50 years of racism -- why silence isn’t the answer | James A. White Sr. | TEDxColumbus

  • Bringing reflections and the reality of race relations in USA, Jim White Sr. provides a lens that goes back 53 years from his first experience with discrimination, coupling it with how he's struggling to provide counsel to his grandsons facing the same bias. This talk was the first time he's shared this provocative and heartbreaking story in public after his decision to be silent no more.
James A. White Sr. is a Master Training Management Consultant and Executive Coach. As owner and operator of Performance Consulting Services, a business performance training, development, consulting and coaching firm in Columbus, Ohio, James is dedicated to sharing his experiences, insight, enthusiasm and passion with all people.
With over 25 years of corporate, K-12/College education, and government experience, James is committed to the training and development of individuals, groups and organizations. He has conducted training consulting in over 34 school districts throughout the United States of America. In addition to his formal degreed education from MATA Drafting College, Capital University and The Ohio State University, James has acquired over 30 corporate certifications in performance training programs/initiatives. He has also accumulated tens of thousands of hours of platform delivery experience in the classroom environment. To date, James has successfully trained over 250,000 thousand people.
As a result of his education, entrepreneurship and employment history with the Xerox Corporation, Wang Laboratories, Digital Equipment Corporation and the United States Air Force, James has a rich array of diverse business experiences, which positions him with a wealth of unique and valuable resources, skills and success tools. He is known for his humorous, yet real world and impactful, informative training style.
James has recently co-authored a book on the topic of diversity, culture, consciousness, inclusion and integrity entitled: A Better World: Understanding How Your Personal Operating System Affects Culture, Diversity & Inclusion.
Jim’s philosophy is; once you put your mind to it (with the appropriate tools, skills and resources), you can overcome any of life’s many obstacles and challenges… As a 17- year-old inner city, high school dropout with the disability of Dyslexia, he entered the U.S. Air Force, received his G.E.D and served his Country as an Air Policeman and Top Security Draftsman.
James is devoted and extensively involved with his family, student education and community health and stability. In his commitment to the growth, development and advancement of all people, Jim has inspired people of all races, genders and backgrounds to take the steps necessary to achieve their goals and objectives. He truly believes we all are our brother and sister’s keeper. The success of America lies in the hands of each individual U.S.A. citizen. Success will only be achieved through access, opportunity, equity and collective and shared responsibility. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Each individual must develop their skills, talents, strengths and passion in the achievement of performance excellence.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I wouldn't call "lacking the luxury of being angry" a statement of powerlessness. Why do we get angry? Because we feel powerless and think expressing our anger will empower us.
Problem solvers don't get angry and stew. They work towards solutions.

Racism is never going to be dead, just like murder rate will never go down to zero. However, racism is not as bad as what the media wants you to believe. So the point is why dwell on something you can't control, why not move on and make something better of yourself? Why is it that every other minority race (including the late arrivals of Africans and West Indies) is doing better than then "descendants of slaves".

Hopefully your parents will truly listen to you and actually help end your nightmare reality. They can start by: Putting you in another school IN A PLACE WHERE OTHER PEOPLE LOOK LIKE YOU AND SHARE YOUR CULTURE! I've never understood why anyone would ever force their children to "STRUGGLE" through racism. Especially in America!!! Maybe moving to a better state for your religion or ethnicity would be better. You should talk to them and let them know "WE DON'T HAVE TO STRUGGLE LIKE THIS! There is a world of countries that offer a better life for us." It's not hard to just do it, sell everything, Get Out!, Live Free, & FINALLY BE HAPPY. If they refuse to be free, K-12 homeschooling will make things a little bit easier. Sorry your suffering kid. Being peaceful, hanging with a good group of friends, telling guidance counselor, martial arts, & Prayer helps too. Good luck to you.

Good on you for sharing this! I’m also on the receiving end of this on a daily basis where I live, which is very sad in this day and age. I fell deep into depression beacuse of this and the fear that my young son can fall victim to racism. The profound learned helplessness is very stubborn to get rid of. It can ruin your life. It’s a predominantly white country and there’s a resurgence of strong racism towards Asians or anyone who looks like Chinese regardless of how long you’ve been here, contributed to the society, live this place and yearn to positively contribute more to this country! I’ve decided to pick myself up and when anything like this happens to me I will bless their soul and stay compassionate towadrs all the haters. They are the ones who are hurting themselves not us!

"Insanity", exactly. We must have the awareness to realize the situation we're in at all times - my sister, my brother, you're not dealing with an individual being unreasonable, you're dealing with insanity. The reality is that we "don't have the luxury of being angry," and it's not that we shouldn't push back but that we shouldn't want to push back. Why? Here's an analogical question for you: Why in the world would you want to provoke a psychopath in the moment you're confronted by one? It's a waste of your time, and there's a high chance that it'll be a waste of your precious life too. Instead, apply mindfulness, like our elder right here - Mr. White Sr. Just look at the level of composure he embodies!

What an excellent assessment. It shows how racism is accepted and promoted by many Americans. I agree also that the solution is to NOT get enraged and react in an adversive manner; but to appeal to all decent Americans to stand up against these crimes. We also have to shatter the notion that police are always right and stop the blue wall of silence that protects them when they are wrong.

Love the speech. It deserves a lot more views for sure!
The weird thing is, from an evolutionary viewpoint, the whole term "racism" doesn't make any sense. There are no "races" among humans. We are all just one race. One race, with different skin colors. There's not 1% difference in our DNA. It's all just a social concept. Old thinking. We need to get rid of it. There's no room for it in modern society.
Sadly, that's not the case. Racism is on the rise in my country. The nationalist political party in my country, is on the rise. It's down right scary to see people being so biased. Ignorance at it's best...
