sltgbco My dad was stationed there during the Korean War and always wanted to return but - sadly - never did. I hope to visit the places he beautifully described next year. Safe travels!
You are an amazing lecturer and educator. An ambassador of culture and peace. Thank you for your elegant sense of humor, dear Rick! Keep traveling and inspiring!
Hi I've only recently discovered your channel and I have to say I'm loving it. I am from Iran and a new subscriber of your channel. I'm very happy to watch this video 🙌, thanks very much for sharing this beautiful video.
Loved it. On weekends we used to go south through Frankfurt to Rudesheim am Rhein, then take the road up all the way to Koblenz. Good times and good food. Amazing scenery.
I know this video has been here for a while, but this is just a quick FYI for anyone going to Germany planning to take advantage of the "no speed limit" thing: There are actually lots of stretches of the Autobahn where there is a speed limit. So keep your eyes open and don't get fined for speeding :)
Dresden is the city where the massed bombing in 1945, created a massive firestorm, killing 20,000 people, I stand corrected on the numbers. This extensive bombing of Dresden became a very controversial issue post war. Dresden has such magnificent old buildings, art and history, I could spend a week in Dresden and not even scratch the surface. I did my travels on the continent when I was stationed in Germany for two years in the mid 1950’s, very different in 2022. Greetings from Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺🦘
Hi Rick, I really appriciate your presentation about Germany. Just two suggestions: Recomment to visit the "Memorial to the murdered Jews" at late night. There is an amazing shadow play, no tourists and the experiance is unforgetable. Another thing to get a real feeling of history is to make a tour of the "Berliner Unterwelten (Berlin Underground)". Hidden Bunkers, Subway stations ... I think there is no better way to experiance the 2nd world war History of Berlin. All the best from Germany
32:02 don't miss the Miniatur-Wunderland, the most famous tourist attraction in all Germany. And the Elbphilharmonie is worth a visit on the viewing platform.
It was a pleasure for me to hear that, living in Germany until now. In a nutshell, especially for a short stay. Thought I would have to use this myself.
There is some evidence to suggest "Mad" King Ludwig wasn't mad at all, and was deposed in a palace coup. His death after his deposition was very suspicious as well.
10:56 That may explain why for a lot of Europeans the North is also very popular - the North Sea Coast comes to mind or the Baltic Coast and Rügen and cities like Hamburg, Lübeck or Bremen. But also the countryside of Lower Saxony and the Lüneburger Heide (including the town of Lüneburg. For Dutch that is close to home and it used to be part of the British sector of occupation. Also very popular with Europeans is Berlin, the Rhineland and the Moselle Valley (parts of it used to be in the French sector). It's funny how all these little things may still play a role. The former GDR is slowly beginning to increase in popularity but it will take some time. You yanks are just going to different places and get a whole different view of Germany. :P
16:10 Living in Munich and doing everything by bicycle, I just had to smile at the moment Munich was put on the same level as Amsterdam and Copenhagen, when it comes to bicycle traffic. No it isn't! Cycling conditions in Amsterdam and Copenhagen are WAY better than in Munich, sorry to say that :-( Munich is not designed for bikers.
Watching this as I am looking at going to Oberammergau this year for the passion play. Now laughing at the irony of locals starting the play in order for god to spare them of the plague, as Rick saying that the next chance to see it was in 2020.
surprised to hear the comment about Germans being told by their doctors to spend a month in Black Forrest - he seems more genuine on the travel videos..
it’s kind of funny how almost all tourism is based in medieval nostalgia. nobody is traveling across the globe to see a big postmodernist glass and steel skyscraper hahahaha
The only thing that's always bothered me about Rick Steves' travel shows and talks is the almsot always completely ignores nature oriented attractions, like in Germany at Schloss Sayn, there is a world class butterfly garden. You almost never hear of him mentioning botanical gardens to visit, either... he's always just prattling on about the architecture and the people and the food. As if that is all there is to see in a country.
That’s the stuff he is personally in to. Plus he’s a boomer and kind of preaching to a boomer audience and they aren’t into hikes and the like that much. Just eating drinking and shopping
He is one in a million, best among many, most trusted , I almost gave up on trading then I met him through a friend, Austin is the most trusted trading expert who helped the life of my family and I ,
Germany Austria Are the best parts of the tour
I was stationed in Berlin and Bayreuth 1975-1978. Many of us veterans stationed in Germany love and miss it. Going back in 42 days

These are terrific and instructive talks. Thanks Rick !
Munich is a great city I refer to it as “the city of sweethearts in Europe”
I always enjoyed watching all of Rick Steves Travel guides on Channel 9.
😂 I watched it on channel 9 as well but in San Antonio
Loved it. On weekends we used to go south through Frankfurt to Rudesheim am Rhein, then take the road up all the way to Koblenz. Good times and good food. Amazing scenery.
Thank you for all the inspiration over the years Rick! All the best! :)

Yes I am from Germany. And yes you are so right. There are more and more speed limits on the Autobahn's, which means freeway's.

8:25. A.K.A Mainhattan. After the River Main (Frankfurt's full name is Frankfurt am Main - Frankfurt on the River Main).
32:02 don't miss the Miniatur-Wunderland, the most famous tourist attraction in all Germany. And the Elbphilharmonie is worth a visit on the viewing platform.
the most famous tourist attraction in all Germany.....so ein Unsinn

Dinkelsbuehl …. my Hometown

57:00 Of course we do have speed limits! 🙄
Whenever rick mentions ‘Hallstatt’....his eyes light up and levitates a few mm’s off the ground.
Oh what a beautiful
surprised to hear the comment about Germans being told by their doctors to spend a month in Black Forrest - he seems more genuine on the travel videos..
Rick said that we could visit there in 2020. UNFORTUNATELY ,he was wrong
I grew up in Dinkelsbuehl
😍😍😍😍😍
The new town hall actually wasn’t destroyed that hard.
it’s kind of funny how almost all tourism is based in medieval nostalgia. nobody is traveling across the globe to see a big postmodernist glass and steel skyscraper hahahaha
It's not funny, it's just not true. So many people go to Manhattan, Chicago and Dubai to do exactly that.

always so weird how the americans need to give foreign cities a english name.
It's the price for English adopting foreign words and often their phonetic spelling maybe?
Everybody does that. Look at the names given to Germany in other languages:
🇩🇪 Deutschland
🇪🇸 Alemania
🇸🇪 Tyskland
🇫🇮 Saksa
🏴 Germany
🇨🇿 Nēmecko
السلام عليكم
Vienna is the best city in Europe...
Deutschland 🇩🇪 the best
I don't care what you say....I am NEVER going to get on any train in Germany...nope....
Why not? Better than the trains in Japan
