This is what really ticks me off as a tech enthusiast. People out here want all this technology but don’t want to learn about it. There are police departments making people think your information is going to be stolen.

I don't understand how an agency like a Police department can make statements like this without first vetting the information that they are going to circulate.
Thank you for showing each condition a iPhone could be in. I just got done explaining to my mom that this is a secure feature. You showed the other day in your Apple News vlog with the phones unlocked but not with them locked, glad you showed all conditions. So if you left your phone on a table at a family gathering and walked away for a minute, no one can get your information. Thanks and I depend on your channel for my Apple info, great work
It really bothers me that misconceptions and assumptions become viral without anyone asking or checking or thinking for more than “hey this is trendy let me take it as fact and spread it too!” However the fact that there was information you felt needed to be blurred before accepting means it should be tweaked that the card is blurred unless you both hit the accept button! Also there needs to be a red decline button because not many people would understand what a swipe up or X is for!
Yes, maybe they shouldn’t show the number right away, but people will know this transfer is about to take place as the phone will vibrate and the animation show. If it is locked nothing shows. Definitely a way overblown situation that went viral for no reason.
Thank you for addressing this and clearing up the confusion. I didn't think Apple would make it so easy to share info without safe guarding it. I shared this video and hope it goes more viral than the misinformation about the new feature.
It’s just old people who don’t know how things works … based on assumptions it’s quite hard explaining to them even if you make a video like this … But we here to learn .. love your videos
The fact that Apple has so many “hidden options” seems to be an oversight to me though! So many things are done with gestures or pressing a button during a sequence not everyone could know about it! Just like the sleep button to send a call to voice mail!
This is an excellent video and thank you for posting. One thing I will say, Apple should have another button there that says "Ignore Request" in addition to being able to swipe up to ignore. Many times I mis-press many items on my iPhone, and I can see how some people including myself when trying to swipe up might accidentally press the Receive Only or the Share button. So for me I'll leave it off, but this video really showed how it works and definitely very helpful. Thanks Aaron.
Thank you for this video. My husband freaked out when this update came out and he found out that other people could possibly still his information from his iPhone. I tried to tell him that you said that this feature was safe but he still feels that this feature is not. Oh well at least I now know it’s safe.
You explained it perfectly. I’m really glad that you made a video like this. Thank you. Its crazy how people misunderstand things and talk like that about apple.
Very well explained. I get so mad when people say that this is such a security risk setting. What happen they heard about (bring devices together) so they did and it worked but they failed to realized well both our phones was unlocked and that’s why it worked. Instead they wanted to give Apple a bad name for no reason. Sorry had to rant a little.
Thanks for the information, I am an HR Manager for an A/C company and all our techs use iPhones and just wanted to make sure that this process is secured enough for them to use.
My mom sent me a photo saying that police are warning people about this feature, so I turned it off. Immediately after, I did a little more research and it really didn’t make sense for Apple to introduce a feature where people can just take your contact info without your permission. I had a feeling it was bs😅
I can’t prove it but when this feature first launched I demonstrated it to a coworker and I got their phone number. My phone was unlocked but not on the Home Screen theirs was unlocked and on a webpage. My device is an iPhone 13 Pro Max theirs is an earlier model idk which one but bother were running at least iOS 17 or 17.0.1. I took a screenshot right after the devices shared information I don’t remember it asking me or them to allow the sharing of contact information. I bring up the screenshot because there wasn’t an option to save any information.
Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't you blur out the phone number on the contact poster? If that is the case, someone can bring their phone close to yours, get the contact card to pop up, and then they have your name and phone number on the screen, all you need to do is take a screenshot or write it down no?
Technically they could, but you will know this is happening as the phone vibrates or gives a lot of haptic feedback and shows the visuals. You also have to bring it quite close and it doesn't work when locked. Apple should blur the contact info at least until you tap share, but very few would just allow this as it is blatantly obvious.
This is very informative, thanks dude. Coool … 🤙🏻 Several weeks ago I upgraded my iPhones to 17.1.1 and since I always carry both phones with me, I started noticing this weird hummm noise every now and then. I texted Apple Support and though the person on the other side remains courteous and patient as usual, it took more than 45 minutes before the issue got resolved. By the way, the ultimate solution to it is to turn off the ‘bringing devices together’ as you mentioned in this video 😂😂
Since I updated to the latest WatchOS developer software I’ve noticed that the battery on Apple Watch 7isn’t lasting as long as the previous software did I used to get nearly 2 days but only getting 1 day from it.
The first time i saw the headline to be aware of the security risk of namedrop, I figured it was fearmongering especially with the framing that it should be a concern on your children's iphones. When i read the comments, lots of comments mention that apple should have made this feature off by default. If they did that, this feature, along with airdrop would be useless, as it isn't seamless to access for the people who want to use it.
When I first started using a smartphone and learning the ins & outs I didn't find in manuals. Imagine my surprise when I discovered I can use Bluetooth for something other than phone conversations? I can transfer files with it!
When you had one phone locked and another unlocked, it looked like the locked one still showed your picture before it went to the passcode screen. Does it also show your phone number right before the passcode screen pops up?
Aaron, and it's just to shame that we have scrupulous People out there that will try and do anything.I appreciate all you do with keeping us updated Great work as usual. Thanks so much for sharing. ✌️💯
Thank you, Aaron, Spanish news Telemundo misled info on this this past week, and I was so mad… is like someone from the Android side tried to misled Apple
I initially saw it as a warning for parents. But I look at it this way, if a creep is close enough to your child to hold their iPhone to your child’s, there’s already a problem.
This explanation was clear and very helpful. However, parents may need to know how to disable the feature on phones that their children might use. Also, there might need to be a way to indicate that the phone is owned by a minor, and then the default would be OFF for features like Name Drop. Also, I am curious as to how a blind person would use the Name Drop feature. Are there any Accessibility tips?
Thank you so much for this video. I was just reading about how "dangerous" this feature is. Thank you for educating me about as I'll be getting an iphone XR soon.
This still isn’t clear, particularly because your accounts have the same name. Will someone see my name by default, but not get my contact details unless I approve? I wouldn’t want strangers to learn my name.
This, exactly. Who's picture and contact information is displayed when I put devices close together? If it's the other's person, I can still memorize the number / name, perhaps take a screenshot while it's still being displayed?
There is a big issue about iPhones green screen issue in India ..iPhone users are unable to update the latest iOS software…can you talk about this please
@@matthewburnoI have an easy solution for this. For your Apple ID display name, go to the empty text site, copy the empty text box (unicode invisible to most devices), paste the unicode text in & BAM! No risks of being doxxed & outed by your phone.
I'm a little skeptical about the ability to get the phone number without any confirmation (it just shows up on screen), but not enough to turn off the feature.
What was the info blurred i mean they could see sum about you (name/phone number ) even before accepting it even if you cancel it they could simply take a screenshot
Wait, wouldn't it still be a slight concern if someone can get your name and picture just by having your phone on your lockscreen even if you haven't said to transfer your contact info, or am I misunderstanding? I did notice that the locked phone showed the contact name and image before bringing up the unlock prompt, which seems bad if someone is filming that phone and if that's that user's info, thus allowing the other person to know whose phone it is without even needing to unlock it. I thought you had to go into the People app to share your contact like that, it would be a lot better than just being able to walk up to phones like this.
While there is a lot of misleading and fear-mongering happening I think a lot of people are simply cautious to not even share their name with strangers let alone the other info.
What information is sent? Just your phone number, your e-mail, both, everything in your contact information. This might sound silly but I’ve watched about a dozen videos on. This topic and no one mentions where the information is coming from and how much information.
Once you accept then the information is sent. It's anything in your contact card. So if you go into the contacts app and then tap on your name, it would be any information in that that you want to send
And this is why I prefer Apple over android, because android is not secure like is with Apple that’s just my opinion, but totally agree that this method is secure 100% and people don’t take the time to review or even look into the settings of the device itself
I’ve already been dealing with convincing people the information they were told is wrong but some people are hard headed. I told them they can turn it off if they won’t use the feature but the whole idea that your information can be stolen is ridiculous and even showed them how it works and why it’s even a feature. There is one danger to it. Lack of option to provide fake info. If someone forces you to share your data with them NameDrop seems like a good way to make sure you share genuine personal info. Not like writing your phone number on a napkin.
