  • Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2002 | In Munich, where locals specialize in good living, we visit boisterous markets and go-for-Baroque palaces, while office workers surf in the Isar River. Heading into the foothills of the Alps, we tour the fairy-tale castles of "Mad" King Ludwig, and climb to the highest point in Germany atop the Zugspitze. Then we cross into Tirol to conquer a desolate ruined castle. #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #munich

    I lived in Bavaria (Augsburg) for 3 years while in the US Army. You cannot appreciate its beauty until you see it in person. The German people are very proud of their country and they are very environmentally conscious. The cities are very clean and the people very warm. Munich has so much history. Someday, I hope to make it back.

    Bavaria is absolutely stunning. I was there 30 years ago. I visited the castles of Ludwig II. I remember sitting on the balcony of my hotel at night, looking out to see both Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles light up at night. It really felt magical. I've been to Munich twice and it is such a great city. Would love to go back.

    Visited Munchen once recently and to me it was the nicest town in Germany (been to different parts over the years). One striking feature is that every eatery has beer and every time you eat you've gotta drink different beers in humongous mugs. Another striking fact is that no matter how many beers you drink a day, you never get drunk, unlike American beer, flat but alcoholic. A third striking feature is that the typical German (or what they consider Bavarian) homes are located in a small part of the town, the rest are typical new European design like boxed multi storey apartment buildings, each of different colors. The Marienplatz is the hub for people and is the main attraction for everyone.

      @Themightyfinder1 9 років тому +4

      Well, I personally think Berlin is terrible compared to Munich ;-) And I know many other folks from Berlin who share my opinion. So what exactly makes you think that yours is the right one? I guess it really is a matter of personal favor.

    • @Themightyfinder1
      @Themightyfinder1 9 років тому +3

      Well, I could at least give the same amount of arguments pro Munich and contra Berlin. But like I said, it is simply pointless to discuss something that completely basics on personal favor and preferences. Therefore, I find it somehow wrong to tell somebody "this is the better city because xxx...". Just let them find out for themselves :)

      I was in Berlin several years ago my previous visit to that was many years before the Berlin Wall came down. I was amazed at the changes that had already been made and the way this great capital city was being returned to its former glory.
      I wouldn't even attempt to compare Munich with Berlin both have their own attractions and I would urge people to visit both.
      If you visit Berlin then prior to your visit go on the internet and book a visit to the Reichstag I gather it must be booked in advance so I was disappointed. However it is a city I plan on returning to, I want to do the river cruise along the Elbe and also repeat the Berlin city river cruise a wonderful way to see the city.

But the climate Change will give you a little chance that you can get nice weather even in November, but usually it is windy, rainy and cold +15 to -5 degrees Celsius.

    I love this man's travelogues(?). If I ever won the lottery, I would retire in Bavaria...........in the Alps, of course. When I was stationed in Germany (1980-1982), I traveled to the Alps 4 or 5 times. I remember being up in the Alps and staying at a mountaintop gasthaus and seeing all the wildflowers and feeling the ambient beauty of the place. I traveled to a small village and watched the cows return from their high pasture and the way the cattle would stop when one of them would stop and get a drink of water at a fountain. When the cow was satiated, they would continue on, cow bells and all. What an enchanting place.

    Ahhhhhh Munchen (no umlauts on my keyboard)....many fond memories ! I was there in eintuasendneunzehnhundredsechsundseibsig, for give the spelling, for a high school German class trip. I learned so much about the history and language of Germany....the rides on the Ubahn in Munchen at night was fun...we rode all over the place...you could eat off the floors back then...the Germans were extremely clean back then...I don't know about now.

      @@ameliestief3952 Imagine how Americans feel when Germans incorrectly state "facts" about the US in presentations, conferences, seminars and classes and when they destroy English words by totally replacing letters with /s/ or /z/... I can't tell you how often I cringe whilst watching 2RF or Galileo mini-docs... but guess what? We survive, and we kindly ask you to do the same. ;) Cheers!

    Rick, some recommendation. The old part of Frankfurt is highly interesting, beautiful and has lots of museums. Then the town of Koeln with roman ruins and also Aachen, the town of Charles the great, are very nice to see and have a lot of the beer culture and restaurant scenery similar to Munich. People are easygoing, like to talk with you and have a lot of humour. In Northern Germany, the towns of Goettingen, an old student town, Hamburg a wonderful sea port with some islands and a cute old town center and then Luebeck the town of the famous Marzipan are very interesting. When you travel there, you will notice that every one of them has a very special charme and also a wonderful surrounding for outdoors and sports. I highly recommend you to go there and see yourself. While the Bavarians are often a bit grouchy, you will be fascinated how kind and openhearted the middle and northern Germans are. For the eastern part of Germany I highly recommend Dresden the beautiful city of the Saxonian emperors and Berlin for the landscape around, the music, the theatres, the culture and also the old city centre. All of them are worthwhile to see and stay for several days.
