Soil looks great. I like the way the yetters seal things up in case you don't get rain for 4 weeks. Keeps the seedzone wet long enough for good emergence.
We planted corn last summer. About 10 square metres in front of the chook house. We had a magnificent crop and were about 2 days of picking a years supply of cobs for the kitchen when a plague of rats moved in and stripped every cob bare. After the corn they moved on to the pumpkins.
I'm sure all this information will help me someday when I'm a big time corn farmer. I am concerned though that if you keep capturing all that carbon you are going to stop the greenhouse effect I need to lengthen my growing season.
Nice review of the closing wheels. I always liked the idea of two yetter twisters. What’s your opinion on the 360 wave coulter that closes the bottom of the trench?
When i use the bio coat gold i always feel like the dust just blows off. So i actually take a hand sprayer and pre wet the seed alittle then sprinkle and mix. I put a small amount of there soil primer in the jug of water and did it this year. I dont have any precision sensors. Just the old light ones. Seems to help germination when soil is dryer on my winter wheat last fall.
I tried some extract too this year. I did a side by side trial and only thing I changed was extract vs spectrum ds. Spectrum did show an advantage. I couldn't tell you if it off set the cost. It doesn't take much product for that. Also had seashield and rejuvenate on both. Less than Half gal for 50 acres. I think the rejuvenate helps the most. It's a molasses base product.
One thing you can do next year is to make your own compost tea, adds it to furrow when you plant, You can add it ,add with aea prduct will get biology going
I put the SI finger tills on when I switched my row units out to ME2's from the Allis quadra discs, looks like they're a pretty good value still compared to the other types, holly cow there proud of spiked closing wheels😆, plus they weigh 16 pounds so no spring pressure required. Corey Trout made a planter video a few years ago and he had the Finger Tills so I went that way.
Hey Jon, great video! I liked your explanation on closing wheels and what you want the result to be. As you know, rubber wheels were designed for full tillage powdered dirt! I’d be curious if you use any seed control at the bottom of the seed tube, such as rebounders or keetons. Maybe a future video?
I used to use firmers, and they built up with dirt and drag seeds. When I got this planter, I was thinking at first of how I need to add all the goodies, but I held off, and now I am glad I did.
@@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 Your White planter looks like it works very well. I’m impressed with the ones I’ve seen, and you seem really pleased with yours.
Was just looking for some info on those closing wheel types for next year, mainly those spiked closers. Does the combination of 1 spiked/1 smooth work well together? Might be a good combo to try without spending too much. Can't go wrong with a ground drive, super simple. I wish I could find a small 3pt mounted strip till machine to try out... wouldn't even need any fertilizer option on it, just something to try out in some wet areas when they're dried up.
Good morning Jon. Your planter looks to be doing a good job. Would it be possible to have a strip till attachment in front of the planter, therefore doing both jobs in one pass. Unless that is no benefit for your farming practices. 👍
That would be awesome to do someday. I thought maybe have a strip-till machine kind of like a grader frame, the strip-till toolbar goes where the blade would be and then the plant would be kind of on like a forklift mast on the back
Did not do a yield plot, that's not how AEA sells products. If a biological did good in a test plot do you buy more biological or farm in a manner to grow more biology?
Help soil life. $5 an acre Maybe it helps germination? For 5$ it can be something that can help build natural fertility in the soil vs buying some expensive NPK for in furrow
If you know the history, that planter should work like a sewing machine. That's going to be my next change on my planter, the closing wheels. I might try one factory and one flat star steel. We are dry as hell here in south east Michigan. Since the ice storm in March we were getting enough rain to keep me working on inside projects (because it only rained on the weekend) but we never got enough rain to replenish the subsoil. I buried one of my horses on New Years day and below 8 inches the ground was dry as a bone. No real rain in the forecast for us. Looks like 1988 expect back then I didn't know what notill was. Now I do.
@@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 there are guys worse off than we are. I'm planting today and there is still a little moisture to work with. Never take a good rain for granted. I'm going to be optimistic. Dust it in and bust the bin.
Isn't it amazing how much easier life and farming are once you get into the regenerative cover crops, I don't put on liquid either. Waste of $ it's chemical farming, your now biology farming. I've found biology and chemistry balance eachother out as both are necessary... better biology will eat the bad chemistry faster. You will notice absolutely no difference. "POP UP" fertilizer is a conspiracy! Lol. Ok, now I gotta watch the rest of video. OH yea all of my great planes drills are ground driven and had a guy suggest I out hydronic drives on them... I about punched him. Now I'm all set with JD best row sense I'll use it on my corn planter, but I would rather have a ground driven corn planter too... hyd drives are now all reliant on satellites and other sensors that complicate things. If you didn't strip till you wouldn't need those spiked closers or be worried about side wall compaction planting straight into no till, especially with cover crop. Just gotta rib ya a little. Cuz I know ya. Feel free to fire back, I could use it! Lol.
There was several topics of pop-up fertilizer in the different Farm chat groups. Everyone talked about a point of moisture dryer or maybe a couple bushel gain on a small test plot. A couple guys even talked about how it made them some dollars to the acre. But $10 to the acre for less than the cost of the product Glenn these fields get healthy and functioning then I will no longer need strip-till, other than by the time to get healthy and functioning I will be planting into big thick cover crops I will use strip-till to make a Zone for the cash crop to grow

Wtf? A swarm of rats. How do you control that?
Cleansweep is amazing i was on the fence but it has its place in every operation
Great information. Joe did a amazing job on Thursday with the students.
Oh you got ahold of him?! Nice

360 looks OK, a guy in Iowa did a few hundred side by sides vs y drop and these types of applicators and saw zero yield difference.

That's exactly what mine does. I thought about putting some moisture on the seed. Next year I'd like to make an extract with it

Just realized I ordered the incorrect lid cover seal for you. I was thinking of a 8000 series not a 9000 series.
Uh oh, I got the hood latch to work, so I can return all that stuff

Might be a dumb question but would the isectiside on the seed mess with your planter box treatment
I was told no. But untreated seed would be better?!

No. I'm not spending that kind of money and by the time we are harvesting there is zero season left
