Why Leeds United's Summer Is Going From Bad To Worse

  • Expressing a feeling of sympathy for Leeds United as a neutral fan is admittedly quite a controversial path to tread but I'll be honest with you, the summer Leeds fans have had could soften even the coldest of hearts towards them.
Jack Harrison has now officially made a season-long loan move to Everton, Willy Gnonto is (I believe) still refusing to play, Daniel Farke spoke about Luis Sinisterra not being available for selection after they lost at the death against Birmingham on Saturday; it all just feels as though any (possibly misguided) hopes of an immediate return to the Premier League are making their way swiftly out of the window as we edge into the final couple of weeks of the summer transfer window.
I'm intrigued to hear what Leeds fans have got to say about it all, so if you count yourself amongst that number and wouldn't mind giving me your thoughts in the comments section below, I'd be extremely grateful; as I would if you're a nurtural with a perspective on it.
    Cheers.

Another Leeds fan here and I think you have described the present situation in a balanced and professional way which is very much appreciated. The only positive I can think of out of relegation is not having to put up with the dreadful ex-Director of Football Victor Orta and his blooming stupid clauses in players’ contracts. CU back in the PL whenever that may be. Marching on Together upwards & onwards from the Basque Country!

Everton fan here and cant say I agree with how the lad is handling his situation. Everton have had this happen to us recently with TG and its never a nice place to be.
Problem we have is we are fairly skint for FFP and only so far we can stretch. Leeds want what they value him at. There isnt a queue at the door and Leeds have given players some crazy clauses (see Harrison). Not sure where this leaves the lad if it doesnt happen. But we have done this dance before with our players previously , turn the fans on them and then say we had to let them go cos what else could we do.
Whole thing is a mess and I am sure if we had more ability to be financially flexible it would be done already. But when you have both teams under FFP hammers its tricky.
Hopefully Leeds come back up regardless of whatever happens with the player.

Leeds fan here, it’s so nice to hear that you hope LUFC return to the PL next season, as all Leeds fans, I am passionate about my club, I love my club, but I fear this hope of us going up for next season is massively against us. The way things are happening with players leaving basically on a free transfer is nothing short of stunning. There isn’t a club in Europe that would’ve handed out contracts the way Orta did. At least we know why Jack Harrison was so happy in April when he signed a new contract, it was a win win situation for him.

Thank you for this balanced and well presented video. In a nutshell, Leeds have shipped out 18 players (will be 19 with Sinisterra, 20 if Gnonto goes) 8 of whom are first team squad generating a total income of €3.9m . Against that we have recruited 4 players costing €8.5m - no typos here these figures are desultory. Harrison just gone to Everton (another non-fee) on loan. Why on earth would a club do business with another club they have threatened to sue over financial irregularities? This really is a sad time to be a Leeds fan. Would be happy to avoid relegation this season. Happy to subscribe, best wishes.

For all of the loan moves thus far Leeds have had no say in. The players were given contracts allowing them to leave on loan if the club got relegated. This is all the fault of former sporting director Victor Orta who was incredibly stupid by giving away all these ridiculous contracts

‪Our fanbase tend to react very strongly to anything that happens at the club, positively and negatively. It’s what makes us one of, if not the most passionate set of supporters in the country but also leads us to react very strongly to the bad stuff. It sometimes feels like and overreaction but this time it really doesn’t. Our previous ownership along with the old DOF have really left us in a pit through their own ego and naivety. I think most of us are just in a shocked and confused state because we just don’t know what’s happening and how we’re going to recover quick enough to turn things around this season.
However I would say a lot of flack is now being thrown at certain people I don’t think deserve the level of hate that they’re now getting (49ers and Harrison specifically). While the 49ers were on the board for the last few years, they had no real control of the club and as a consequence they are now cleaning up a big mess. Harrison was one of only a few players that actually pulled their weight last season and quite frankly he does actually deserve to be playing at a higher level, just a kick in the teeth that it’s a club that were in the same situation as us last year.
I hope things turn around but I’m just very very concerned that we’re going to lose the opportunity to bounce straight back.‬

I'm on the Everton side of this story and I don't like the way Gnonto has treated Leeds. As much as I want the lad to come into the club, Leeds have reacted well in publicly showing that he will be pubishd. The same happened with Gordon and when he refused to turn up to training, I thought it would be best to cash in. Therefore, I think for Leed's season, its best to let him leave to a club to gain funds and get a player that the fans will no longer accept stuck in the club

As an Everton fan I completely respect people’s opinion I personally do think though we need to cut players some slack when they force moves. At the end of the day, clubs are no better and clubs break contracts all the time when they sack managers when they feel like it for example. Also there are many many cases that have happeend where a club is broke and need the money so they force a player out who may have actually wanted to stay. I saw a story of Troost Ekong saying he was basically forced out of this Turkish Club he was playing at because they wanted the money and he would have liked to stay but they pressured him into accepting terms with the buying club. Clubs literally do this to players all the time. I believe Sporting did the same yo Chermiti as well. Chermiti according to Portuguese papers wanted to stay at Sporting and Sporting wanted the Chermiti money to fund the purchase of Morten Hjulmand. So I believe Sporting said to Chermiti “You’te going to everton. We’re accepting this bid you’re going” that’s not honouring contracts in my opinion and clubs do this all the time to players when they need funds to buy other players, etc. So I think it is wrong to judge players for forcing moves when clubs force players out all of the time plus the abysmal way in which clubs have free reign to sack managers whenever they like. Clubs have very little loyalty either to their players
I just think at the end of the day clubs throw managers and players under the bus all the time and treat them like disposable objects then complain when managers and players do the same to them. Its having your cake and eating it

Gnonto needs to honor his contract, period. I’ve been harsh about the direction of the club. I’ve called for it to be stripped down to the core and built out again. In this case, Gnonto needs to nutt up and be a man of your word. I can see his side, Leeds is going down in flames this season, that’s a fact. He doesn’t want to have to live through this disaster. However, his brand is taking a massive hit. If I’m a forest or wolves or even an Everton, no way am I giving away any $$ to a player who won’t honor his word.

As a Leeds fan, I’m not too phased by Harrison leaving, it was bound to happen. The issue is that we’ve not gotten a fee for him, but in light of the last couple of weeks that’s not surprising either. As for Gnonto, I wouldn’t sell. I’d dock all the wages I can and dump him in the 21s away from the first team until he sorts his attitude out or, as you say, someone is willing to pay good money for him. It’ll teach him and all his u21 peers a valuable lesson. As someone else said, we Leeds fans tend to be hypersensitive to things good and bad, and at present the consensus is very doom and gloom. I myself am going to withhold my meltdown until the window officially closes, anything could happen between now and then. We have very little knowledge of what’s going on behind closed doors and we have no idea what team we’re gonna end up with come the end of the window. May as well keep calm until then.

    Leeds fan here.
It all stems from the rancid job Victor Orta has done, our previous Director of Football that was sacked in May. Added relegation loan clauses in basically every new signings contract since promotion, allowing them to leave without the club recouping a fee on any of the players. Never heard of such a clause before, mental.
His complete incompetence was highlighted by Jack Harrison’s contract extension in April. 2 points above the drop, looking destined for relegation, Orta negotiates a relegation loan clause in Harrison’s contact. So, so incompetent.
He left Middlesbrough in a similar mess, the job he had before he moved to Leeds.

If Gnonto and Summerville end the season with championship winner's medals, they'd be a far more interesting prospect for teams yet, the value of them then puts Leeds in a strong position because Leeds also will be Premier League again. The pair of them are low earners and Leeds are currently positioned where it would be impossible to replace them like for like in quality. All drama, the fans were told about the situation yet a bit of trust and patience would be wise, a few more additions through the loan market and other adjustments will see a top six finish at least, no worries.

I have no sympathy for anyone in the boardroom dealing with the fallout from all this. 49ers have been involved with the club since 2018 and had held just under a 50% stake since 2021. They will have had knowledge about these release clauses that have absolutely hamstrung us this summer, not least when they were doing the due diligence prior to the full buyout. As for Angus Kinnear, he was the MD overlooking the recruitment of the most mentally feeble group of players this club has seen in many years. He signed off on contracts allowing players to leave on loan should we go down and in Jack Harrison's case, at the beginning of April when we were circling the plughole. It's an absolute disasterclass in how to run a relegated club, the 49ers are off to a rocky start and Angus Kinnear should be sacked for gross incompetence. Don't even get me started on Radrizzani and Orta. I wouldn't be shocked if we ended up in another relegation battle this year unless we start signing some quality players at a rapid rate over the next couple of weeks.

  • @alex-jh2498
    @alex-jh2498 10 місяців тому +4

We were somewhat prepped for this by Farkes comments when he arrived. We also knew there were a lot of players with relegation clauses albeit the sheer number of them with Loan clauses has been a surprise. Harrison the most surprising of the lot given his contract was signed 4 months ago, when the writing was on the wall in terms of premier league status.
The Gnonto situation seems to have surprised the club hence them going on the defensive. It's clearly a messy situation and given his agents track record, I doubt it's as clear cut as the media currently have it.
What the club did know that us fans didn't is how many of these players were at risk and they've been slow off the mark in terms of getting to work on retention and transfer activity. I think the transfer activity is somewhat hindered by they stilll don't fully know what we will need when so many players are uncertain. Nat Philips is an example, we ar heavily linked with a £10+ million move for him, but if you suddenly lose all you best attackers, does a £10m CB become the priority anymore?
Quite simply the answer now is to get busy and quick. A couple full weeks left to get names through the door and give Farke a shot at producing something. I think they nailed the coaching appointment and hopefully he was well informed as to what he was walking into. Farke will get a middle of the pack finish with an average crop of players in this league. Give him 3 or 4 bits of quality and a nice slice of luck and he can mount a promotion charge.
If we continue to be slow, then it's about clearing the decks and preparing for a proper challenge next year unfortunately.

@@HLTCOMEDIA I think its a little easy to talk about the need to act quicker. When we do so we often forget they didn't know what was happening in terms of the previous owner trying to use the stadium as collateral, the need to appoint a new manager, their plans to redevelop the stadium and all this happening while the EFL seems to have taken as long as possible to sanction the take over, putting it back weeks and therefore limiting the amount of time they have to do all of the above AND bring in new players. With how slow negations with players and agents can be, the EFL really put them up against it

Really well balanced video this, first video I've seen of yours. Impressed the detail and your take.
I get the understanding that you probably are more sympathetic to our plight due to the contractual wranglings that Palace have been though 👍

As I just said to someone else, I feel like the "pull" of Leeds is still big enough to work if you can act quickly in the market from this point on. I do understand where you're coming from though.

I’ve been a Leeds fan 30 years. I’ve had reality kick idealism/optimism clean out of me for most a that time. The last few weeks would just completely sicken ya, cowardly owners, cowardly players and it’s always the fans that pay. 2 games in and I’m sick of this season already

We'll be lucky not to follow sunderland's example, lost almost all players with any ability on loan, EFL FFP are preventing us from spending any money and we couldn't fill our bench away at birmingham with 2 players on there being reserve keepers. Fucked doesn't begin to describe it

Great review, when Leeds sort themselves out and if they managed promotion, wouldn’t it be funny if Everton get relegated with Harrison or Gnonto going the other way. Unfortunately we would have to take them back after the loan. I would definitely sell the rats then though asp.

I have said to a couple of people today that I feel like Leeds “pull” is still strong enough to attract the quality of player needed for Farke to get you back, just needs to happen fast. Thanks so much for taking the time to comment, hopefully you enjoy the channel moving forward.

I don't watch footy channels normally, but it was a breath of fresh air hearing a thought out (and sane) take on this whole fiasco,
Good luck for the season on both fronts.

I think leeds these days get alot of fans from the revie days or now in the doldrums they root for the under dog.

I fear we are all going to have to get use to it but if Leeds don't recruit & recruit quick it might be another 16 years back in the Championship ! The new owners have to look forward & forward plan accordingly otherwise that will be the only outcome !!
