    I really don't think the art of fly tying can rise above this quality. We are so fortunate to have McPhail, Ord-Clarke, and dear old Oliver Edwards on UA-cam. With such macro lens instruction and ready access to so many materials, there has never been a better time to be a fly tyer. And be grateful that these three instructors do not need asinine background twangy guitars or flashy screen antic intros to maintain the attention of their viewers.
    I'm going off to tie a row of these caddis pupa.

    This pattern of yours have been my go to nymph (together with pheasant tail) since you made the original video. It has given me some of my best fishing memories, and has helped me catch big and beautiful trout and arctic char up in the mountains of northern Sweden.
    Thank you for being a huge source of inspiration and thank you for all the fish!

    Wow another great fly. I’m going to have to put away the streamers I’m working on and start tying these. I really like how the yarn and scud back alternate to form the back of the pupa. Very creative. Love these patterns.

    Pure genius bit of tying, the original vid has 420k views plus 11k on this vid so it’s probably the most watched fly tying vid on UA-cam.

    Excellent fly, Davie. I remember seeing the original video, but don't remember you using a bobbin to wind the yarn, which is a nice trick that also works well with materials like Uni-Stretch. I would recommend checking Ebay for lead tape. A few years back I bought a roll of 1/4" wide lead tape for around $14 - which was about 9" in diameter. Apparently, it is marketed to tennis players and golf aficionados for weighting rackets and clubs. If I am wondering about the light transmission qualities of different materials, I shine my resin-curing light on them. Some will surprise you. I have found natural muskrat dubbing to have quite a few fibers which glow a bright blue in UV light.
    Take care, Davie. I hope you can get out and catch a few salmon and trout this fall.

    What a magnificent fly Mr. McPhail. I'm glad you decided to show this pattern again. I do need to get me some lead sheets so I can make better bodied flies. But doesn't lead sheet strips slide around if they are not held by an adhesive?

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  5 років тому

      Hi Terryll Monroe,
      I have never had any problems with the sticky back tape and I have used it for many years..It does make a great body and helps a lot to get the shape that you want in your fly and thank you for the kind words..

    Hi Davie. Everytime I have tried this fly I end up with no room between the yellow yarn/scud and the eyes for the dubbing to fit. I have the same make yarn as in the video and am starting the body right at the back of the hook, what could I be doing wrong?

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  5 років тому

      Hi Steve,
      What I like to do if the yarn gets a bit loose which can spread and cover most of the scud back so what I do is spin the bobbin holder to tighten the yarn up which will help you get a better body..I also at times wax the yarn which will also help the yarn to stay tight as you tye the fly, Iet me know if this helps you..
      All the very best Davie...
