THANK YOU Rick Steves!!! I have admired you ever since I bought Europe Through the Back Door in the 90's! You have taken your platform and risen up to an even higher level at this critical time in our country. Please keep it up- we need you!! Living and traveling abroad has completely changed my perspective on the world and opened my eyes and heart to so many people and places. If more Americans would get out of the country and travel I think things could start to change in a very positive direction. I will share this with everyone I know. Thank you for being such an inspiration!!

Mark Twain once said, “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.”

A must see for all those who think USA is #1 without ever going out of their state, let alone the country. They need to see what other countries have done and what works. Too bad our politicians have brainwashed some of us into believing we are the best . We could learn a thing or two from other countries, in addition to humility.. well done Rick. Something you need to view a few times to catch all the information that he has such a command of.

I think the US is the best place for me, because many other countries have laws that I don't agree with, and the US seems to have gotten many of those laws in my eyes. I don't think that any country is perfect. But I think that it's wrong that people are demonized for liking where they live, because some people like other places more.

Plus, also realize that he travels with an entourage of people, not like the average cocky young person who travels today, who also thinks to be invincible. He stays in great hotels, not hostels, and probably rarely takes public transportation. I have heard him talk about how people just love him and treat him great wherever he goes. He actually eluded a few times that they knew who he was. That is not typical of every traveler. For the rest of us, we receive a different treatment. I do notice a difference in the country though. People are nicer there. But as for the cities, I notice how impatient and rude the business owners are. I have family there so I have also heard the comments as I walked away a few times, not knowing I understood.
I'm not dissing travel, but I feel he was very irresponsible, making it sound like it's completely danger -free.

I think for the storytelling it is easier to speak of Europe as one society. There is a big difference within Europe and between countries and wealth that has also to do with political instances and tax paying mentality or more or less corruption of the country. From North to South and from West to Eash there are quit big differences even between local regions and cities. But there are hard working europeans everywhere that make long days, like you. Greetings from Switzerland.

I do not have a passport. I have traveled some around the globe in the 80s, alone, on business, with little time to be a tourist. Yes, it changes perspectives. Today, I have no expectations that I can afford to travel to Chicago much less anywhere in Europe. Most of my friends are in the same boat. I suppose I could buy Rick's books about travel but that seems like rubbing it in that I am too poor to enjoy life like rich people apparently do. That is BS of course. You know what? I appreciate very much all your comments on going outside your comfort zone, and the fear that is pervading so much of the U.S. now. But, I wish you hadn't added the blaming phrase that most of the fear is in the middle of the U.S. where people don't have passports. That is part of the dialog we are having that is not helpful. And in my experience, it is not true. I have driving alone, in my VW camper van, all over the middle of the U.S., most recently September 2018. I did not find more fear there than I am finding here in NYC, where everyone I know has a passport. Same for when I lived on the west coast--lots of fear and loathing as well. I don't want to hear any group called names or blamed in broad strokes, or ridiculed. It doesn't help.

15:08 “What was the environment that made Hitler possible.” What made Hitler possible was the proliferation of pacifism among the intelligentsia in France and Britain on the heels of WWI. This pacifism spread throughout larger society and its leadership during the 20’s and 30’s. Its ultimate effect was France and Britain doing nothing when Germany reoccupied the Rhineland, or when Hitler initiated the bloodless conquests of Austria and Czechoslovakia. The atrocities of WWII would not have been possible without this pacifism on behalf of France and Britain (Chamberlain, not Churchill).
Also, regarding the industriousness of the US, it’s easy for Europeans to be so lackadaisical in their lifestyle when they can piggyback off our hard work. The US is responsible the the vast majority of technological advances in virtually every sector of the global economy. We also provide military protection for much of Europe should a real war ever breakout. Europeans mocking our work ethic is like a 13-year-old being confused as to why his parents work so hard while he lives in their house rent free.

Hmmm....if travel goes down, so do Rick Steves book sales, right?
My family is from Italy, and I can tell you, as much as I love the country, when it comes to service with a smile, I can't wait to come to America. People are downright rude in most of Europe...not just France ;) I speak Italian and I know what they say when I walk away. This happens in ALL countries, as I have friends from other countries who say the same.
How can Rick preach safety when he travels with a camera crew, stays in fine hotels, and probably rarely takes public transportation? To me his preaching is irresponsible considering the thousands of young adults who feel invincible today. The ones camping out, staying in hostels, or those who apartment share.
But again, it all comes down to the bottom line. I wish he wouldn't have politicized himself.
