winter in metal
All of them 🤘🏻
All of them
"Barber of Seville" was my favorite, that number has been a brain-worm of mine for decades ... now I finally have a "jazzed up" version to groove to! Thanks, Charles!
Appassionata in metal 🤘🤘🤘
Can you do the opposite? Play some metal music as classic music? It would be amazing! Possibly a lot harder though.
That could be interesting!
@@CharlesBerthoud epic idea!
In Fear and Faith has symphonic/piano covers of several of their songs. Betraying the Martyrs has an orchestral cover of their song "liberate me ex inferis"
@@CharlesBerthoud Maybe a cool challenge episode with @TwoSetViolin? Would be pretty rad.
Have you checked out apocalyptica playing Metallica? its solid for sure.
Metal and classical work SO well together. There's a reason why many metal bands have orchestras in their songs.
Exactly….metallica’s S&M being an obvious example.
Ohhh I LOVE No Leaf Clover off that album
@@Kiwi_Tea Same
Okay but you can't tell me that Vivaldi is not naturally metal
Vivaldi was metal before it was cool.
"you guys will love it, but your kids will bang their heads to it"
Vivaldi was metal before his parents were even born.
Vivalidis Four Seasons was always metal. And "Summer" was always the heaviest of the metals.
At vance toca verano presto de Vivaldi
Spring's got a sick guitar solo tho
The Uli Jon Roth´s version is my favourite one.
shostakovich string quartet no. 8 Allegro molto and Dvorak Symphony no 9 4th movement Allegro con fuoco are also pretty metal
I mean shit, the musicians playing the classical version were head banging
Everyone knows that Vivaldi was hands down the most metal of the classical composers.
More than paginini?
@@josephrodriguez5320 Way more. More than even Beethoven...
@@joerghevieras1923 Paganini was more Rock 'N Roll, Beethoven was Hard Rock. They would be famous rock stars if alive today. They certainly lived the life.
@@joerghevieras1923 Disagree. Even Tchaikovsky wasn't more metal than Bethoven
Vivaldi was Baroque.
I love how you labeled them "classical" and "metal" so we could tell them apart.😆
no shit
classical rhythm and speeds are really a metal kinda vibe or is it metal rhythm and speed are really a classical vibe XD
Man. . . I could never be that good in playing the bass. . . 😐
I still want to hear Mozart's requeim in metal. That's some dark shit.
So dark
It makes me cry
Mozart was the OG rockstar.......
check out the track dies irae (amadeus) by dark moor!
Or chopin's funeral march
Well, yes, I mean, there's a reason Apocalyptica exists. Their gigs at concert halls are also very aesthetically pleasing. I mean the show, yes, but also the crowd :D Metalheads in their best clothes and classical aficionados in their best suits, mingling. Looks awesome.
A lot of Vivaldi's compositions do feel like early (very early!) steps towards the rhythm, speed, and power of metal. He often pushed the instruments to their limits in a way that was ahead of his time. Check out his composition La Follia (The Madness) sometime--I've heard it described as "heavy wood".
La folia is by Corelli
@Matt Dursse Cool, I didn’t know that
@@Dany715gd The Vivaldi version is the metal one.
@@Dany715gd La follia was a traditional iberic/arabic folk melody-chord progression, and a whole bunch of composers wrote variations on it, including Vivaldi (the best version imo) corelli, Marin, Lully, Mozart, Tarrega, and many more.
More people, especially metal heads, should know Vivaldi's work. The man could shred before shredding was a thing, if he had an amp and some pedals, it would be the gnarliest shit on the planet
My favorite classical "metal" piece is Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata 3rd movement. Maybe you've done this already but if not, definitively worth looking into. Thanks Charles for the great content.
Yeah that one's great, already did it though! Just look up "If Beethoven Were A Metal Bassist" and you'll see a thumbnail of me pretending to be an angry Beethoven.
@@CharlesBerthoud are you telling me that you didn't actually get Beethoven for the thumbnail?
This a very typical example of classical gone metal. It's cool but is overdone in my opinion and not as exciting.
Made Tina famous.
I think he did it that piece better than Davie504, both are increidible bassists, but Charles Blowed my mind in a epic way with that one
These were all killer riffs.
Fun fact; metalhead and people who listen to classical music have very comparable brain activities whilst listening.
explains why i enjoy listening to both
Source?
When I was a kid, I started liking classical music thanks to metal, and Accept's "Metal Heart" in particular.
I know exactly what you mean. Love that song in particular
Accept!!! Yes. Bringing me back!
As a lifetime metal guy, I have always been more influenced by classical than any other type of music. Rock on Charles!
You are a classical guy identifying as a metal guy to make Classical Music more appealing
I'm 52, and a confirmed metal-head for over 40 of them. Most of the guys and gals my age I've known who love Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, DIO, etc. also enjoy many classical pieces. A professor from Heriot-Watt University found that fans of classical and fans of heavy metal have nearly identical psychological profiles.
yeah i would say classical is the closest thing to metal
my parents : oh your into classical music ?
me age 6 watching Tom and Jerry chasing with classical music : uhhh yea.
Heh I have a treat for you, in that case:

Possibly the most metal classical compositions of all time. Royer would have been a superstar metal guitarist if he was born today. Unlike Beethoven and Mozart, who I think would remain classical musicians if born today, I think Royer would LITERALLY be a rockstar.
Dave Mustaine always said that if Vivaldi was around today (and was a metalhead) he would definitely be in Megadeth -- which also explains why the Vivaldi tracks in the video were the ones that sounded the most metal.
I love how Mustaine's my fav metal composer and Vivaldi's my fav classical composer
And Dave loves Vivaldi
With all possible respect towards mr. Mustaine - WTF? Vivaldi would need no Megadeth (to be more precise - Mustaine). He would be another living legend with the best musicians possible around him. I even dare to presume Dave himself would be just a session rythm guitarist in some Vivaldi's band/project/record. A happy session rythm guitarist, by the way, and, IMHO, this scenario seems more accurate and realistic. Once again - with all possible respect towards mr. Mustaine.
Lol what?
@@sergeykvakin9605 truth 💯
@@sergeykvakin9605 bruhhh chill
Dammit, now I want to hear you play the _entire_ Appassionata on metal bass.
through fire and flames
I appreciate your contribution to people understanding there's more going on with metal than 'noise.' As someone who's been playing bass for 20+ years (and always been a metalhead.) Thanks for doing the hard work.
The "singing" with annoying vocals destroys a good portion of metal for us non-metalheads. Even if the underlying music is top quality not everybody can tolerate that shouting. Then those lyrics, the concepts of metal is not everybody's cup of tea. If the vocals could sohehow get detached from the metal music then probably 15% of the music would become attractive to non-metalheads. The other 85% is still trash.
The guys from Children of Bodom did a great rendition of Summer on guitar. RIP Alexi
That was just 🤘
Most of CoB's early material is this pile of incredible neo classical bangers.
Majority of european metal bands was influence by classical music.
RIP, he was a genius
@@TigSu yes
I'd definitely love to see "if Chopin was a metal bassist" at some point. I always love your metal bass arrangements of classical music! ♥
Revolutionary Etude would slap…
I'd love to hear Mr Berthoud try the "Winter Wind" etude. It's got some amazing runs that would sound interesting on the bass.
Winter Wind would be nice
@@LogicalQ I was going to say that!
@@eliasmochan ocean Etude would also make for a nice two handed tapping exercise on a 6 string bass.
A South African band 'Omega Limited', early 1970's, had a hit with a Tchaikovsky piece played in heavy rock genre. Awesome skill you have developed with your talent, thank you.
What amazes me most is not that he's able to play so intricately, it's that he learns these insane pieces so well just to record them for a video and probably never play them again.
It would take me months just to perfect a few bars of what he throws out like it's nothing at all.
🤘🏼💙🔥
This is why I love Charles. Man's can span all genres of music and he's not just a good bassist, but a great musician too. Makes me want to play bass, but I can barely play the ukulele. Lol
Personally he makes me want to saw my bass in half. Cos I feel I'll never be as good as him
@@Attackonmuffin wrong mindset lol
@@jesse-pikman yeah I'm just assuming that if I keep it up ima get that good in however many years
Lovely. I've long felt Vivaldi's The Four Seasons was essentially the first thrash metal. Having said that, I think I liked your rendition of the Rabbit of Seville best.
I see you're a man of culture.
Hey, what's opera, doc?
That's the only name i will remember it by.
Vivaldi was definitely a metal guy.
The guys in the orchestra are all smirking because they can see a smart arsed grey cartoon rabbit. C'mon, we all were!
Hoooly Moly! I love that you've done this bro. When I was a teenager in the 90's we called Vivaldi heavy-metal violin and Beethoven heavy-metal keys and loved it all. It's fantastic to see the younger generation today picking up on the loose metal of classical composers!
As a newly born metalhead, this is awesome. It doesn't matter if I'm listening to classical, bluegrass, country, rock, metal, or any other genre; if it has the rhythm and harmonics--as you said--I will jam to it.
And not to forget the Symphonic Metal sub-genre. It is one that has been growing slowly but gaining influence through the work of bands like Nightwish, Within Temptation and Epica. Even some more commercial bands are joining in. For instance Metallica released their second such album (S&M 2) which came out last year. It is well worth checking out and features a classical (upright) bassist doing a version of Anaesthesia Pulling Teeth.
Deep purple expremented classical rockmusic in the early 70s.
Apocalyptica is another good one. Three guys on cellos and a drummer rocking out to metal is something I never thought I'd see, but I absolutely love it.
That list is good but sorely lacking in Dmitry Shostakovich. "The composer remained in Leningrad during the start of the Siege. This was also the time when he began composing his famous Leningrad Symphony (1942). It was performed by the Leningrad Philarmonic and transmitted all around by loudspeakers while the city was being occupied by German troops". Pretty metal. As was much of his music.
Can we get a full album of this! I want it on spotify now for work, finishing tasks doing anything through out my day… actually i dont want it i need it!
Somehow the classical of Summer is MORE metal than what the metal version did.
He should take it at an even faster tempo.
He's certainly capable.
More energy on the downbeats too.
Also...
Even more distinctly metal classical music than Vivaldi:

There were no symphonic qualities in the metal version, it sounded to much like funk, whereas the classical one retains the symphonic quality of a lot of metal
For some reason this is how I hear some of these songs in my head. Especially Summer, that’s such a banger!
I said it multiple times and I'll say it thousands more: Vivaldi SHREDS that violin
Children of Bodom already did an amazing metal version of Vivaldi’s Seasons. It’s amazing and showed how metal he was.
The conductor for Barber of Seville was straight vibin’
Beautiful metal performed flawlessly on 4 strings piano! Charles is amazing!
I definitely recommend Necrophagist solo's to anyone who is a fan of neoclassical metal. To this day I don't think anyone has pulled it off as well as Mohammed Suicmez.
Fermented Offal Discharge solo is just the best guitar solo ever
@@AgustinRodriguez-Bdm yeah I have to agree, shame it has such a nasty song title haha
I highly agree!!! Necrophagist is soo fucking amazing.
I mean, I keep hearing about "classically trained" metal musicians, so this actually makes perfect sense to me. I always thought Beethoven's Eine Kline Nacht Music's third movement was basically metal on a piano. This is to say nothing of later composers like Rachmaninoff. And Vivaldi has a special place in my heart as I learned to play most of 4 Seasons on the violin as a teen, while only really coming to love metal as an older adult. LOVED that comparison. Thanks!
You're probably thinking of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata (which is indeed metal as hell). "Eine kleine Nachtmusik" is by Mozart, and its third movement is very playful (like most of Mozart).
@@3_of_886 You are absolutely correct, thank you!
First metal composition was done by Bach, Toccata and Fugue in d minor.
I used to be in a ensemble quintet with 4 guitars and bass and we would play classical songs as true to the originals as possible with a metal flair- this absolutely re-ignites my love of the blend of sounds! Keep it up dude!
LOVE everything about this!!! Appasionata was my fave because i was unfamiliar with the original. Though the funniest moment was actually the conductor for Barber of Seville who loves his life.
A. Awesome! Not just the transcribing for bass guitar, but to actually play it!
B. Why isn't like a bass guitar / cello Frankenstein's Monster Bass a thing which exists? LOL Throw in a drum set made of kettle drums and an electric violin. Accompany both sides of the coin with traditional instruments and modern electrics to round out the sound of the orchestra, and you have a seriously amazing concert in the making just breathing new life into old music!
C. Also, I kind of want to see that stodgy pianist guy rocking a guitar like you do. I wonder if it's possible to tux-tail bang. (Like headbanging meets twerking?)
I would love and buy a classical metal album! More of this would be great.
I like how appassionata just evoked another eargasm ... the metal version that is. Awesome, thanks!
2:17 is my favorite moment. A descent into the bass like a descent into hell.
If you made a whole album of these, I'd totally buy it!
When you look at a lot of famous metal guitarists and bands like Kirt Hammett they were trained in classical music in college. You can clearly hear it in their playing and solos, especially 1980's metal.
Charles can turn anything into a bass solo.
This dude needs to release an album of metal classical.... Hope he kept Metal Guy's contact info.
Love how I got to listen to your composition while you plugged your advertisement. Seamlessly done… pretty much. I can’t even really talk while I play, just make funny faces. Or sing . Kind of.
The Barber of Seville bit would perfect to chuck in in the middle of something crazy.
Metal was still a thing even in the baroque-classical era, it just uses classical instruments!
Edit: Also, thanks for your content you gave us!
Pretty much yeah!
It's always great to have a friend that can turn any song you want into an impossible metal song
When I went to school for music and video business at the art institute of Fort Lauderdale, there was a guy back then that waa turning Master of Puppets into strings and metal into classical. Many might say “proper” metal IS classical…
Mozart would LOVE Metal!! 🤘🏻
LOL The quick zoom past your head at the start is hilarious.
And I agree. Classical and metal are the ultimate match.
I'd would love a part 2!
You had a series (or at least on video) titled tapping through time which was great. I think you should keep doing classical pieces, perhaps Rachmaninov next?
I have always enjoyed neo-classical metal. Literally all of your renditions were a delight to listen to!
Some friends and I did this with a random Suzanne Vega song. I must say it Rocked!
Los Rusos tienen very much metal. Mussorgsky, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Shostakovich etc.Toccata and fugue in D minor by Bach sounds bastante metal. Etc etc
Your spanglish rifa bien hard
I always love hearing metal covers of classical music. It works so well, especially Mozart. My first exposure to it was a band called Scatterbrain, who would put a Mozart cover on each album. Then I love to find new Neoclassical bands and give a listen. My favorite I have found is Exmortus. They're like Death Thrash with heavy classical melodies and classical covers.
Exmortus is fantastic. Great live band too.
You might like First Fragment
It works because it’s the original metal 🤘🏽
dark moor is/was great as well. their album "the gates of oblivion" concludes with an 11 minute mozart medley
Try Gustav Holst metal. Even when not played as metal, it sounds metal AF! 🤘🏽
5:39 If you see Bugs and Elmer when you hear this your Saturday mornings were awesome as a kid!
Since I started playing rock bass as a kid, I have always wanted to do a rock version of the most metal song ever: The Barber Of Seville. I always envisioned it as more of a driving 'Iron Maiden' vibe, but your version was SICK!
For people who dig this sort of stuff and wanna hear entire albums like it - check out Symphony X. The Divine Wings Of Tragedy is so good. So cheesy, but so good.

and many more these are my favourites but if you want to find more the name of this musical genre is neoclassical metal
Just wanted to hop in and give a shoutout to Ne Obliviscaris. They've got a fantastic classical music sound with an awesome metal push. "Forget Not", their title track, is absolutely insane.
Symphony X has TONS of classical music influence
Just check symphonic and progressive metal as a whole.
@@ScamwatchDallin I feel like they have more of a folk sound with the violin and acoustic guitar. But people should definitely check them out, they're one of my favorite modern metal band!
Hello Charles Berthoud, I wanted to say I love the work you're doing and hope you keep continuing
Keep it up!
Thanks!
This is why These Composer's are considered to be Masters of Music, because no matter how or what kind of instrument is used it will always be Amazing to listen to. ❤️ Thank you for this Amazing rendition of these wonderful works of Art!
Awesome playing. It was Yngwie and those symphony/power metal bands that showed me how metal classical music can get.
This kinda reminds me on the soundtrack of the game "The End is Nigh", where every track is based on a classical piece, remixed with drums and guitars. It was the actual reason i started to listen to classic music
OMG I can't believe it, you played "Appassionata" on Bass !! 🤩😱😲👏
Barber of Seville was done metal by Ludichrist in their album Powertrip (1988), and an excellent version it is.
Dude, you did a situation that i never listened before:
The Drums and Guitar keeping the rhythm for the bass to play the music like it was a solo.
You did the opposite and i liked it !
🤘🎸🤘
The fact that this works so well says a lot about Charles' talent and about the roots of metal
Amazing as always!
Stravinksy as metal would be dope. Stravinsky as metal for a ballet performance would be incredible.
I am totally remembering that scene from "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" where Beethoven monopolizes the synthesizers and electronic pianos in the music store.
Also that Beethoven likes Bon Jovi's "Slippery When Wet", supposedly.
my favorite classical transposition into a metal style is probably dark moor's interpretation of mozart's requiem in an 11-minute medley called "dies irae (amadeus)"
of all places, i first heard it on an AMV over 15 years ago and it's still such a great piece of music
they also do a pretty cool version of winter
Vivaldi was basically the first metal composer. My favorite as a cellist is his concerto in G minor, RV 531 for two cellos. Beethoven's sonata pathetique also rocks pretty hard.
love these cos on the bass, especially when you do the tapping, it sounds similar to a harpsichord's tone. I'd love it if you ever did some of Scarlattis sonatas for harpsichord.
I'm so glad you covered Winter, has always been my favorite. Just sublime
4:09: been watching your videos for a year, and the OCD side of me has been desperate to see you hit the highest fret on the G. I'll rest easy tonight.
Not enough blast beats. When you said you made an "extra metal" version, I understood it as "even more metal than the previous one." I know many think blast beats are silly but they add so much power and energy to classical-inspired pieces in particular. When done right, it just works.
The thrash beat is good enough
I always look forward to your videos man. Bass is quite surreal here!
I love you, Man. You are my hero. I'm 60, feel much younger, and when I grow up I'm going to play the bass like you do. Thanks so much.
You are RAWDOGGING that bass!!
We need second episode of this. Few suggestions: Bach, Antonin Dvorak, Bedrich Smetana and Haydn. Mine favorite was Summer, we need it as separate video.
Classical is the original Metal 🤘Edit: My fav was Barber Of Seville, but Winter was a Very close 2nd. Great stuff 🙂
Thank you for putting the links to the other performances.
Everything was awesome in this video. I'm a classical, metal, blues, electro, dubstep etc etc fan and this was the best ever video I encountered. Oh by the way I am an organ composer. I compose dark techno vampire pieces and this is what I would prefer to see in future. A perfect blend of classical, metal, techno is what I consider a masterpiece. Truth be told anything u post is awesome beyond words charles brother. U made my day.
I love how absolutely beat to hell your bass is. Shows how much you actually _played_ it instead of just buying a _reliced_ 🙄 instrument.
You mean a little wear from his “picking” hand?
It’s not beat to shit
the guitar solo in metal song "Metal Heart" by Accept is just Fur Elise. The intro is also some classical piece, I think by Tchaikovsky
I just love that pause in the beginning of Summer.
I finally caught one early! Lol works been killing my notifys but I love when you do the classic stuff lookin forward to watching this when I get home! I already know it’s gonna be good so ima tap like now 😉
That's the way to do it 🔥
Neoclassical is my favorite genre Charles! Love it!
🥺 That was Awsome thank you!
Appassionata was fukking SICK. You are a freaking genius on the bass bro.
Wondering how it would go with an distortion pedal :D
Great work mate! and dont forget you are inspiring people, i started learning bass because of you :)
I figured there’s no way I was the only one thinking it. Don’t get me wrong- this was great, but I still sounded like classical played on top of metal. Distortion and a wah (à la Cliff Burton) would have put these WAY over the top!
Appassionata would be so bad ass with some bass fx.
Finally, an ad I don't want to skip. You have my sub.
i use to skip the usual boring commercials on yt streams. Your perfect commercial break presentation almost let me burn down my rig and build a place of berthoud-worship on the ashes.
Thumbs up to all the musicians! All were amazing.
Masterfully done, I wish I would have had the guts to do something like this for the high school talent show back in the day...
That was amazing! I am blown away both you and your metal friend have the same right-hand pinky ring!
I can’t hear _Barber of Seville_ without envisioning that old Bugs Bunny cartoon that used it. Iconic.
