Beautiful Davie! I've been following you for a good bit now, and you've taught me more than you could ever imagine. Your techniques are wonderfully shown and explained through your videos, and I, WE, can't thank you enough for giving up your time to teach us some of what you've mastered. Almost in every video I learn something different that I can apply to another pattern besides the one your teaching at the time. You truly have a gift for tying and teaching. Today is January 2nd, 2015. I hope you and your family had a great previous year, and best wishes for this one. God bless and thank you again. -Justin Aldrich.
Davie, here in the Philippines I've mostly been course fishing catching milkfish and tilapia. But sitting around watching a float isn't quite the same as fly fishing, but I have no idea what flies I could tie to even start. Any suggestions?
OMG 6 years where the time going .had to beat this one David I remember looking at this before it gets better with age like a good bottle bush or paddy or whatever takes your fancy. Tight lines from the shores of loughmask
Impeccably tyed , i’m giving up the salmon fishing and going back to trout fishing rivers and lakes ,going to knock up a few of your trout patterns over the Winter months and have a crack a few competitions on in the West of Ireland next year . Many thanks for the uploads my (Fidus Achates) . Very much appreciated . God Bless.
Hi Davie, Just thought you'd like to know that this fly was deadly up at Tarbolton the other day! 5 Fish in one hour, all fell to Your tan caddis! The fish were taking snails when I put it on and instantly got one. My mate and I both got one on the very first cast! Many Thanks for posting this fly and Well done for inventing it! It's deadly! Hope to see you at the Angling Centre in a few weeks! Best Regards, ~David
Love this pattern, I make up a bunch of wings using Softex for the coating and it seems to work great, need to let them set for about 20 minutes before using them. I use the alligator style fly display cubes with the wire extensions to let them dry and store them in pill bottles until ready for use. Love all Dave's videos . Jeff
I am always so shocked when I see a video I haven't seen before. I know I have been watching you tie everyday for 7 months. I learned to tie on your channel and here is another I can't remember seeing before. Anyway, brilliant way to make Caddis wings. I just got some CDC feathers in today, so I will be tying this fly very soon. All the best, Thanks for sharing your expertise. Sean
beautiful Davie absoluteluy beautiful,,doesn`t look like its a manufactured fly at all,,its so very natural looking..well done keep em coming Regards bluezshark
Just so you know, it is easier to make the split thread dubbing loop and do each fly than it is to get CDC into a dubbing brush. It uses lots of feathers and the wire takes something away. Dubbing brushes are great for many fibres and I use them plenty, but CDC did not work out well for me. Thanks Sean
Well I did everything but the very first thing you did. I am going to have to start tying with you so I get everything in. So my excellent looking caddis has no horns. Otherwise it came out pretty good for my first dubbing loop. I have a norvise and I don't dub anything on a loop. I am going to try to make a CDC dubbing brush. I have to get a few more feathers to try that though. I love the norvise and Norm Norlander is wonderful. All the best, Sean
Hi Davie, Good video. How many barbules of feather should there be for the various hook sizes please ? Would you consider doing a few video's just talking us through 'proportions' of materials used for the various hook sizes please?
hi davie great fly must give it a go , i forgot to mention last time i tyed up the cascade and on bout the 10th cast hooked a nice salmon but lost it!!
Davie, Have you tried Tiemco Dry Magic for CDC? It's amazing stuff. It's like Gink for CDC. It's an awesome pretreatment and then I just brush up with Frogs Fannie as needed. Definitely check it out if you haven't already.
Hi Davy. Great fly and video as always. You consistently demonstrate a level of craftsmanship and tying skill that most tyers hope to achieve. I have been using feathers fortified with glue since the '70's when we used "Duco" cement. Bug-bond is a huge improvement. We used to trim the feather to a more conventional shape for Caddis wings. Am I missing something or is it not necessary for this particular fly? Thank you from this fan, avid fly tyer, and author.
very nice fly . congrats. as usual ! can i make a request ? i`m searching for a good was patern made by foam . can you do one ? all your flyes are perfect, i don`t wanna use other patterns, just yours. thx again . regards.
Hi Davie, I have tied these and had great success. But my question, how might I tie this to be more durable and sit slightly higher in the water? Thank you!
Hi Francisco, Here is a list of the materials I used on the Tan Caddis.. Thread, Uni-8/0 Tan Rib, Fine Silver Wire Body, Tan CDC Fibres with a Medium Flat Silver Tinsel Wing, Natural Hen Feather Trimmed and Lightly coated with a Fine Bug-Bond UV Resin Hackle, Light Ginger Hen Thorax, Tan CDC Fibres Horns, Bronze Mallard Fibres
Hi John, I use a Law Vice but unfortunately it's no longer being made, I made a video about it so I have attached a link so that you can see it up close... ua-cam.com/video/3P6MZIrpGG0/v-deo.html All the very best Davie..
Hi dongil123, No it is a different species though a caddis style fly would certainly represent it ok,. When I worked on the river I used to get bitten by them all the time though I'm lucky in a way as I didn't react to the bite for some reason and many would get itchy or swelling around the bite.. All the very best Davie
@@DavieMcPhail Thank you, that clarifies some doubt with certain fly's, could you put me in the right direction when it comes to replicating the natural patterns that we have here in Scotland when it comes to the fishing the dry fly on our local lochs here in the Highlands, again so many thanks again for everything you do.👍😍
Hi Davie, On youtube you are my no 1 source of inspiration, i think i seen close to all your videos and i learn stuff each time. Looking at your videos have boosted my confidence in fly tying. However what i still feel a little bit confused about is hackle, there loads of it and its expensive..So now i use Whiting 100s packs. But looking at your videos i see i need more, what hackles would you suggest as a good base ? Best Regards Thomas
H Davie Watch all your vids and enjoy and learn techniqies etc from all but would like your opinion on which cdc supplier sell the best quality feathers. I'm not fussed on veniard packs but have read about swiss and french suppliers??? Whats your preference the ones used in the vids look good quality.
like this one m8...and over here your timing is good for the hatch started last evening...hope you got the package I sent Davie..had NO notice whether you did or not........Daniel...aka...ArticWolf
Hi Stephen, I've used this method on many patterns over the years and one of the first was a small black beetle and I caught lots of fish on it so I added it to a few other patterns and this is one of them and this fished just as well so it's worth using this method on flies you may like yourself.. All the very best Davie
Hi Andrew, I have tyed a few versions of this fly over the years especially with a deer hair wing and head as you can't go wrong with this colour. All the very best Davie..
Hi fullstrutn, It's not Dougie MacCleans music though I know my son would be very happy to hear that you think it was, it's my son that composed and plays the music on all my videos.. All the very best Davie
Hi Seth Tasscos,, I tye a few flies like this for a couple of friends and they do extremely well in the dark water of some of our lochs, the wild brown trout especially like this addition although I would say it would work without it as well... All the very best Davie...

Hi Davie, I was wondering is the cleg fly or horse fly considered a caddis? thank you and all the best.
Hi dongil123,
No it is a different species though a caddis style fly would certainly represent it ok,. When I worked on the river I used to get bitten by them all the time though I'm lucky in a way as I didn't react to the bite for some reason and many would get itchy or swelling around the bite..

what material to you use Davies tan caddis please thank you William leggate
Davie, just curious--why the tinsel belly? Haven't seen it on any other pattern. Thanks.
Hi Stephen,

Have you ever tried a deer hair head on. Them
Hi Andrew,
I have tyed a few versions of this fly over the years especially with a deer hair wing and head as you can't go wrong with this colour.
All the very best Davie..
Would that happen to be Dougie MacClean music in the beginning?
Hi fullstrutn,
It's not Dougie MacCleans music though I know my son would be very happy to hear that you think it was, it's my son that composed and plays the music on all my videos..
All the very best Davie
Very nice ,I was introduced to Mr. MacCleans music my first trip over there in your beautiful country
Can you please provide a material list? Thanks David!
Yes we do need the material list
question, exactly what is the significance of the silver tinsel?
Hi Seth Tasscos,,
I tye a few flies like this for a couple of friends and they do extremely well in the dark water of some of our lochs, the wild brown trout especially like this addition although I would say it would work without it as well...

Awesome fly
Isn't that wonderful! Not really quite as simple as Davie suggests, but doable if not hurried.
👍🏻✊
Buy some bug bond or UV glue. Once you have it, you'll wonder what you ever did without it.
cool- thanks
