Joe Gomez is forgotten amongst pundits, played so many games there for Liverpool and never gets mentioned. Not only did he play LB he would at times invert into midfield and also overlap with the left winger which is exactly what England needs at this time. It's like no one payed attention to the wonderful season he had.

I don’t understand whilst we are struggling for a LB, why Mitchell was never considered given he’s a LB in form with palace and coincidently plays alongside Guehi at palace
Because Southgate doesn't rate Mitchell as being good enough to play for England, that's the only logical conclusion, because Southgate knew to only take Shaw was going to be a big risk when everyone knew Shaw was carrying an injury before the tournament even started.
I’ve been saying this since the squad was picked. He picks an unfit shaw who hasn’t played any football in ages and trippier who’s right footed on the left. Why Mitchell was never looked at to play left back I’ll never know. Proper left footed full back, strong quick and a solid defender who plays with guehi for palace it’s a no brainer.
Or Lewis hall, he's superb for Newcastle every time he plays, he's infinitely better than trips playing out of position. Just more proof that southgate is out of his depth.
Yep him or Chilwell are the most obvious but there are others too: Alfie Doughty, Rico Henry, & Dan Burn (though he's better as CB in my opinion)

I don't know what Joe Gomez has to do to be mentioned as a left back for this England team. He played 19 games there last season, and no pundits have even brought his name up.
Also fixes the balance of the team. But if he plays Gordon need to play at LW too, since Gomez usually inverted to the midfield when he played there for Liverpool.

As a Liverpool fan, with all the LB chat, i have often thought of Gomez. Definitely a more defensive minded player than trippier, he'll stick to the left. Joe Gomez was a great LB this season except for after he started trying to score from 40 yards every game
I wouldn't mind us playing 4 at the back with trent RB and Gomez LB that transitions into a back 3, with walker right sided CB. Rice and Bellingham holding. Foden just ahead, then Gordon Kane Saka

Joe Gomez played almost an entire season at LB, is right footed but still adept on his left foot - better than trippier at least - and he is deceptively fast. Play him and you’ll see a massive difference.

You need to have a naturally left footed player in that position, it seems incredible to me we had no backup to shaw in the squad when you have so many English players to choose from go down to the Championship if you need to.

He offers alot more than just hanging on the wing. He loves to chase and press. He will do it all game high up the pitch and will also run back to tackle.

I watched Georgia beat Portugal last night. They played with passion, commitment, vigour, verve, dedication, belief, teamwork, relentlessness, ambition, perseverence and pride. I've seen none of these traits in the English team, for these Euros. They play like Southgate is... just vanilla.

Because i remember Gerrard saying him & Lampard used to tell multiple managers that they should play Carrick in a deeper role to free up the pair of them to get forward. Gomez main strength is his pace, which would allow you to play higher up, which is the main issue at the moment. It could also allow you to have Rice do what he does best, drive forward because he doesn't have to sit back and cover the left channel.
Gomez is also capable of coming inside and playing DM while in possession of the ball, which again allows the team to push high up with a reduced fear of being left vulnerable on the counter. This would allow you to potentially take more risks offensively, which in turn would suit players like Bellingham, Saka, Kane, Foden and so on.
Why do you think Arsenal and City have a "CB" playing LB? Also, two of the best attacking and defensive teams in Europe.

...these veterans utilise excellent positional sense/awareness whilst walking n jogging around the field, instead of dissipating his energy-reserves trying to run every blade of grass in the field.
Loss of energy can make a top player look amateur, just like he's been in the last 2x matches for England. It's unlike him to disappear in matches...

Joe Gomez has played great for Liverpool over the last 12 months. He has played left back on countless occasions over the ten years he has been at the club and always been excellent. These pundits are just as clueless as Southgate.
Once again it's a player out of position playing at LB instead of a natural left footed left back. Unfortunately I don't see Joe Gomez being excellent especially going forward when he has to mark dembele the whole game. Probably would do decent but he would 100% be focused on defensive side and not really push on. England have elite players in every position or the option of one besides left back. The main 2 are always injured and SouthGate doesn't like anybody else

interesting question is about 32 teams.. surely, it's debatable to say the least, but the thing with 24 teams kind of doesn't pay for itself: i mean with only 8 teams to be out after the group stage the top teams sometimes really don't even bother to care about the results of each game coz 1st place doesn't guarantee an easier path on the knockout phase, and on the other hand the not-so-top teams also don't bother much coz even one victory can drag you into the knockout stage.
the best option for Euros in my opinion was 16 best teams with 4 groups and the knockout stage starting with quarterfinals

Alan's suggested changes for MF and FW are spot on. But I don't know what the answer is for the RB and LB. As much as I like Trippier, I would move Walker to the left and bring Alexander-Arnold back in as RB. England's only given up 1 long-distance goal, so the defense isn't getting hammered. The problem is trying to play without any left-side attack.
Play the Spain way finding gaps and dribbling through playing to Foden's Strengths. 4-3-3 Holding or False 9 as Kane sometimes drops a little as follows:
