in general I liked it, I like the ending, but when thinking about it I am like - all characters are sooo annoying, especially the girl (Olivia??), on top of all I get her drama immediately, because what else it could be...
What a great little vlog project! I love discovering reviewers with similar tastes to me because their recommendations are always the best
I also just recently rewatched video essayist Be Kind Rewinds latest video all about the movies of Dolly Parton. I thought of you sconce you mentioned you were a fan a few months ago. It’s an excellent (if long) watch.
I love Be Kind Rewind! I have a few of her videos I need to catch up on
Meg is indeed brilliant at video editing and has brilliant Meme Placement 🔥
I gave 3 stars to the Devil and the Dark Water mainly because I felt like the pacing didn't work for me and there were too many character perspectives BUT I really enjoyed how this book was wrapped up as well. the twist at the end was a fun surprise because I did think that while it wasn't a shocker, it still wasn't what I expected. However I was so confused for half this book because when I went into it, I misunderstood the synopsis and thought Arent was going to be killed because it literally says "Travelling with him [Pipps] is his loyal bodyguard, Arent Hayes, who is slaughtered". Like, what??? 😂
Totally can see the pacing thing - I think Meg did a good job of setting my expectations for it to be pretty slow, so it ended up being fine for me, but I can def see that
If liking Isolated Close Circle Mysteries is a criterion, then I’m a twin of Mara’s too lol #NancyDrewBitches
Just read One by One and it was okay. I highly recommend The Hunting Party by Lucy Foley. Update 1: Wrote this before i saw the end of the vid 😁 Update 2 The Hunting Party is waaay better then The Guest List.
This is adorable 🥰 Yay besties!
Your reaction when she got to #1 though 😆...too funny.
Overall you seem to be twins!
I think I downloaded the wrong ‘Twitches’! (Tia Mowry Stans unite!)
Shame you didn't like "Thursday Murder Club".I listened to the audiobook and I think you would have "got" the British humour more.Perhaps try listening to the sequel "The Man Who Died Twice".It's read by Lesley Manville who - by the way - has just done the TV adaption of "Moonflower Murders"
I want to be a #NancyDrewBish too!
😍📕📕📕🏳️🌈📚📚👍👌🏾
I’m very iffy about Nostalgic Crime Fiction because Queer People weren’t a thing at some point which makes me scared.
