Gabe Sutherland normally just scoops ice cream. However, after an armed robber burst into the Hollywood District's Baskin-Robbins - Sutherland used his martial arts skills to take him down. Watch the video above to see KATU's in-person interviewe with the man who disarmed a Sunday masked man who

"A masked man walked right through the door." Nah, I'll bet he opened it first.
yeah 10yr old gen z humor
😂
You have my respect. To bad there aren't more people around like you.
"Useless classes he was taking?" Yeah, okay.
Ikr lol
That's why she said ''useless'' using air quotes, meaning that's what she used to think
She must be jealous of him. How could anyone consider a class that trains your fitness, coordination and emotional fitness all at the same time as "useless" is just ridiculous
She rolled him lmao 😂
@@abouttime2569she a bozo
thats one proud fella, this is exactly what martial arts is all about. defending yourself and others against the wrong. and just shows even the basic moves can come to useful effect .
he saved the life of all those ice creams, true hero!
Aikido has mainly three branches, ki-aikido, aikikai and yoshinkan.
What I've heard, Japanese (and many other) police forces use Yoshinkan Aikido in their training. I'd say that is proves that the art is efficient in real life situations.
For those of you who don't know, ki-aikido is more towards spiritual, aikikai is most flowing, yoshinkan is towards more "hard" style then the other two, most near to aiki-budo/aiki-jujutsu.
All of these are efficient, it's not the art but the practitioner.
I've been a black belt in aikido and jujitsu for a while, proper wrist locks and slips are vital, and taught early
There is another branch that is always forgotten: Iwama Traditional Aikido. this is the hardest and most complete one. I believe unfortunately in the USA it is little practiced, I believe there are very few dojos where this style is practiced.
He did the right thing. We can not cower in fear.
I love how she said "he gave the suspect a taste of his latest moves."
yes, finally an aikido practitioner
Who robs a frikkin ice cream shop?
You don't have a criminal mind. You just answered your own question.
tkach21
HUH???
I'm with you, HUH?!?
***** Uh, I wouldn't do that. I'm black, your argument is invalid.
+Guileful Cheshire I WAS JUST ABOUT TO SAY THAT
Noone messes with an icecream man-
Hando Rand
He's one BadAss icream man!
Hando Rand The Amazing Ice Cream Man
Kotegaeshi!! I love this technique, simple but effective.
My wrists are hurting from this being done to me in class tonight, my wrists, ribs , knees are telling me how effective aikido is. Thank you Osensei.
Good Job ! Never Stop Training !
@assassin9783 I am with you on that. If it don't work, it's the person not the art. All Martial Arts work in the right situation. Most people are just not willing enough to do the repetitions until it is natural and without have to think, this guy was. Respect due.
EVERY self-respecting martial artist (no matter what style) SHOULD also know advanced Aikido and Jiu-Jitsu. Aikido can be extremely effective in many situations. Sadly it is underrated. And Jiu-Jitsu... well, there's just nothing quite like it. These 2 are must-haves practically for everyone. If you master these 2, you'll be in control of any fight. They're awesome!
my first reaction was ohh boi...haha legend
Great story....... love to hear more successes like these.......
Aikido is actually a really good martial art. Idk why people don't like it.
@ChristopherSaindon you're the kind of person who brings wars and misery in this world and is proud of it. Wow.
So aikido works. Impressive.
Vast majority of martial arts work, just what moves under what circumstance. Also training so its muscle memory.
Of course duh
That's pretty good for 3 months of aikido
***** That is Kotegaeshi in Aikido you stupid pig . Research before comment .
***** Most techniques are taught in other martial arts, fool. Aikido comes from the same source material as Judo and Jiu-Jitsu. You think the Gracies invented the ground-game?
lmfao no its not that like the first 2 lessons
lol when the whataburger I worked at was robbed for some reason all I could think was "Can I turn off the little beeping noise on the fryer...they're done..."
Haha me tho
haha Im not going to take a bullet for an ice cream store lol
Pussy!

You listened ok, it was Aikido and the technique he applied was a kotegaeshi.
It is not. Munetsuki is kind of attack (stub to the chest). Kotegaeshi is wrist twist. Munetsuki kotegaeshi is wrist twist, as a reaction to stub to the chest. This is kotegaeshi, but obviously not munetsuki kotegaeshi.
I said "With sprinkles"..........
LOL
Respect man!
13 years of Martial Arts
Never give up
Love it, Love it, Love it!!!! Way to go buddy. I'm really glad that your ok. Praise God!!
So he says. Where is the security camera footage ?
"Just after opening the store around noon, a masked man walked right through the door." QUESTIONS: 1. "WHO opened the store?" 2. Who came in? 3. Was he injured, coming in? 4. Amazing that your listener can still follow what happpened, based on your report.
Ah, I see. An "Edit" function that doesn't. OK.
Never... *EVER*... fuck with Baskin-Robbins.
That cash register was filthy
hero, keep up with the martial arts
Nice kotagaeashi, especially after just 3 months. Props to that guy
maybe its too die for Ice cream, lol
His first reaction was "Oh boy, gonna kick this guys ass.".
The money?!?! Why not the ice cream! Maybe that's just my thinking.....
He's like a super hero
GIVE ME A SCOOP OF VANILLA AND A SCOOP OF CHOCOLATE WITH GUMMY BEARS AND SPRINKLES he probably said.
how dare she call them useless classes!
Aikido - no wonder - perfect situation for it. Note the gun contorl laws of the city made it so only the bad guy was armed.
im from the uk and people who rob shops over here do it at night when no one is around and no need for weapons so no one can get hurt, your shopowners are crazy to be runnin stores when that many robberies go on!
For Joe Rogan and those who scoff and mock at Aikido, saying, "it will not work in real life" They talk from thought patterns and what they see on the net. O Sensei wanted it to resemble a rehearsed act and mechanical to the objective viewer, so only a practitioner feels the secret. I used mine to come out of a potential robbery. Life happens, talk is cheap.
He not only scoops ice cream but he also opens cans of whoop ass.
Totally Agree money can be replaced.I THINK THIS MAN WAS VERY LUCKY
He walked through the doorway not through the door, that would be difficult since most doors are solid.
Kim Jong-Un doesn't rob a icecream store. He demands to have icecream.
the issue is not if the attacker is armed or unarmed. if you feel in fear for your life or serious bodily harm, you generally have the right to use deadly force to defend yourself. when you unlawfully attack someone, even with bare fists. you should expect to have deadly force used against you if you physically attacking someone. (i am not a lawyer and i am not giving legal advice)
he served up the 32nd flavor... PAIN
Man who the hell would take a chance in getting charged for armed robbery for a damn icecream store? lol. GO BIG OR GOD HOME.
robber: Give me the money now !!!
Employee: try the Krav Maga flavor... it comes with a jail time free pass
@countrysamurai
Well from my very brief experience with Aikido, it's not an aggressive martial art. Once you are in control and the threat is no longer immediate, there is nothing more to be done.
Everybody knows ice cream store is a place martial artists train their mouth.
i wouldn't fuck with a guy who could walk through doors... this guy has balls
I have the same effect after an ice cream! I think I'm Chuck Norris with a tin on my chest!
@NINOBROWN914 Aikido. A Japanese grappling martial art. The technique the man used is called kotegaeshi.
didn't even think about that aspect of this failed robbery till you mentioned it haha. robber failed twice!
You might be Baskin but you aint gonna be Robbin, not in my store.
no question, his face coulda been all over the ceiling turning the gun up and around like that. brave fella, glad it came off.
Well what colour was the robber, then you will know who would rob an ice cream store.
🎵Your the best around 🎵 no one's ever gonna keep you down🎵
Steven Segal will eventually take credit😂
Segal is a liar and made up almost all of his resume. No one has yet been able to verify his claims of tournaments he has won. He is an embarrassment to the Martial Arts and the people who master them.
Pretty much sums it up for me. Drastically increasing risk to your life is a poor deal to make for some store front cash.
The gun could have gone off accidentally purely in the action of grabbing the robber's hand.
Coulda, woulda, shoulda. Gee I love armchair quarterbacks.
He made the right choice life or death situation keep fighting until you can't anymore
In Asia you don't see people talking " i need guns to protect myself or my family ". Self explanatory.
Aikido for the win!!
You know Gabe got a piece of Clarke Flowers.
Segal doesn't make his leather with cows, he uses ninja hide.
lol " My first reaction was like ohh boy.."
He walked right through the door? No way.
the reporter said just three monthes? he was a lucky guy.
Very smart move! The technique this employee used is called kote-gaeshi
that cornhoillio you never steal from 31 flavors
in that whole shop, not a single camera is present?
boy look like a white carlton
The good ol' tried and true wrist lock.
I'm sorry, but I think he just made the whole thing up!
you forgot:
3.5) take $2.00 from thugs wallet to buy ice cream cone.
4) walk off with his gun like a boss while enjoying free ice cream
lmao
His first reaction was "O boy" Hes Sam from quantim leap. Most have just swaped bodies at that second
Dang it, now I want ice cream.
I like how this took place in a Baskin-Robbins...in Hollywood....
@isocrate27 he was probably trying to protect his life, not the company. after someone says theyre going to kill you, nothing makes sense except for survival
REALLY? WHO WOULD HAVE EVER GUESSED?
Thank you for your insight, captain obvious.
Awesome man!
Anyone who robs an ice cream store.......deserves a royal beating.
My mom use to work at dunkin dohnuts when a man robbed them, he also took a dozen dohnuts to.
The gun he lost was worth more than what he stole O.o
wait... so he tried to rob a ice cream store
@isocrate27 i dont think you understand what i was saying. just because somebody comes into your store with a gun and demands money doesnt mean that person has alternative motives. in some robberies the clerk will cooperate completely and still get shot for no fathomable reason. his actions may have saved his life, whether or not the CEO money taken from him is completely fucking irrelevant
new sign "open for buisiness. *clerk is now armed"
Well...Aikido was not supposed to work out...MMA guys consider it as fake.
oh Ryan! It just shoots blanks.............actually, I don't even know if it's working these days.
suspect came in with a $200 dollar gun, left with $100 cash.
He was also fired 2 days later for failing to adhere to company policy.... Always give the robber the money do no resist.
The guy is lucky... lucky his training worked & lucky he didn't get fired. A lot of businesses have a strict policy about confronting a thief like that.
That is, when the owner's lawyer covers his own asp.
who the fuck robs baskin robins? an icecream store.. thats hardcore
I couldn't read the whole title on this thumbnail. I was hoping it said 'Man takes down robber with martini'. But depending on the gun the robber used and he only got $100? Looks like ice cream guy robbed him.
True or untrue...fact still remains..and it is coming down to just this. People cannot run around thinking they can do whatever they heck they want. There are a TON OF highly skilled MMA fighters..military etc. who will not put up with it...including citizens. The days of runnin' and gunnin' are coming to an end. Step outside the law..you will get your ass handed to you. Enough is enough...."Order From Chaos"...
top fighters of every kind understand this and even the best of the best would rather have a gun than just their fists and feet in a truly life threatening situation. obviously, having a gun is no guarantee either, but would you really rather take your chances with or without one? remember, self defense is not a sport. your and your loved ones safety is the goal. i recommend training in both martial arts and firearms. stay out of trouble, use common sense, and be safe.
"A masked man walked right through the door" Ouch that would hurt. I think he walked through the doorway :))
a person who robs an ice cream Shoppe is a damn fool
