I have been a knife guy for almost 50 years. my father and grandfather taught me bushcrafting before that was even a word. the mid sized "camp knife" will always have a place in the outdoorsman kit. this GiantMouse is a very well designed blade, but in reality it is WAY outside of my price range budget. I will save coins for several months to make any knife purchases, and really enjoy the time I spend teaching my sons about the woods, and the tools that we use. my youngest son and I have a you tube channel, that my health and finances limit how often we can do videos. but I have said many times that while I like the big chopper survival knives, the ones I carry more often are the more nimble 4-6" camp/bushcraft combination knives. Mors Kochanski is one of the people I look to on the subject of woodscraft tools. Horace Kephart and George Washington Sears are also very big influencers of mine. and the Nessmuk and Kephart knives are excellent examples of a mid sized, durable, and nimble blade that can truly "do it all"

So, why not have both with you? (One on the pack and one on the belt)
@@dennisleighton2812 if I am going to be spending one or more nights in the woods, I will have a big chopper in my pack. but on my belt I will have a mid range field knife ( my favorite is the TOPs BoB) even if I am only going to be out for a couple hours. and it will be on my belt for the entire time I am in the woods.

Why is it that knife collectors are the most unlikely people to use knives? Is it because they wanted something they had no use for?
Frankly, "camp knives" are my favorite category of knives. I prefer mid-size, full-tang knives... My Winkler Pathfinder is among my personal favorites!

I’ll take a good leather sheath 100% of the time over kydex. Just love the look.
I find kydex is good on small fixed blades and XL blades but most camp knife size leather is best.
Providing you get good quality, leather is excellent. In addition to looking good I like that leather is flexible which I find makes carrying just a bit easier against the body. Won't damage your blade (true kydex won't but some plastics will). Won't warp or melt in the heat. I'm in Australia and I've had two kydex sheaths go soft and stuff up on me while in the field. Leave your pack in the summer sun for a couple of hours then try to use a kydex sheath! Finally maintaining leather isn't that hard. Dry it out before storing and rub in some leather conditioner 1-2 times a year - done. Have a great day.
I got this GMF4 from the eBay store of a brick & mortar in my state for $220. The satin one, it is very shiny, so to keep glare and gljnts down the one in this video makes sense . The handle is long enough and I find it thinner than i hoped. It might be a great candidate to mod with a kirinite handle and get a more rustic sheath to create a robust vibe. Its ideal in spine stock thickness, its robust and not shrimpy or sharpened pry bar type knife. I think.its an excellent value because it answers what i searched fir in a knife made from N690 Co. It would be awesome in SPY27! Ill be happy whenever they put out a fixed blade with their proprietary alloy. I do have the Mule in it so a design intrnded for camping like GMF4 would compliment my uses.
Excellent presentation 👏🏾 This knife to me feels like the one you gift to someone a little newer, yet very enthusiastic to learn bushcraft and outdoor extended camping life. Because it's not just a sledgehammer it will require some thoughtfulness about the tasks you choose to do with it, but the build quality lends itself to lasting decades with proper care.

I, on the other hand, have quite small hands, so the Cold Steel knives (Trail Master and SRK) suit me better than those big bulky handles.

What a great looking knife and seems a pretty good "do it all" kind of knife. I feel a perfect belt knife is around the 5"-6" blade length. It just feels right and if it's built well can do many tasks a small axe would normally do. If I could only have one knife it'd be the Esse 5 or the comparable Lion steel and kabar knives. They're all great and can rely your life on them.
Beautiful knife, wasn't expecting it to be that light. After a lot of consideration I ordered a GSO-4.5 Bushcraft to use as a camp knife! Lightweight, nimble, food prep, fire prep, that's what I'm looking for in my next camp knife, and it will fit in my Vidda's Pros knife pocket because like you said, at camp I want to carry my knife.

Nice to see knives that are actually designed for camp tasks. Some days I see blades and they're marketed as bushcraft/survival/camp knives, but they look like you should be naked in a tree waiting for some wayward bear to waddle by so you can get the drop on it.

The 4 to 6” camp knife is my favorite because I can throw that one tool in my day pack and accomplish just about everything I need to in a pinch. There are better tools for this and that job, but few tools that can match the versatility of the camp knife 👍

Love many of GM’s designs, I have several of their folders. I was attracted to that fixed blade until I found out it’s cost vs the blade steel used. Ended up purchasing the Lionsteel T5 for half the money. I do have a few fixed blades that size in N690. All were in one hundred twenty to one sixty range.

Thanks for another great review. This looks like a great knife that fits a lot of uses and needs. However, I have to compare it to my Lionsteel T5. The GMF4 is just too expensive for what you get compared to the T5 which is about $90 to $100 less money. Both are Italian-made knives as you stated. So as you can tell I still haven't found a knife that I love as much as my Lionsteel T5 and it remains as my go-to knife when camping and hiking.
Awesome look at the GMF4. Definitely not a dying breed, as lots of knives with that length out there. A camp knife is the knife you take camping with you. I go car camping, so I actually take a chefs knife for food prep. My chopper and general task knife can be as big and robust as I feel like taking :D
Knives will keep coming, even if people are going. Such is the way of the knife.
In some ways, I think the problem with camp knives is the way knife culture has developed on youtube, insta and other social media platforms... playing toward the extremes gets clicks, so generally outdoor knives are covered most if they're focused either to the most hardcore "my opening sequence is heavy metal or country music with explosions" people or to the most casual "I'm going out to the woods in a fully-stocked RV for a pleasant light hike" types and... the camp knife falls in between those use-cases. For food prep that is neither "oven in the car" or "roasting bugs over a primitive hand-carved spit. For camp tasks that are neither "pop-up tent" nor "crafting a hammock by processing paracord with your teeth". Moderate use tools aren't flashy in these kinds of venues, don't drive clicks, thank you for covering those inbetweens.
I have similar tastes. One of my favorites is my Bradford Guardian 5.5 full flat grind in 3V, and a Fox Felin FX-517 in N690
I think those size knives are the best for doing the most without being too big and heavy. For me that is somewhere between 5 and 6.5 inch blade. Something like the Chris Reeve 5.5 GB, Lionsteel T5, Spartan Difensa, Giant Mouse, Chris Reeve Pacific, Esse 6.
I don't have a Huckberry, I have a Filson. But waxed is amazing! Definitely a jacket people should look into. Something you'll hand down for sure!
That's what struck, waxed canvas I call "tin cloth" and I have yet to get some. Often finding out about things through this channel!
It's a nice knife. I could see getting a lot of use out of it. But like you say the price is a little high. Still a nice Knife. One thing about it if the price came down a little bit, I may snatch it up. I recently picked up a ESEE HM, And I really like it. Can't knives will never die.
The camp knife is far from dead. You can snap an Esee 4 in half and they’ll send you a new one.
Seems like most of my fixed blades are in the bushcrafter range and a lighter camp/field knife is a bit refreshing. I've noted that there are fewer being made and a number of the better ones are at good price points. For example, I just picked up a SOG Pillar satin blade in kydex for just under $150. That is USA made in SV-35. Same description as the giant mouse with a light feeling, oversized finger coil letting you chalk up on the blade for detail work and lighter than comparably sized bush crafters. Mora Garberg is still super light and cheap in the arena. Cheers
Totally my only thoughts with the SoG and mora are the grinds. I like FFG or High saber for my camp knives.

I wish I could show you a picture of an old camp knife I have It's cold steels bushranger. It's probably about 30 years old by now I got it at a gun and knife show in Topeka Kansas when I live there in the mid '90s.
For the money and those on a budget, the Mora Kansbol would be an excellent camp knife. It is not a big baton knife and it would have to be teamed with a camp axe and folding saw. I have lots of knives and usually just use a regular Mora Companion.
I was thinking the same thing. I'd be tempted to take my belt sander to the Kansbol to make it a proper full flat all the way along the blade, as I find I'm using flat grinds for food a lot more than a Scandi for wood

I see huge value in a camp knife. For many of us it's much more likely to be needed and used than a survival knife or bushcraft knife. I'm surprised that you didn't compare it to a Lionsteel T5 though - they seem very similar (though it was valuable to contrast it with the M7 survival knife). BTW, the GMF4 didn't appear to be very sharp in your video clips. Thanks!

I much prefer either a full flat grind or a high almost flat grind. Now I tend to go with drop points like ESEE/RAT 6 and don't find much use for a more combat stabbing point like the GMF4.
Larger knives with thinner stock and a choil. Sounds like a great camp knife. Like a chef knife in the woods.
I see no reason to baton logs… pretty much ever.
Give me a 5” blade knife with a 1/8” thick blade. Unfortunately that’s a tough to come by.
This is what a camp knife should be. I like over built but most times this is what is needed.

I’ve eliminated the “Camp Knife” slot from my blade family, preferring to skip it and go from a Bushcraft knife jumping right to a Survival Knife.
My bushcraft knife has yet to be acquired, but my choice of Survival knife is the SCHF9, one of the old original models.
I have this thing that I do that is not mix my food knife with my chopping feather sticks and so on and use my pocket knife for my food so a one tool that does it all doesn’t exist for me at least and I’d still prefer my chunky knives I use a BK-10 crewman with the thumb ramp ground down but I run a 3 knife system small medium large the small being pocket knife is for food buck 110 size medium being the bk10 or a marbles ideal knife and large being a 9ish inch prybar with an edge or hatchet/axe depending on the area I’m in so camp knife varies note I am not a hiker or backpacker so I’m not overly worried about the extra weight
I call them all camp knives. My Opinel is a camp knife like my machete is. They just differ in size and functionality. This seems like a nice mid size camp knife although expensive. For food prep I'm not a fan of coating, jimping or a leather sheath. I want the knife and sheath to be easy to clean. And if it's just opening packages an SAK or Opinel is sufficient. So the 'Camp knife' is not gone. People have just started coming up with new names.
I'd buy that jacket in heartbeat, but it only comes in 2x at the largest. I'm 6'6" 300lbs. Everything is catered toward smaller people. It is very difficult to find any decent outdoor camping and hiking clothing (and tents/sleeping systems!) for someone my size 😢

I’m hoping to help with the camp knife segment living a little longer. My ideal knife is actually a camp knife, and I have a great design for one. Have one made but I want it made exactly as I would make it, so I’m working on it

Good review. I was thinking more of the T5 as a comparison then the M7 from LionSteel as far as the build and size. Any thoughts? Maybe it's the steel used and price that made it comparabe.
Maybe the Lionsteel T6. Fantastic multitasking knife. A bit bigger but not a sword-knife. And the Cpm 3V is a much better steel, nowadays maybe one of the top knives steel.
Camp knives are simply the best overall option for going into the woods. Forget the scandi uni-tasker, no absurdly no large survival knife. Personally, I go for a hand forged Kephart for a camp knife.
I think a decent comparison would be the esee 4 s35vn. For the taht mid 200’s a bark river bravo lt would be a good choice and they come in 3v, magnacut, Cruwear.
Ya I just hate the Esee 4 because of the choil. I like the esee4hm way better. To bad they don’t make that in s35vn.

I love the GMF4 and camp knives in general. I am more utility minded so i like knives that are well rounded vs singular in purpose. The GMF4 is so beautiful to me, but over priced. For that price i would like to see Cruwear, 3V, 4V, etc. 🙏 for V2 with magnacut closer to the $200 price point!
Greater steel alloys and more options as well as value for money are wonderful stuff. Happily I actually wanted this type/ size of knife but made in N 690 and couldn't find one that spoke to me. ( in fantasy land, I'd love a full integral knife in N690) I have become interested in this model, bit haven't found a dealer with it in stock since I started looking this morning

Camp knives definitely aren't dead to me. I have survival knives and love them but i prefer to carry a well built edc or the slightly larger camp knife style blades as opposed to larger survival knives.
Once you've used a good knife, the typical mass produced stuff you buy in stores is deeply disappointing.

G'day Aaron, yep great design and sheath package, I'm quite happy with N690 too, but not 250-ish USD happy. GM = Giant Moolah. In fairness, it should last a lifetime and beyond and if its your go to for every trip, all of a sudden it becomes much better value ; ) Cheers Duke.
P.S. No way I'm going anywhere away from civilisation without a quality "camp knife", saw and a big chopping/batoning fella of some description. If memory serves, Dave Canterbury calls it "the 3 tool rule" and couldn't agree more. Mind you, not forgetting the all important 4th tool ........ decent skills to go with them ........ otherwise the only thing dying here .......... is potentially yourself : I
Very nice knife! Definitely more capable than you ordinary camp knife. More along the bushcraft/backwoods/survival spectrum. A drop point is more of a camp knife than a clip point (slice vs stab).
My definition of a Camp Knife: *A light weight, fixed blade outdoors knife used mainly to conduct simple cutting tasks around a planned campsite such as food prep, medium duty cutting and utility use. Possibly useful for small wood processing such as tent stake making, small branch carving or a hotdog stick.*

I’m sorry Aaron I like it but I’m still aiming to get the Esee 6 and I’ll tell you why. I want a camp knife in that range that is nearly indestructible and I know that the Esee is that knife for $100 less. I don’t mind putting Ballistol on my knives and could always do a forced patina. Esee 6 still and excellent knife for the money.
If you want an indestructible survival knife, the ESEE 5 is the better choice.
The ESEE 5 is MUCH thicker than the ESEE 6.
I own both and if I could only own 1, it would be the ESEE 5.
@@BigDaddySwingingMeat I respect your opinion but I prefer the extra length and thinner stock of the 6. Both baton fairly well giving the edge (pun intended 😆) to the 5 and chopping,feather sticks etc are close enough. One thing I like about the 5 better is the pommel of destruction 😉. The 6 will do some damage but not like that pointy pommel on the 5. Both great blades and I’m starting to think about the junglas 2.
@@richroc7 I own a Junglas 2 as well and that's an excellent blade too. I wish ESEE made an ESEE 7 that was as thick as the ESEE 5 and as long as the ESEE 6. I also prefer the flat grind of the ESEE 6 over the saber grind of the ESEE 5.
However, the ESEE 5 is the stronger of the two blades. It's basically a sharpened pry bar. I have even used it as a stepping stone to climb up a tree. It's that strong and thick. It's a very well made blade, it's not perfect, but it's close. If it was longer, had a flat grind, and was made out of CPM 3V, CPM M4, or Elmax steel it would be perfect.

Actual outdoorsmen and hunters will never ditch their large blades. bushcrafters are a different species, however.
Get a silky saw bigboy 2000 and a decent 4-5" knife and there is pretty much nothing you cant do.
Dont waste energy using an axe or a big chopper. Its just a big gimmic in my opinion.
Le$$...than expected, considering design, camp'ability' and leather sheath. Besides a good camp should have firewood tools also. Lightweight maybe not a solid tang under scales?

I would like to know what you think of the Tundra Hunter by Gil Hibben
I think this kind of knife is a perfect size for hiking. I live in Sweden and during winter you kinda need an axe or a very big knife/machete like a Junglas or a Skrama in combination with a big saw. During summer you can get by with just a small folding saw (like a laplander) and a medium knife. My choice is a Benchmade leuku 202, Jäkääripuukko 140 or M95 Sissipuukko in combination with a laplander, Silky Pocketboy, Gomboy or F180. I would love to see you do a review of one of these three knives because they are strong, light, has good geometry and are ergonomic, and best of all they are budget friendly.

The sharpened blade portion is almost exactly that of the old 5" Kabar official Boy Scouts knife, which happens to be my favorite knife. I really miss mushroom pommels, I find them very useful.

Gotta ask you to take a look at the sport x.e.r.o., 4 different model from condor. On paper it looks similar, slim blade, about 9", budget steel, micarta.

This is like the "is X caliber obsolete" nonsense. No tool is ever obsolete if someone has a use for it. I use an impact driver at work, but I still carry a regular old screwdriver in my bags all the same. I also have a shop full of old tools that still get used whenever the need arises.

Though the guardian5.5 is great and is a better value for the materials, I like the ergos and slightly larger size of the GMF4
I have to say that GMF4 indeed quite closes to the perfect camp/survival knife in my mind, in terms of its shape. It has good high saber grind to prepare foods easily, 5 inches blade to do batoning easily and not too wide on blade for good control.
It is made from N690 with good corrosion resistance. However, I also concern its toughness. If it is made from well-heated 3V/Cru-wear/MagnaCut, I give it 10 of 10.

Brother i have never ever hammered in tent pegs with a knife..😂. Just make a flat spot on a piece of wood. Put all the tents up and then burn it.
Sometimes i find the requirements of a knife get ridiculous with utubers trying to find flaws in a design.
Please sir do a video on differences of survival knife and camp knife and prefered steels.

I thought a lot about where this GiantMouse fits in, because It looks like a very cool knife, with VERY pleasing lines and form. The fact that it is so light is appealing, but that is also a disadvantage, as we both know.
To me, that spot is dominated by the CS SRK, which after all, sets the benchmarks for the spot. Unfortunately, an inch here or there, in this slot, does make a difference (which is maybe why the ESEE 5 is so bulky with that 5inch blade length). The ESEE 6 has the right length, and is a great knife, but a tad heavy for a belt/camp knife, as is the Lion Steel you mention.
So, in my mind the whole topic of choice of blades revolves around the belt/camp knife slot - that is how important it is. A 4 inch blade doesn't fit here, and a 7 inch blade is more in the Large category.
So where does that leave us?
Obviously, a Large knife is highly desirable for serious outdoor work, and the choices here are legion. I've used a large knife for decades (a Bushwhacker copy I made myself out of thick N690 steel) and it served me very well for a host of tasks. Until I decided to spoil myself and replace it. After much deliberation and getting advice I settled on my Cold Steel Trail Master San Mai III. Yes, its expensive, but I bit the bullet. Excellent sheath for it (by Rob Evans, Wales) and love that knife. It has many of the qualities you ascribe to the GiantMouse, but on steroids! This large knife would probably be carried attached to a pack, within easy reach, when needed.
That leaves the slot down from the SRK belt/camp knife.
Here, I'm even more conflicted. I'm not a bushcrafter, but I do acknowledge that those who follow the craft actively require serious tools which must adhere to certain criteria. This usually means a Scandi grind knife of a steel whose main strength would be edge retention. That's fine for them.
For an ordinary bloke like me (and possibly many others) maybe a more versatile tools might be a better bet. Versatile usually means that it needs to be more like a multi-tool, for dealing with a wide range of tasks usually associated with the outdoors. The people at Victorinox have been considering such needs for many decades and have built and sold millions of knives specifically for this need. No, they are NOT perfect at doing all of them. No knife is! However, they clearly do do them to a pretty high standard. So, that left me considering which Victorinox would suit MY needs best. I've owned an SAK, (often more than one, like now) for nearly all my life. I also own a Leatherman, so that adds perspective.
Right now, the most suitable model is without doubt the Hercules. With its 18 tools it is very versatile and still manageable in terms of weight and bulk. This knife would be worn on a lanyard, hanging inside my trouser pocket, as I've done for decades.
For longish trips outdoors this is the choice for me - all three (and, of course, there would always be a Silky folding saw - not negotiable).

For me, a 4” knife and an ax do everything I need when camping. I don't see the need for a camp knife as you are discussing.

the big survival knifes were always a meme (aka a joke). Bigger tasks that waste more energy can be accomplished with a dollar store half-tang 1mm thin paring knife. The best knife is the one on you and outside of defense it doesn't need to be sturdy, you just need to know how to put said knife properly to work. Or bring a hatchet yeah, bring a hatchet or a machete.
Now, show me how you baton even a 3 inch diameter wood or even cut off a twig with that 3cr sheet metal😅. You simply don’t understand the difference between a 3-4 inch blade and a 5-6 inch blade. That 1-2 inches makes the knife able to chop a little and baton decently, which will be impossible to accomplish or extremely energy consuming to do with small knives. And lastly, WHO TOLD YOU BIG KNIVES MAKE WORK HARDER? If you decide to chop through an 2 meter thick old growth, that’s idiotism and should not be blamed to the knife. And while a 1dollar crap metal struggle cutting off a twig, a 10 inch you-called joke can hack through a small tree in a few swings.
