Totally agree on Sylvester and Sophie (7+Ace) perhaps being the best classic TARDIS team. There are many great pairings, but Ace has a fully fleshed arc and is the absolute total opposite of her Doctor (besides both wanting to do good in their own ways). They have impeccable chemistry and constantly flit between a light and fun teacher/student dynamic (vs) the sly parent and the rebellious teenager who clash over differing ideas. Seven is the manipulative anti-violence chess-master with an "Ace up his sleeve", who happens to be an explosion-loving go-getter. They may be the last classic pair, but I consider them the first 'modern' team -- and their presence passively elevates each story.
