Plus Donnie Yen himself grew up doing martial arts -Tai chi, boxing, taekwondo. Bet wasn't that difficult for him, just that film needs him to look cool so some of the movements are not realistic but he still kickass in real life.
Fun fact: That kick by Adkins to Donnie's throat at 3:40 was 100% real, he accidentally kicked him hard in the throat instead of cutting the kick short, and really hurt Donnie, so they kept it in the scene. Badasses both of them :D
I think it's great when the people involved in a fight scene choose to allow their mishaps into the scene because it adds to the intensity instead of wanting to cut it out of the film because of actual injury and other personal reasons. That's dedication to the big picture of great film making beyond selfishness. Props to all stuntmen who take this route.

I didn't say I WANT people to get hurt, but they are taking risks and even the best rehearsed scene between top performers has a chance of going sideways. They know this risk and they do everything to avoid serious injuries. All I was saying is that when a real injury occurs and the stuntmen are okay with it being in the film, it's a unique and generous thing if it's the best looking take of that particular event that went wrong.
@@heavysystemsinc. I saw a sensei of mine go accidentally full contact on his wife knee her in the chest,who is in the same master class as him. He tried to apologize to her,during sparing demo. But she let him have it with kick to his elbow lol. I was watching both their reactions(others thought it just a demo full contact) but its the eyes I watched out for and they change with intensity :o
What's all the more perfect in this movie is that they make it perfectly clear that he's past his prime, sick and getting worse. It adds a lot of tension to the fight.
I like that he only seems to struggle in certain areas tho (mainly kicks to the mid section) while still maintaining his pin point precision near his head deflecting almost every strike in that area. Makes it perfectly clear that age is taking its toll but hes still got a lot of fight in him and a few fine tricks up his sleeve
I started boxing training aged 10, moved on to Karate, kick boxing, and did some savate. Watch Donnie Yen's blocking techniques... Brilliant! P.S. I am now 67 still go running and can still do hand-stand push ups. Never stop training guys.
That ending maneuverer with the finger poke to the throat is threatened so hard in the films with Ip Man pausing moments before contact 'cause he knows this move is the perfect finishing move and can potentially kill that person by crushing the windpipe with the concentrated and excessive force applied. It's a great scene and the only time you'll see him use this move to end a fight indefinitely.

Tips to retain young, eat enough meat & vege on time, sleep enough daily on time, exercise, don't let the waist go big, don't let the face get skinny and you'll look 40's forever apart from genetic factor. As for shoes on mat, no issue with that as long as it's clean without 💩, mud. If possible, have more no rules fight like this. Looking at this fight scene, in reality Ip Man would have been killed by the drill master sarge that is wearing standard army boots with hardened toes and tougher bottom. Whereas Ip Man was wearing old Chinese cloth shoes with real thin bottom pad that stepping on nail would penetrate into feet. Few times Ip Man didn't guard his head would be fatal. This Ip Man 4 movie trying hard to protect McDojo corrupted kungfu by the way where Donnie downgraded himself to please McDojo group. I am with team Kungfu but I hate McDojo kungfu that removed almost all the syllabus needed for fighting. As for you, fix the way you hold fist 👊🏼✊🏼 where thumb and last finger don't stick out like Bruce Lee.
4:14 Don't know if you saw the entire movie yet, but they really showcased the fact that Ip Man is getting older and also he was injured a few times during his fights and sparring from earlier in the film. He's taking the guy on literally with a few bruises, breathing difficulties (lung cancer), and old age.
But at the same time he took so many powerful hits to his torso that his ribs should be shattered in 1000 pieces. Not to mention that intense flying kick and the follow up to his right elbow should've crippled IP mans left arm. Age was also only for narrative purposes.
5:10 I feel like this exemplifies the principle of jeet kun do. He anticipates the coming kick early enough to aggressively step in, blocking the kick and unsettling his opponent's base with a jab to the knee at the same time. That high tempo play to maintain control and disrupt the opponent from any follow-up feels like what I imagine Jeet Kun Do to be about.
Donnie Yen, Tony Jaa, Scot Adkins and Michael Jai White are 4 of the best martial arts practitioners i could watch for hours on end! nothing but respect!
When you referred to the hard kick hurting Ip Mans left arm, it was because he had suffered an injury to it earlier in the film. Absolutely love Donnie Yen and the Ip Man films and adding Scott Adkins to this film, especially this end fight made it oh so all the better! - Scott Adkins should have so many more bigger parts in films.
I rly love this fight, Both Scot and Donnie are amazing. I only wish those 2 actors could meet ouside of Ip Man movies, since Donnie loves to kick and he cannot do many fancy ones in this franchise.

Ip used that against General Miura in the first movie, although in a different form. When he punched the General against that iron structure, the rebound send the General forward again, presumably with his throat right into Ip's nukite (the name of that technique in karate, I don't know its name in Wing Chun). Imagine getting punched in the head, hitting your head on an iron pilar and getting your throat smashed in, all in the span of a second. General Miura was a good fighter, but never stood a chance against Ip Man.

Miura's forward momentum stops right in front of Ip's fingers, or he comes to rest on them perfectly with no damage, followed by Ip closing his fist. I think it's meant to show not only Ip's superiority and mastery, but also his restraint with an outmatched, antagonistic, but still honorable opponent.

because the purpose of martial arts itself is not about beating the opponent. its about training yourself to a greater height as a martial artist and a human being. as far as i know, a martial art or should i say in chinese legend, kung-fu is to protect yourself. and i think from that point, its clear that it is not meant to bully people but to protect.
@@giovannikelvin133 I disagree... Point of martial art is to defeat the enemy. Martial art that fails to achieve that is a failure. As long as you are the one standing you are good, bettering yourself is an ideal a very good one don't get me wrong, but one that has no impact on the actual fight. Also in reality the soldier would hammer on the guy when he was knocked down to finish the job but its a movie so I guess plot...
Chain punching is a part of wing chun kung fu that I don't think any other style has, and it is incredibly effective. Each punch doesn't swing with centrifugal force like a roundhouse punch; it has the elbow directly behind it, so it's like a comparison between swinging to hit with the side of the bat vs thrusting the end of the bat into someone's face. It moves the shortest distance over a straight line so it's very quick; and the back guard land is instantly loaded for the next punch, so you can rapid-chain-punch an incredible number of times (as long as your knuckles can take the impact) in a very short period. Use that to target a number of weak spots in rapid succession, it can do a lot of damage. I did feel like this fight was drawn out a bit long though; Ip Man took a lot more hits than he should have and missed some opportunities to leg-sweep his opponent during all those kicks. He could have targeted his opponent's vulnerable points a lot earlier and finished the fight sooner. It makes for good drama though :)
Ya there are "dirty tricks" in Wingchun such as eye and throat poking, groin kicking. Those skills are for desperate moments during real fights to cripple your stronger opponents fast in order to save yourself.
some of these are death blows,and for real a super trained in excellent shape opponent is damn hard to bring down,esp when almost equal,donnie has a perfect defense and this is what makes him superior,his defense is undeniably damn close to perfect,scot adkins is a speed anihilator,he goes for the quick take down,i like both of them,in real life these are very dangerous men,basically untouchable
Oh ok! This movie definitely was awesome and fun, even if historically wrong because Ip Man never left China. The premise of the movie is that Ip man tried to teach martial arts and Sergeant Geddes holds Chinese low class, disrespecting their kung fu styles and techniques. @@roygriscom4901 Yip Man never moved to New York. He only ever lived in two cities his entire life, Foshan and Hong Kong. He passed away in Hong Kong in the late 70s. Some of his students moved to New York, like Moy Yat, but Yip Man never even visited America. And Bruce? He moved to San Francisco in 1959 and left for Seattle shortly thereafter. Again not new york.
@@ISZAudio Everything correct, but Lee actually moved to the Seattle area first, st the age of 18, to study at University of WA. That was in 1959. In 1966 is when they moved to Los Angeles for his acting career.

He moved to San Francisco (which isn't LA) first and lived on Jackson Street for around 6 months before heading up to Seattle. I can say this with confidence because my Sifu knew him. They both went to St Francis Xavier in Hong Kong, trained at Yip Man's school, and left for San Francisco around the same time. Maybe a 2 week gap or so. Bruce left first but got to SF later because he took a boat while Sifu flew. They lived on the same street and used to get together to practice their Wing Chun or go chacha dancing. After 6ish months, Sifu went to Florida to go to university, and Bruce left for Seattle not long after, which is when they fell out of contact.

The fight great. They said Ip Man was meant to be in his 60s or 70s in that fight and also he has cancer and he was past his prime when fighting Geddes making this fight a lot harder for IP Man to overcome.

What makes it more impressive for Ip Man/Donnie Yen is that earlier in the movie, he got his hand slammed in a fence really hard. Like an industrial steel fence with those rectangular bars, not chainlink. So he's been fighting with an injured left hand for basically half the movie.
I’ve watched movie 1, 2, and 3 but not 4. The fight was awesome and music too. It’s like listening to the sound of machine gun firing (5:27). I hope some day to learn martial arts. Also Max send you some videos from a movie for you watch and rate.
We all knew who's going to win the fight. When I watched this movie I was actrually hoping Geddes win dishonorably and lost repect by his men. It would be a freshing ending and carry deeper meaning.
My favorite part of this fight is how its different from the standard flow of martial art movie final battles. Normally the way it works is, the hero gets his butt kicked, then he gets back up, he is determined, and he proceeds to dominate the fight. That didnt happen here. Right up till the last shot the fight outcome was still in doubt. Well not really since its a movie and we all know how it will end, but from an objective standpoint, they were beating the heck out of each other back and forth and were pretty close to evenly matched. Donnie was landing more shots, but his opponent was doing more damage per hit.
The reason for the cyclic punching is to expend less energy but also to create devastating impact. To create an anology between it. It's like a jackhammer hitting the same spot and breaking through concrete. These punches (if you receive one after the other and depending on whose delivering it) are absolutely devastating.
This is the best fight in the whole series and I’m not exaggerating here this is wing chin vs American style karate here ,after this Ip man 3 second best of the series wing chin vs wing chin against master Z.
2:35 You mean chi sao? It is just a drill yes. To learn reflexes and to do techniques properly. And to use both arms for something different. You simply start by having both trainees go through a simple repeating sequence of perpetual motion of attack and defense. And you keep following that pattern responding to the attacker in the pattern. (The one doing the next attacking motion directs it, sometimes goes faster, uses more force or less, maybe they step.) It's simple repetition. Until one of the two changes it, unannounced. Maybe because they feel the other person is not doing it proper. Or because they want to attempt something. That is when you have to respond. Not to what you see, but by noticing the change in pressure or motion to your arm. Once the trainees are a little familiar with it, it is often done blindfolded. You cannot just depend on your eyes to keep track of elbows, recognize things and process it in sparring or a fight. You want it to be reflexes on touch. So you learn to respond simply by the change in how the structure of the opponent feels. It is nothing spiritual or fancy. But if you train it a while, you get very fast to know how someone attempts to move from the moment of contact. Or if their defense is actually proper or not. They do not assume that in some fight you would have your arms glued together. It's about reflex on moment of contact. For instance, if you hit and someone blocks or directs but is too relaxed is easy to hit through their defense. Too tense, is easy to get off balance. Too far out, is weak and off balance. Too far in, is weak and gives you room. For instance, if you use bong sao (turn arm around the forearm/wrist letting the elbow raise still below shoulder but bit above wrist with a forward motion and relaxed hand in a bit of corkscrew motion (much like how you would naturally respond to someone swinging a stick at you from above)) as a temporary defense, and you feel the attacker push a little harder than normal with their attack against your bong sao, you can have the bong sao collapse into an elbow strike while stepping in. If you can do this as a reflex, you can get the opponent to even lean into your elbow. There are hundreds of things like that, that you can train in chi sao. That is why it is done a lot. And honestly I don't understand why this training method is not used much more in other martial arts. Maybe because it's so misunderstood. 5:50 The chain punch is really overused in movies. It is simply a thing you could use to disorient your opponent or stop them in their tracks or get them off balance. This is why a chain punch is often a leadup to a kick, or an elbow if unguarded. It is at least as far as I know not used to really murder someone. It is very difficult to recover from someone doing a chain punch effectively because they are very disorienting, psychologically bad and frustrating and it can still seriously injure you along the centerline. Also while the chain punch is going, the attacker is often in control of the center line, meaning it is relatively easy for the attacker to defend against any offensive attempt by the defender. It is interesting how Ip Man in these movies uses the chain punch to the chest a lot. I am more familiar to hitting the face. (Hitting to the chest was mostly out of a necessity or to train each other for balanced stance/movement.) Even if guarded, if you can get the opponent to cross their arms a little bit they are done. You can sometimes do this by moving diagonally while executing a quick chain punch out of nowhere with the arm that is on the side to which you move(!) leading. Typically what you want to learn with chain punching is to break the chain punch up (Something I don't see Ip Man movies do, ever?): If the opponent uses an arm to block a punch, you tug the arm down while the next punch is landing. If it's the same side arm, you will likely get the opponent to cross the arms a little while moving, leading you to control both arms with one, while landing the punches. At that point the opponent can either move back, which you follow for elbow, or they can kick, which is why you normally narrow the distance to elbow or kick.
That was monumental, I was wondering if they would resort to ner lethal hits like that, Donie was outweighed and needed to try something drastic in the nether regions like that.
Reminder: Donnie Yen was in his 50s when this movie was filming. FUcking legend! And Scott Adkins I think was in his very late 30s or even 40. Absolute badasses!
You all should watch some of Donnie Yen's older movie when he was super young and in his prime. He was cut and muscular as hell back in the 1980s to 1990s. Donnie Yen use to be a body builder and was more build than Bruce Lee!
So true about blocking. In a school, we had some boxing, but we just weren't grown enough to hit that hard. Later on after becoming adult, I did spar with my friend who was practicing kickboxing and oh boy, blocking doesn't change the fact that you feel like being hit by a truck. Once I felt like my forearm might break from those kicks.
about taking kicks, I accidently knocked a guy down in sparring, it was not a hard(ofc im a heavyweight so my leg still weigh a bit) kick, I did it fast and slowed it down before impact, did the whole spin and came around and saw him sitting down on the floor, I asked him what happened and he said he blocked it, I asked him if he wanted help getting up and he asked me "what?" so I understood something had happened. Apparently others who saw it said he indeed blocked it, but he did a one arm block, not two and I guess the impact was still enough to put him down and confuse him so yea I respect kicks even more after that happened :o btw this was also with shin guards ofc

I've heard Scott say that after the eye rake he throws a back kick and Donnie was a bit closer than Scott thought he would be and the back kick hit Donnie directly in the throat and Scott was like oh shit and they had to retake it but apparently they used the throat kick in the edit
Yeah. Scott Atkins did an episode of Stuntmen React with the Corridor Crew and told that story there. From the sound of it he got him pretty good. And on an unrelated note... I had no clue Scott Atkins was such a hilarious guy. Like... it is astounding how he's not at the level of guys like Keanu Reeves or the other big name action guys. Clearly the dude has a crazy work ethic and is a personable guy that people probably love working with.

I wonder if there's any kinda symbolic decision on the director's part in deciding that this fight scene is the one where Ip Man finally goes all in with the darting fingers to the throat. Every fight before where he darts, he always held back, probably out of respect or acknowledgement of some background consequence going on in the plot, or to show off.
While doing the final fight scene Scott kicked at Donnie's neck by mistake but he was completely scared of getting punches,kicks or strikes until this scene ends. He said that Donnie just forgive me otherwise wouldn't have chance to get out without busting my ass.
And imagine that Donnie Yen was only allowed to use Wing Chun in the IP man franchises. He knows more martial arts, including Jeet Kune Do. So if he would mix that up - imagine what that would've been. Scott is an amazing fighter and as Boyka one my all time favorites, though. It's only scripted that he had to lose. I bet the fight would've been alot more different had Scott be allowed other moves too. Two amazing martial artists and actors.
@@pangzhiyu8098 Yes, I know that. But it has "fixed" some stuff that Wing Chun lacked or just didn't had in their arsenal. It was also influenced with other combat styles to meet more modern way of fighting.
@@RazorNLD Yes, I agree. As I said, mainly the fists, the foot work and kickcs follows a completely different philosophy. That being said, Ip Man's Wing Chun wasn't even the classical one to begin with, that would be Cheung Tin-chi's Wing Chun. Ip Man's Wing Chun is actually really different from the classic one.
Fun fact: IRL Ip Man was 70/71 in 1964 when this film was set. His wife, with whom he had fled to Hong Kong from the Maoists not the Japanese, was also separated from him (by closed borders) from 1951 until her death in 1960. So she was not with him in the periods covered by the second and third films. Ip Man instead had a mistress from Shanghai, with whom he had a child in this period, which was why a number of his earlier students left him. His two sons only joined him from China after 1962, as the Cultural Revolution started, already aged 38 and 26 respectively (so would not have been with their father in the second and third films). They would be 40 and 28 in Ip Man 4. Both the oldest son, Ip Chun, who advised on and appears in some of the films, and his brother, Ip Ching, who features in IM4 as the rebellious student, fell out with their father. Ip Man left the family home but continued to teach lessons there. Needless to say, he did not travel to the States to fight for the honour of an errant student son. Still, a fun film if, like the previous ones, carefully designed to fashion a new Chinese hero, bash the usual stereotypical enemies (Brits, Japs and Yanks) and use the traditional martial arts (despite the Communists banning them) as a Chinese cultural brand for export.
In summary: big buff military dude beats up old chinese man for the first minute and then proceeded to get his elbow dislocated and poked in the throat

Really enjoy watching your martial arts breakdown videos, excellent job. I highly recommend you watch the fight scene between Tony Jaa and Marrese Crump. And excellent fight scene and very well-choreographed between two REALLY talented martial artists.
I counted at least 3 shots that - had Ip Man been hit that hard in that spot, would've ended the fight (I don't care how tough you are). In particular, the kick to the ribs (with a combat boot on) towards the end of the fight. There's just no way you get back up and rally after a shot like that. In US law that is considered assault with a deadly weapon - because kicking the ribs of someone on the ground is absolutely lethal.

ip was also injured from his arm taking that heavy fence to the arm in the one part where he really moves his arm over to cover the injured arm . thats why that multiple kicks to the side where he is forced to block with his injured fore arm

I didn't say I WANT people to get hurt, but they are taking risks and even the best rehearsed scene between top performers has a chance of going sideways. They know this risk and they do everything to avoid serious injuries. All I was saying is that when a real injury occurs and the stuntmen are okay with it being in the film, it's a unique and generous thing if it's the best looking take of that particular event that went wrong.

But she let him have it with kick to his elbow lol. I was watching both their reactions(others thought it just a demo full contact) but its the eyes I watched out for and they change with intensity :o
What's all the more perfect in this movie is that they make it perfectly clear that he's past his prime, sick and getting worse. It adds a lot of tension to the fight.
I like that he only seems to struggle in certain areas tho (mainly kicks to the mid section) while still maintaining his pin point precision near his head deflecting almost every strike in that area. Makes it perfectly clear that age is taking its toll but hes still got a lot of fight in him and a few fine tricks up his sleeve
He also does have a tumor so obviously hes way past his prime hes also hurt his arm from getting it trapped in that gate
I started boxing training aged 10, moved on to Karate, kick boxing, and did some savate. Watch Donnie Yen's blocking techniques... Brilliant!

That ending maneuverer with the finger poke to the throat is threatened so hard in the films with Ip Man pausing moments before contact 'cause he knows this move is the perfect finishing move and can potentially kill that person by crushing the windpipe with the concentrated and excessive force applied. It's a great scene and the only time you'll see him use this move to end a fight indefinitely.

4:14 Don't know if you saw the entire movie yet, but they really showcased the fact that Ip Man is getting older and also he was injured a few times during his fights and sparring from earlier in the film. He's taking the guy on literally with a few bruises, breathing difficulties (lung cancer), and old age.
But at the same time he took so many powerful hits to his torso that his ribs should be shattered in 1000 pieces. Not to mention that intense flying kick and the follow up to his right elbow should've crippled IP mans left arm. Age was also only for narrative purposes.

5:10 I feel like this exemplifies the principle of jeet kun do. He anticipates the coming kick early enough to aggressively step in, blocking the kick and unsettling his opponent's base with a jab to the knee at the same time. That high tempo play to maintain control and disrupt the opponent from any follow-up feels like what I imagine Jeet Kun Do to be about.
Donnie Yen, Tony Jaa, Scot Adkins and Michael Jai White are 4 of the best martial arts practitioners i could watch for hours on end! nothing but respect!

Absolutely love Donnie Yen and the Ip Man films and adding Scott Adkins to this film, especially this end fight made it oh so all the better! - Scott Adkins should have so many more bigger parts in films.
That is the problem when he watches these clips rather than the whole movies - a lot of the context is missing. Too bad he doesn't have enough time.

Ip used that against General Miura in the first movie, although in a different form.
When he punched the General against that iron structure, the rebound send the General forward again, presumably with his throat right into Ip's nukite (the name of that technique in karate, I don't know its name in Wing Chun).
Imagine getting punched in the head, hitting your head on an iron pilar and getting your throat smashed in, all in the span of a second.
General Miura was a good fighter, but never stood a chance against Ip Man.

because the purpose of martial arts itself is not about beating the opponent. its about training yourself to a greater height as a martial artist and a human being. as far as i know, a martial art or should i say in chinese legend, kung-fu is to protect yourself. and i think from that point, its clear that it is not meant to bully people but to protect.

Chain punching is a part of wing chun kung fu that I don't think any other style has, and it is incredibly effective. Each punch doesn't swing with centrifugal force like a roundhouse punch; it has the elbow directly behind it, so it's like a comparison between swinging to hit with the side of the bat vs thrusting the end of the bat into someone's face. It moves the shortest distance over a straight line so it's very quick; and the back guard land is instantly loaded for the next punch, so you can rapid-chain-punch an incredible number of times (as long as your knuckles can take the impact) in a very short period. Use that to target a number of weak spots in rapid succession, it can do a lot of damage.
I did feel like this fight was drawn out a bit long though; Ip Man took a lot more hits than he should have and missed some opportunities to leg-sweep his opponent during all those kicks. He could have targeted his opponent's vulnerable points a lot earlier and finished the fight sooner. It makes for good drama though :)
Ya there are "dirty tricks" in Wingchun such as eye and throat poking, groin kicking. Those skills are for desperate moments during real fights to cripple your stronger opponents fast in order to save yourself.

Oh ok! This movie definitely was awesome and fun, even if historically wrong because Ip Man never left China. The premise of the movie is that Ip man tried to teach martial arts and Sergeant Geddes holds Chinese low class, disrespecting their kung fu styles and techniques.

And Bruce? He moved to San Francisco in 1959 and left for Seattle shortly thereafter. Again not new york.

"actually" nah, you're wrong. He moved to San Francisco (which isn't LA) first and lived on Jackson Street for around 6 months before heading up to Seattle. I can say this with confidence because my Sifu knew him. They both went to St Francis Xavier in Hong Kong, trained at Yip Man's school, and left for San Francisco around the same time. Maybe a 2 week gap or so.
Bruce left first but got to SF later because he took a boat while Sifu flew.
They lived on the same street and used to get together to practice their Wing Chun or go chacha dancing. After 6ish months, Sifu went to Florida to go to university, and Bruce left for Seattle not long after, which is when they fell out of contact.

The fight great. They said Ip Man was meant to be in his 60s or 70s in that fight and also he has cancer and he was past his prime when fighting Geddes making this fight a lot harder for IP Man to overcome.

What makes it more impressive for Ip Man/Donnie Yen is that earlier in the movie, he got his hand slammed in a fence really hard. Like an industrial steel fence with those rectangular bars, not chainlink. So he's been fighting with an injured left hand for basically half the movie.

We all knew who's going to win the fight. When I watched this movie I was actrually hoping Geddes win dishonorably and lost repect by his men. It would be a freshing ending and carry deeper meaning.
My favorite part of this fight is how its different from the standard flow of martial art movie final battles. Normally the way it works is, the hero gets his butt kicked, then he gets back up, he is determined, and he proceeds to dominate the fight. That didnt happen here. Right up till the last shot the fight outcome was still in doubt. Well not really since its a movie and we all know how it will end, but from an objective standpoint, they were beating the heck out of each other back and forth and were pretty close to evenly matched. Donnie was landing more shots, but his opponent was doing more damage per hit.

The reason for the cyclic punching is to expend less energy but also to create devastating impact. To create an anology between it. It's like a jackhammer hitting the same spot and breaking through concrete. These punches (if you receive one after the other and depending on whose delivering it) are absolutely devastating.

To learn reflexes and to do techniques properly. And to use both arms for something different.
You simply start by having both trainees go through a simple repeating sequence of perpetual motion of attack and defense. And you keep following that pattern responding to the attacker in the pattern. (The one doing the next attacking motion directs it, sometimes goes faster, uses more force or less, maybe they step.) It's simple repetition. Until one of the two changes it, unannounced. Maybe because they feel the other person is not doing it proper. Or because they want to attempt something. That is when you have to respond. Not to what you see, but by noticing the change in pressure or motion to your arm.
Once the trainees are a little familiar with it, it is often done blindfolded. You cannot just depend on your eyes to keep track of elbows, recognize things and process it in sparring or a fight. You want it to be reflexes on touch. So you learn to respond simply by the change in how the structure of the opponent feels. It is nothing spiritual or fancy.
But if you train it a while, you get very fast to know how someone attempts to move from the moment of contact. Or if their defense is actually proper or not. They do not assume that in some fight you would have your arms glued together. It's about reflex on moment of contact. For instance, if you hit and someone blocks or directs but is too relaxed is easy to hit through their defense. Too tense, is easy to get off balance. Too far out, is weak and off balance. Too far in, is weak and gives you room.
For instance, if you use bong sao (turn arm around the forearm/wrist letting the elbow raise still below shoulder but bit above wrist with a forward motion and relaxed hand in a bit of corkscrew motion (much like how you would naturally respond to someone swinging a stick at you from above)) as a temporary defense, and you feel the attacker push a little harder than normal with their attack against your bong sao, you can have the bong sao collapse into an elbow strike while stepping in. If you can do this as a reflex, you can get the opponent to even lean into your elbow. There are hundreds of things like that, that you can train in chi sao. That is why it is done a lot. And honestly I don't understand why this training method is not used much more in other martial arts. Maybe because it's so misunderstood.
5:50 The chain punch is really overused in movies. It is simply a thing you could use to disorient your opponent or stop them in their tracks or get them off balance. This is why a chain punch is often a leadup to a kick, or an elbow if unguarded. It is at least as far as I know not used to really murder someone. It is very difficult to recover from someone doing a chain punch effectively because they are very disorienting, psychologically bad and frustrating and it can still seriously injure you along the centerline. Also while the chain punch is going, the attacker is often in control of the center line, meaning it is relatively easy for the attacker to defend against any offensive attempt by the defender.
It is interesting how Ip Man in these movies uses the chain punch to the chest a lot. I am more familiar to hitting the face. (Hitting to the chest was mostly out of a necessity or to train each other for balanced stance/movement.) Even if guarded, if you can get the opponent to cross their arms a little bit they are done. You can sometimes do this by moving diagonally while executing a quick chain punch out of nowhere with the arm that is on the side to which you move(!) leading. Typically what you want to learn with chain punching is to break the chain punch up (Something I don't see Ip Man movies do, ever?): If the opponent uses an arm to block a punch, you tug the arm down while the next punch is landing. If it's the same side arm, you will likely get the opponent to cross the arms a little while moving, leading you to control both arms with one, while landing the punches. At that point the opponent can either move back, which you follow for elbow, or they can kick, which is why you normally narrow the distance to elbow or kick.
That was monumental, I was wondering if they would resort to ner lethal hits like that, Donie was outweighed and needed to try something drastic in the nether regions like that.

So true about blocking. In a school, we had some boxing, but we just weren't grown enough to hit that hard. Later on after becoming adult, I did spar with my friend who was practicing kickboxing and oh boy, blocking doesn't change the fact that you feel like being hit by a truck. Once I felt like my forearm might break from those kicks.

about taking kicks, I accidently knocked a guy down in sparring, it was not a hard(ofc im a heavyweight so my leg still weigh a bit) kick, I did it fast and slowed it down before impact, did the whole spin and came around and saw him sitting down on the floor, I asked him what happened and he said he blocked it, I asked him if he wanted help getting up and he asked me "what?" so I understood something had happened. Apparently others who saw it said he indeed blocked it, but he did a one arm block, not two and I guess the impact was still enough to put him down and confuse him so yea I respect kicks even more after that happened :o btw this was also with shin guards ofc

I've heard Scott say that after the eye rake he throws a back kick and Donnie was a bit closer than Scott thought he would be and the back kick hit Donnie directly in the throat and Scott was like oh shit and they had to retake it but apparently they used the throat kick in the edit
Yeah. Scott Atkins did an episode of Stuntmen React with the Corridor Crew and told that story there. From the sound of it he got him pretty good. And on an unrelated note... I had no clue Scott Atkins was such a hilarious guy. Like... it is astounding how he's not at the level of guys like Keanu Reeves or the other big name action guys. Clearly the dude has a crazy work ethic and is a personable guy that people probably love working with.
Eye poke is tested in ufc, it works for self defense. Throat stab requires stationary opponent. If they move it's hard to stab.

I wonder if there's any kinda symbolic decision on the director's part in deciding that this fight scene is the one where Ip Man finally goes all in with the darting fingers to the throat. Every fight before where he darts, he always held back, probably out of respect or acknowledgement of some background consequence going on in the plot, or to show off.
While doing the final fight scene Scott kicked at Donnie's neck by mistake but he was completely scared of getting punches,kicks or strikes until this scene ends. He said that Donnie just forgive me otherwise wouldn't have chance to get out without busting my ass.

Ip Man instead had a mistress from Shanghai, with whom he had a child in this period, which was why a number of his earlier students left him. His two sons only joined him from China after 1962, as the Cultural Revolution started, already aged 38 and 26 respectively (so would not have been with their father in the second and third films). They would be 40 and 28 in Ip Man 4. Both the oldest son, Ip Chun, who advised on and appears in some of the films, and his brother, Ip Ching, who features in IM4 as the rebellious student, fell out with their father. Ip Man left the family home but continued to teach lessons there. Needless to say, he did not travel to the States to fight for the honour of an errant student son. Still, a fun film if, like the previous ones, carefully designed to fashion a new Chinese hero, bash the usual stereotypical enemies (Brits, Japs and Yanks) and use the traditional martial arts (despite the Communists banning them) as a Chinese cultural brand for export.
I think that was meant in no regulated or competition rules, as far as sportsmanship goes I believe they still showed respect for each other

Really enjoy watching your martial arts breakdown videos, excellent job. I highly recommend you watch the fight scene between Tony Jaa and Marrese Crump. And excellent fight scene and very well-choreographed between two REALLY talented martial artists.
I counted at least 3 shots that - had Ip Man been hit that hard in that spot, would've ended the fight (I don't care how tough you are).
In particular, the kick to the ribs (with a combat boot on) towards the end of the fight. There's just no way you get back up and rally after a shot like that.
In US law that is considered assault with a deadly weapon - because kicking the ribs of someone on the ground is absolutely lethal.

ip was also injured from his arm taking that heavy fence to the arm in the one part where he really moves his arm over to cover the injured arm
. thats why that multiple kicks to the side where he is forced to block with his injured fore arm

Important to note that Ip Man in the movie was fighting cancer AND with a previously injured left arm during this fight.

Just to add - Ip Man was nursing his arm which was crashed by the school gates mid-way through the film.
