  • For a western city where railroads preferred to build around mountains, one company dared to build through them. Although the first alignment thru Rollins Pass proved to be daunting and too much to handle, the persistence of David Moffat's vision helped turn this incomplete pike into an integral artery of the west.

Edit: Wow! I definitely did not expect to get this many likes. Thanks!

The legendary crossing over Stevens Pass with the switch backs, the 2 mile long tunnel, and eventually the 8 mile long tunnel that stands today with the legendary W1 electrics that has both been scrapped.
The three attempts are pretty well explained in the short lived extreme trains TV show, and I discovered the W1s through further research.

When I was in junior high in Colorado, my library had a book about building the Moffat Road. I was absolutely fascinated with it. Years later I drove both sides of the pass (since you can't go clear through due to the collapse in the Needle tunnel). It was such a treat to see the remnants of the railroad as well as marvel at how insane it was to build over that mountain. If I remember right, I was there in mid June and dealt with a small flurry. Or just really cold rain. Either way, it was hardly feeling summer up there.

I’ve heard of many of the surrounding routes. The Royal Gorge is now a scenic railroad, which I personally think they need a steam engine. Also, on a documentary in the series Extreme Trains, Matt Bown showed the location of the original route and talked about a disaster of two trains being swept down the mountains. Great job on the Vedic look forward to the next one!

Really interesting video. I had no idea that the railroad once run up through Rollins Pass. I drove up there in my truck and its pretty gnarly. It's really neat and fascinating how the Moffat Tunnel Sub comes up from Denver, runs along the side of the mountains on the front range and then cuts in to go further up into the mountains. Not a lot of traffic but really cool to see trains along this route.

(Highly unlikely) Alternative ending: the plans for the Denver and Salt Lake fizzle out after Moffat's death in 1911. Meanwhile, the Colorado Midland, the first standard gauge railroad built over Colorado's Continental Divide, somehow finds a way to survive after the 1920s, and Colorado Springs is the most populous city in Colorado.
