I have, without a doubt, not included a tonne of upcoming bangers. Let me know if there are any other books you're excited about for 2025!
A list of anticipated translated fiction would be wonderful.
I’ll see if I can fit another vid in!
Yes please do a video of upcoming translated books too!
Thanks for the nudge. Will see what I can do!
Leila Mottley's new novel is coming out June 2025! 😁 It's called The Girls Who Grew Big. Nightcrawling was fierce, so I'm there for anything she writes.
Oh yes! I still haven't read Nightcrawling but it is lingering on my Kindle. Another of the many, many books I need to catch up on 😅
It looks so good. I can't wait
Thank you for all the effort you put in to your videos, they are always well researched and informative. Most importantly though, they make me happy. I always know I’m in safe hands when you post a new video. I hope you know your viewers appreciate you and all you have to say on the world of books. So, thank you again.
What a kind comment!!! 🥹 Thank you so much. It is always nice to hear things like this, because making videos does nottttt come easily to me at all, and the encouragement makes it that little bit more worth it. Thank you!
Ben I have no idea how your channel has passed me by until now but I am DELIGHTED to now be subscribed. Am binging some of your videos atm and looking forward to watching more!
Thank you so much for choosing to stick around! 🙌 Really appreciate the kind words.
Yes to Karen Russell! I just can’t wait, I loved her quirky stories. As for translations, I’d recommend two to check out. The first is Irene Sola’s newest novel, I Gave You Eyes and You Looked Toward Darkness: she’s a fantastic young Catalonian author who creates an immense, magical universe in every novel, imbued with magic and a play on narratives and memories of centuries. The second is by contemporary Hungarian author Rita Halasz titled Deep Breath, it was very successful both critically and sales wise after its release. It’s about a young woman facing her abusive marriage and her life that falls apart.
So the huge news from my week is that I just received a copy of the Karen Russell book in the post, and I am SO EXCITED.
Thanks for sharing those translations - I haven't gotten around to doing an anticipated translations video yet, but I will put those on the longlist!
I just want to say your videos make me happy. They are so well-researched and inspiring. Thank you!
What a lovely comment. Thank you so much! ☺️
I’m looking forward to reading Three Days in June by Anne Tyler and Isola by Allegra Goodman. I’d like to check out a couple of your suggestions too. Happy New Year!!
Im patiently waiting for Isola as well 😊
Isola is on my list as well!
How dare Anne Tyler release her book after Ann-uary has finished 😂 Happy new year to you too!
Oh, a new Allegra Goodman book-that’s exciting. What are your favorites?
@@janetmckenzie146 I've never read from her before, I was just intrigued by the premise.
Thanks!
Oh wow, you didn't need to do this but that's so generous of you. Thank you so much!!!
So many great books to look forward to and so little time! Ali Smith’s Gliff is finally out in the US soon and I cannot wait to read it. There is a new Anne Tyler in February (Three Days in June) which sounds amazing and will be my belated “Ann-uary” read. Other books in the first half of the year I am really excited about are a memoir by Marcus Zusak (Three Wild Dogs and the Truth), a short story collection by Graham Swift (Twelve Post-War Tales) and novels by Fredrik Backman (My Friends) and Rachel Joyce (The Homemade God). Here’s to a great reading year!
Some great additions to the list! The UK is getting the second part of the Ali Smith duology, Glyph, later on in the year too!
Your picks are so interesting and original! Thanks so much for sharing! In my bookclub we’re going to pick some of those books to read 🤩
That's so exciting - I hope your book club loves the ones they go for! I've just read my first one from this list (A Room Above a Shop) and it was excellent 👌
Loved this list Ben! You mentioned a couple already on my radar but most of them were new to me and now definitely on my TBR! I’m currently most looking forward to Torrey Peter’s new novel Stag Dance
Glad there were a few here that were of interest. Stag Dance seems very interesting - seems to be both a novel and some stories, which I don't think I've seen before!
Some here I was also looking forward to (Book of Guilt!) but also some new to me that I’ve added to the list - thank you. My other most anticipated are My Friends by Fredrik Backman and Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConaghy.
Thanks for watching, and for the additional suggestions! 🙌
Excellent list! Updating my TBR now! 😊
Glad some of these sounded good to you! Thanks for watching 🙏
Ooo the antidote sounds amazing I might watch out for it even though I never buy new releases normally. Thanks Ben
Sounds like it could be great, right! It’s been so long since I read Swamplandia! though so I’m very interested to know if I still dig Karen Russell’s writing, or if I’m a different reader now. Thanks for watching!
A great selection! I admittedly dont pay that much attention to new releases since i buy almost exclusively second-hand, and thus have to wait a while before anything becomes available. One thing I'm looking forward to, though, is "I'll love you forever - Notes from a K-Pop Fan", an essay collection by Giaae Kwon. I've read some of her essays in catapult magazine and I think this could be very interesting! Maybe not quite as much for people who aren't into kpop.
Otherwise I'll definitely keep an eye on new releases by Tilted Axis press, Granta, and Catapult. In the Granta catalogue, I saw that Sayaka Murata is having a novel released that sounds like it's based on her short story "A Clean Marriage", which I thought was interesting but never really understood the point of. Might read that just to see if i get it as a novel... Lol
The K-Pop world seems so fascinating and hyper intense, so I bet that'll be a really interesting read!
I know Tilted Axis have had some real financial challenges lately, so I'm glad they still seem to be hanging on.
I have ARCs of about half of these, but added the Shapland, Volckmer and Chidgey to my TBR, so ... thanx? Aside from the new Ali Smith, the two I am most excited about are the new Edward St. Albyn - Parallel Lines, coming May 1 and the new Sarah Moss - Ripeness coming May 22.
Having now read the Shapland - definitely worth prioritising. It's great! I do enjoy Sarah Moss' writing so will be looking forward to hearing how Ripeness is.
I was already hyped for Emperor of Gladness, but you've sold me on so many of these - especially Disappoint Me, Aerth and The Book of Guilt. Hope you enjoy these and thank you for all these brilliant sounding reads :D
Thank you for watching! Glad some of them were up your alley. I'm really looking forward to Aerth - sounds exactly like the kind of thing I want to read right now.
natasha brown, tony tulathimutte and ocean vuong's releases are amongst my own anticipated new reads. i'm happy to learn about woman in blue here! it could be a very me sort of book
Woman in Blue sounds like it could straddle that line between emotional and intellectual perfectly. I'm hyped!
This set of books is awesome-I’ve been looking for an online book person for awhile and have only run across fantasy/YA/sci-fi reviewers. Thanks for the recommendations-I can’t wait to read them (although, of course, I will have to, which is fine) and I’ll be checking out your older videos for more books. 🦋
Thanks very much, and so pleased you've found your way here! Really appreciate the comment 🙏
Thanks Ben, have added a few to my ever growing list!
My apologies for making that list longer 😅
Ben, you are correct. Here I am again begging you to read Bellies😭
Haha I knew this comment was coming! I will get to it, I promise!!!
@benreadsgood hahahaha guilty
translated fiction, yes please :)
I'll see if I can squeeze that vid into my schedule. Thanks for watching 🙌
Thanks for this! I hadn't heard of most of these releases and just added several titles to my to-read list. Books I'm excited about in 2025 are Twist by Colum McCann, Dream Count by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and Good Dirt by Charmaine Wilkerson.
Oooh I didn't realise there was a new Colum McCann - will be looking that one up!
So pleased to see Sean Hewitt on this list. Here's hoping for the Canadian release.
I think it could be a really special book! Excited to see how it's received.
This is my reminder to read Rejection. Lots of great books to look forward to! 👏
So many people have been raving about it, so I'm definitely going to have to give it a go!
A Room Above A Shop sounds good. I have Atmosphere on my radar as well. 😊💙
I've now read A Room Above a Shop, and it lives up to the hype! So good.
Okay, I haven’t watched your video yet so for all I know you cover these, but here’s my list. I’ve been working on it since Septemberish. I’m very excited to read Playworld by Adam Ross. It’s out here on Tuesday and I managed to find it early. Also - How to Sleep at Night by Elizabeth Harris, The Three Lives of Cate Kay by Kate Fagan, We Lived on the Horizon by Erica Swyler, and the English Problem by Beena Kamlani. And that’s just January! It’s the most fabulous time of year to be a book lover!
Playworld is one that came onto my radar just the other day, and it sounds really interesting. Hoping for a proper UK release at some point, but I don't think it's on the cards yet 🥲 Thanks for the other additions!
Torrey Peters has a new book coming out, Stag Dance, in March. I'm in Australia though so can't say for sure when being released in other countries. I'm super keen to read the new Natasha Brown.
People have been raving about Stag Dance already, from what I've seen from early readers. Definitely one to look out for!
I'm most tempted by Woman in Blue, and Calls May Be Recorded. I've had Saraswati on my list since you mentioned it a while ago. As you're an Indigo Press fan, have you any idea if Priya Hein is working on something new as her last book (Riambel) that you introduced to us, made such a lasting impression on me. Oh, and thanks to your March prompt, I've become slightly obsessed with searching out books with 15 letters in the title - sad I know!
I think Priya announced that she's got a second novel coming, called Tamarin. But not sure when!
And I too keep counting the letters in titles, just in case 😂
The Devils by Joe Abercrombie, releasing in May. I discovered his books last year and plowed through every one of them in rapid succession. I’m not a frequent fantasy reader but his writing completely won me over.
So many people have been raving about Abercrombie! Perhaps one day when I clear the backlog a bit, I'll add him to the TBR 😅
❤ my ANNuary pick is "Hello Beautiful" by Ann Napolitano 🎉
Sounds like a great choice - I haven't read it myself but I've heard very good things!
Apart from Atmosphere by TJR, my other most anticipated book is Kakigori Summer by Emily Itami as I loved their debut novel Fault Lines. My fave TJR book is Malibu Rising, which was my favourite book of the year the year it came out .
Ahh Fault Lines was a book I almost took with me on my trip to Japan, as it sounded super interesting. Didn't know she had another book coming up. Thanks for the TJR tip 🙏
What a great selection of books! I've added so many to my 2025 wishlist. I'm really looking forward to the new Chidgey especially. Another few I have on my radar are Mothers and Sons by Adam Haslett (only a couple of days left to go!), Dengue Boy by Michel Nieva (released in Feb), and The Mouthless Dead by Anthony Quinn (released in March).
Ooh yes, Dengue Boy sounds absolutely WILD and I am so interested in it!
Universality is at the top of my list along with The Boy From the Sea by Garrett Carr.
Would love a follow-up with translated books 🙌 Very intrigued by Aria Aber’s Good Girl and The Unworthy by Augustina Bazterrica. And already preordered We Do Not Part by Han Kang ofc.
Plus, I have the audio of Rejection on hold on Libby - with several months to wait, lol, but I think it’s gonna be a really interesting and thought-provoking/confronting read which I’m here for.
Btw, the antidote sounds a bit like The Deep by Rivers Solomon, a very powerful read.
Oooh Good Girl is one I've seen on Instagram and sounds great. Could be a Women's Prize contender! Will have to check out The Deep - not one I'd heard of before 👀
Woman in Blue sounds really good. Im looking forward to Water Moon coming out this month 😊
Sounds super interesting, doesn't it! Thanks for watching, Kirsten ❤️
I would love to see the equivalent with translated fiction 😊 The Book of Guilt sounds interesting to me. I’ve been struggling to find a “Decembros” book that intrigues me (apart from a comfort read of the Brothers Lionheart) but this one might be an option! It’s always the dark themes for some reason…
I’ve only read Seven husbands by TJR as well and loved it, Malibu Rising is on my 25 for 2025 list. The other ones don’t intrigue me as much, but I’m curious to see what people think of Atmosphere. I’m not as inclined to sell my body for space things, but I was skeptical about Seven husbands as well, so I’ll keep an open mind. About space.
Will see if I can squeeze in a translated fiction vid! I suppose luckily with the December prompt, there's a whole year ahead for an interesting one to bubble up 🤞
Thank you for taking my love of space-related content very literally 😂 I haven't had any offers yet, but I can wait.
@@benreadsgood That's true!
Haha you're welcome!
Rejection is phenomenal
I've heard nothing but fantastic things!
The Catherine Chidey book I’d recommend you read is
Remote Sympathy
Thanks for the suggestion 😊
My goal this year is to read "older books". Read 'Brother of the More Famous Jack" and "The Pale Horse" thus far.
Great goal! There are so many gems out there that I haven't even heard of, and even lots of older books I want to read I often don't get around to. But it's one of my goals this year to read more backlist.
Beartooth is giving me Bear by Julia Phillips vibes. Plus I love a mountainous setting
I find there's something oddly gripping about rugged and isolated settings.
bear was my favorite book of 2024. it does not get enough exposure.
Rejection is out in the US, just finished it and I have to say it's INSANE!!
I've been hearing that from so many people and every time it just makes me an extra 5% excited 😅
@@benreadsgood Can't wait to hear your thoughts!!
The Unworthy (Agustina Bazterrica). Wild Dark Shore (Charlotte McConaghy). Greenteeth (Molly O'Neill).
Oooh a new McConaghy! (He says, having still not read the two he already owns 🫣)
Taylor Jenkins Reid - Daisy Jones and the Six is amazing. It was my first TJR. Listen to the audio. It's a full-cast production and maybe one of my top 5 audiobooks of all time.
I have hear fab things about it, so thanks for the suggestion!
Just this afternoon I preordered Isaac’s Song by Daniel Black, a sequel to his brilliant Don’t Cry For Me. It’s out in about 10 days here in the US. Very much looking forward to it.
I will also be preordering Universality. I need to look up some of your other choices as I wasn’t familiar with most of them.
I still haven't read Don't Cry For Me, but didn't realise he had written a sequel! Universality sounds like a wild ride, doesn't it.
Apart from Atmosphere by TJR, my other most anticipated book is Kakigori Summer by Emily Itami as I loved their debut novel Fault Lines. My fave TJR book is Malibu Rising, which was my favourite book of the year the year it came out . Saraswati does sound very interesting. 😊
Great list. I'm curious about Playworld by Adam Ross coming out in the US on the 7th. The review in the WA Post caught my attention.
Also, R.F. Kuang's Katabasis sounds good. Out in July maybe? And I will check out Joyce Carol Oats Fox. I'm just starting to read her work.
Playworld does sound interesting! Although sadly not sure it has a UK publisher yet.
I’m looking forward to Vanishing World by Sayaka Murata and Paris Express by Emma Donaghue. And a new Mick Herron Slow Horses in the fall!
Some great additions - thank you! 🙏
I was excited to see a new Karen Russell book on your list. Last year our library book group read the short story collection Vampires in the Lemon Grove (published in 2013), very fine writing, 5 stars! (There's a dead-presidents-in-the-bardo story in there that predates Lincoln in the Bardo and that I actual preferred, due to my preference for light comedy over relentless ick. And this year Lincoln is our January book club book, argh!!!) Maybe I'll read Swamplandia! this year before The Antidote comes out 💛
P.S. I just read my first translated book of the year, the very short and funny Completely Kafka: A Comic Biography, Nicolas Mahler (writer/illustrator), Alexander Booth (translator), 5 stars!
And my first book of the year coincidentally fulfilled the J-ANN- uary challenge, Perfume and Pain by Anna Dorn, 5 stars! (Not that everything is 5 stars. I've also had my first dnf of the year.)
P.P.S. "Decem-bros" is such a great word and prompt! Will def keep the bear book in mind for that 🐻
I actually haven't read any of Russell's short stories, but I can see how her zaniness would translate well to that format. And great that you've had such a strong run of 5 star books!
@benreadsgood Four 5-stars so far this year, including Gentleman in Moscow, and three 4-4.5 star reads including Intermezzo!
Today I started Sunny Place for Shady People (MariANA Enriquez, another ANN-uary name😃) This is the second book (along with Perfume and Pain) this year that mentions P-22, Griffith Park's celebrity mountain lion. If I read Open Throat soon, also inspired by him, it will be a trifecta!
I love hearing you talk about books! Just subscribed. Check out Sarah Harman: All The Other Mothers Hate Me and Su Bristow: The Fair Folk
Thanks so much! And thank you for the recommendations 🙌
None arises my curiosity, so sorry!! But I am sure that there will be amazing new surprises 😊❤
No need to apologise! We are all different readers and these are just my personal picks 😊
Have you read The Right Stuff by Tom Wolfe? It's the OG astronaut book. Loved it so much.
I have not! I haven’t even heard of it to be honest, but now that you’ve mentioned it I’ll have to check it out. This is one of the dangers of having this channel… too many great recommendations from people 😂
@@benreadsgood It's breezy, mesmerizing nonfiction that takes you into the minds and lives of the first American astronauts. It's got a propulsive rhythm that carries you along. These men are cowboys in their own right, exploring a new frontier. I promise you'll never forget Chuck Yeager. I haven't, and I read the book probably before you were born. There's also a movie version that's quite good, but it's not better than the book. The book is a classic.
Thank you for the extra info - that sounds very interesting!
I would love to see a video on translated fiction.
Thanks! Seems like quite a few people want that so I'll see what I can do 😊
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has a new book out at the start of March. Dream Count. From the blurb it sounds like Women's Prize catnip and I'm excited for it!
I still haven't read any Adiche, but it'll be interesting to see if the Women's Prize decide to nominate her after some of her controversies in recent years. Especially as there are some transwomen with high profile releases that could be in contention too.
@@benreadsgood Oh, I've completely missed any controversies around her. I'm afraid to look it up now. Half of a Yellow Sun is on my "all time favourites" list.
So many books, so little time 😅
Words to live by 😅
Woman in Blue sounds exactly the sort of book I love to read and the book with short vignettes. Very exciting . They all sounds very exciting. Overwhelmingly so.🤭 I’m currently reading Elif Shafak’s There are Rivers in the Sky and suddenly all around there is mention of rivers, water hidden or exposed. Saraswati sounds just marvellous. Not to wish to year away but roll on June. Good pun 😊
Woman in Blue does sound great, doesn’t it! And it’s funny how some topics float to the surface multiple times in short succession. It must be the year of the river!
@ it will be fun meandering downstream though won’t it.
Rejection I loved and Bear Tooth is on my radar 📖🪱💚
Heard nothing but praise for Rejection, so I'm very excited for it to be released over here!
