You got something important wrong here. The Albrechtsburg is not Germany's oldest castle, there are many much older castles in Germany, it was Germany's first palace. And that is the special thing about it, because only in the late Middle Ages the rulers and very rich began to built large homes not to be protected and to sit out something like a siege in safety, but to live in a home that is just beautiful, artful and luxurious.
Oh the confusion with castle (Burg) and castle (Schloss), it took me a second to get that difference. If you want to call it 'oldest' it would have been more understandable if you said palace, chateau, residence or manor house. It is not the oldest castle (Burg) in Germany, however the oldest castle (Schloss) in Germany ;)
@@DWTravel a Burg = castle is simular to a fortress and has a military and strategic purpose. In Germany you will easily find a Burg or a Burg ruin which is older than the one in Meißen. A Schloss = palace or chateau has a residential and representative character. Sometimes there are fluid boundaries and this might be the case in Meißen as well: former castles were remodelled to serve as a residence etc. The period in the 19th century can be particularly tricky, when there was a romantic view towards the Middle ages. It became fashionable to build residences which look like castles or using architectural fearutes of castle. But all there defense features are fake and for pure decoration only: Schloss Wernigerode in the Harz mountains, Schloss Marienburg near Hannover or Neuschwanstein in Bavaria to name a few. Anyhow, Albrechsburg is regarded to be the oldest "Schloss" in what is today Germany, but it is not the oldest castle or Burg.
I love the D /W travel and news programming, one of the best in the world. I was stationed with US Air Force in Europe for 10 years in the eighties. The happiest time of my life. I really need to check out the eastern part of Germany.
This was an exceptional work! I have always heard of Meissen porcelain so this was interesting to me. The beautiful Late Gothic architecture was exceptional as well. I hope to visit the Dresden and Leipzig area in the coming months as it is one area of Germany I haven't visited. Great video.
Don’t miss Radebeul! There you can find the traces of the man who invented Winnetou and Old Shatterhand! And if you have some time left, go to Görlitz and from there to Herrenhut. Buy you one of the Herrenhuter Stars, it’s one of the very few authentic souvenirs from Germany, and when you hang up this star in Christmas time you will always remember .
lol i live here and worked right in front of the Castle in a Hotel. Its my Hometown. Sometimes i smoke a fiew joints with friends on the castles front yard, Amazing view. haha
Some cities, such as Meissen, were largely spared from the air raids in WW II- but there are of course some cities that were badly affected - there the old structures were partially restored.
I'm an Australian, watching because my great great grandfather was a German scientist who helped improve German porcelain. We are related to the von Westphalens also, but I don't know if it is the same family as from Meissen.
You must be proud of your ancestor. If you have the opportunity you should definitely visit the city of Meissen. There is a very good porcelain museum there.
Hello, I love your video and your style. Your "Green" partner is pretty awesome as well :). I am now a "Hannah Hummel" fan :) !!!!! BTW, I visit Germany every chance that I get and I will certainly visit Meissen thanks to you. O am actually hosting a UA-cam meetup on 1 July 2023 in Heidelberg and I will do my best to visit Meissen before I head back to the US. :) !!
Im Prinzip ein sehr schöner Beitrag. Allerdings sind die Lauf- und Fahrwege so wirr zusammen geschnitten, dass es einem als Ortskundigem ganz schwindelig wird 🧐
You did an exceptionel job, dear Hannah. Why do I know that for sure? I am one of the inhabitants of this most beautiful city in Germany. Its very elating to go fishing at the river Elbe and enjoy this splendid cityside and landscape. Thanks Hannah for this little documentary. If you visit again, let me know. So I can show you a lot of other interesting things, you didnt mention yet. ;-) God bless you!
Now that's a tricky one. In German, there are two meanings for a ‘castle’. One is a "Burg" (a fortress, built for protection) and one is a "Schloss"(a palace with playfull architecture, gardens, etc.) And to make it even more complicated: The differences sometimes blur.. But if we start from this definition above, Albrechtsburg Castle is indeed the oldest German castle (Palace) . 😅😉
@@DWTravel Thanks for the clarification! I had just watched the Burg Eltz video (my favorite castle), so I remember they said it was completed in 1311. But it is definitely not a Schloss. :)
You would look so pretty in an old Victorian dress. Though it's not too practical to wear all the time. I love how you like the old style fancy life. The places you visit are so cool and nice to visit with you on here.
@Polpilteus In Europe in the Middle Ages there were very many small states, some of which were enemies of each other - the best defences were large fortified buildings made of stone..🏰
That's right. Since this is a travel channel we covered the more obvious touristic aspects of Meissen. Hahnemann and his life in Meissen is rather a side aspect in the city from our point of view. Greetings!
Kinda sucks and discouraging that the guy at the beginning, the tour guide and the museum manager could not speak English and had to be dubbed, given that they work in the tourist industry 🙄
Oh come on...how can you make docu-material like this...voice-overs will always be something not to trust! Even media does it, so its not reliable. Let the man speak and put translation on it, that's the least you can do.
@Sophie Snow "even media does it s o it its not reliable." That does not make any sense, don't you think. If you wish subs instead of voice overs- fair enough, we'll discuss it.

Burg is a castle,,,Schloss is a Palace,,,there is a BIG difference

When looking at old buildings in Germany I’d like to know, were they rebuilt or were they untouched from the war?
Some cities, such as Meissen, were largely spared from the air raids in WW II- but there are of course some cities that were badly affected - there the old structures were partially restored.
What amazingly invaluable informative fuel to my research of fine porcelain, can't thank you enough!
Amazing video, as always! I live in Dresden since past 3 years and haven't visted Meissen. I plan to visit it in early Feb

Strange translation. The lady is saying pomegranate in German when describing the porcelain pattern, but the English translation is saying melon.
Well, she's actually saying "These aren't actually onions, they are melons(...)and every now and then a pomegranate. " Watch again 👉 11:00
