The Doctor Who Show has been around as a podcast since 2016 and has grown to be one of the most popular Doctor Who podcasts in the world, regularly appearing in the Top 10/Top 20 of the iTunes 'Great Britain : TV Reviews' charts when it releases an episode. The Ballad of the Last Chance Saloon - Reimagined & Rehabilitated! | Doctor Who
Переглядів 2142 місяці тому
The Ballad of the Last Chance Saloon was an original song composed for the 1966 Doctor Who story, The Gunfighters. Performed by Lynda Baron, the song doubled as a "Greek chorus" style narration for the storyline and is one of its more criticised aspects on a number of levels. For the Doctor Who Show's fourth 'Gin & TARDIS' special (which was released earlier today and examines The Gunfighters),...

They mentioned The Rani. And if it wasn’t for TATR she would have been an option. Which I think is fair enough.
Great review guys. Only just stumbled on this. Season 11 is largely overlooked. I guess due to it being the final Pertwee year. Personally I'd take it over Season 10 (controversial I know!)
Good lists. I went for Lady Adrastra from Creature From The Pit Vivienne Fay Helen A Azure from Flux (Thought she was great) Eldrad #1 Did consider Mara possessed Tegan 🤷♂️
this is a terrific ( nerdy 😊) rabbithole to go down, and very nicely done! i got here during a search into this same subject. i find a Wonderful piece that , naturally agrees with your points . however what is super cool about it, is that it comes from an article written on the subject of Outfit and Gear, written by a massively popular Cricketer during the actual Edwardian era ! a must read for you, and any other ( nerds like us ) who are here to scratch the itch of this funny olde question. thank you for putting this together. I think it is of note, just how incredibly cool the episode Black Orchid was during Davidson's run ! Also, in general, those blokes were wearing more Correct to Period kit for a leisurely , Gentleman's afternoon of Cricket and Cocktails on the lawn. i think it would have been Super Super Cool if one of the Participants.. or at least one of the Spectators... had commented something like : "my word, what an Eccentric and Unusual outfit, i wonder what Club he belongs to ? " and/or " Super, now that you are here Sir, let's get you kitted out with some proper Boots . .. " .? might also have been a great moment for Pete to do one of his fun moments where he acts all young/awkward about an uncomfortable subject... or do one of the Tom Baker gags where he tells them a lovely little quick story of a historical character who gifted him the outfit ( like Madame Nostradamus knitting him his scarf ! ) . i am glad Who nerds like us have forums like this to revel in our Anoraks ! Cheers !
Love Axos and The Mutants (Yes, really). Not so keen on their Tom stories, although The Invisible Enemy is fun. Don’t think anyone could accuse them of thinking small. 😂. And Im a big fan of Nightmare of Eden, albeit it’s just one of the dynamic duo behind it.
The main thing about Bob Baker and Dave Martin that comes to mind for me is: CATCHPHRASES. Eldrad must live. Contact has been made. The Quest is the Quest.
Oh GOOD POINT!!
Nothing like seeing a new video is up. Really enjoyable, an interesting topic. For me it's The Doctor Falls. Imagine the impact of Capaldi regenerating angrily in the Tardis. A missed opportunity as there would be nothing quite like it
I have watched this more times than I care to admit 🤣
Thank you! It's a catchy little number! :)
@@theDWshow Thank you for making this I love it 🥰
Wow
Season 24 …🤔. Well, I guess Delta is passable. Thats my favourite. The other three …I doubt Ill watch those again., although I do agree that Paradise Towers has a lot of good ideas in it. Delta is bonkers. Only Doctor Who could have Ken Dodd as an intergalactic toll-booth guard ! Don Henderson is impressive. Quietly menacing and worthy of a reappearance if he hadn’t died. I wouldn’t want all my Who to be like this, but as a one-off I can find plenty that puts a smile on my face. Im with Rob - Grace, Graham and the Doctor. I reckon that was a missed opportunity. They should have killed off Ryan and had the middle aged couple travel with 13. Even if just for half a dozen stories. All kinds of unexplored dynamics could have been tried out with those three. Killing Grace off so suddenly was a mistake imho. The actress really bounced off of Bradley. (You guys watched Fallout ? I started it the other day, and am up to episode 4. No doubt it helps that Im a big fan of the games, but this is good. The only disappointment is there’s only the one season, so far. I’m going to stretch this out for as long as I can. Highly recommended, if you haven’t already watched)
For me. Planet of Evil The Android Invasion (Both remarkable stories) Colony In Space (Its wonderful. Best watched after reading the TARGET) The Dominators (B movie Who at its best. The Quarks are legendary) The Smugglers (I love a good pirate story and bet this is fantastic if we could actually watch it. Hartnell is fantastic)
I wish they could release a version of this minus the song. Im sick of it after 15 minutes. Shame, because the actual story isn’t that bad. Hartnell is a delight and plays off of the other actors really well. Peter looks a bit lost throughout and I can’t even remember what Dodo does. Anyway, certainly nowhere near as bad as received “wisdom” told me it was. When I eventually saw the story I was pleasantly surprised. There’s been a few of those. Stories I didn’t watch on transmission but the impression I got over time was that they were terrible stories. When I finally saw them, I was delighted. The main ones being Nightmare of Eden (it’s wonderful, bonkers but wonderful); Delta And The Bannermen (Bonkers dialled up to 11); and Happjness Patrol (Really bloody good). The Gunfighters is almost one of those. Only the song spoils it for me. A 3 star story.
I enjoyed this immensely. Its unsettling to think just how old these films are now 😮. Thankfully, they still stand up as the masterpieces they are. Every couple of years, Ill happily sit myself down and watch all three extended versions and enjoy every second. Is Fellowship the best of the three ? Hmm. Its either that or ROTK. I am a sucker for “journey” stories - see also Watership Down and The Keys Of Marinus, amongst others. The fellowship itself is a delight, with a wonderful motley crew. My only niggle is making Gimli a bit of a comic character. Book Gimli was a dignified, proud dwarf, and the sarcastic, dwarf-throwing Jackson version didn’t quite hit the mark for me. Im currently watching Rings Of Power. It’s not bad, not great. I don’t see why certain critics are being so harsh on it. But, the one thing it does for me is underline just how wonderful those original three Jackson films are. Shame his magic touch didn’t stretch to The Hobbit films. Loved the Meet The Feebles mention 😂. Ive never met anyone else who has seen that. Its been a long time since I myself watched it - vivid memories of the heroin addicted bunny, and the media fly that always seemed to be sitting on a turd 🤣. Think Ill have to get myself a copy. Anyway, looking forward to hearing how Dave gets on with the other films. Good stuff, gents 👍🏻 Take care 😊
That was a hard one ! Think you guys definitely picked the top stories. I struggled to think of many others. Timelash ? Maybe, if we assume the Borad is the government. The Krotons ? Again, presuming the crystalline beasties are the government. Trying to think of a Third Doctor example. He seems to be an obvious one with his disdain of bureaucracy, but my mind’s gone blank. I guess Day Of The Daleks could be a contender. The Mutants ? Anyway, regardless, you both picked out the best choices. The one thing I came away with is wishing someone would find The Savages !! I’m convinced that one would leap up in popularity if we could sit and watch it.
Timelash a nice pull!!
There is a new era one. Very new in fact. The one with the delightful performance by Millie Gibson. 73 yards.

@@theDWshowYou’re the top option when I searched too 🤷♂️
Why do you not put the full episodes on UA-cam?
A few reasons, really. First, as I said on the video, UA-cam isn't a great place for audio-only content. As such, the shorter the content the better. So given our monthly shows last an hour and a half in general, if we can get away with just posting 30-40 mins of the main topic from those shows instead, that makes better sense. Second, UA-cam content works when it's based around a single topic. Meanwhile on our monthly show we riff on Doctor Who, cover the month's news, raise several short topics, and read listener emails, all of which combined often lasts longer than the main topic itself. It's a 'messy' grouping of information that doesn't really suit the UA-cam format which is, again, based around a single topic. (In this sense, our List Makers show, for example, works a lot better on UA-cam. While it's audio only, which is a negative for the platform, on the flipside it's short, and dedicated to one topic. Out monthlies aren't like that.) Third, without overstating it, we're a podcast. UA-cam is very much a secondary platform for us, and if what we post here interests people and converts them to actually listening to us as a podcast instead, that's a win for us. And the benefit for the listener is they get more content. So, a win-win. I like win-wins. I can riff on some more reasons, but they'd be the big three. For another example, timeliness. If someone came across a video in 5 years time and it had us talking about that months news for half an hour... how boring. Old news. But with just the main topic on offer, it becomes a lot more 'evergreen' as content. I actually always thought people realised the shows were cut from longer episodes with the way we just come in hot, and start talking about the topic immediately with no preamble, welcome to the show, etc. But happy to have clarified here!
The podcast way of doing things is much better for me. I listen to these in bed, usually (Yeah, my life is THAT exciting 😂) and the last thing I want is for the dialogue to be interrupted by someone yelling at me to check out whatever the APP of the week is ! With the podcast version I know I can click on Play, lie back and enjoy uninterrupted chat.
I just listened to it, and am thoroughly pleased. I simply cannot wait for parts two and three!
@@Zobie2game that’s really lovely to hear, cheers!
Great show as per usual. Just wondering do you know how we can watch classic episodes here in Australia. I was going to subscribe to Britbox but heard they have been removed.
Hi Pete, the short answer is, "I don't know..." as I own everything on DVD/Blu-ray and have never had to look for it on streaming. I believe you are right - it's no longer available through Britbox unless you're in the UK or US where I believe it remains. I think it was on Apple TV for awhile, but is now gone. It's a bit of a mess, honestly. - Rob
I'm pissed off that we weren't informed from the get-go that The Chase was being edited. Had I known that I would have bought the UK set. To present the set without that information pisses me off. I'm on a Disability Pension, so I can't afford getting two copies (and, as I type, I can only find one UK set for sale on eBay, for AU $699!). As the scene was intact on DVD in Australia it's bloody annoying that it's missing from Blu-ray here. I also have a Blu-ray rip of the UK episode, so f#%$ them.
Another great episode, cheers! Really love The Crusade. For me it's the one where you can visibly see William Hartnell having the most fun he ever had in the role. All the cast are great as well. Top notch and would love for this to be completed over very many others in the future
Another person who first encountered this via the book. I was far too young to appreciate the writing and even the plot, but when I eventually saw the one surviving episode I was impressed It certainly was a joy when The Lion was discovered. I wish some more missing episodes would turn up. Its been so long now …😕 One thing I like about The Crusades is it’s another adventure where the Doctor and Vicki hang out and get up to all kinds of mischief. They’re a great double act in The Romans and The Web Planet even, and their scenes with the merchant are charming. It always felt to me that the Doctor’s relationship with Vicki was much more grandfatherly than his relationship with Susan ever was. Anyway, what a cast in this. The smooth direction. The dialogue. The sets. The costumes. Great stuff. If the other two episodes popped up somewhere I would be delighted.
I love The Crusade! its top shelf Who. really brilliantly written, the dialogue is stellar.
There is a photograph of Peter at a costume fitting and as per the instructions and the nod to Brideshead Revisited, he is wearing all white.
I would describe The God Complex as overlooked rather than underrated. It came 11th in the DWM 60th poll, and I find if I ask people about it, it is generally liked, but ask for a great 11th Doctor story and it seldom gets remembered
@@andrewwilson6240 I understand the difference, but they’re pretty close bedfellows - being underrated or overlooked. It’s through being overlooked that people don’t talk about something, whilst talking about other shows, which creates the situation of being underrated.
Nice choices, definitely some overlooked gems there. State of Decay, Boom Town, definitely The Android Invasion unfairly overlooked. Have a soft spot for The Bells of Saint John even though that probably isn't too great. Love the Mind Robber, a sequel nowadays would be great, the possibilities are endless. Carnival of Monsters literally my favourite 70s story, dont see why thats not mentioned among the big names
Also the Mysterious Planet from Trial. A Robert Holmes classic for me, great one liners!
Great lists Dave and Rob. Android Invasion is a personal favourite.
“Androids with fingers in their guns” 😂
Yes, I heard that in the edit. Not much I could do. We all know what Dave *meant* - Rob
How many prints do they make of the Limited Edition Version of Dr Who Collection in Australia, or are they different depending on which Doctor, like more printed for Tom Baker Seasons
No idea. With the way they wouldn't even reply to my questions about taking over the range back when the changeover happened, I doubt they will release that sort of information. Hopefully for something like Season 20, which was out for almost a year in the UK and is the same region coding as Australia, they didn't produce a 'full' run, or they'll be trying to sell the bloody things until the next ice age.
For me it's Web planet The space museum Ark in space Android invasion Invasion of time
The Doctor Who "universe" has already visited Lady Jane Grey. The Sarah Jane Adventure episode Lost in Time had Sarah, Clyde and Rani cast into various times to fetch a mcguffin for the Captain. Rani was sent to be Lady Jane's personal maid.
Can't agree more about Ireland. As an Irish fan, I cant really believe it hasn't happened in the show proper at some stage. The Book of Kells McGann audio is the closest it got. At least Sydney appeared onscreen in The Pilot via cgi, yet no Ireland, surprising. Lady Jane Grey was done quite well in the sja's, still good idea though for the main show
Am I actually first?.. or did I use my tardis to come back and post before the others that follow… THAT is the question.
possibly he was doing something else like merlin patrick troughton and there is a youtube vid where somebody has darken his hair and shirt also it adds to season 6b
One of the reasons who did so well up to Jodi was, for the most part, stories that held together internally. Where the Dr worked things out & then had to make some effort to put put their ideas into action. Where the plot, the story came first and any 'morals' came second. Not sht that we're getting now. Less money involved would just make things even worse.
I feel like subbing but I'd ruin the 777.
I think the irony is that even with the extra money these episodes still felt very locked into one to three locations for the most part - the one exception I can think of is 73 yards and that was easily the best episode for me. My point I guess is are they really doing much more that ghost or monster of the weeks stories anyway? Feel a little let down my this series but there’s some good in it too.
Same problem we had when Dr. Who became a woman. Some people think all heroes should be White and Male. My only complaint about recent series was too short to let characters properly evolve and too long till next episode.
I think some of us are just tired of that being the excuse. The writing isn't as good as it used to be. I want diversity in my shows, but I don't want diversity to be a shield.
@@kawallabair3216W0rD 💥
One of my favourite series in recent years is the dark comedy anthology Inside No 9. Every episode takes place in a different location, with the only link being the number 9. They deliberately have small casts, and some episodes take place in a single room, but they've had supernatural stories and a time travel episode alongside more mainstream stories. Despite its low budget and being shown on BBC 2 on a Wednesday night, it has won awards and got around 2 million viewers, which is about the same as the overnight figures for this series. I also enjoy the Ghost Story for Christmas episodes, which are also pretty low budget. So why not take a leaf out of their book and decide to concentrate on stories that are atmospheric and suspenseful?
It's certainly where at least some episodes would go, if they return to making the series on 'BBC money', per RTDs comments in March. And I think the show would actually be better for it. It runs counter to this dream of Doctor Who being some sort of Marvel-esque, Avengers-esque, orgy of CGI... but I find older fans hate that vibe and younger types aren't fussed.
@theDWshow The series was always supposed to be scary, at least for kids. It could be again.
Thanks very much for such a measured response, Rob. I'd seen an increasing number of YT posts about this and your contribution is much needed reasonableness in a maelstrom of hyperbole.
You’re welcome! Someone needed to say it :)
The late, great Jon Pertwee once said that part of the appeal of Doctor Who, at least in the classic era, was precisely the slightly 'amateurish' elements that were forced on the show by the limited budgets, like a moment when you could briefly glimpse through the gauze beneath a Dalek's domed head and see the profile of the actor's head inside, or even the black plimsole shoes of the Dalek operator showing for an instant as it 'glided' across a floor. All the CGI 'bells and whistles' that big budget productions deliver don't really make up for unimaginative stories, and Doctor Who has been blessed with highly imaginative writers (excepting a few real turkeys) right from the start in 1963. Long may that continue. Good, sensible, video - well said.
I agree that having access to CGI tends to push stories in directions that are... I won't go as far to say 'lazy' but certainly easier than telling good stories. When you can roll on 10,000 Daleks and make a spectacle, you don't have to think as hard about the story as when you only have three daleks and a cardboard set. I get what you (and Jon!) mean.
@@theDWshow I agree. The tendency to focus on visuals and effects is kind of lazy, the easy way out. It's a problem you can solve by throwing more money at it to buy bigger and faster computers; it's much harder to create good stories. You can see the same tendency in American businesses, which love to hire consultants and buy new project-management software as a substitute for actually improving their methods, workplace, or service.
i 100% agree, we need more classical shots. Simple villains. Bring back the Daleks. Cybermen. Sontarans. The Master. The Time Lords. Dont tell us "Oh this guy is the next Doctor and he will appear in THIS episode." Do what classic who did. SURPRISE US.
Is it on the UK version of The Space Museum/The Chase DVDs? I have the US version and it doesn't have it,
I remember first seeing it on a DVD, which would have either been a UK or AU release... and I'm inclined to think it was UK, so I would say yes. I would check for you, however, when the Blu-ray set came out, I passed along the DVD to a friend. The UK Blu-ray set has the scene, too. The AU Blu-rays, meanwhile, did not.
Doctor Who in 2005 was a sensation in the UK!
I know! DWMs editor saying it wasn't an overnight success is just... I have no words for it. Why is he trying to rewrite history?!?
@@theDWshow people sometimes get things wrong. Even me occasionally, if you can believe such a thing…
Was huge in NZ as well. It is not every day that a tv show makes top news in NZ. Doctor Who is a cult classic. You can blame the BBC for not cultivating the show since it came back fully. Letting Disney get involved is the worst mistake the show has ever made, and a sign that the BBC failed it. That is not the main reason why the ratings have tanked elsewhere in the world. The British Commonwealth will not pay Disney to watch it; they managed to piss off the fans from those countries. I know that this season is the first I have not watched since Jodie finished, because of Disney's involvement in my access.
@@theDWshow DWM did adopt a rather disingenuous, almost 'propagandist' tone during the early years of the new show, and from what I hear it's heading back in that direction now - I'd look at claims like this one about 2005 with that in mind, i.e. perhaps it suits a particular narrative for somebody somewhere in the 'chain of command'.
I think less money and a higher episode count is what the show needs
Necessity can sometimes be the mother of invention, that's for sure.
I totally agree. The series doesn't need huge budgets if the scripts and acting are good. You can have a great episode with three characters trapped in a room if it's well written and acted, but you can still have some bigger stories if you just allocate the money accordingly. So you could have more episodes (maybe 12 and a special) but have a couple of bottle episodes with small casts (claustrophobic ghost stories as you say) and still have a bigger story with a world ending threat.
Just goes to show that people are never really happy. Plus it’s the internet-the fact people take things face value 65% of the time and don’t get check things for themselves 🤦🏼
Plus, the kind of person who finds a channel that always says what they want to hear - whether it's reality or not - and just eats up anything that channel has to say because it's comforting and doesn't challenge them and confirms everything they'd like to be the case, even when it's not. Those folk are super hard to get through to.
@@theDWshow it’s like talking to a brick wall, or in this case, the vacuum of the a vortex, nothing getting through and only louder noise coming back
