I live in Hamilton county too. I am sad that they thought a rail trail was a better way to go than the railroad that shaped their town. Also it’s the 83a, not the 84a
Living in Sacramento my whole life, railroad heritage has surrounded me since day 1. My passion from trains since I was a kid grew into a pretty solid interest and understanding of railroading in America, both then and now. I’m now an adult and still have so much to learn, but I’m pretty darn proud to be a part of this community, and amazed at how resilient we are, rising to the challenge in order to keep the railroad history of the US alive into the 21st century and beyond.
Honestly it’s hard to believe just how much really happened through the decade. Having the Mark Twain Zephyr near me, it really gives me joy to see just how fast projects can move when they have dedicated crews behind them
It's amazing to see so many people share the love of trains, myself included. There really is something special about them, something that just can't be described in words. Though we may have lost many railroads and engines along the way, I will always appreciate the wonderful mechanical masterpieces of history that are still around today and those who work hard to preserve them for future generations to enjoy.
Absolutely amazing. No one could have summed it up better. One of the best videos I’ve ever seen. Love all these railroads and old steamers. Keep up the great work!
Hear in Australia its been a crazy decade aswell. E.g. 3801 and 6039 restored, and the announcement of K183 being restored after being in storage for 18 years after a deadly wreck in 2002.
Yeah, and for the past two years of this decade, Rx224 is coming back into service this year and 621 recently returned in a beautiful new livery! Also Perronne returned to steam last year as well.
I love this video so much. Not just the content either, but the sentiment and what it represents as well. This video embodies basically everything I love about the railfanning and railroading community. Thank you for putting this together Brian! Here’s to another great decade!
12:54 the Joliet rocket wasn’t the only excursion in Chicago the 765 pulled. A couple years before it also pulled excursions from Chicago to Janesville, Wisconsin dells with the train dubbed “The Varsity” which I am glad to say I’ve rode on as a kid!
Wow, just wow! What a great insight to rail preservation as whole and in the possible future. Also, what a great conclusion and ending! Thanks for your thoughts on the matter, and happy railroading!
Speaking of which a little known thing I’m preservation news is how Illinois railroad museum is planning to build a historic down town as well as a roundhouse with a turntable built to turn challengers
I'd love to see one of the NWSW Ex GTW 0-8-0's restored to running condition, might never happen unfortunately, the one IRM has is in great shape and last ran in revenue freight service 1980. Which is pretty recent for a steamer.
There was a lot winning going on the last decade in the steam railroad community. It’s such a good feeling knowing that a portions of our history are coming back to life.
Excellent video. It's great to look back of a decade of railroad preservation in review. I understand the value of railroad preservation to our society. I'll keep helping out the railroad preservation industry. I've made big steam memories, the top two were N&W 611 and UP 4014. Despite the many challenges in this industry, there have been alot exciting railfan events with historic trains. Looking forward to more steam in 2021 and beyond.
One thing I think that gets overlooked is all of the Pacific Parlour cars got rescued following their retirement. Thus all 6 original Hi-Level Sky Lounges are safe. I know WGN got one, Steam Railroading Institute got two, one went to Washington state or Oregon, and the last I think went to a private owner. The sixth and unrebuilt lounge #39971 is privately owned and currently for sale.
11:25 I actually have that exact paint theme as an HO model it doesn't run very good but I kind of want to keep the body and just put it on a new thing whatever you call the part that makes it move and just have it operate from there and repaint some old train cars that we have lying around to the Burlington Paint Job
We have sustained many losses some permanent some not but as long as there are people who care the preservation movement will continue long into the future and with CSX's new support for several restorations like 2716 and others we may see steam on the mainline again and with this pandemic finnaly starting to come to and end, full capacity excursions will run again. (Also that ending is spectacular)
In my opinion, railroad preservation is one of the best examples of, if enough like minded people apply themselves to one common goal, the can do anything. There are so many steamers, running and not, that were rescued from the scrapyard and restored to their former glory. Down here in Oklahoma, we don’t have too many notable locomotives. At our only Railroad Museum, we have a CF7, Three RS3s, an F unit, Two SW1500s, and only a couple more. Sure it’s not too many but every locomotive is one more piece of history saved.
Love it! I’m surprised you didn’t have a section on southern steamers coming back to life, from 2009 to 2014, 4 southern railway steamers came back to life!
In the last couple of years alone the amount of newly restored to operation steam locomotives all over the country has been nothing short of amazing. In the last 6 months there’s been at least 10 I’ve seen brought back and last year was about the same. Since big boy it feels like restoration has taken off and the fact UP donated 3985, and 5511, and the amount of work in progress restoration projects here in Texas alone is astonishing. Most of the display steamers in Texas I’ve stopped and seen are mostly being cosmeticly restored and if the funding is there to operations. SP 771 2-8-2 that was in Victoria Texas in my childhood is my dream restoration project
The Conway Scenic Railroad got the steam locomotive 7470 up and running again in 2019 and bought a second steam locomotive Maine Central 501 with plans to restore and operate at the railroad. It is just wating for Boston and Maine 4268 to finish being restored. 4268 is an old demonstrator unit I'm told, which is why it's skirt is different than other F units.
It's 2022 and #2102 was restored and runs under its own power in eastern PA thank you Reading and Northern and Reading Blue Mountain and Northern for #425. Which in 2009 was restored. Nothin's better then seeing a steam locomitove running by itself.
1:41 I’m kinda sad that this was the only appearance in this video that my favorite steam engine, Everett Railroad #11, made. But I was still shocked to see her appear since she’s not as famed as engines like 765, 611, 4014 and 1309
I live right next to the CCR&M, and our old heavy mikado was the best engine in the area. Unfortunately the boiler and crown needed to be redone, and insurance dropped us. No.15 may not run again, but we're hoping it comes back.
