    Jack,
    Please keep doing these videos and disregard the haters. I’m 70 years old (I can’t believe it. Where did the time go?)
    You have such a passion and enthusiasm for reading. I’ve bought so many books on your recommendation.
    I look forward to your videos. You give me so much hope for the world.
    Thank you for all the work you put into these videos.

Reading is my passion and Jack recommended some books that have become my favourite. I’m so grateful for his work and I feel the same as you : when I feel bad, I watch and rewatch his videos. Not everything has to be overly intellectual or discuss the terrible things happening in the world. I’m so thankful we have witty and fun people like him who can bring us so much joy, good vibes and great book recs! All my love from France (and yes time goes by soooo fast, damn)

    "over consumption" "anti-intellectualism".... I feel like these words have been uncritically thrown around a lot lately. While these things are definitely problems not to be taken lightly, I think you’ve more than proven your devotion to reading-both as a passion and as a culturally curious/intellectual pursuit.
    Ngl, I've missed your reviews because as someone who can't dedicate that much time to reading, being able to get recommendations and insight from people like you who can read a large breadth of genres is something I appreciate. I'm glad that they'll be coming back!
    Also, thank you for spotlighting Palestinian authors over this past year and a half -- true allyship includes engaging with and valuing the perspectives and cultural heritage of oppressed peoples. That being said, I am looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the African literature that you'll be reading this year!

    • @camping_here7706
      @camping_here7706 14 днів тому +23

      Yes, thank you for saying that about over comsumption. I don't think it is over consumption when it's a hobby. Hobby is supposed to be something you are obsessed with. And books can never be over consumption, especially when you are reading most of them.

    • @marja2909
      @marja2909 14 днів тому +7

      Yes. I believe making more lowbrow-leaning, less academical, or even full-on 'non-intellectual' content isn't the same as being anti-intellectual. The popularity of such videos over others might be an indicator of an overall trend towards anti-intellectualism, but on the individual level it is more complex and nuanced

    • @BrandonK4
      @BrandonK4 13 днів тому +14

      @camping_here7706 I think this is beyond a hobby in this instance.
      For this gentleman, it appears to be his livelihood.
      I liken it to this: Imagine telling a mechanic he is overconsuming because he has more than one wrench, or he has sockets in different drive sizes.
      Or imagine telling a lepidopterist they are overconsuming because they have specimen drawers on display.

    • @camping_here7706
      @camping_here7706 13 днів тому +7

      @BrandonK4 I agree. In this case, obviously, Jack is going to read more books than average people. I was talking more in the sense of this recent overuse of the word 'overcomsumption' for hobbies.

    • @andreawatt2988
      @andreawatt2988 10 днів тому

      and @BrandonK4
      Just because something is a hobby doesn't mean your consumption won't be regarded as overconsumption (If I have an obsession with Legos and I'm buying tons of them because it's my hobby, it doesn't mean I'm not overconsuming) The same applies to a job (a mechanic having more than one tool is example is redundant in the sense that no mechanic would unnecessarily spend so much money on the same tool if it's not genuinely needed and if i strictly consider it as a job only then being an youtuber is public personality profession , it depends lot on your "image" than the other professions you have mentioned. Also I remember Jack Edwards talking about being on UA-cam for creative fun and community interaction, not just for making money. When you are such a big name on BookTok and your earnings depend heavily on the people, you have the moral responsibility to at least, on the surface, show that you care about a problem that is very pressing in recent times (The same applies to celebs: if they rub in everybody's face that they are getting roomfuls of packages every week while some can’t even afford basic necessities in the time of recession, they would get burned no matter what) Buying books has become a performance or code for being a reader in yt, if you don't own a lot of books you are not a serious reader. Maybe, like some smaller BookTubers do, encouraging people to use their local libraries and not rubbing in their face that you have 1,500+ books would be better for all

His reviews are so thoughtful and intelligent, he actually reads his books and loves reading, he reads across many genres and he's eloquent and clear in his opinions. And of course I pick up on changes in atmosphere and the kind of energy you're giving off, but I hadn't realised things had gotten quite so dire. I for one have praised you for taking us along through your life journey and for being so diverse and inclusive in your content. You actually feel like a friend I would easily have wonderful discussions with in actual life, fully knowing and appreciating you're the creator and I'm the viewer. Just goes to tell it kinda breaks my heart to hear you've been struggling with consequences of doing what you do, doing it so well, so... Jack. I'm so proud (...) of your journey and choices and stories, I'm glad to hear you've found your old self back again. So glad you're back! For African literary fiction, you might like Umar Turaki. His first book, Such a Beautiful Thing to Behold is about 4 siblings living in a quarantined village where all the adults have died. His second book, Every Drop of Blood is Red, came out in 2024. It's about two families - one Christian, one Muslim - dealing with the aftermath of a hate crime after religious violence in Jos, Nigeria. Both books have a speculative twist and gorgeous writing!

I work in an area where I receive massive amounts of people criticising but sometimes it feels like it is not to help me improve but rather to break me down ( and the ones who do that are a small number but wow can they have an impact). I am not on the internet, so I can not imagine experiencing that at your level. Your videos have always been such a comfort to me, and I have read so many great books because of you; I don't always like the same books as you but I appreciate your perspective and take on them. I am so glad you are still creating through your struggles. As someone who grew up autistic but with no diagnosis, I feel fully this needing to apologise for everything and people picking out things like the way you speak or your excitement over your passion and twist them in to something negative, when they are beautiful. Especially with the internet, at the moment there's this idea that if you aren't only focusing and speaking about all of the big world issues then you are wasting air time, but your content is important, both for it's joy and for the way that you encourage diverse reading without making it a gimmick. Your video's lit a fire within me to read again after years of not reading, encouraged me to try genres I had been told I would be too stupid to understand and find a new and renewed joy in reading. I am glad you are going to rediscover what you enjoy about making content. The right people love you as you are (not just parasocially but IRL), and to them you could never be too much

  • @jacobmattke3866

    For African lit, I highly recommend Leïla Slimani’s In the Country of Others. It’s the first book in a trilogy that follows three generations of a Franco-Moroccan family dealing with being biracial in a rapidly evolving Morocco. This book tells the story of a French woman who moves to her husband’s native Morocco after World War II, just as it is undergoing massive waves of unrest against the French regime. It’s such a well-written, emotional take on the subject. I read it in French and loved it, but I’ve heard great things about Sam Taylor’s translation!
