Back 1000 years ago, bishops and queens didn’t even move the way they did today - bishops can only move exactly 2 steps diagonally and queens can only move one step diagonally. There was no pawn double more, no en passant, no castling, and pawns had to promote to queens (which were weak).

What you’re referring to is 象 (Elephant/Bishop) and 士(Servant) from Xiangqi. Firstly, the chessboard is different. The pieces stand at the edges and it’s a 9 by 10 board. There’s mechanics of called 九宮格 (9-squared space) and 河 (River)
The king and the two servants are contained inside the 9 squared space, and the Bishop and Knight can be blocked as The bishop moves from one of the diagonals of the board in the shape of 田. Block the middle and it can’t move that side and it’s called 撠象腳, the knight moves like a Y and block the middle and it’s 撠馬腳. The elephant can’t move across the horizontal river at the middle of the board. There are only 5 pawns, which are one step behind the river, and they capture vertically and move vertically one step. There would be no en passant because it’s a Chinese thing long ago. Pawns after crossing the river they gain the ability to move sideways and capture sideways as well, however they cannot go one step back vertically. Pawns could not promote. Castling isn’t a thing because of the 9-squared space obviously. I know very well of this because I am a native Hongkonger.

@@metexmcrb_ue1363 I am referring to Chaturanga, not Xiangqi.

@@ValkyRiver I see. Chaturanga was invented 1500 years ago, and to be honest, there is no generalisation of chess. Also, they are still Elephants and Servants.

Right you are! This was originally a Shatranj problem from ancient Persia. It happens to only include the pieces that are still available in chess, making it a legal chess puzzle. It is even the oldest legal puzzle for Thai chess, Makruk! There are a handful of other nice Shatranj puzzles like this which didn't include the Vizier or Elephant, or requiring a pawn promotion to a Queen (only the Vizier was allowed), and some other famous Shatranj puzzles were adapted for modern pieces, like Diliram's Mate. See Murray's "History of Chess" for hundreds more Shatranj problems from antiquity.
