The Cheapest Most Powerful Fighter in Existence

  • In the heart of the Philippines, the rugged tropical landscape echoed with the thunderous roar of engines. Two FA-50 Golden Eagles, South Korea's latest fighter, streak across the horizon on their way to their objective: a hostile base full of radical Islamic insurgents.
Equipped with tactical datalink, EL/M-2032 radar, state-of-the-art HUD, and sensors, the Philippine Golden Eagles locate the enemy and attack with precision and lethality.
The Eagles swiftly scan the ground below, and before the insurgents can race for cover, they drop their bomb ordnance. The Mach-capable aircraft, honoring their American F-16 legacy, leave a trail of destruction behind and turn around, prepared for a second run.
When they do, mayhem takes hold of the insurgents, with the Golden Eagles’ powerful 20-millimeter Gatling guns and FFAR rockets turning fortifications into rubble.
In the blink of an eye, the FA-50s destroy the Islamist strongholds and return to their base, preserving the Philippines from a rising threat.
The Golden Eagle ushers a new decade of affordable yet highly effective aircraft for nations with a smaller military budget, costing around 40 million apiece, representing almost one-third of the price of a modern American or European fourth-generation fighter aircraft.

Well, title and political statements aside, some very good description and breakdown of the development program, aircraft and its history. This truly is an amazing “bang-for-your-buck” aircraft. Once again, the Koreans have demonstrated their amazing capability to start off with an American design/technology and adapt, convert and even in some ways improve it to meet specific needs, including cost and availability. They did the same with their Aegis KDX-III destroyers. With what appeared to be inspiration from the American Arleigh Burke, they built arguably the best cruiser ever utilizing American AEGIS, VLS, RAM, and COGAG technology. And if they can ever rid themselves of their current NK/CCP appeasing government, their CVX program could result in an equally amazing cousin of the Royal Navy’s QE twins! ROK should be proud and we are lucky to have such Allies!

      1. They bought F-35A, and won't be able to afford to buy F-35Cs
      2. Their Boramae fighter doesn't have plans for a STOVL variant.
      3. They don't have the experience nor the will to pour the money into developing a CATOBAR carrier.
      4. They only have plans to build a single CVX.
      5. Their GDP is less than half of Japan's and they already spend more than their percentage of GDP on defense than Japan does.

This is a humble but worth-the-money airplane. In process is the upgrade for the AESA radar and medium-range A2A missiles (Meteor and AIM-120) and the price is going up. But still the hourly operating cost is well under 10,000 USD. (several thousand dollars). Good for patrol and Close Air Support where you have the air defense systems (in a NOT-contested airspace).
One interesting info about the maximum speed.
It is 1,837 km/h. And Koreans say it is Mach 1.5. This means they have divided the at-altitude (typically 50,000 feet) speed with at-sea-level sound speed(340 m/s), making the Mach number lower.
The US or Europe calculates the Mach number of the maximum speed by dividing the max speed at altitude with the at-altitude sound speed(around 280 m/s).
If you calculate the max speed of FA-50 by the 'normal way', it is Mach 1.83, not Mach 1.50.
These Korean guys like to play low-profile. Perhaps because they do not want to look 'too aggressive' toward China.
Same with KF-21 Boramae. The max speed is 2,234 km/h. Koreans say it is Mach 1.8. But if you divide by the at-altitude sound speed, the Mach number becomes 2.22. Quite fast. Enough for a powerful interceptor.
I suspect this 'number-lowering game' is happening with regard to the max takeoff weight, too. As for the US fighters, they say that the real MTOW is just above 80% of the brochure number. But with Korean fighters, (FA-50 and KF-21. The latter is undergoing 2,000 test flights) the brochure number is the real one. 6 ton internal fuel and 7.7 ton armaments simultaneously, (totaling about 13.7 tons) for KF-21.
Let us see how far they can go.. (I happen to be a Korean.^^)

Modern air combat of today and the future more relies more on stealth, ESM, ECM, networking, future drone escorts, situational awareness and all connected into the weapon system, helmet and glass cockpit.
Kinematics are getting a little less influential today combat.
If the fighter is not stealth, the fighter needs extensive ESM, ECM just to survive, like being escorted by aircraft like the EA-18G Growler to carry out electronic warfare and SEAD.

Regarding the issue of perception on the Polish FA 50
We buy them mainly for air policing and pinpoint attacks on ground targets maby for CAS/JTAC. The military air force was given a certain amount of money to spend and they thought about what they would buy for it and it turned out that the FA-50 fits, also the M-346 is troublesome they have a low readiness in our country, pilot training is important. We think
about the integration of brimstone and meteor, until the introduction of the AIM-260, it would paradoxically be the most dangerous aircraft in BVR that we currently have and a nice cost/effect for scratching off armoured divisions
between barrel and rocket artillery zones.

Actually, the S. Korean Air Force only operates 60 FA-50 with the other version being advanced trainers and the TA-50 lead-in tactical trainers. The ROKAF, because of NK, operates the F-16C/Ds, F-15Es, and F-35A as its main force with the FA-50 being used by airfields close to the DMZ for scramble missions and close air support. Almost the same role as the F-5E/F that are gradually being phased out of service (a handful of American-made F-5E/Fs will all be deactivated by 2025 with the Korean-built KF-5E/Fs that started entering service in the mid-1980s, shouldering on till the end of the 2020s)

On March 8, 2024, March 8, KAI’s board of directors greenlit a substantial investment of 90.9 billion won to develop a single-seat version of the FA-50 alongside an autonomous aerial vehicle (AAV) project. A portion of this investment, totaling 35.6 billion won is allocated specifically for the creation of a single-seat FA-50, responding to the escalating global interest in such models. This initiative aims to broaden product offerings, tap into new markets, and accommodate persistent requests from existing clientele for a solo-seater variant. Projected roll out date of the single sit version is 2026 or first half of 2027.

For a long time I've thought we (USA) need something between our super expensive, huge payload, highly advanced, F-16, F-15, F-22, F35 Strike fighters and fighter bombers. They are messing around with the Super Tucano and the AT-180 SkyWarden. And while they are great A/C, perfect for recon, counter insurgency, strikes in an un-contested environment they are still "Light Attack" and far from a "light fighter". In a contested air space they have zero chance of survivability. The FA-50 does have that survivability with its 1.5 Mach ability (F-35 has 1.6 Mach capability reportedly). It fits a role somewhere in the middle, between a "budget" light attack and our big boy Gucci fighters. Using an F-35 or F-22 to take out some bad guys in a mud hut seems like overkill when you could send one or two of these in at a fraction of the price. And unlike the Super Tucano or SkyWarden, they can be in and out in a fraction of the time. Maybe that role is for drones now?

As mentioned in the video, for smaller nations with limited budgets or those that don't have an enemy entity right next door the FA-50 is a credible supersonic fighter that can intercept intruding airplanes, conduct CAS, and train next-generation pilots without breaking the bank. Also, they are good low-tier planes to augment more cutting-edge true fighters in a high-low mix. No need to send up a F-22 to intercept a passenger plane that veered off course by mistake or shoot down a Chinese "weather" balloon....

Among the contracts between Lockheed Martin and KAI are as follows.
FA-50 has a constraint that it cannot exceed the latest F-16 specification.
So the FA-50 has its limits.
However, the FA-50 is a cost-effectiveness and has a full role to play.
Very powerful as a 5th generation pilot training, proximity support, and small multi-roll fighter.
It must be a very useful aircraft for both training and practice.
    Armed forces are also evolving.
    In Block 2
    AIM-9 Sidewinder
    AIM-7 Sparrow
    AGM-65 Maverick
    IRIS-T
    KEPD 350K-2
    AIM-120 AMRAAM
    It will be armed.
What is unusual is that the Korean-made AESA Radar is better than the US-made Radar with performance limits.
However, due to the inherent limitations of FA-50, it seems to be impossible to mount.
    However, KF-21 has no constraints.
This is because Korea has developed core technologies such as AESA Radar, IRST, EOTGP, and RF Jammer.
The interior armament is also under development and the MUM-T system is also under development.
We're testing to control three drones with wingmen
It is being developed as a multi-purpose fighter with more than five generations at the same time as the development of internal armoured windows.
The AESA radar developed by Korea is a gallium nitride material and is powerful.
It is currently used in Korean Aegis destroyers, M-SAMs, and L-SAMs.
Gallium oxide materials that are much more powerful than gallium nitride materials are also being developed.
    Korea has strong EMP technology.
    RF-Jammer is also very powerful.
It will reach NGJ-MB performance enough.
IRST is currently on board the frigate and in use.
EO-TGP is already applied to FA-50.
Core equipment is constantly being upgraded with the development of new technologies.
KF-21 Boramae is the name of a falcon when its young is raised for hunting.
Boramae is called the Little Raptor, but in the near future, it will evolve into the fifth and sixth generation fighter jets that will shine on itself.
I hope you will pay a lot of attention to KF-21.

The oroginal I complained about was "The cheapest yet most powerful fighter in existence", which in my - certainly flawed - understanding of English means: The cheapest and still most powerful". I think they couldnt have picked a better fighter Concept than the F16 ( still my all time Favorite fighter Aircraft)

Not as lethal as top tier fighter jets, but FA-50 can do most of the daily jobs and scrambles that F-16 fighter jet can do with way cheaper money. Reliable and easy to maintain, so high availability. True work horse of modern fighter, modernized spiritual successor of Northrop F-5E Tiger II.

Just a side note, the GE-F404 does NOT produce 22,000 lbs of thrust. No Golden Eagle has this type of power.
But everything else is pretty spot on. Keep going. Liked and Subscribed

Plus, it is unusual for strike aircraft to make more than one pass against a target where there many be manpads. Unlikely they'd turn around for a second go at the target - yeah, it's artistic license by the narrator but "One pass, haul ass" is usually the tactic of expensive strike aircraft.

@@staubsauger2305 he was correct with that one, the Maute ISIS group had no manpads. They tried shooting the planes with .50 cal rifles which had very little chance of hitting.

@@michaeld1170 Thanks for the info. However even with 50 cals strike pilots always worry about the "magic BB" taking you out. Hence, strike plan on one pass only except if you have better intelligence (or SF/FAC on the ground).

Minor nit pick, cost of a F-16 is about 63 mil and the FA-50 40 mil div it and get .63 and some change to make the math better bump it to .66 repeating which is it costing about 2/3

The T-50 looks like if an F-16 and a F-18 hooked up the T-50 would be their offspring. Basically an F-16 with F-18 inlets and wing root leading edges.

These aircraft heavily use American and Israeli technology in engines, control systems, and weapons so there are countries like Iran and Uzbekistan who will not be allowed to purchase them. This plane lost out to Aermacchi M346 to supply Israel, Argentina, and Singapore.

Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) is very attractive for many countries, LCA using propeller or jet engine, lower price and lower maintenance than fighter jet like F-16, very effective if your enemies don't have advance anti air capability.

You must consider the overall plan for US military air superiority. With geographically important allies needing aircraft to defend themselves, the FA50 can be used to initiate the war plan. In a large scale war effort, the US will count on assistance from allies to fill voids in the Air Force inventory.
