  • I was super nostalgic one day and wrote down 10 things I missed about my childhood in the 90s. This piece holds very dear to my heart as I often find myself reminiscing the days before the internet and how much slower everything felt. I hope you enjoy this video and please share with me what you miss from your childhood!

    Riding my bike everywhere (not for exercise, literally just because it was fun), putting those beads or a card on your bike to deck it out, Dragon Ball Z, watching all Disney movies on VHS, tire swings, charm bracelets (those chain link ones), braiding colourful strings in your hair, hoop earrings, jaw breakers, hot wheels, chubby sodas, velvet scrunchies, those stretchy comb headbands and manually rolling car windows down. /nostalgia

    i was born on january 7th 1990. i too have been very nostalgic lately - homesick if it makes sense. it was another time. before iphones, facebook, twitter and all that. i mean, there are good things today, but i am happy i grew up in a time before everything got digitalized. i miss going to record stores and asking the cashier if i could please listen to the new spice girls album. i miss going to blockbuster to pick out a movie to watch for the weekend - vhs style. i too miss building forts and having sleepovers under them during the weekends. i miss my 90s and early 00s teen movies + tv shows (my so called life is one of the greatest things ever) - scream, the faculty, clueless, 10 things i hate about you, bring it on, but i'm a cheerleader, save the last dance, crazy/beautiful, get over it not to mention the x-files and twin peaks (both of which i was way to young to watch at the time, but did anyways), roswell etcetcetc. teen films has never been the same. i miss dancing around in my living room listening to my dads vinyl collection and getting freaked the hell out everytime i listened to his copy of "jeff wayne's musical version of the war of the worlds". i miss watching goosebumps + are you afraid of the dark every week and watching mtv when it was actually still a music channel. r&b was my jam in the 90s. but then again so was grunge, pop, hip hop and other good stuff and i guess that's why my taste in music is so far and wide today. god, mixtapes were cool - what a cute way to show a special someone how much you liked them #bringitback. my pre-teen gay heart just couldn't handle the cuteness of josh hartnett. i was also totally in love with scott from five, but if i had to list all of my boy crushes from that time, it would take forever hah. fashions and trends were on point too. my lava lamp was the greatest thing ever, but i never got an inflateable chair or backpack (though i wanted both badly). lastly, do anyone remember when people brought their stationary computers to school during exams? hah, imagining that today makes me laugh. ok, i'll stop now. i could go on forever about the greatness of the 90s. thank you for doing this video karen, and for reminding me of a "better" time. it is a piece of art. lot's and lot's of 90s love to you from the other side of the world x andy

      @@gurlbye1752 i never said i went to the record store to listen to the first spice girls album (their last album came out in 2000). i grew up in the city center and would walk by the record store every day on my way home from school, which is why i dropped by all of the time. i would spend all of my allowance on cd's. i don't know about other kids, but i was very into music from a young age and grew up watching MTV and VH1 every day after school. ain't nothing wrong with my memories.

      Do you have older siblings? I was born in 1995 and noticed that people born in the mid-90s identify a lot more with the 90s if they had older siblings! My brother is 6 years older than me and I watched lots of the shows he watched (Boy Meets World, Clarissa Explains It All, Sabrina) and listened to the music he listened to. My friend, on the other hand, has no older siblings and we sometimes even experience a bit of a generation gap because of it! She's never even seen Boy Meets World and was never into NSYNC or the Backstreet Boys like I was. Our childhoods were pretty different.

    I miss watching cheesy TVB dramas (on those heavy chunky TVs) with my family whilst huddling around in the living room, I miss the presence of my grandparents around the house before they started to miss their motherland and retired back to Hong Kong, I miss rewatching my old baby videos on the VCR during the early 2000s, I miss the cosy old-fashioned interior decor before we moved into the new house, I miss the days where I actually spent time playing with my older brother before we grew apart and had our own hobbies on the internet/gaming consoles, I miss the old fashioned family gatherings where my cousins actually played together instead of sitting in the corner on our phones, I miss keeping up with a diary because now I feel like I'm losing track of my memories and time.. ah, time is moving too quickly!

    What do I miss from my childhood?
    How I could pass through the day without a care in the world. Riding my bike down hills and past parks, down nature trails and to my grandma's house. I would go around all day having fun with my brother. I had him and he had me.
    When the day sky would change into a deep blue, and the street lamps had come on. We would head home. There we watched old movies from our giant collection. And I would try to convince my brother that I saw him cheat in our mancala game. We would fall asleep to the sound of muffled voices coming from the box set. Only the dim lamp light showing signs of life in our cozy basement room.
    We fell asleep with the thought of what bike trail we would go on in the morning. What time we would visit grandma. Or If we would go play basketball or swing on the playset. Maybe we would help mom cook. Or see who could catch the most grasshoppers.
    Life was good.

    YAAAS! This was my childhood, as well! Especially watching Titanic in the evening with my parents! And you had 'Goosebumps'! I loved (and still love!) this series. I think I had nearly every book and reading was a big part of my childhood! What I miss the most is in fact the reading part. Now I'm so distracted by the Internet and Netflix, back in the days I came home from school and read the whole day. Or I went over to my friends and we were sharing books. What else I miss is riding with the bike to school. Nearly everyone came with the bike to school and on the place where you lock them we were meeting and chatting a little bit. And what I really miss are those 'friend books'. Were every friend became it's own site and wrote something in it. And I miss the mixtapes! Friends were always sharing their music on mixtapes. When I think about it, I miss so many things from my childhood! Sigh, feeling really nostalgic right now....
    (And to the Leo part, I remember when everyone saied that his carrer is now over, after watching Titanic and he will never be as succesful as then! Haha!)

    So true.. To me The end of the 90s was the end of the age of innocence... I never thought that the 90s would end, it was the best of times. I mean it had its share of setbacks but I can never again be that young girl, the youth of growing up, Grandeous times... The 90s weren't supposed to end.. But they did... 😢😢

    I was born in 1990 so I am the definition of the 90s kid. I miss it every day. I guess the simpler life, we had no social media and no advanced internet. We would read encyclopedias instead of googling stuff, the lack of social media was good because of no cyberbullying and you know what? I think we were happier. Of course is very practical having all of nowadays, for example, to watch the tv shows I had to be there the exact time, we would wait excitedly to not miss the show because would not repeat it. Sometimes the repeats were on Saturdays and you had to wait that hehe. I had no pager because I was very little and was expensive but I remember cousins that had it. I loved walkman was fun. Remember of roller disco?? That was fun. I often remember all that and smile.

    I'm really surprised at how many people are nitpicking some of your stylistic choices (music, decor) when it's obvious you chose them based on the Wes Anderson theme! There's so much unoriginal and uncreative shit on UA-cam nowadays, I don't understand why they're focusing their energy on complaining about your video which is hands down one of the most refreshingly original videos I've seen on UA-cam in awhile, maybe ever. You've gained a new subscriber :)

    Why choose music that is so 1940s when the focus of the video was quintessential 90s? That was jarring for me but everything else was awesome! And you could still easily do all these things now if you wanted to! haha :-)

      @riokins 8 років тому +4

    • @RealJessiJackalope
      @RealJessiJackalope 8 років тому +18

      I agree with you. I thought the choice of music disrupted the 90s aesthetic - which was otherwise very well produced.

    • @RealJessiJackalope
      @RealJessiJackalope 8 років тому +17

      But was she going for a Wes Anderson style? Isn't that just the style that other people have attributed to this video without her actually aiming for that? She usually has her own style.

    • @riokins
      @riokins 8 років тому

      Wes Anderson has a very distinct style and I don't think we're putting words in her mouth to say she was at the very least inspired by his style in the making of this video. It explains the "odd" choice of music everyone is complaining about.

    • @mychalmay7282
      @mychalmay7282 7 років тому

      SaintOrCinema of coarse you can do all of these things now, but the reason you would do them back then is because you had no choice. Everything in the video you saw was simply because of the time and the technology that wasn't like it is now, so technically of coarse you can do it today, but why would you if you have a phone?

    I miss everything, from being able to play outside go bike riding, walking to go buy candy from the local small store with out being called for by the police or your parents not getting blamed. How boy bands and girl bands were a thing and no one talked about sex and drugs much. How innocent thing we're back in the 90's. Roller blading, listening to CD's, and writing notes to your buff about your crush at school. Good memories.

    We all know there are so much more we miss from the 90s. I was fortunate to grow up as a 9 year old in 1994. Early 90s was ripe of the things that made the 90s. There are two types of nostalgia of the 90s - 1) for Kids 2) for adults. The Kids experienced never before seen inventions of toys and video games. Toy & video game Manufactures were the early pioneers of what the kids liked at that time . Once the kids got into their early teens in the late 90s, the girls loved the rise of boy bands and boys still loved video games and new music. The adults at that time (like my father) owned an electronics business and the late 80s and early 90s were the best time to own a business selling electronics. He also sold audio and video which was huge in demand for all consumers. Hand held cameras and new audio systems were so popular that my always had to travel 40 miles in los angeles to meet his seller to get more cameras. It was J. Kwon, a korean distributor (not the rapper). As a boy, my 90s favorites were 90s morning cartoons of Toon Town, TGIF lineup, goosebumps books (and tv show), board games, christmas time, 90s movies, sega genesis, gameboy, laser tag and the light up shoes. Then in the late 90s in my teens, it was skateboarding, surfing, volcom, etnies, playstation and n64 and we cant forget the music! Every middle school played will smiths "Gettin Jiggy with it" at their school dances. It was also the time we discovered mad crushes on girls and it interfered with your school work. So many things I could say. But well done on this video.

    Who the hell was using a rotary in the 90's?! I wasn't, I had that cool ass see thru phone that lit up when it rang LOL. Tetris was EVERYTHING. I miss making mixtapes, and the precision you needed to record a song off the radio without getting the commercial.

    Cute video! But the rotary phone & tape cassette was outdated for the 90's. The princess touch phone was replacing it during the 80's, & CD's was replacing records/tape cassettes/VHS. I always used pencil to manually rewind the tape cassette. What I miss about the 90's were Body Shop stores were I bought Leap perfume, tech stores that had interesting novelty items, & big open book stores, Drew Carey Show, the popularity of alternative rock.
