My last phone before I got the Galaxy S10 was an Essential PH1 made from ceramic and titanium. I dropped that phone countless times on concrete, ice, hardwood floors, etc & that phone was a tank! Neither the screen or the ceramic back had any cracks after a almost 2 years of using the phone. Ceramic can be very durable.

You forget that at least the S10 has a fingerprint scanner. The Face Id still works fine on it, which means it was lowered to Apple's standards. If the iPhone had an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, it too wouldn't work

Well, it doesn't make sense to me that properly working fingerprint scanner is used as a criteria and that it had impact on s10s' score because iPhone doesn't have an ultra sonic fingerprint scanner so we don't have a guarantee that it would continue working properly after the drop. My point is that the disfunction of the fingerprint scanner shouldn't have impacted s10' score because the rest of the phone was still working properly, unlike the iPhone. P.S. he said that the bonus round is not important, but why wouldn't it be? Of course no one would drop a phone 10 times in a row, but the phone will, during its life time, eventually drop more than 3 times. I think you should put more thinking into this method of calculating points.
I don't really care about built quality anymore because i kinda learned how to not drop my phone. I just don't drop my phone. In 1 year I probably drop my phone 1 time but I have a case so I don't care.
It will be happened unexpected if you accidently drop the phone when you getting bored with case or temporary without case & in progress to find new case.

I thank you for having a more scientifically accurate test. I despise tests that are indefinite in height (e.g. having two people holding phones) and can vary results between both phones. I feel like it would be better if you dropped more phones, giving more data, allowing for an even more accurate test. The population is too little, and I feel like conclusions can’t be drawn yet. At least a 3 phones from each. I understand that that would cost much more, but it would help us, as a consumer, to be able to pick and identify which is truly more durable. There can always be outliers in any test, and increasing the population will help improve the accuracy of results.
I think bonus round should be based on how many drops it survived. Technically speaking, the iPhone only survived 2 drops, the 3rd killed it. It should only get 2 points. Forgetting, later remembering, that you said 6 was minimum, but still, it is a round, it should be different.
The bonus round is kinda lucky anyway, the same phone might survive 10 drops and still be working and another time it may be done after two drops already. If you really want a good comparison, you had to do the same test like 10 or more times, so basically destroying at least 20 phones. That would be non sense, so that bonus round is really just to test some more because the phone is cracked already anyway, so why not. Still not a very useful round.
Now I'm having my doubts about the in display fingerprint scanner. It looks to me that even if you had a decent case and screen protector, a really hard drop could break it even if the phone didn't suffer any glass damage. On top of that replacing that screen with the fingerprint scanner in it is going to be ridiculously expensive!
The new scoring system is terrible, every phone should get what it deserved, not 10 points if it passed the other one but still did bad, neither 6 points if it did terribly and deserved lower than that. The old scoring system was perfect and needed nothing more. Now it is just unfair. With the old scoring system, the Samsung have probably won, so I give the win to the Galaxy S10+.

Second, I think it would be pretty darn cool to see drop tests on watches as well, they get bumped into to walls all the time and their resistance should matter to everyone. I like the way you perform the drop tests. Your method makes it even, and eliminates the human component. However.... I would prefer that you start with the corner drop test since that would emulate a natural drop and most common. One could also argue that beginning with a back drop increases the chance of breaking glass due to the fact that most phones have a camera bump and that will transfer energy unevenly when dropped flat
Frankly it should have lost. The damage on the iphone in the first round may look better, but the iPhone was still totaled. That damage requires a full device replacement while the damage on the S10 did not
The bump creates more impact since all the force are concentrated on tat particular area! It is worse then being flat because it would be able to disperse the force! Gosh you guys suck at basic physics -_-

This test was done pretty poorly. When doing an experiment you have to have multiple test subjects of how ever many types you are testing. 1 new phone for each test, that's how it should have been done in order for proper results.
On my iPad Pro 9.7 inch the top and the bottom parts of the touchscreen doesn’t work. And has a broken display. Most of the cracks on it arm by the edge of the iPad.
It would be much more useful if you would start with drops on carpets or parquet from low height. Then we would really see a difference, cause the way you do it, both screens are broken instantly...

@Genes you can still unlock it with a pass code. Not being able to use what appeared to be 1/4 of the screen is definitely worse. All of those apps in those two rows are unusable until you find some way to move them. Would there be some way of doing that through iTunes, cuz otherwise you're screwed
One of the things that is very different between the two phones is that the glass that Apple makes and develops (or bought from Corning that is modified) tends to have less spiderweb cracking. I think Apple is trying to find ways to decrease spiderweb cracks on a smartphone because many of the small debris from the cracked glass is sharper and more hazardous to people.
@@timo5229 The S10+ is not that heavy. Its 175g, and the ceramic version of it is 198g. Those are pretty low numbers when compared to the iPhone XS Max which weighs 208g.
Considering the price of a back replacement for the iPhone, the S10+ won by a large margin. Finally, the iPhone should not have 6 in the bonus round bc it last only 2 drops vs 10 on the S10+, so it should have 2 out of 10.
Round 2 is wrong. S10 looked less damage then the iPhone. Round 3 is wrong. You can't compare the S10's finger print technology if the iPhone does even have a finger print sensor.
Your scoring system is terrible. Especially on the bonus round here. Every video i mention it regardless of the winner. I especially have issues with the first round where the iphone wins despite the damage being so bad it actually requires a full device replacement due to Apple's bad design. An example of where the damage doesnt look as bad, keyword look, but is actually worst. $500 worse
Since the screen shattered over the ultrasonic fingerprint scanner it no longer works but if the glass shattered over the notch then Face ID wouldn’t work so I feel that they both have a weakness in that area
is that an old model xs max because im pretty sure they made some new ones even stronger so my friend said after he dropped it literally over the 100th time so idk just be aware i think they have made the glass stronger and if thats an older xs max it may not do quite aswell as a newer one
a guy i work with has a s10+ and he dropped it out his pocket when he took it out, it slipped out his hand, so about 3 foot, he had a tpu case on and the samsung official screen protector, it landed on the corner, cracked the edge of the glass. which wouldnt sound too terrible except the bottom half of the display became totally unresponsive to any touches rendering the phone essentially dead. He tried to get it fixed but ended up having to file an insurance claim and have the whole phone replaced.
Apple's sales has been fucked since 2018. They can't even complete their own target sales now. Isheeps keep defending them. Even Dave made a video. All their premium MacBook can't even hod their keyboard integrity for at least 3 months . The retina display people brag about has the highest failure rate among laptops. Their ipads are bendgate all over again. Their flagship $1200+ iphones got outperformed in every category just after 5 months of their launch. What can I say 💯🖕😹🖕💯.

The iPhone looks way worse in the second test where the corner on the bottom is completely wrecked, while the glass on the S10 yes is fractured all across but it's like that kind of break where it's still usable and you can't feel the cracks on the glass, that's what it looks like. The S10’s fingerprint scanner stopped working in the third round. The bonus round has the least significance because it is highly unlikely for a person to drop the phone face down 10 consecutive times in real life.

It's not as important as the other three because of the scenario shown in the video. Yes, dropping your phone 10 times in a year is a likely occurrence, but having all of those times land face down on the same surface is not, so different results may show.

wow, great review, exactly what i needed, i have an s8 plus i smashed many times, still working but its time to change it. i was thinking at samsung A72, but after first crack screen dont work no more. im not so much into technology, i feel like all phones do the same job for me, but the screen, its worth it, just wow.
Samsung had made the glass thinner this time around to reduce the mass of the phone, but at the cost of the easiness for the glass to break. See S9+ drop test and you know right away
It's not really about the fingerprint scanner, it's more so about a phone losing it's main method of secure authentication. We tested FaceID on the iPhone, and if it didn't work we would have penalized it as well (but it worked without a problem).

Jerryrigeverything showed that even scratches can cause the finger print to stop working, so yes it's obviously a huge flaw but at least the phone is usable! Great video anyways as always!
Correction: the Galaxy S10+ only has Gorilla Glass 6 on the front. Samsung used Gorilla Glass 5 on the back.

The r3 is not fair because the iPhone doesn't have a feature like that therefore was not able to break.
The first test is more unfair. The damage to the iphone, while it doesnt look as bad, is far more severe

Why is Gorilla Glass 6/5 worser than 4?? My S6 Edge got a little scatter on the display after 5 drops or something and the back is still undamaged.
Iphone camera bump saves it from losing, but at the same time camera bump is very annoying
Frankly it should have lost. The damage on the iphone in the first round may look better, but the iPhone was still totaled. That damage requires a full device replacement while the damage on the S10 did not

This test was done pretty poorly. When doing an experiment you have to have multiple test subjects of how ever many types you are testing. 1 new phone for each test, that's how it should have been done in order for proper results.
This is literally the most accurate and controlled drop test on UA-cam

On my iPad Pro 9.7 inch the top and the bottom parts of the touchscreen doesn’t work. And has a broken display. Most of the cracks on it arm by the edge of the iPad.
It would be much more useful if you would start with drops on carpets or parquet from low height.
Then we would really see a difference, cause the way you do it, both screens are broken instantly...

@Genes you can still unlock it with a pass code. Not being able to use what appeared to be 1/4 of the screen is definitely worse. All of those apps in those two rows are unusable until you find some way to move them. Would there be some way of doing that through iTunes, cuz otherwise you're screwed

One of the things that is very different between the two phones is that the glass that Apple makes and develops (or bought from Corning that is modified) tends to have less spiderweb cracking. I think Apple is trying to find ways to decrease spiderweb cracks on a smartphone because many of the small debris from the cracked glass is sharper and more hazardous to people.

The S10+ is not that heavy. Its 175g, and the ceramic version of it is 198g. Those are pretty low numbers when compared to the iPhone XS Max which weighs 208g.
But the back glass panel on the xs max price's is damn outragous.

Considering the price of a back replacement for the iPhone, the S10+ won by a large margin. Finally, the iPhone should not have 6 in the bonus round bc it last only 2 drops vs 10 on the S10+, so it should have 2 out of 10.

Your scoring system is terrible. Especially on the bonus round here. Every video i mention it regardless of the winner. I especially have issues with the first round where the iphone wins despite the damage being so bad it actually requires a full device replacement due to Apple's bad design. An example of where the damage doesnt look as bad, keyword look, but is actually worst. $500 worse

a guy i work with has a s10+ and he dropped it out his pocket when he took it out, it slipped out his hand, so about 3 foot, he had a tpu case on and the samsung official screen protector, it landed on the corner, cracked the edge of the glass. which wouldnt sound too terrible except the bottom half of the display became totally unresponsive to any touches rendering the phone essentially dead. He tried to get it fixed but ended up having to file an insurance claim and have the whole phone replaced.

In a state of emergency I doubt anyone would care about their fingerprint scanner is working or not. All they would care is if they can call the emergency services or not. Apple fails at that , Samsung passes. Choice is yours.

The iPhone looks way worse in the second test where the corner on the bottom is completely wrecked, while the glass on the S10 yes is fractured all across but it's like that kind of break where it's still usable and you can't feel the cracks on the glass, that's what it looks like. While the iPhone's corner looks jagged and rough but yet still got a 10?

The S10’s fingerprint scanner stopped working in the third round. The bonus round has the least significance because it is highly unlikely for a person to drop the phone face down 10 consecutive times in real life.

Yes, dropping your phone 10 times in a year is a likely occurrence, but having all of those times land face down on the same surface is not, so different results may show.

wow, great review, exactly what i needed, i have an s8 plus i smashed many times, still working but its time to change it. i was thinking at samsung A72, but after first crack screen dont work no more. im not so much into technology, i feel like all phones do the same job for me, but the screen, its worth it, just wow.
Samsung had made the glass thinner this time around to reduce the mass of the phone, but at the cost of the easiness for the glass to break. See S9+ drop test and you know right away

It's not really about the fingerprint scanner, it's more so about a phone losing it's main method of secure authentication. We tested FaceID on the iPhone, and if it didn't work we would have penalized it as well (but it worked without a problem).
@@PhoneBuff As that's an excellent point, the scoring was still pretty unfair considering the S10 worked after 10 falls compared to the iPhones 3.. Jerryrigeverything showed that even scratches can cause the finger print to stop working, so yes it's obviously a huge flaw but at least the phone is usable!
