Good to see you back, Chris! I totally understand feeling like your older videos are a ghost version of yourself. I get that same feeling when I read book reviews I wrote 10 years ago. People change, and if you're not changing, you're not living.
Yay, you’re back! I was thinking about you last week. Glad you were having a good year even if it wasn’t reading as much as you are accustomed. Put the David Mitchell book on my list and Sailor Solider, as someone who raised my first child on her own steam (for better or worse) I hope it’s not too close a subject for me. I think my young mother days are far enough behind me that it should be ok though. So happy to see you and get your take on books 💕❄️.
Welcome back! Totally understand why you'd want to delete the old videos. May I make a request for a future video to perhaps replace some of the old ones? I would love to see a list of favorite books throughout your reading years! Your recs have always been some of my favorites!
I will definitely make a favorites video in the future! I have thought about doing a little project for myself this year where I reread some favorites. Might be a good time to talk about them 😀 so glad that you’ve enjoyed my recs. Cheers!
Glad to see you back! I also loved Jacob De Zoet. I’m currently reading Ghostwritten by David Mitchell and plan to read though all of his stuff in chronological order.
So good to see a video from you Chris! I loved Soldier Sailor too. I'm a new mum and I found the rage and helplessness in it so validating, I've really craved narratives like this.
Thank ya! I’m glad to know that it resonated with you as a new mother. That actually makes me happy to know because I wondered at times if I only found it so good and so raw and honest because I had no experience whatsoever to compare it to. And I wondered if actual new mothers would find it true to life.
I was just thinking about you this week when my Library Book Group met. We were given The Dutch House by Ann Patchett to read this month and I remembered she is a favourite author of yours, and now, a couple of days later, you put up a video! Synchronicity! I have Orbital on my shelves to read, having listened to your review, I think I'll have to get to it sooner. It's great to see you back.
Thanks! I’ve actually been thinking about rereading all of Patchett’s books this year in publication order. Dutch House will be a really good reread for the fall time. Cheers!
Great to see you, Chris! On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous was, well, Gorgeous. Looking forward to Orbital. I freaking loved The Thousand Autumns … I don’t know why I haven’t read any more by David Mitchell.
As always, it's super exciting to see a video from you! I completely understand the lack of videos and agree that it's only worth doing videos if and when you feel like it 😊 I've always worried that on earth you're briefly gorgeous would be too poetic for me but I love the section you read, so I definitely need to pick that up. I need to reread David Mitchell books as I have no idea if I'd still love them but I hope so!
I was also worried that Vuong’s writing would be too poetic for me but it really isn’t. There is a definite rhythm and lyricism to their prose, but it was never too much for me.
Hi!!! I was an old subscriber! Welcome back!! I just want you to know I 1) read Kushiel's Dart and loved it, I heard about it through your channel I think 2) read some Robin Hobb finally and loved it 3) also started some Brandon Sanderson and hated them and also felt the need to share because I remember you didn't like his books and you're one of the only people I can think of who also dislike him
Okay going to leave a more substantive comment now. It’s really interesting to be at a point in life now where there’s are some books I’m not interested in because I’ve always had those experiences. Like Soldier Sailor sounds good, but I don’t need to go back to how hard it was to get things done around a toddler or what it feels like to claim whatever identity you can for yourself amid motherhood. Like-I’ve lived that. I’ve spent years thinking about it, talking about it, processing it already. What else is there to say? Even if that book is very good, I don’t want to dwell there. I guess it’s interesting because I’ve been watching BookTube since 2011, long time viewer of your channel too, but that’s the first time I’ve felt like I have more experience than a book. A weird rite of passage. But Jacob de Zoet sounds like a blast-I’ll give it a try next time I’m at the library. Again-welcome back and glad to hear that you’ve discovered the joy of touching grass!
Thank ya! I totally understand that perspective on Soldier Sailor. It was one of those books that I felt at times incredibly stressed out while reading, and I’ve never had to care for a child in any significant way - let alone raised a toddler. So yeah - do not blame you for that at all. I like that perspective of “I have more experience than the book” I hope you like Jacob De Zoet when you pick it up 😀. Cheers!
OMG I clicked on this video so quickly! Happy to have you back! I've also read On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous in 2024 and loved it too. On the other hand I bailed on two other of your favourites. 😂
Always good to hear from you! I did hear about the new Marillier book! It made me want to go back and reread the seven waters books! I can’t wait to read the new one. Cheers Huck!
Thanks! So good to hear from you! And yeah I’ve been kind of surprised by how many negative reviews I’ve seen of Orbital… it really worked for me tho. Cheers!
I have really struggled with his stuff in the past, so I don’t know if my tastes have changed or if The Thousand Autumns was just a particular departure from his typical work. Cloud Atlas I remember finding particularly turgid. I want to try it again and see if I still think that or if my tastes have changed. Cheers!
It's lovely to see you back Chris, been missing you on the bookcast club aswell!
Chris, thank you so much for reading to us the profound excerpt from On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous.

Thanks man!
Great video, welcome back :)
Great wrap up and glad to see you back! Looking forward to hearing more from you in 2025!
Thank you 😀
Chris! I literally just searched for your channel last week to see what you were up to! So excited to see you in my subscriptions again!
Thank ya! I’m glad to be back 😀

So good to see you back. Glad you aren't gone for good.
Thank ya! Glad to be back 😀

So excited to have you back! Read white ivy on your recommendation a while ago and loved it, excited to take more recs from here!
Such a good book! I’m glad you liked it. I need to reread it soon. I hope she comes out with a new one soon. Cheers!
So happy to see you again!! (No matter how many books you've read.) Oh, and I loved Orbital!
OMG I clicked on this video so quickly! Happy to have you back!
I've also read On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous in 2024 and loved it too.

Always glad to hear from you! Now I want to know what ones you bailed on? Hope you’re doing well 😀
Soldier Sailor and Orbital 😉
Always happy to see you!
Thank you ☺️
Glad to see you again! You may already know but Juliet Marillier has a new book coming out in February called The Amber Owl!
Always good to hear from you! I did hear about the new Marillier book! It made me want to go back and reread the seven waters books! I can’t wait to read the new one. Cheers Huck!
Chris!! Good to see you back, and glad you're doing well!
Edit: and back with one of the only positive reviews of Orbital to boot :D
Thanks! So good to hear from you! And yeah I’ve been kind of surprised by how many negative reviews I’ve seen of Orbital… it really worked for me tho. Cheers!
welcome back! i'm so skeptical of David Mitchell just in general but that Bring Up the Bodies comparison has me very intrigued!
I have really struggled with his stuff in the past, so I don’t know if my tastes have changed or if The Thousand Autumns was just a particular departure from his typical work. Yaah so happy to see you back😊
Thank ya! Glad to be back!
Welcome back
